I had the fun experience of trying disc golf a few years ago with some of my best friends. When we…read morewent, I had the benefit of trying a beautiful course that people had put time and effort into. Since moving here, I was excited to try playing again and was a little disappointed to learn that O'ahu only has four functional courses. We started playing them with Dexter's Alley, which is located on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam; it should be said first that you need base access to play on this course! Going to Dexter's Alley, it's clear to see that once this course had a lot of time and effort put into it. Today, while still super fun, it's missing some of the grandeur necessary to make it a truly great course. The disc golf enthusiast that created the course has since moved from O'ahu and taken about four baskets necessary to make this complete. While this is a disappointment, it can easily be remedied by picking natural formations (like trees) to stand in for the missing baskets. It makes these holes less of a challenge, but one can still complete the course. Dexter's Alley is in JBPHH, right inside the main Hickam gate. It's in a residential so be respectful to the homes and yards surrounding the public space. Dexter's Alley is an alley/park, with plenty of parking. There is a road that runs through the course, but it's almost never used. On base, there is free parking almost everywhere, just pay attention to the signs. One big benefit of this course is it's free. It's also open anytime, so come at your leisure (obviously, it's better during daylight). In this course, there the front 9 holes and the back 9 holes. These add to 18 total, by sharing certain baskets (and in this case, natural formations). This could cause periods of overlapping the same hole, just be patient and wait for others playing. The hazards on this course are the strong winds at this part of the island, and the highway/base entrance. If your disc goes over the fence, good luck getting it back easily! Please see the pictures or dgcoursereview.com for course maps and score cards. It's a nice flat area in the sun, very quiet and peaceful. All-in-all, a fun free activity!

Hmm... Disc Golf? I've played golf but not with frisbees. The better half decided to have the…read moresudden itch to play frisbee golf due to some nostalgic memories. I agreed to this since it's different and I was curious about those baskets with the chains on them. I wanted to know how different it was from normal golf besides the use of disc from a golf ball. Basically all rules are the same. The Course I was told the course is made by an individual that loved disc golf in the past. He made his own home made baskets with bike tires and other items you would probably find in a junk yard and put the course together. Amazing work! However, there are missing baskets on this 18 par course since the gentlemen had left Hawaii and took the other baskets with him. So use what you kindergarten teacher taught you and imagine or place a mark in place of those missing baskets. The trees would be the only shade since the course is not entirely maintained. For the most part, it is peaceful and not entirely busy. We've only encountered two people we had to share the course with. Give and Take Allow about a little over an hour or two depending on how honest you play the game by the book or how terrible you are in the game. The better half said give and take 1 hour. That's a lie!!!! As for me, I was terrible enough that I was 6 over on a par 3 course. (I can hear you laughing BTW!) Attire Since the course is not fully maintained, I would wear good shoes to prevent the grass briars from poking into your slippas. I wore jelly flats and they went straight through! Moisture wicking cool mesh or other sweat wicking garments are highly recommended since the course will have many patches of open visibility to the sun. Bring, sunblock, hats for the bald headed or nearly bald headed individuals. (You don't want to get burned up there) Lastly, keep hydrated and bring your Hydroflasks and some extra snacks in between a half range into your rounds to prevent from getting hangry (for the ladies). Important Info 1) Must have government ID to get in on base. 2) This is a free/gratis/libre course. 3) Adhere to parking rules and read the signs since this is burrowed deep within a residential area. 4) To locate the course, simply enter Dexters Alley on your navigation system and it should lead you on the spot. 5) Please see the link on the YELP bio site of Dexter's Alley for the map of the course and score sheet. 6) Stretch your heart out before swinging or throwing, your shoulders and muscles are going to hate you on your 14th hole. 7) BYOD- Bring your own Discs Otherwise, enjoy and have fun on this free course. This is a fun free course to start with especially if you're new to the game.

As Yelpers, our words and reviews are pretty darn powerful. We must put these businesses on the map so we can help get the word out that "Hey, they do exist and they are pretty damn awesome!" I didn't even know we had "Disc Golf" as a category on Yelp until the better half demanded we must fill this category in our region and let the world know that these places do exist on this island. There's nothing better than playing disc golf in paradise especially at this location. On one side of the course, you'll get the view of Hawai'i's pure aqua blue ocean while the scent of these gigantic trees are purposely on site high and low enough to make your game more challenging. Lets see you play this course. Okay, perhaps anyone can play this course better than I can. I am better off being the spectator or the photo girl on the sidelines. The entire course is only 9 baskets and all are par 3 whether it's short or long distances. I laughed at some of the "supposed par 3's" on this course because they didn't seem like they were. However, for the most part, my family was able to play the entire round without feeling any muscle aches from all the throwing. The 411 To get here you must enter through Bellows Air Force Station. Take Tinker Rd. all the way to the end of the road until the point check station. Upon driving in, the course is immediate to your right. 1) In order to play on this course, you need to have base access. 2) Free course! (Libre, Gratis) 3) You can either purchase your own set of discs from a local sporting goods or they can be rented at the pro shop. Prices so far on 8/6/16 (Per set $4= per day, $12=4 days, $20=week) 4) Bring comfortable and closed toe shoes. 5) Bring a pen and printed scorecards. http://www.dgcoursereview.com/scorecard.php?id=4488&tee=all Rules of the game are visible along with the map at the beginning of the course. The course is well marked with the few exceptions of basket 5 and 7. Again, the entire course is a par 3. Follow the map posted on your scorecards (map is also present at the beginning of the course) to aim at the correct baskets. These baskets are with a yellow rim marked specifically with their rightful rounds (i.e Basket 1/Par 3 = The correct number is on the yellow rim of each basket. So if you're starting from round 1 and your basket says 3, you're aiming at the wrong one. Don't let me confuse you and simply follow the map. It's a great course. If you accidentally miss throw your disc, you won't lose it easily anywhere you can't reach it. Unless you happen to throw it high enough and get it stuck on a tree. Bring your family and friends and enjoy this fun and friendly course. Bathrooms are inside the recreation office and parking is ample. The golf course parking lot is separate from the beach lot. So far, this is has been one of the cleanest and beautiful disc golf course I've ever played on.

Named after a pillar in the community who came to Kauai in the late 19th century, Lydgate Beach Park is 62 acres, with the Lydgate Park pathway encompassing 2.5 miles, a small part of the much larger Ke Ala Hele Makālae costal trail. There is plenty of parking, with both dedicated surface lots and street parking on the paved road. We immediately noticed surfers on electric surfboards out pretty far, even on this windy day. At the northern part of the park is where most people gather, close to modern facilities and a manned lifeguard station and a large covered event area with plenty of parking. Closer to the shore, we saw a seal just lying on the land, bathing in the sun, completely ignoring the people milling by. The very large safe man-made swimming/tide pools are great for the kekei and others, with constant refreshing of sea water over the lava rocks. There are picnic tables nearby as well with a lot of green space. My favorite feature are the man-made protected swimming pools, What I loved about it was how spread out everything was, with so many amenities. It just never felt crowded, even if a lot more people came. As we were leaving, my wife mentioned that Lydgate Beach is one of those rare parks where an ocean-loving family would intentionally live close by, just to be near this park.
