The curator who manages the museum is very knowledgeable and leads visitors through the place with fascinating stories which make the visit well-worth the time. Admission is free in front of the museum and along the street. Facing the museum, you'd think the entrance is up the flight of stairs in the middle to the second floor, but it's actually through the right door on the ground floor below the green awning. My favorite parts of the visit was experiencing the interiors of the jail cells and the intricately decorated Mardi Gras costumes on display I might have left the place, but memories of the Slidell stories told by the curator have stayed with me. The curator is also the author of the book, the Legend of "Onion head".

Built in 1981 for the World's Fair, the castle is quite small by castle standards. Only two bedrooms and a one and a half baths on the inside. As you drive down the I-10, east of New Orleans, you may have a WTH moment. There's a castle off in…read morethe distance (well on Hwy 11). It is a private home, for now, with aspirations for more that never quite materialize. Still the history of the place; it's recent vintage and it's singularity in the swamps of South Louisiana make it something special. You have to love a man with a dream. In 1981, Simon Villemarette decided he wanted a castle. Was it supposed to be at tourist attraction? Or was it just going to be his home? Whichever he built it well. He passed and his family had to sell. Yes it survived Katrina when most buildings did not. The official assessor's description says "concrete castle" so maybe even the K winds were intimidated. Some folks from Virginia owned it from 1995 to 2014, maybe they planned to make an inn out of it (according to news stories at the time), but that never happened. Now the current owners post to the official FB page that they too want to make it an entertainment/photo shoot/bed & breakfast spot. BUT the FB has been saying be patient since 2016. Still it's a fun spot to see. It is private property so don't be a creeper. And I decided this bit of unique architecture should be my review #2400. Enjoy!

This 19th-century fort was built after the War of 1812 to defend Lake Pontchartrain and New Orleans. It was briefly used as a prison during the Seminole Wars of the 1820s and then was used by Confederate forces during the Civil War where it was used as a training base for Colored Troops. Not much use after then and it was abandoned in 1890 and then listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Unfortunately, the fort was heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and then again by Gustav and Isaac in 2008 and 2012. It was closed again in 2015 and is unlikely to open again soon. What I…read morecan do is tell you about my personal experiences here, and explain why you should come and visit for yourself. Why should you visit? If you are even remotely into historic sites, you will enjoy yourself. This brick fortress is very old, but relatively well preserved. The fort has sustained some damage from hurricanes, but the state has kept it in decent shape. The view from the top of the fort is beautiful, and you are likely to see shrimp boats going to or from port. I have very fond memories of this fort. My brothers and I were frequent visitors throughout our youth. The time spent running around the dark, damp corridors had a positive impact on who I am today. Sure the corridors are brick, and falling may hurt, but smashing your head can occasionally knock sense into you. My main complaint is that there are no actual cannons on the site anymore. There used to be giant cannons along the top of the fort, but they have been replaced by plastic replicas. No one likes climbing on plastic replicas. Note: There is a small fee to enter the fort, but it is well worth it.
