Kubo continues to be a Filipino-owned community venue that houses a retail space, displaying/selling a variety of Pinoy-inspired merch. My wife and I stopped in during a visit to the Bixby Knolls neighborhood of Long Beach, and was impressed by the collection of curated products, neatly displayed across the space. Folks were setting up tables for one of their many cultural events/gatherings, but their space is big enough to handle it while shoppers browse. Their retail space includes a collection of 'Filipino Komiks & Kids Lit' and prints from local/Filipino artists (two of which we've already displayed at our home). This time, ended up bringing home a 'Bangus Pro Shop' ballcap ($24.95) and Filipino Birthday Greeting Card ($5.50). The payment processing is modern, using Shopify, their website platform provider. A very adorable, empowering space for Filipino Americans (or any Asian Americans) overall! This was such a rare find and treat. We parked on the street in front of the store with ease. When we came in, they were setting up for an event later in the day. With that being said, I can tell there is a lot of engagement and activities for the community! My fiancé and I came to stop by, to purchase gifts for a friend. He felt very seen and felt with every little book, trinket, and toy. I also felt delight seeing myself, being represented. I loved seeing the handmade items, small business items being sold, and books. The most impressive part was the books and toys for infants/toddlers. We purchased some "first words in Tagalog" books and a toy. This place is definitely worth visiting! The girls here were very inviting and nice. This corner shop on Atlantic and Marshall Pl in Bixby Knolls was such a great addition to the block. You can find books by Filipino authors and traditional Filipino outerwear. They sell snacks and drinks too. I believe they still offer Filipino marshal arts lessons too -- it's the kind of close combat fighting usually done with a knife. It's the fighting they used in the movie Dune with Timothy Chalamet. They call it Kali. Prices are high, but you won't find these products anywhere else. Once upon a time, as this Faerie Queen was a strolling down the street in the LBC, I happened upon this cute corner store. There were books with recommendations and that drew me in! Amazing collective shop and event space located on the corner. Plenty of street parking with 2hr limit. The owners are wonderful. Plenty of Filipino and Asian items, candles, decor, dolls, hats, tees, other clothing, snacks, as well as a lot of books. A great collection of authors, artists, and shops featured here. My friend held a pop-up stationery event here and it was such a perfect space with plenty of room. The shop was open as well and I purchased a couple hats. I don't recommend Kubo. I have been wanting to go to Kubo and finally got a chance today. Since it is the Memorial Day weekend, I messaged Kubo on Instagram to make sure they are open today. They told me that they are open from 11am - 6pm. I came at 12:53pm and Isabelle (the salesperson) told me to come back at 1:15pm. I told her that I drove far to get here and I won't be able to come back at that time. She said she is on her break and can't open the store during her break. I recommend to Kubo to plan the time accordingly. If an employee is going to be on break, then they need to have someone fill in during that time. It was such a waste of my time (total 40 min driving). I will not return to Kubo. read more

I wandered into KUBO LB during a Bixby Knolls event and was immediately charmed by the huge wall of books. Bel Canto is a great bookstore, with thoughtfully curated titles. Lots of great choices for both adults and kids which you wouldn't see highlighted at a big box store. KUBO is home to a number of small Filipinx owned businesses, providing a variety of products and services. The day I visited they were gearing up for a sound bath event that evening. A sign in the back promoted an upcoming microMuseum on the Filipinx diaspora. I am looking forward to going back to see that. They also offer co-working spaces on daily or longer term basis. The work spaces looked really nice. It's a nice large, bright space, which can be rented for private events. Because all of their furniture is on wheels, it can be moved around to clear and arrange the space however you need it! KUBO seems like a great addition to the neighborhood. read more

Many of our favorite vendors told us they were hosting an event. We heard about this spot and their soft opening so we decided to check it out. AMBIANCE: Parking: Street parking and limited plaza parking Feels: Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach is pretty, nice and orderly. The spot itself is close to a neighborly area and not too far away from Downtown Bixby Knolls. The space itself was formerly run by a church. You have your small passage rooms, a nice venue for larger groups and a big backyard for plants or performances. The vendors made the place come alive and felt pretty comforting. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Meeting some of the vendors was great! Romeo's Chocolate, Flipp Family, Kubo CA, and Pamana Kali were passionate and kind. TL; DR OVERALL: 5 Stars! Love, love, love! I was there for first Friday and picked up some yummy sweets, a gorgeous cebu blue pothos, and a delightful fiction book to read while I lounge under its luscious foliage!
