First time trying dim sum in Canada! This place is pretty good. No wait time to be seated. Service was alright. The staff were not super attentive, we had to flag them down a few times. We ordered the usual dim sum dishes. The har gow (shrimp dumpling) and balo bao (pineapple bun) were my favorites here. Their pineapple custard bun has pineapple pieces inside which makes it taste even better. There's a parking lot next door but you gotta pay for it unless you park further down the street. It was very packed inside, mostly cuz it's the weekend and everyone wanted dim sum despite the cold, snowy weather. You have to pay for your check in the front, not at the table. read more

I really love the system this restaurant has! You sit down where the hostess tells you. Water and hot Green Tea is brought to you. Then carts pushed by other restaurant staff members are wheeled next to you and all around the restaurant to all the tables and customers. On the carts are containers filled with food like Dim Sums and soups and cakes and mango jelly and sticky rice leaf wraps etc. They also have a cart that cooks some sort of meat items too. I tried a couple of different things, mostly seafood items and I loved it all! My least favorite was the mango jelly circle. It was good in an average way but not great. I wish it had tasted more fruity I think. The red bean buns were yummy! This restaurant is pretty big. It is very popular and it's fantastic! I do wish they served items with cheese and noodles though....Other than this I think it's pretty close to excellent! read more

Our family treated us here while we were in town visiting. We heard this spot is notorious for hosting many family events and celebrations. So it was only fitting that they brought us here when we came into town (which is rare!). I can't speak for the dim sum since we didn't try any, but from the looks of other people's orders it looked yummy. Came here on a Friday evening around 630pm and the restaurant wasn't too full, all the customers took up less than half the space. We tried the pre-fixed menu, I believe it was 8 course. It seemed like foods were never ending! Our only critique is that there was no lazy susan so we had to keep passing the plates around to share. It started off with a plate of duck, chicken, and I think pork. I only tried the duck which tasted like any other Chinese duck. The soup came out which was good, think it's egg drop but not quite hot and sour soup. From then on, the foods were all blurry to me. The dishes that stood out to me was the fried pork (loved the veggies/peppers), stir fry crab plate, Chinese broccoli with beef, chow mein, and forgot what else. Wish I took pics because there were so many foods! Amongst 8 adults and 1 kid, we had plenty of foods for leftovers which took at least 4 to-go containers to fill. I find the dim sum in Canada is much better than in the US. The parking in downtown Winnipeg is limited in some areas however I'm sure if we were locals, we would know all the nooks and crannies. This is our usual go-to place when we are visiting. This restaurant has been renovated since the last we were there and is much more nicer than the old one. There's a new entrance leading from the front door into the main dining area. There are large and smaller tables, some of the tables should have a lazy Susan to make it easier to share the dishes. A large room is available for a more private party. They have free wifi but you need to ask staff for the password. The portion size is a bit bigger than I've seen, the su mai (pork dumplings) were big and covered the bamboo holder. These were my favourite. Everything tasted delicious, the rice rolls had lots of filling of shrimp, beef and BBQ pork, as every kind of dumpling. The ladies pushing the carts were friendly and we still recognize some of them! Lots of choices were continually coming around so we had to stop ordering so we could catch up with the dishes on the table!! If you've been following my previous reviews, you know dim sum has a special place in my heart. You can never go wrong with dim sum! A very friendly welcoming restaurant, with a wide range of tables, and servers who speak fluent English! This is where you go when you want dim sum in Winnipeg. It is a traditional style restaurant where the staff circulates around the tables in carts with different food items. You are able to pick and choose your dishes and have the servers write it down on your order sheet! With this sheet, the cashier is able to identify what you ate and the cost of each item brought to your table to calculate your total bill. Depending on the dish, the prices are: Small - $3.50 Medium - $4.00 Large - $4.50 Extra Large - $5.25 Special - $6.75 / Although coming from Toronto their price points are a lot higher, but I guess that varies on the demand and accessibility to resources? Not too sure how that works. Either way, their dim sum tasted a lot like what I would get back home in Toronto and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. This is probably one of the first Chinese restaurants I remember going to and still patron for dinner and dim sum occasionally. Weekend dim sum is busy as this is the the place to take newbies to see the dim sum carts being pushed around. The volume and turnover allows for the cart system to work here. As others have mentioned, it is best to arrive earlier, around 11:30-12:30 but dim sum does run till 3 pm here but you will get the freshest and most variety at the earlier time. The servers will tick off one of the small/med/large sections on your bill. This is how you are billed later - I hate how the pricing is very vague here as I have no idea how much each dish actually costs. From experience, it will be about $10-15 but it's best to go with a larger group so you can try more dishes. My faves: ha gow (shrimp dumplings), shrimp and scallops dumplings, char siu bao (steamed white bun stuffed with BBQ pork), beef spareribs, turnip cake (lau baak gou), tripe (white), lo mai gai (stick rice wrapped in lotus leaves) and Chinese doughnut wrapped with rice noodles. And for sweets, mango pudding, sweet tofu pudding (Dou fu fa), egg tarts, and Malaysian steamed sponge cake. Service is very hit and miss here and you kind of have to fend for yourself. That being said, when the service is good, the people are pretty nice. Make sure you request for tea right away - yes, you should have tea because that is what dim sum is all about. Plus, the tea helps to cut the grease of many of the food items. Sometimes the push cart ladies aren't the most knowledgeable or at least they don't communicate clearly about the dishes. You usually have to flag someone down for hot water refills for your tea. And at the end, if you have leftovers, flag someone down for boxes. It's so busy that more often than not, you will have to be proactive in asking for what you want. Dinner offers better service as it's more calm than dim sum hours. I like the seafood dishes like the garlic and scallion lobster dish served on a bed of noodles, salt and pepper crab, as well as the seafood and gailan stirfry dish. Also like the satay beef dish and the crispy half chicken. Portions are quite large and will run you on average somewhere from $12-$15 a dish. It is probably the largest Chinese restaurant in the city and holds many wedding/banquet dinners. Decor is updated and clean. The Impark parking on the Kum Koon lot is $5, but just pay and tear off half (the receipt portion) to take into the restaurant while leaving the other half in your car. Any time I feel like having a *really* good Dim-Sum I go to Kum-Koon Garden, the rest of the food is quite good as well, but you can do better and pay less somewhere else. Kum-Koon's dim-sun is one of the most expensive ones in town, but I find it is worth the price. Kum-Koon has one of the biggest selections for their dim-sum, I also find it to taste the best compared to other four dim-sum places I've tried in Winnipeg. My favorite dishes and recommendations are: * har gau (shrimp dumplings) * siu mai (steamed pork dumplings) * shark fin dumplings * bean-curd rolls (with meat inside) * guotie (potstickers, a.k.a. Chinese pan-fried dumplings) w/ red vinegar * Vietnamese spring rolls * char-siu sou (flaky pastry with Chinese BBQ pork) * char-siu bau (both steamed and backed buns with Chinese BBQ pork) * lo mai gai (steamed sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf) * congee (rice porridge) is actually quite good For dessert I'd suggest sweet coconut and/or pineapple buns. Mango pudding is really good, but I find it's too expensive. Kum-Koon's dishes are divided into three categories: small, medium and large, priced accordingly. When you order a dish from the cart, the waiter will cross out a corresponding square on your blue bill-chart. Ones you know which dishes you like and what category they belong to, eating there could become more affordable. Have no illusions though, it is one of the most expensive dim-sum in Winnipeg, but you get what you pay for. Another nice thing about this place is its decor. It feels very classy compared to any other typical Chinese restaurant. You can actually bring you business partners/clients here without a worry. They also rent the place for special events like birthday parties, weddings, etc. Don't forget to validate your parking ticket on the way out, if you parked in the lot. I think Kum Koon Garden is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Winnipeg. If not, in Chinatown at least. Dined here with a friend on a Monday night, and it wasn't very busy. Mind you it was around 9pm, and the restaurant looked like it was about to close. We decided to quickly dine here so they can close after we leave. We had the minced chicken with cream corn soup, squid chow mein, and the pan fried beef rice noodle. They all tasted really good for Winnipeg standards! The chow mein probably could've been a little less crispier, but I was still impressed with the relatively good quality of food here, at least from the items I ordered. Price is a little bit on the high end, but the portions do make it up. Overall I was satisfied with this place, although I would only return for large gatherings...not a place I would go alone unfortunately due to the offerings available. read more

Have to give it the extra .5 stars since it's where my mom and dad got married and my sister and I had our first full moon celebration. We went for dimsum around 130, they close at 3pm for break. It was still really busy and the carts were going round and round, most places in Mississauga don't do this cart thing anymore so that was nice. The food was pretty good, we got the radish cake, sticky rice, peanut and shrimp dumplings, chicken feet cause we were pretty full from the Forks. I only had the radish cake and it could have been crispier. My mom and sister said everything else was really good, nice they have the hot sauces right on the table. This is where I learned to be a dim sum snob. No other place I've ever tried (that's 2 countries btw) matches to this level of dim sum. It's been over a year since I've been here and they have stepped it up a notch, by adding new items such as honey garlic chicken kabobs and Peking spare ribs. I like when dim sum places try new items so it's not the same old (yet still a goody) food. Needless to say, the typical dishes here: shu mai, hai gow, chong fun, chicken feet, BBQ pork buns, pineapple buns and sticky rice are absolutely delicious. This place is always packed. They host weddings and birthday parties frequently. You usually see parts of the restaurant walled off for these occasions. It doesn't stop people from coming in and filling the rest of the restaurant for their awesome food. Staff are pretty prompt and service is good. Took our kids (10 & 12 yrs) there last week for lunch...first time they tried dim sum & they loved it! The staff loved them and were so friendly because they kept ordering more chicken feet..the staff thought it was great! We had a really fun time. We love the food..I love love love their sticky rice, and the pineapple buns are so delish! The pork deep fried crispy rolls are to die for and we love the shrimp dumplings. The shark fin dumplings were good too. Mango pudding with cream is our favorite way to finish things off. Great food and always great service! read more

Warning- this is not a dim sum review. Came here for a delicious dinner for eleven people (they seat large groups here very well). We called in a day ahead for peking duck, and OH MY GOSH it's the best peking duck I've had outside of Beijing. The skin was sooo crisp and good and the pancakes were delicious and the flavor was incredible. Probably the second best peking duck I have ever had, the first best being at the original Bianyifang (basically, pretty damn impressive). However, the only other dish that stood out to me was the walnut shrimp, which was made with very large, succulent shrimp. The duck lettuce wraps were averagely delicious and steamed fish was the same as any other place. Everything else was good- just not stand-outish. If I ever come back here I'm just ordering a few ducks (remember to call ahead) and a plate of walnut shrimp. read more

It's certainly the restaurant that comes immediately to mind whenever friends or coworkers indicate they're craving this mysterious steamed meat paste wrapped in dough of varying color density and texture. Hope I didn't ruin it for you, but that's what you're in store for so it's best you're prepared or you're going to be disappointed (and hungry). Once inside the surprisingly tastefully decorated interior, a veritable freight train of carts crowned with bamboo steamer baskets rolls relentlessly by. Pork, seafood, vegetarian dim-sum, pork buns, and these curious little chinese hot dogs are a few of the surprises and delights that await. Then there's egg rolls, candied beef strips, and wonderfully aromatic sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf with a shiitake mushroom tucked snug inside. Allergy alert - I've discovered shrimp hiding at the bottom of a supposedly all pork roll before and the same roll on occasion comes topped with what I was told was shrimp roe. TIP 1: Make sure you get your hands on a crispy pork egg roll with the sweet chili sauce. TIP 2: The rib tips don't have enough meat or flavor to make it worth your while so pass if offered those. TIP 3: Dim sum, especially the more pillowy kind, continues to expand in your stomach. Restrain yourself (if at all poasible). If you've eaten to the point of being full, you're in for some cramps later (but worth every pang). read more

I am only versed in Las Vegas dim sum restaurants, but this place in Winnipeg is right on par with them. The only downside is parking, which if you cannot find on the adjacent downtown streets, you'll have to shell out for. They have a large capacity (I think there was a baby shower and bday party going on at the same time during peak dim sum time!). The restaurant is usually packed during lunchtimes throughout the week, but is comparatively quiet during dinner time with the exception being the multiple banquets that Kum Koon hosts. I went with my family for a Sunday dinner. Interesting ambiance, mediocre food... and terrible service. Where to start? -Waiter was unable to understand our simple food order in English. He was rude, impatient, and interrupted the ordering process twice to inexplicably run in the kitchen. Then he forgot to come back for the last two persons. -No pricing on dim sum menu. -The lemon chicken dish was bits of neon yellow sponges that tasted like a lemon-jelly donut. -Hot and sour soup was brought at the end of the meal. It was neither spicy nor sour, just insipid and viscous. -Two of the ordered dishes never made it to the table. -Father in law was served first... In town for a few days from Fargo; we spent the morning at the Manitoba Museum, then came here for lunch. I'm a big foodie and I've had some experience with dim sum, my friend has not. The women with the dim sum carts spoke very poor/limited English, so my friend--who doesn't eat chicken or seafood--was extremely freaked out. I asked if they had a dim sum menu (I've been to other places that did) but was told no. I chose one small plate and one medium plate from the carts--the BBQ pork in puff pastry was good, the steamed pork dumplings were bland and sort of grisly. My companion ordered the beef curry from the regular menu; it was very tasty, but had enormous chunks of vegetables (green peppers and onions)--does anyone eat 1/4 of an onion at once? Also, he was neither brought nor offered any rice, which is a pity as it would've been good in the curry liquid ( which was there in abundance). In all it was a 3-1/2 star experience.... I think the food is overall very authentic and varied, it's just that the place was not user-friendly for first-time customers. read more

It's our first time visit in Winnipeg and was recommended by friends to have dim sum here. Food was good but the price was very expensive. For a family of four we pay $92 for a simple lunch dimsum. It's more than you pay for a lunch buffet for 4 person. Compared to Toronto this amount way too much if you eat in Spadina. Not going back to this place. read more
