    Dukem Combo (4)

Heard a lot of good things about Dukem and honestly was not super impressed. I thought the food was good but nothing to write home about. I got the combo #4, it was a decent amount of food but was also pretty expensive in my opinion.

This was my first time having Ethiopian food and it was a wonderful experience. I was so happy to see so many options for vegetarian/vegan food! The service was excellent, the staff attended to our orders timely. The place is so warm and inviting, I will surely be back again to eat more food :)

I agree that this restaurant can be hit or miss but when we went fortunately it was a hit! Ordered the unity, which is a great sampler to share if you want to try a lot. Food doesn't come out piping hot. Only con is the price, has gone up over the year.

    Deluxe veggie platter #3

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and loved it. Our table of 3 ordered the deluxe special veggie platter #3 with fish. Everything was so flavorful. Our service was not too memorable; atmosphere was small but cozy. Hope to be back!

I've been eager to try Dukem for quite some time, and I'm happy to say it did not disappoint! This is my second experience with Ethiopian food; the first was at a restaurant in Ellicott City, but I can't really compare the two since I wasn't eating beef back then. I have to admit, I was a bit apprehensive about trying Dukem due to the mixed Yelp reviews. I ordered the Dukem combo number 2, which included regular beef tibs, key wot, minchet abish, and a tomato salad, along with injera. I didn't eat my meal until the next day, and when I heated it up in the microwave, the aroma was incredible. Ngl, I tried not to get too excited, worried I might be let down, but let me tell you, everything was fresh and delicious! If you're not into spicy food, this might not be for you, but for me, it was just right. The beef was tender with the perfect amount of fat, although there were a few chewy bits. I could have done without the salad. Also, I noticed the price listed online was lower than what I actually paid--almost a $3 difference. I can't wait to return and either try something new or reorder the same dish!

Dukem was on my Yelp bestie's Baltimore collection list for a while. We were craving some Ethiopian food. We were a group of three and decided to opt for a combination sampler. We chose to try the Dukum Combo (4), but later when we were billed they charged us for the Dukum Combo (5) so I'm not sure which one we ordered. In the past, we've had our waiters tell us which each thing was, but this server just gave us the plate with no explanation. Thankfully we've had Ethiopian in the past so we could guess which some things were. Like always, the injera was delicious. However, a lot of the things on our plate were a bit one dimensional. I wish they had more flavor like we're used to. While I'm happy we tried this spot, I wish things were a bit more flavorful.

    2. Deluxe Special Veggie #2 (14 items)

Stopped by with my vegetarian kid on a day trip to Baltimore. Although I'm a carnivore, I also love my veggies and I had high hopes for the deluxe veggie combination. I knew it would be pretty big so I just ordered one portion for the two of us. The plate was colossal and filled with a great variety of delicious things (see pic), including a yogurt dish I'd never had before. Injera bread was fresh and delicious. We were both stuffed and happy afterwards. Service wasn't super friendly but hey, I came to demolish injera not to make friends! Will happily return.

    Dukem Special Beef Tibs

I finally got a chance to try Ethiopian food for the first time, and it will definitely not be my last. Dukem gave me the opportunity to try a new culture of food on a whim. With a broad menu, which I was very inquisitive about, since many of the items I was unsure of what they were, I opted for the Dukem Special Beef Tibs. And it definitely pleased my palate. Seasoned tender chunks of beef cooked with peppers and onions. Delish! And the tomato salad which accompanied the dish was amazing. I could literally have eaten that alone. Broaden your horizons and give Dukem a try.

This was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and it was such a tasty and fun experience. The ladies who took our orders/served us were super understanding, explained the different menu options, and gave great suggestions as to what to order. I had one of the combo samplers, and it was delicious; I loved the sour notes of the veggies. You definitely get what you pay for; it's on the pricier side, but I had plenty of leftovers. It's also a tiny bit cramped; I wouldn't come here with a large group. But I would definitely come back here if I have a craving for Ethiopian food again.

Worst Doro wot I've had. They used chopped breast meat instead of whole chicken parts. For 70 dollars there very little.

Ask the Community - Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant

Does anyone know if this is a chain restaurant? I have seen many dukem Ethiopian restaurants in many locations on yelp. I don't know if they just have the same name, or if they are run by the same people

The Baltimore and and the DC Dukem are under the same ownership as far as I know. Not sure of the others.

The Arco's sign is still up, and when you enter, it looks exactly the same as the old Arco's and there's a very local white guy, Bob, the bartender, who greets you. (Bob, and the rest of the crew are fantastic, btw.) I was initially confused if I was in the right place. And, since it's exactly like Arco's, there's a back patio as well as ample indoor seating. The menu is also a bit disorienting since it covers everything from bagels to linguini to kitfo and tibs. We stuck to the Eritrean side of the menu, and were delighted with our food. For three people, we had the veggie platter, which had beets, so good they tasted like candy; the excellent lamb tibs, and the kitfo that Daniel, the Mexican manager/cook steered us away from ordering raw as we had done in Ethiopian restaurants. At around 7:30 on a Friday evening, we were the only ones eating, although there was a group of Eritrean young men on the patio and a few women at the bar. We talked with Solomon, the owner, about his country. We talked with Daniel about Mexico City. We talked with Bob about East Baltimore. Patsy Cline was playing on the jukebox in the bar. It was all a wonderful, very urban mishmash. Highly recommended for both the food and the atmosphere!

I've ordered the vegetarian platter a number of times (all sizes), and it's pretty standard Ethiopian fare, lentils, chickpeas, yellow peas etc., but they make it well and plentiful. My boyfriend has tried the lamb tibs (the awaze and the regular I think) and he loved the regular tibs. They have ample seating and a nice patio in the back, but I haven't seen that many people in there yet. I would definitely recommend Dahlak and I hope more people enjoy it so I can continue to have this food in my neighborhood!

We started our meal with the vegetable Sambusa. The wrapper was perfectly crispy, not greasy and, while flaky, didn't fall apart. The dipping sauce that accompanied was a perfect spicy complement to the lentil filling. A great way to get your tastebuds ready for the main event! For our entree, we went with the Special Combo for two with beef and chicken/doro wot. We allowed our helpful waiter to select the vegetables, and he did a great job. We enjoyed the yellow peas, spicy lentils, cabbage, spinach, scooping it all up with the sour injera bread. The service is excellent and the music makes the meal complete! We will be back soon to try more of the menu. This restaurant is a Herndon gem. I would give six stars if I could. Don't be stupid, like us, and wait too long to try it!! Go now!

When we finally found ourselves in the area, I was excited to see if it lived up to the hype. We ordered the veggie combo, and it was flavorful and satisfying. What really made this place stand out, though, was the customer service. We ordered takeout, and after getting home about 40 minutes later, we realized part of our order was wrong. I called expecting the usual response--either that I should've checked the bag before leaving or that I'd need to drive back for a replacement. Instead, I got a genuine apology and an offer for a full refund. Since we still had food to eat, I didn't feel right accepting it. They insisted on making it up to us the next time we were in the area. True to their word, on our next visit they treated us to the same veggie combo on the house. You don't see that level of follow-through very often, and it really left an impression. That's how you earn loyal customers. Big shoutout to Emmanuel for taking such great care of us. We're looking forward to coming back.

I always get the veggie combo, and I probably always will. Their tomato lettuce salad is perfection, not an afterthought, and I wouldn't mind if they gave me a whole bowls worth to grab in every bite! I've sampled bits of the meat off my partner's platters, and it far exceeds any we've ever tasted around here from an ethiopian restaurant. Back to the ambiance. I recently brought two good friends here because the space is bright and decent. That said, reservations are a MUST if you are bringing a party of larger than 2, due to how tiny the space is, and for a group, you really need to get spots either by the window or maybe their dark nook in the back. The food felt very Americanized, and the flavors were much milder than what I'm used to growing up with. The Awaze Tibs, in particular, lacked the bold, rich, spicy depth that makes the dish so special. It tasted like the seasoning had been toned down, and I found myself wishing for the authentic flavors I know and love. I understand that restaurants sometimes adjust recipes to appeal to a wider audience, but I hope they'll also consider staying true to the vibrant, unforgettable flavors that make Ethiopian cuisine so unique.
