So many beautiful beaches and parks in Hawaii! Kuhio beach is a nice place to walk around and enjoy the view of the ocean and city which is less than a mile away. There are a couple of benches along the walkway so you can relax, eat, catch up, and take in the scenery. Also the park has a couple of huge Indian Banyan trees which we marveled at for a good couple of minutes. We came here early around 9am so there wasn't that many people around yet. Seems like a perfect spot to have a picnic, tan, and just hang out. The waves are a little more calm here. Although, I don't think it's an ideal location to go swimming or snorkeling since there are a bunch of rocks and coral, but if you want to try...be careful! read more

This gorgeous beach park sprawls parallel to the busiest sections of Waikiki. It was only about eight blocks from our hotel, and it seems like all of the various hotels and resorts basically pour onto it, which can lead to heavy crowds on the weekends. The water is crisp and blue, the sand is soft and white, and there are generally some solid crowds around. There was some kind of event going on at the beach on the weekend that we really walked through it. Looked like it might have been a surf competition. Lots of tents and vendors set up, but there was still large sections available for the general public just about a quarter mile down the way. read more

This is a nice beach! Although it's certainly a crowded one, partly because the tide comes in so far, partly because the stone wall built to mitigate the waves are so close to shore, and partly because it's a fun place in a nice section of Waikiki! You can see the statue of the Duke here, and lei one on him. You can also take surf lessons, and also rent surf and snorkel gear. The bathrooms are pretty grody, but you're not coming here for the bathrooms, I'm assuming! Four nights a week, this beach is also host to a free hula show and torch lighting ceremony, which is also fantastic. What (else) makes this beach different from all other beaches? The waves here break much bigger than we experienced anywhere else; this is where you come to jump into and over and through the waves of the Pacific! read more

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BEACH!! I know so many people love Kaimana down the way, but I think Kuhio is WORLDS beyond. Waikiki beaches ARE really beautiful, but way too crowded for my tastes. This beach, given that it's on the end near the Zoo, already eliminates some of the crowd. It's a good mix of tourist and locals and people just lounging, or catching some waves/jumping off the pier. Because there's a break, the water is really calm and it is crystal clear. It's perfect for general lounging, and I think it's much clearer and in some ways, not as crowded as Kaimana. There's lots of beach room for lounging and it's super fun to watch the teenagers jumping off the wall and others on their boogie boards, or others, farther out, catching some surf. Sigh. I do really love Ala Moana too, but this beach, for Waikiki, might take the cake for me. read more

This was the beach directly in front of my resort during my trip. I didn't get to spend as much time here as I would have liked, but when I did I had a great time. The lagoon was great and relaxing. I loved just floating around. It was actually quite cool because the little tiny fishies must have loved my pink raft because they stayed pretty close to it at all times. The bleh part is that the sand seems really dirty and littered. That's pretty much expected since it's a very busy beach, but it's still sad. If everyone picked up their trash this wouldn't be a problem. It was still nice to take a little nap in the sun, a quick swim, gather our stuff and head to our room. It was also a beautiful view from our room. I loved looking out at this beach. read more

This review is specifically about the free music and hula shows put on in this park by the government's ministry of culture. The shows are held every second day of the week starting at 6:30 pm. It was amazing! The grass was nice and soft and it was comfortable to spread our blanket out on the grass to watch the performance unfolding in front of us. The music was relaxing and the dancers were wonderful (so sweet to see little children dancing as well). A wonderful way to end our visit in Hawaii. read more

The beach was right across the street from the Waikīkī Beach Marriott where we were staying. It had the most beautiful sunset and after I took a picture and then turned around there were a lot of other tourists who were doing the same. My wife and son had a great time tubing the ocean. read more

Let's start off with a 10/10 amazing view. Although my family and I arrived at the beach around the afternoon with a slight overcast the ocean did not disappoint! The water was crystal clear and it was warm not cold at all. The beach is very crowded which is expected but not to the point where it's impossible to find a spot. Along the strip there are plenty of shopping centers restaurants and entertainment. We also walked through all the shopping centers at Waikiki. The only thing we had a hard time was finding parking which we had to park in a structure and pay $10. Other than that I would recommend going to this beach and going to Honolulu Hawaii! read more

This beach is just east of the main Waikiki beaches and less crowded with a beautiful view of Waikiki. I enjoy going for a walk on the sidewalk from Waikiki past the aquarium and zoo. There's a nice little cafe (The Barefoot Beach Cafe) where you can get breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks. You can hang on the grass in the park which is quite large or the small strip of sandy beach. Water is clear with great views of Waikiki to the est. This is a great beach, very peaceful, and just a stone's throw from the major crowds. read more

Pros: if you are staying in Waikiki it's close and accessible. The sunsets are amazing. It's family friendly; there are breakers about 50 yards out to keep the waves down, so the little ones will have a much easier time swimming. Cons: it can get crowded. There is also a significant homeless population in Waikiki, so there will be many people nearby pushing shopping carts, talking to themselves, etcetera. Although these people are harmless and aren't panhandling or harassing people, they will be washing themselves in the public showers and sinks. Overall it's a good beach. But if you have the ability to visit other beaches on the island, do it. read more

Aka. Queen's Beach- ouch, really kinda dangerous to swim around large sharp boulders. We went here once to swim, scratched up our legs, and haven't been back to swim- not really safe where we went. A tip if you're still going: wear your aqua shoes. On the plus side, the man-made wall feature is nice- safer for kids to play in the water. But this doesn't mean you can let your guard down, though. Another plus, nice picture-taking opportunity because Diamondhead is closer than the other stretches of beach. We recently (Feb 2010) had to take some re-do's because the first shot (from the 1st trip) was taken when we were heavier. Home of "Sunset on the Beach"- movies are played on the large screen- that's pretty neat, but we've never been. It's a free thing to do in Waikiki. read more

DIVE OAHU gets a ZERO. This company is terrible, I would rate them lower if I could. I asked them for a surf lesson and they told me, "I don't need one" they said, "just rent a board, you'll be fine." I was so upset, I told them I have no experience, I need a lesson and they still insisted, saying, "it's easy, you can figure it out, just rent a board it'll be fine" What the heck is going on? Why can't I get a surf lesson? Before I walked away the desk person admitted that they didn't have any surf instructors available. They told me I had to come back tomorrow. I ended up walking down the beach and ended up getting a lesson from Aloha Beach Services. Thank God for them! Also, Dive Oahu has the worst staff. The staff members are always on their phones or ipads, not paying attention to what's going on around them. WARNING: FOR YOUR SAFETY, DON'T RIDE IN THEIR CANOE! Dive Oahu had an accident today. Their canoe flipped over with people in it. This happened today, the video is on IG. Someone needs to close these people down. They can't give surf lessons and they can't give safe canoe rides? This is one of my favorite beaches in the world. Several years I took pride in being able to recognize the fish ponds that people were swimming in. I was sure this was the place that the ancient chiefs raised their dinners. Now, due to the massive amount of information on the Internet, I have discovered the beach is artificial. Trucked in from the North Shore. And the "fish ponds" are actually seawalls made in a County improvement project in 1951. I shed a tear for my fantasy. But the beach here is truly fantastic, and if you want to get into warm, shallow, sandy water, even in December, this is it. Grassy parkland, coconut palms, and a cement walkway front the beach. This is where they put up the movie screen for the free evening movies, too. read more

I've heard the area of the sea walls referred to as the Ponds so that's what I'm going with here.... Loved the long walk from my hotel to this beach early in the mornings. By the time I made it there my first cup of coffee and breakfast snack was settled in and I was ready for a swim. I found it beautiful to have the sun shining through the towers, Diamondhead in the background, a little rain falling from out of nowhere as I paddled and stroked around in the mid-tide waters. Some pluses are: the sandy bottoms as opposed to many coral areas further west up Waikiki; not the least bit crowded in the mornings - only hardcore swimmers and shore break runners; numerous coffee places close by; cold showers and a small man-made pond in which you wash your feets. A couple minuses: homeless campers are practically epidemic here along this stretch of beach in the a.m.s, only yards away from a Honolulu Police Department building on Kalakaua; if you're staying near Ala Moana or Lewers Street, this might be a bit of a long walk unless you don't mind, in which case not really a minus at all. I lose weight when I go on vacation on Oahu! And Kuhio Beach Park/the Ponds is one very good reason why. read more

I came here for a picnic and reserving a spot for the Thursday evening hula show. It is so nice to be in a city with a white sandy beach so conveniently close! Our group got a great spot in the grassy area in front of the stage and great old tree about an hour before the show. We got to run out to dip our feet in the water, too. The sand is white and soft. It's not very deep. There was a mix of tourists and locals. The free evening hula show was great! It was educational with cultural lessons. They demonstrated the traditional hula and compared it to the modern hula. We enjoyed music from a guitar, ukulele, and bass. I learned how men and women both hula. They used some traditional percussion objects in their dancing, too. The female dancer was a former hula champion who is getting back into the dance scene. So great for people watching. Free way to support local culture! read more

This is pretty much where I really live on my days off... and after work... and before work... and when I sneak out of work... and... oh... you get the point. It's not that it's the most pristine beach in the world, or that it's secluded... it's that it has a better mix of locals vs. tourist ratio, and water that's deep enough for swimming. Add that there's always a spot to BBQ and you have a winner. If you see me down here... say hi... and for gods sake... give me some of your BBQ! This beach is more for tourist. Lots of tourist come here. It's a beautiful beach. Love the scenery, you have the beach on one side and the city on the other. You have really good entertainment from foods to movie nights and such. The beach isn't so bad with rocks, and corals, but you still should be careful where you walk or swim. I still got cut from the corals really deep so I had to stay out of the water. The waves weren't so high the time we went. But when they were, it was a good day to go boogie boarding or surfing. You can walk from the beach to the strip in less than maybe 5-10 minutes. Not bad. Great place to go. read more

This could be a great alternative if you don't want to swim in the more congested parts of Waikiki Beach. I remember swimming here and noticing how salty the water was and how strong the waves were. I also remember that it was pretty crowded the time I went. You don't get views of Diamondhead here like you do if you swim closer to where the hotels and resorts are along Waikiki. I prefer to swim with Diamondhead in view, so I'd rather go out a bit farther west along the shore, even if it's a bit more tourist-y. read more

Kuhio beach is crowded by 10am every day, but hey it is right across from all the hotels that the tourists stay at...myself included! We stayed at Aston Circle and it was so nice and convenient to just walk across the street every am, and anytime we had bits of free time during the trip. They also have free hula shows at 7 pm except on Tuesdays. read more

Great little beach for little kids. it's only about 3 feet deep. There's also a sea wall to keep the water tame.

I LOVE this beach for visiting while staying in a Waikiki hotel with my toddlers. It's in walking distance. The water is warm and clean. Because of the breakwalls, there are not big waves, so it's safe. The sand is fine. If you walk up to the breakwall at low tide you can see all sorts of fun marine life like minnows and crabs. Sardines and needlefish often swim up to the shoreline. I always have a fabulous time hanging out here. If you hate crowds, it's probably not for you. The park is well attended. read more

Kuhio Beach Park is beautiful! There is a lot of free entertainment, historic statues, and local flavor hidden around here. The beach itself is clean, sandy, not too rocky in the water and there is a barrier in most areas to break the waves which I loved because I don't swim so good and got really frustrated being beat up by waves at some of the other beaches! It's also a pretty cool place to just hand out and drink at night with a group of people, we were there until 4am with no problems, although there are grungy looking people wandering with metal detectors in search of...uh...treasure I guess? If I find myself in Hawaii again I will be sure to situate myself within walking distance of Kuhio beach again! read more

This is where I come, can get a little crowded at night mostly during the sunset time. A lot of locals come here, especially to jump off the cement walls, just be respectful. There is a life guard station not too far away, great views of diamond head and of the hotels. read more

I know this area as Queen's Beach. It is a great place to relax and layout. The water near shore is fairly shallow, and further out you see a lot of body boarders. It is a nicer, quieter and not as touristy alternative to Waikiki, located the Diamond Head end. It seems to be a hang out for the gay community, there are lots of attractive men lounging on the sand. As a woman, I appreciate the view. :D The #2 bus runs by and if you are lucky you can get parking at Kapiolani Park. Beware: The #2 is packed in the afternoon and stops every 3 mins, so allow yourself the time to get where you need to go. read more

Your typical Waikiki Beach. This is where you'll find the Duke Kahanamoku statue (that apparently is facing the wrong direction, since a Hawaiian would never turn their back to the ocean). Typical Waikiki-side beach. You have a beautiful view of the hotels lined up against the white sand beaches and the water is extremely clear, but it's jam-packed with both tourists and locals alike. If you want a real Hawaiian beach experience then I would definitely recommend getting out of Honolulu and checking out the beaches on the windward, leeward, or north shore coasts. In my opinion it's much more beautiful and natural on the rest of the island. :) read more
