My daughter is starting her 7th grade classical program at Skinner West. I took her to Mathnasium West Loop today, hoping to find something that is helpful to her academics. The director named Andrew hosted us with a big smile on his face. Andrew spent 10-15 minutes with my daughter for an initial assessment. After that, he took me to the office for "consultation". 1. He told me my daughter was doing pretty good and being respectful. 2. He shared with me that my daughter could not solve 3^(-2). He also shared with me that the 7th grade classical program assumed students already knew this. (Okay, really?) 3. He recommended two sections per week, one hour each. When I asked how would each section entail. He said something about develop a learning plan and execute the plan. I asked again how my daughter would be spending her time in one typical section . Andrew didn't directly answer my question. I pressed on, asking whether it is about working on some problems with the help of tutors. Andrew seemed to acknowledge it. 4. I asked about the qualifications of the tutors. Andrew told me it varies. The tutors can be parents, rock climbers, UIC students, high school students. They are trying to limit the use of high school students though. 5. I asked whether it is okay for my kid to try a couple of sessions (with payment), before we fully commit. He questioned me why the trial is needed. I told him each kid is different, we want to make sure there is a good fit between my daughter and the teaching/tutoring service. 6. Andrew questioned me on why I was being so "cynical" and asked if there is anything he can help with my problem. 7.
