My student and I witnessed a minivan plow into a concrete barrier as we were walking over to Kenzo Ramen, steps away from Chatime. We both heard a crunch and knew that it wasn't good. I parked at the back of this plaza, where there is a store that sell diapers and adult incontinence pads. There used to be a Goodwill store, but a few new businesses have taken over. Anyway, after my student, a colleague, and I had finished eating a late lunch at Kenzo Ramen last Friday, we headed over to Chatime. I had a free birthday drink waiting for me. I decided to use it towards a regular QQ lychee juice, which comes with tapioca and coconut jelly. I didn't know where to line up after placing my order. I finally figured it out when I saw the small ledge through the huge lineup. I like that you can purchase reusable straws that come with a cleaner. I want to get the purple one. Each kit goes for $5. My drink was ready. I got it, and drove my student and I back to the office. The lychee juice was great. I managed to suck a tapioca ball the wrong way and went into a coughing fit in my car. Luckily, my student knows CPR and didn't have to administer it on me. I now realize that tapioca can be hazardous to your health. Anyway, the tapioca and coconut jelly were delightful when eaten safely and properly! I don't normally visit Chatime, but will definitely go back. We had to go outside of the store to get to a washroom, and a cool place to sit and enjoy our drinks. The customer service was good because there was no one else in the shop. There were 5 small tables and a long counter for standing beside. One table had lots of crumbs on it. The shop was reasonably modern and clean. There is easy-listening music playing in the background. They also sell cakes and cookies (new item) from Bakecode, their sister company. There is free WiFi. The shop is wheelchair accessible, but there is no door-open button. There is one gender-neutral washroom, but it is not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. There were actually quite a few people coming in and out during the 5-10 mins that I was in the store. Gazing quickly at the menu, I ended up ordering a REGULAR-SIZED PEARL MILK TEA (their no. 1 drink according to their menu) with 70% sugar and light ice ($5.31 with tax included). The drink itself was still too sweet for me, so I'd probably opt for 50% sugar next time. However, I was impressed by how QQ (i.e. chewy) their tapioca was! So good. The staff were not rude, but service was definitely nothing to rave about. They barely made eye contact with customers and really only had the intention of taking your order and passing you your drink... Basically, to move the lines along as fast as possible.
