Mixed results recently here. First, the service was great. The new staff is enthusiastic and attentive. I saw that they have a new menu and was encouraged to try something new, other than my regular sushi or sashimi. I ordered the Pepper Tuna 6 pcs torched outside, sliced & served w. ponzu sauce. I ate this but I wish I had sent it back. I was expecting seared tuna, with spicy coating. Whatever the kitchen seared the tuna with (propane torch?) gave the tuna a VERY petro-chemical taste. This would have been delicious if they had pan seared this, or on a flattop grill. The rest of the dinner was excellent. read more

It's good if you're craving for Asian food (I say Asian because they have Japanese and Thai foods). They have an extensive menu and the portions are big (pretty much all items come with miso soup and a small salad). Bonus points for service. Christmas Eve, crazy time to visit a restaurant that doesn't accept reservations. The line was long but actually moved quickly. We were offered a seat at the sushi bar, three times, the first two we declined feeling it would limit our options to converse. The third time we said yes and I am glad that we did. It was a new and unique way to experience this Asian fusion concept, one that the bar was designed to deliver. Having our plates offered to us over the counter by the chef who prepared them offered a connection to the food and the meal that should not be overlooked. The whole service team was very involved and committed to presenting their restaurant in a manner that only speaks pride and passion. I won't create a novel to sum this experience up but the short end to a long story was that the food was presented with a visual appeal and the food did not disappoint. I am only sorry that we didn't try this restaurant long ago but I suppose you have to flip a lot of stones in order to uncover the gem and this place is a gem. Thank you read more

Overall, this restaurant was good. The service was quick and responsive, and the food was quite tasty. The appetizers were excellently prepared, the soup and salad average and the chicken from the hibachi menu was juicy and tender. A big issue I have with sushi restaurants are those that still serve "white tuna". That was the case here. A third of the sashimi within our Bento boxes had this mislabeled fish. If you are not familiar with white tuna, please do search it online and see why it is banned in places like JAPAN: "Japan have banned the sale of escolar [white tuna] due to its potential side effects. It has been banned for consumption in Japan since 1977, as the Japanese government considers it toxic." (from the Escolar Wikipedia page) Reference: Burros, Marian (March 10, 1999). Went here for a first date last night, super packed with college kids but as usual, great service, great food, great drinks. Got a mai tai and pad Thai with chicken with a volcano roll. Excellent. Ordinarily I might have gone with a 4-star rating, but I didn't want to be the guy to mess up their perfect rating. The food at Kume is awesome. Other reviewers aren't kidding about the artistry that goes into the sushi. I would easily put Kume on the same level with Shio in Portsmouth. My kids love the tempura dishes. Again, the presentation is really artistic, with tempura vegetables completing the plate. The Tom Yum soup is amazing. Powerful flavor that will clear your sinuses and put a huge smile on your face. Maybe I'm talking myself into that 5-star rating. Do yourself a favor and give it a try! read more

Amazing all around--friendly staff, quick service, clean, cool vibe, awesome drinks and of course, incredibly delicious food! 4 of us came in for a birthday which happened to fall on a "Mai Tai Monday." Highly recommend these $5 drinks but I digress. We ordered a stupid amount of food for 4 people--like 6 different rolls, a crab fried rice and a 2 item hibachi--but only took home the total of maybe 1 roll between everything. So good!!! We got a CA, a spicy tuna, a rainbow, a Celtics, a volcano, a dynamite and some other roll with COCONUT flakes on it. All of it, outstanding. And the hibachi salmon was just ridiculously good. Perfectly cooked but with a crispy underneath and whatever that sauce is, it should be bottled. Dinner was topped off when the whole restaurant lit up with different colored lights and sounds. I didn't know what was going on but it is their background as they brought me a free dessert for my birthday which the whole table devoured cause, yum! Can't recommend this place enough! read more

I'm all for sushi. This is located literally in a small New Hampshire town and I am usually hesitant because it normally mean not so fresh fish... But I was wrong. The sashimi was clean no scent. Love the uni. My only compliant would be the creme brulee since the sugar on top wasn't hard... And it was simply mush sugar. The sake martini was alcohol rub taste instead of sake.... Could be the cucumber of the alcohol that can do that. It's hard to get that right... Overall not a bad place. Small and quaint. read more

I'd give 0 stars if I could. We called and placed a take out order and were told it would be 15 minutes. Go down to pick it up and they ask for the name, go out back and come out and say it'll be just a minute. This happened 3 more times. 45 MINUTES LATER, after asking again, they come out and say they have NO ORDER, did we tell them the right name?!?! Why the h*|| didn't they ask that the first time. This is a new one and is situated in the new strip mall off the main drag in Newmarket. I've passed it many times and decided that we would give it try as soon as it opened. Bistro is defined as the following: in its original Parisian incarnation, a small restaurant, serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting. On entering it is very typical of the Japanese Restaurant and fits well within the definition of a bistro. It's glaringly clean and on display in the lobby is a magnificent aquarium. I was thinking that it's in the wrong place because it's difficult for everyone to enjoy depending on where you're sitting. There are also several TV's including behind the bar and in the main dining room. I refrain from using the word unfriendly in terms of the service but there was no interaction, no smile, or other indication the person was human. His demeanor was very matter of fact. Take the order, get your food to you, and that's about it. I don't' think he even returned to the table to check on us. I had the veggie tempura and it was light and crispy, just the way it's supposed to be. Broccoli, onion ring, sweet potato, and something I couldn't identify. No matter because all of it was good. Quite perfect actually. Brown rice is available on request. If all your looking for is good food without a total experience, this is cool, because it's just that. Personally, I like a little interaction with the server and one who is a little more attentive. Other than that it was great. Just not a 4 or 5 star for me. read more

Ordered chicken pad Thai. Apparently they use tofu as a filler, we called to ask for just chicken and were told that's how they serve it.

They have nice seating outside so you don't have drag your sushi home in the heat. I called in my order and to ask about the seating. I got chirashi which is usually fish on top of rice in a bowl but I love how they do it with the rice separate with nice presentation of the fish. Excellent, excellent fish and everything including the miso soup, salad, and tamago. The fish slices are the thickest I've ever seen with fantastic taste and texture. The pickles were the best I've had outside of Japan. The rice was well seasoned. A bargain at $20. read more

A week ago my wife went to Kume Bistro. It was her second time in there, and nothing prepared her for what has happened. She had ordered Snow Mountain roll, and it went well till the last piece of shrimp. That one felt not quite right, but only after she had eaten it. In 10 minutes she felt bad reaction in her stomach, and she barely made home before terrible vomiting, pain and shivering ensued. That lasted for 24 hours, and she felt awful for 2 more days even after the violent part was over. I've called Kume next day and talked to the manager. She only said they never had any customer to be poisoned by their food before, expressed mild concern, and promised to inspect the kitchen for potential problems. You can make your own dining decisions, but needless to say we will never ever go to Kume Bistro again, and will tell all our local friends to be aware. read more

Awesome food. Affordable, well prepared sushi...in Newmarket! Honestly, we should be grading them on a different scale based on location but there is no need! Just as good as the other Kume locations but without the hibachi tables. We've been here many times with the kids and they love it too. The funky electro-glitter lighting is a little over the top but the kids love it. Great sushi, great cooked dishes as well. And I have to give a shout to their take out. We ordered over a dozen sushi rolls for a party and they unexpectedly came on great large disposable catering trays with nice central garnish. All for less than $100. I would definitely recommend adding Kume sushi rolls to your party buffet. read more

Immediate qualifier: I'd like to return here when life is more normal. Choosing to order takeout on New Year's Eve was probably the worst idea ever. So our first Kume experience wound up being when they were most slammed, most out of control, and probably paying the least attention to presentation and detail. At one point, when the group hovering outside the restaurant was about two dozen strong, someone called inside and learned they were processing 50 orders simultaneously. My calling an order in at 3:30pm for a 6:30pm pick-up still meant standing outside for 35 minutes in the cold. It was a combo of sushi and gyoza and initially I had thought that the prices were pretty great so I left a $19 tip on an $81 order just because. When we got home, we discovered that one of the $14 rolls never made it into the order. So the $ actually did sting a little more. There just was no way to check an order - more of a grab and run situation. From a taste standpoint, ok not fab. But I think some of that probably was due to things like a shrimp tempura roll losing its crunch during transportation. From a presentation standpoint, it felt like they were just moving too fast. None of the rolls held together when you picked them up. Where lettuce was involved in a roll (summer roll - rice wrapper) there were big chunks of untrimmed iceberg as if they used the part at the base of the head of lettuce. I had to dismantle it a bit to get a bite! Again though, I'm hoping this was just a colossally bad night to try out a restaurant for the first time - and takeout too. Other reviews have been promising so we do want to try it again. It's hard to imagine that the broader Seacoast area wouldn't have good sushi places... read more

We really enjoy their variety of speciality rolls that suit all tastes. They have good drink specials on week days. In town getting our daughter situated for senior year at UNH. From California, we are accustomed to the BEST cuisine and sushi. Kume has THE BEST sushi. Atmosphere is amazing, owners Rachel and her husband make such a wonderful experience with highest quality food. As a vegetarian, I often get a boring option but here, there were several rolls unique and SO good!!!! The lunch specials are outstanding and we hope the kids come here often this year. Our favorite sushi spot. Always fresh and delicious. Curbside is fast and online ordering is very convenient.

Expect great sushi/seafood. Everything else? Depends on your tastes. Two specific examples: I highly recommend the Sunomono. Traditionally, it is a cucumber vinegar salad, but here they pack plenty of assorted raw fish in it (it's actually like 85% fish and 15% cucumber), which at its price is not only a great value but tastes amazing. There's a great mix of fish flavors and textures and the vinegar marinades the fish beautifully, balancing sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors. I ordered the Tom Yum Soup, which was interesting. I expected a very sour, spicy, rich broth. Instead, I got a soup that was only mildly tangy, sweet, and bordering on creamy. Not what I expect from a Tom Yum Soup, but they did pack it with plenty of great seafood and mushrooms, which I love. I did enjoy it and it's a good value given what's in it, I just don't feel that it's "Tom Yum Soup". The Uni Shot (contains sake) was by far the best thing I had that day, but it's a special so I don't know how long it's going to be there for. It's a bit pricey (5 per shot) but if you want to experience a [large] mouthful of an incredible combination of flavors that will knock you off your socks, go for that one. read more

I've always loved a simple California roll, that changed when i tried Kume Bistro. I got take out at the Newmarket location, just two California rolls. That night i could not fall asleep, felt hot, stomach pains, the whole food poising symptom list. I ended up vomiting on and off for hours. I thought maybe it was just a random thing. I went with my partner to the Epping location yesterday and once we got home the same thing happened. Puking, feeling hot, etc. Like i said I've had California rolls before and ate them with no problems at other places, but the two times i've ate from Kume, i've wasted my money. Holy crap, I haven't posted a review for this AWESOME place? Shame on me! I've eaten here DOZENS of times (and had takeout dozens more). I can't be happier with a restaurant, and it's a delightful bonus that it is stumbling distance from my front door. That reminds me -- try one of those foo foo drinks served in a bowl bigger than your head. My wife always gets the Maki Combination A (California roll, tuna roll, salmon roll, miso soup and salad) which is a bargain at $12.50. I load up on a few tuna rolls (another bargain at $4.50 each) and then find something else on the menu. I have never been disappointed with a dish here! Lastly, the staff are wonderful. They are incredibly friendly and make you feel like family. We are incredibly lucky to have such a fine sushi place here in town. This is an excellent addition to our local dining options. We had fantastic meals while visiting Kume for the first time. I had a hibachi steak plate which comes with soup, salad, veg, and fried rice. All of it had so much flavor and was cooked perfectly. My wife had a chicken soup, which came in a gigantic bowl and the California Roll. She loved her food too. The service was prompt and friendly. The restaurant is a little small, but very modern and clean. I think they are going to do very well as word gets out about Kume. I noticed that they have quite a strong take out business too.
