I was working in the area and decided to grab lunch before heading back to the office. I searched Yelp to see what was good nearby and this place had great reviews, so I gave it a try. I ordered online and was able to walk in and pick it up with ease. The online order estimated about 25 minutes, but my food was ready in closer to 10 to 15 minutes, which was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant itself is beautiful. I even snapped a couple of photos while using the restroom and grabbing my order. Dining in would definitely be a very enjoyable experience. Another plus is that there is plenty of parking that is free and easy to access, which made stopping in stress free. The lunch deals are great and the portions are perfect. Most importantly, the food was delicious. I would absolutely try this place again when I'm back in the area. read more

When you walk into a "sushi" restaurant, you never know if it's going to be a legit sushi place or not. Kumo Sushi & Asian should really just stick with "Asian". It's definitely Asian, but it's not very good. In fact, it was downright horrible. I asked if the Shumai was freshly made in the back or frozen. He answered, "Frozen." Then, I asked if the gyoza was freshly made or frozen & he answered, "We don't make any of that there the back." So, basically - this place just buys frozen Asian foods and then heats them up. So, I decided to go with something "safe" and I ordered the agedashi tofu. Agedashi tofu is a Japanese dish, but this place is clearly not a Japanese-owned restaurant because it was called "Age Tofu" on the menu. Sadly, when they brought it out, it was drowning in some sort of sauce that was not doshi broth. I also ordered the General Tso's chicken because I figured that maybe they'd do a better job with a Chinese entree. Nope. It, too was drowning in sauce. And, the thing is - I love Asian sauces. But, I want to taste the actual protein, too. The chicken was overcooked and I think they thought that the sauce would hide it...but it did not. The other funny thing is that the General Tso's dish came with an egg roll and fried rice. The egg roll appeared to be previously frozen, too because it had that "reheated taste". Oh - and fried rice is supposed to have a lot of vegetables in it. My fried rice had like 3-4 specs of carrot. It was horrible. Finally, the two pieces of broccoli that were part of my General Tso's chicken were also frozen and reheated. NOTHING about Kumo was fresh. This is lazy & disgraceful. Since Kumo was now 0-8 on fulfilling menu items, I figured I'd get a mango mochi dessert. Dang - they put so much whipped cream on it that you couldn't even find the mochi. Basically, this place was so disappointing. I had leftovers because it was so bad & I couldn't finish, but I wouldn't even feed the leftovers to anybody I know. Gardendale needs a better option. read more

A coworker and I arrived at 4PM on a Tuesday when they open for dinner hours. We were seated immediately, a server asked for our drinks and brought them promptly. She even asked if we weee ready to order when she brought our drinks which I appreciated but we did need a little extra time I ordered the hibachi chicken and my co worker ordered the Mongolian beef. It seems the portion of the Mongolian beef was larger than hibachi which I wasn't expecting. The salad dressing was a little watery compared to what I was use to but it was still good. The chicken was okay. It seemed a little over cooked but that's better than under cooked! The fried rice and vegetables are the highlights. Hibachi chicken 7/10 Salad 7/10 I'm giving 5 stars for the service and consideration that some people may prefer their hibachi this way. It was overall good. Delicious sushi. Went during their Valentine's Day Weekend Special. Fried Gyoza some of the crispiest and most flavorful I've ever had - and I've traveled far and wide. Service was attentive, staff were lovely, and the restaurant was clean. Highly recommend the spicy California roll and the spicy snow crab roll. I had been craving chicken lo mein. I've never been to this restaurant before and was skeptical but the reviews were good so I went and did a to go order. They definitely satisfied my lo mein fix. The middle were flavorful before adding soy sauce and yum yum I could've ate them plan but why not. I got an egg roll. It was good as well with good flavors and crisp. This was our first time trying Kumo Sushi & Asian and I was really impressed with the food and the service! Thanks to our waitress Cindy! My first impression of the restaurant was that it's nice but not as upscale as the pictures look online. Either way it's really nice. It's not a social hibachi where you gather around the table and watch your food being prepared. If you like booth seating there's plenty of that here! Now for the food! To start I got a cocktail (Bahama Mama.) For me it was a 10/10. The flavor was so good and mixed very well and I couldn't taste the alcohol at all but the alcohol snuck up on me and about 5 minutes later I was feeling pretty good. I got a side order of shrimp hibachi (which only came with shrimp) so I had to get an order of noodles on the side. I also got the Volcano Roll and it was really delicious! My fiancé got an order of chicken fried rice which he gave a 7/10 but I thought it was pretty good. We both loved our waitress Cindy! What a sweetheart. She was super helpful with answering questions and pretty much recommended everything I ordered aside from the drink. Really great service. I'm not sure how often I would visit due to the drive but if you're in the area I would recommend a visit for sure! read more

Delicious! Yelp! Kumo's you are simple delicious. Service is always friendly and good. We brought you home. And because those bags were calling me, I have zero photos. Bae had your General's lunch special. I had the Hibachi chicken lunch special, Yum. But, I was most impressed with your Hot and Sour soup, that stuff is good. I loved the crispy chips with my soup! By the way, when customers pay extra for Crispy chips, they expect more than 2 small limited filled bags. I'm not gonna take a star, cause this food good. But, loose them crispy chips. I ordered Door Dash from Kumo Sushi & Asian Friday night (01/26/2023). There was a DEAD ROACH in the chicken teriyaki. The dead roach was at the bottom of the to go plate. My family was mortified!!! How can this happen? I have attempted to call to report the incident; however, no answer. I contacted the Health Department and the BBB. I ordered Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box, Sesame Chicken, 2x Dumplings. I looked their score up and it has not been updated since 09/2023. Someone needs to go at there ASAP and complete a thorough inspections! If bugs are freely roaming around in their kitchen, I can only imagine what microorganisms are growing in their kitchen and restaurant as well. PLEASE CHECK YOUR FOOD BEFORE CONSUMING!!! read more

This place when it first opened up was actually pretty good. But man how this place has changed. Overpriced entrees for one. Their chicken entrees are horrible. Is it even chicken!?! The sushi is ok though. Their soups are not the same as well. They smell very unpleasant like something is not right about them. I would have given this review 2 stars because the servers are really nice and friendly but there are too many 5 star reviews when i know it not to be true. We found this almost hidden gem while traveling thru AL and were pleasantly surprised. The friendly & prompt service was appreciated after a long journey. But the food and attention to detail by the sushi chef was refreshing and surprising to find in this suburban Birmingham location. The chef was trained in NYC, bringing excellent experience & creativity to each dish. If you only try the common rolls, you will be missing the true gifts of this chef. We have been blessed to eat at great sushi places around the country & even in Tokyo. I would put this young, bright new chef up there with some others. The salmon was great and I enjoyed my sushi. The rice was pretty basic and tasted way better with the yum yum sauce. I didn't quit care for the soup. Their food, is by far the most palitible and visually actractive as well. KUMO Special is a succulent, smooth, warm, combination of crab and cream cheese quickly fried in an outer crispy crust that melts in your mouth.
