Egusi with fish and pounded yams was delicious

The egusi with fish and pounded yams were absolutely delicious. The ladies that greeted me were pleasant. My meal was only$10. I will definitely be back to try more

I'm spoiled by another restaurant. Although this place is much closer, the service here is rather slow and they are never busy, but the food is decent. I come for the food, I deal with the wait and I carry out.

This is the best dibi lamb I've had!…read more My first introduction to dibi lamb was at a Malian restaurant in West Philadelphia in the early 2000s. Since that time, I rotate between poisson and dibi whenever I get Senegalese food. West African restaurants are a dime a dozen in Philadelphia, but a lot of the food is just ok, with many of my favorite restaurants changing hands over the years and after COVID most of the food is meh at best. I recently had dibi at the gold standard for Senegalese food in Philadelphia and was disappointed. Fortunately, I have been able to order poisson and dibi from a Malian woman near me and I can make a passable version in a pinch. Two weeks ago, a friend posted on FB that this was the best meal she had ever had. As this was someone I know to have a breadth of experience with food, I was intrigued by the recommendation. So, while attending a conference in the area, I decided to give it a try. Unlike the Senegalese restaurant I recently visited in Chicago, this place was nice - the furnishings, decorations, and even the restroom was modern but authentic. The customer service was also refreshing. As soon as he set the plate down I knew it was going to be spectacular. There was a glorious aroma wafting from the lamb (which I'd ordered spicy), the plantains weren't glistening with oil, and the yassa condiment was a unexpected treat. The lamb was tender, seasoned to perfection and honestly I was so enamored with the food that I texted my friend to concur with her assessment. I was stuffed but didn't want the meal to end and I didn't want to leave. When I finished, I went to wash my hands and when I returned to the table I was disappointed that I had eaten it all. It was truly an outstanding meal with remarkable service. I wish them longevity and success because I intend to return with my family so they too can experience the deliciousness.

I asked for a refund and the manager was one of the least helpful individuals that I ever met. Bro really tried to argue with me over a piece of chicken. I've been multiple times and genuinely have not had one thing I didn't like. The tuna melt, wings, collard greens, bowls, pastries, lattes, cocktails...everything is consistently a 9 or 10 out of 10. But what makes Mama Koko's even more special is the experience. The owners and staff are incredibly warm, down-to-earth, and welcoming. It feels like going to your mama's or auntie's house, sitting down with your cousins, eating good food, and just enjoying everything that is Black greatness. The music, art, style, culture, and energy are all part of it. They feature local artists, the soul, R&B and hip-hop are always playing, everybody is fly, and the whole space just feels GOOD. Amazing food, amazing drinks, amazing people, amazing atmosphere. Mama Koko's is Baltimore at its best.

Btw service is just okay, same as my previous visit. This time I ate outdoor. Although they bring the food to your table after you order at the bar, they do not return. I had to move our plates to an empty table just to clear it. Late night menu: I ordered the vegan bowl. The yams and greens were really good. The rest of the bowl items were okay. I also ordered fried plantains, which were basic, but decent nothing special... The beans were seasoned well and shockingly good, the rice was just plain white rice... Vibe 5 stars... indoor and outdoor seating It appears to be an every age group type of environment. No tvs, forcing everyone to socialize which was cool... the only down side is the music is too loud to actually hold conversations inside when there is a DJ. Street parking is available.
