Truly couldn't be any happier with the food, staff, and atmosphere at Kungfu Kitchen. I had no idea that the perfect Chinese restaurant could exist. Kungfu Kitchen is dishing out all the right authentic dishes that you'd usually have to go to multiple restaurants to get. Soup dumplings, steamed dumplings, pan-fried buns, noodle soup, clay pot, and chongqing spicy chicken just to name a few things. They all come out at the right temperature looking picture perfect. My current favorite dishes are the shredded spicy pork with cilantro and the pan-fried peking duck bun. The shredded spicy pork is thinly sliced, has a nice touch of spice to it (could be spicer for sure), and is served with an extra healthy dose of cilantro. I'm a cilantro lover, and this dish just melts my heart with the heaping amount they put in. The onions and green peppers in the dish add a nice textural crunch to it all. The pan-fried pecking duck bun is where it's at. The sweet duck meat is diced up nice and small so that you get a nice even distribution of the filling with each bite. The fried outside of the bun add a nice subtle crunch, while the wonderfully soft, pillowy dough of the bun absorbs some of the flavoring of the filling and honestly gets close to tasting like a sweet/savory dessert. A special shout out goes to the pork and crab soup dumplings for 2 reasons. (1) the skin did not break when picking up the dumplings, and (2) they're using real crab and not "krab" with a "k"! They do charge $1.50 for a side of white rice, which I'm actually okay with considering how some other restaurants give so much rice that ends up being wasted. NOTE: For dine in, food comes out when it's ready not necessarily in an appetizer then entree order. They do a lot of to-go orders and seem to have a very efficient method for picking up carry-out orders (table set up front by the door where to-go orders are placed with the name on the receipt). 10/10 will go again! read more

The soup dumplings were probably the best from the three items we ordered. They came out quickly, steaming hot, had just the right amount of soup, and overall delicious. The black vinegar sauce was a little sweeter than I prefer. The shredded pork with cilantro dish was pretty good. I don't think I would order it again though. I personally did not find it to be spicy. I was hoping it would be as spicy as shredded pork with hot longhorn green peppers at an authentic Szechuan restaurant. The brace pork tasted a little dry and stiff. The sauce was OK. I would not recommend this dish to anyone. I was really hoping to like this restaurant because it is so close and I want to support small local businesses. Unfortunately it was a little too disappointing to try it again. I love this spot! Delectable baos, crispy flash-fried green beans (the perfect verdant shade of green! plus, garlicky spicy bits), tummy-filling clay pot rice dishes with that fall-apart-in-your-mouth pork belly. Yes! Yum! Expect to spend a pretty penny, but the food is worth it here. I don't see it as my regular weekly spot because how pricey it is (for Chinese casual food, at least. But it's not exorbitant on the grand scheme of things!) It is, however, worth the splurge for a nice treat when you want excellent cuisine or want to dine to impress! I came here when a friend was visiting from out of town from the Bay Area and NY. Both food cities where the cuisine is just on a different level. Went here for lunch a week or so ago. Being from NYC, I like to think that my authentic Chinese food standards are pretty high, so my critique of Kungfu kitchen is based on this experience. We tried the braised beef noodle soup, duck baos, xiao long bao, smashed cucumbers, and salt and paper fried shrimp. We really enjoyed the duck baos and xiao long baos, but they weren't the best we had. The soup and everything else was pretty mediocre. This place popped up when I was looking for more authentic chinese food (not the fast food joints). Based on the pictures and reviews, I thought I would check it out. I ordered pork soup dumplins, scallion pancakes, house special noodle soup, string beans, and braised pork belly. All delicious. So pleasantly surprised with this place. Kungfu kitchen is located in an unassuming strip mall off Duke St before you reach old times Alexandria. I went at 1:30pm on a Tuesday so there were only two other tables with guests. We got served super fast. I heard this place had great soup pork dumplings so I ordered that and a couple other dishes. I was so excited when then dumplings came that I forgot to take a pic. It was super "soupy" and just delicious and literally bursting with flavor (I know, I got it all over my sweater!). Lesson learned. We also got the house stir fried noodles and spicy chongqing chicken. Both so amazing and tasted very authentic - nothing like the Americanized Chinese food you get at your everyday Chinese restaurant. The food is also delicious, the décor superior, the wait staff very nice and attentive, and basically nothing could be better! I am speaking as someone who lives in Rockville -- the de facto Chinatown of the D.C. area -- so I have regular access to a plethora of great Chinese foods (by which I mean, from various regions) and so I know! Of what I speak, that is! I had the Woodear Mushroom Salad there and got two more salads to go, those being the Cubed Cucumber Salad and the Green Onion Tofu Salad. Of these, I enjoyed the Green Onion Tofu Salad the most -- in part because I love tofu and in part because of the ample amount of toasted sesame oil used in the dressing, plus the fresh, satisfying crunch of the yummy green onions .... Food was delicious, but service was overwhelmed with the attention drawn towards take out orders. No fault to them but it seemed to be our server who also answered phones, checked the computer orders, met with the take out customers...to finally assisting us. And we were the only table for a while. May have just been bad timing Now...the meal! The sliced beef tendon was one of the better of this dish we have had as it is our family's favorite. The scallion pancake with beef was also very tasty! And of course the soup dumplings was hearty and filled with a spoonful of soup! The food is beyond great. I was so sad that I couldn't eat more, but did take them home and hubby and I had dinner with the leftovers. The service was great. Just one server at the time we went but surprisingly not a lot of patrons. The ambiance plus be better, but they had a show on of a girl that would just cook and her and her grandma would eat it. They're still using paper plates and plastic silverware "post" pandemic. And we were eating soup dumplings, so it got quite messy. Wasn't a fan of the chicken with chili oil, had a weird sweet taste to it. Soup dumplings 6/10, and beef scallion wrap 3/10. The ratio of beef to other fillings were almost nonexistent, but the texture of the wrap was great. Asked for a straw because I eat my soup dumplings weird, and add the sauce using a straw. The waiter kept saying "I really don't recommend it" because he thought I was gonna drink the soup LMAO I mean.... I've been to a lot of places that serve soup dumplings and some offer a straw, I'm just used to that. This is a small restaurant that has high quality fresh taste. I specifically visited here for the soup dumplings and was completely satisfied with the hospitality and flavors of the food. The first thing we tried was the crab and pork soup dumplings. These probably had the most soup in a dumpling that I have ever had. I bit into the first one and so much soup went into my mouth but what surprised me was that even more squirted out on to the table. We also tried the pork and gourd soup dumpling and the pork and shrimp steam dumplings. All of these dumpling were of the highest quality. I enjoyed dinner here with my wife and son, and we all agreed it was fantastic. Everything we tried, from the soup dumplings to the Peking duck bun to the scallion pancakes with beef to the Mala beef noodle soup, was flavorful and tender. This place may be tucked away in a plaza, but it has some of the best baos and soup dumplings around! The food is well executed and portion sizes are solid. The Pan Fried Steam Buns have that perfectly crispy bottom and soft pillow-like top that perfectly contains the juicy pork meat and soup inside. The two types of soup dumplings that I got, the regular and crabmeat, were both fantastic and among the very best that I've had anywhere in the U.S. Such delicate skins, hot rich soup, and flavorful fillings in each little dumpling. Finally the Spring Onion Pancakes were nice and crispy on the outside but just soft and pliable enough when you bite down. What better way to get back to this beloved (past and now present again) hobby of mine than to review my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE restaurant in the Northern Virginia area? I've been getting takeout from Kungfu Kitchen countless times over the past few years. This restaurant is extraordinary! The food is always tasty, the portions are generous, and you can just tell that the food is made with love! I absolutely love love love Sichuan food, and the Poached Beef in Hot Chili Oil from Kungfu Kitchen never fails to turn even the worst of days and weeks around. It's my absolute comfort and soul food, and I will get it time and time again. I've also ordered and loved their dumplings, and their spicy string bean dish is also an absolute go-to for me. I get it... I get it... this place is too expensive. I actually came here out of desperation because I had the worst pizza at Frank Pepe. Their pizza was inedible and I wanted "revenge food" so I headed to Kung Fu Kitchen next door. I already knew each dish was around $17+ which would scare anyone who's used to more humble prices at Chinese spots, but I wanted to be satisfied. I order away and was stunned at every dish that came out. The BEST Dan Dan Noodles I've had in the DMV. Very large portion with the noodles having a clear hand-pulled noodle texture. Very bouncy and fresh. A mountain of Dan Dan meat that would make any Dan Dan fan happy. Next was the Spicy Chongqing chicken. I've been cutting back on fried food, but this dish was so irresistible due to the Spicy peppercorn and Roast Garlic nestled on top of each fried morsel. So addicting! Lastly, the Soup Dumplings. Much smaller than the last time I had it, but satisfying nonetheless. Bob's in Maryland still has my heart, but Kung Fu XLB does the job in Virginia. The prices for online carry out orders, through GrubHub, seemed higher than normal prices, so I just decided to order at the restaurant. Located at Alexandria Commons Shopping Center, Kungfu Kitchen is very close to the 495 Beltway and is easy to get to. My order included pork soup dumplings and pan fried Peking duck buns. The soup dumplings came with 6 pieces per order; and at $10.55, is pretty consistent with other places. Taste wise, the soup dumplings were juicy and did not disappoint. Not having had Peking duck in months since COVID-19 began, I've been wanting to get Peking duck and was going to order that for dinner tonight. I ordered the shredded beef with chili noodles, and my colleague ordered the pig ears and pig feet because she was told it is good for collagen... lol! She said the pig ears were a tad salty but good. Anyways, my noodles were so good! Personally, I didn't find it spicy but I also have a high tolerance for spice. Although, I don't not eat pig feet, I did try a small piece. I'm not sure what pig feet is supposed to taste like- however it did not have a "piggy" taste and it did have some heat. I was excited to try this place as the noodles and dumplings looked amazing. I ordered a few dishes for delivery as I was super excited to try the food. The items that i ordered were the Pork Soup Dumplings, Shrimp & Pork Steamed Dumplings, Pan-Fried Peking Duck Bun, Roasted Duck Stir-Fried Noodles, and Roasted Duck Soup Noodles. The Shrimp & Pork Steamed Dumplings were my favorite. I enjoyed the dumplings and the filing was soo good. The other items i ordered were pretty disappointing to me. After eating the Shrimp & Pork Steamed Dumplings, I thought the Pork Soup dumplings would be really good but i didn't enjoy the meat filling at all. The flavor wasn't as good as I expected it would be. The Pan-Fried Peking Duck Bun was too sweet for me and there also wasn't that much Duck inside of the bun. For the Roasted Duck Stir-Fried Noodles, the actual noodles were really good and I liked the sauce it was cooked in. However, the pieces of duck we got were just straight bones with no meat. It almost seemed like a waste to pay for Duck in the noodles. For the Roasted Duck Soup Noodles, the broth was bland. I also had the same issue with the soup that the pieces of duck were mostly just bones and no meat. I was pretty disappointed with this order. Unsure if it was because I ordered so many items with duck. Recently went here for a quick Anniversary dinner because we were feeling the need to have soup dumplings. Well, let me tell you. We got much more than that. The braised beef noodle soup came out first and we shared it. Not easy to share because the bok choy was a good size, but we managed. Love the thickness and tenderness of the noodles, btw. So then our other dishes came out. The house crispy shrimp came in a light crispy edible container...and the shrimp was both crispy and juicy! What!? Oh, and green. Yes, that's right. Green from the Wasabi in the mayo mix. It tasted amazesauce! Definitely ordering that again. The scallion pancakes and crab and pork soup dumplings were perfect with the dipping sauce. For the foodies who have a more discerning palate and criticized the noods, I hear you. However, I really enjoyed their new menu item Dan Dan Noodles. Crazy spicy and very tasty, I'm currently sweating Yes, their dumplings are the star here, but we also really enjoy their fried string beans, pepper beef fillet, mapo tofu, sautéed potato green pepper and eggplant, and my wife is a big fan of yuxiang shredded pork. This place sort of reminds me of Peter Changs. Not in the respect that everywhere you turn on the menu you're greeted with spicy szechuan chili's that both excite and exhaust after a point; but in the respect that the 'hits' we had were REALLY spot on, which in turn made the misses (which wern't terribly egregious) all that more surprising. The sweet sauce stole that super savory vinegary last bite that I truly adore with soup dumplings. The cucumber salad was an adaptation that was well received. With no noticeable chili oil, and clearly appearing knife cut and not smashed, I was extra curious when it was set down on the table. After one bite they turned pringle: I just couldn't stop. The waitress let us know that the spicy kick was from jarred pepper brine. They were quite addictive. Steamed buns with mushroom and bok choy had a pleasant texture throughout and were well seasoned. And the scallion pancake with sliced beef came in a size that I both respected and fawned over. Would certainly order these 4 things again and again and again and again. The misses: Dry noodles with lamb carried more of that pungent lamb musk than I could swallow both figuratively and literally. The cumin heavy dish lacked balance and layers. The noodles with soup *spicy pork edition was also a let down in the flavor department. Soup broth was one dimensional and lacked general umami characteristics. The crispy radish cake, though perfectly formed, were dry and the filling lacked seasoning. All in all, this is a place where I'm gonna make my way through the menu. First things first - based on all previous reviews, we were worried about service. It was prefectly fine. We didn't have to wait to be seated, our food was served quickly, and staff were kind and helpful. Great experience. Perhaps the early on soft opening wrinkles have been ironed out. We ordered: 1. Pan-fried egg and chive dumpling - okay, but not our favorite. 2. Mushroom and bok choy streamed dumpling - super tasty. We'll ordered these again. 3. Seafood stir-fry noodles - also tasty, and perfectly spicy (not very spicy, but good flavor) I'd add a sixth star if I could because they were showing these EXCESSIVELY compelling videos on the TV. I asked what they were and it's apparently from an "internet celebrity" named Li Ziqi. Okay. I'm hooked. The videos are of her doing "mundane" tasks like picking the berries and leaves needed to make a tea or roasting peanuts or making a dress. But, everything is done in an otherworldly pastoral environment with open fire stoves, outdoor sinks, and little pets or her Nana in the background. Fabulous. Outstanding. I'm obsessed. So glad I found this mall spot that serves xlbs and hand pulled noodles! It's pretty small and in a shopping center. It's still in it's soft opening but it seems like words gotten around! There aren't that many tables, but they were all full and we had to wait about 20 minutes for a table for 6 on a Friday night. They definitely don't have enough staff yet, there was a wait for everything: silverware, napkins, water, etc... But it doesn't change the food! Yes, you can get better xlbs elsewhere (like Bob's in Bethesda or so many spots in NY) but these are great for local spot and the best I've tried in Northern VA. I tried both the crab with pork and the shrimp with okra. Both were delicious, but the shrimp was the winner for me! Food is actually quite good. However, service is so abysmal that it negates any positive points. For the 2nd time in a row, one person in our party got her appetizer and entree together a solid 15 minutes before anyone else was served anything at all. The first person was ready to head out by the time anything else arrived at the table. Wow... This place surprisingly exceeded our expectations! Given its location, we were a bit skeptical of its authenticity. As soon as I walked in, the interior was modern and very clean. Of course, we had to try the xiao long bao, considering how there's not really many good options around in the DMV area. We ordered the crab meat and pork xiao long bao, the stir-fried dao xiao noodles - the house special version, and the Shanghai pan-fried pork buns. The noodles and xiao long bao came out first and they were so delicious! The xiao long bao had rich, warm soup broth on the inside and the filling to broth ratio with the wrapper was perfect. If only there was a way to space out the xiao long bao more because one of ours did burst when we tried to remove it from the bamboo steamer, so just be careful when you're eating them because you don't want to lose any of the delicious broth! The dao xiao noodles were super filling. They had a thick and chewy texture and there was an abundant amount of various meats and seafood! I do wish there was a bit more of a green garnish/veggies and the noodles seemed to have varying sizes and lengths, but overall it was still very good. We were decently full after splitting the two dishes and had hoped that they forgot about the Shanghai pan-fried pork buns, but these arrived a bit after we finished the other two dishes. It's like a thicker version of a xiao long bao and the bun is similar to a traditional bao bun. The inside had soup and also meat as well. I prefer xiao long bao over these Shanghai buns, but it was still really delicious! It's a lot thicker, so it will fill you up, but the inside taste with the meats is similar to the xiao long bao. Oh, also use their vinegar sauce that they provide! It's sooo good and less stronger than typical vinegar sauces, with a hint of sweetness. I don't like vinegar, but this suited my tastes. Overall, no complaints of service. Service was very prompt and our server was very kind. You even get candy when you get the bill! I'd recommend anyone craving authentic Chinese food to take a chance and come here and definitely try their xiao long bao, it may be the best in the area so far! read more

Really great spot in Alexandria for authentic Chinese food. If you are coming here looking for some orange chicken, this is NOT the spot for you (I legit saw customers walk in asking for this dish, and being very disappointed to hear that this was not available here). Their menu is pretty extensive and offers many authentic dishes such as soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, braised pork, mapo tofu, and even pig feet! The soup dumplings were decent. The buns were steaming hot, and the filling was very flavorful. My only criticism is that parts of the bao were a little dough-y and thick and would have been better if a little thinner. The beef noodle soup was tasty, and the beef very tender. Lots of to-go orders which made me glad to see business was doing well as the restaurant itself was pretty empty. Will come back when I'm craving authentic Chinese! read more

The good: Best soup dumplings in the DMV area! The broth is plentiful and flavorful. We had a full lunch, but easily had two baskets of this as a snack. The pork is cooked well, and the wrapper is thin and delicate. I love the decor of the restaurant and there is a lot to catch your eye. I understand that they opened in mid-December for a soft opening, and came with the expectation that we would have to wait. (We actually came once before on a Saturday around 5:30 but left when the waitress told us that they ran out of soup dumplings and all the noodles). We came at 2 PM on a Sunday this time. We ended up waiting about 30 minutes for our soup dumplings, and the staff handed us the check even before the soup dumplings arrived. Also, there must have been 3 or 4 big deliveries that came through the front door while we were there, and I never realized before that I've never seen that happen before at another restaurant. I might wait a bit to come back despite the yummy soup dumplings until the restaurant is up and running more smoothly. read more

The food tastes amazing! Highly recommend the noodles. The XLB was really good, but pricey at $14 for only 6 dumplings. Definitely one of the top Chinese restaurants in the Alexandria area.
