The first time was by chance when my engine overheated and I pulled into the first gas station I could find. The owner of the Shell Station, which happens to be one block from JC Auto Bahn, recommended I go there and ask for Carlos. *I would advise that unless you are fluent in Spanish you also ask for Carlos. Or just look confused and start speaking in English and someone will immediately point to him. Despite the fact that I showed up 5 minutes before closing on a Friday, Carlos took his time and never seemed rushed to diagnose the problem. My car was ready the next day and all for a very fair price. He charged $350 for water pump, thermostat, new tubes and coolant replacement which could easily have been a $500+ repair. *The only downside, and reason I personally can't give it 5 stars, is because you can only pay with cash or check. And I rarely keep a large balance in my checking account or carry cash. On my very next trip into VA (the next weekend) my ancient car battery decides it's ready to die while I shop at Costco. Thankfully I was able to buy a new battery there but, without any tools and it feeling like 1,000 degrees in the parking lot, I walked over to the Costco tire center hoping for some good sameritan kind of help (or at least a tool.) After being asked to wait for 20 minutes and some negotiation one of them begrudgingly agreed to lend me a pair of pliers and demanded I leave collateral. Maybe they've had problems with heat-exhausted twenty-somethings scamming them for tools, I don't know. I replaced the battery myself in the parking lot but because the connector cables had been so corroded to the old battery the small bolt that holds the negative cable to the battery snapped. Still in my recent call log, I called JC Auto Bahn, again right before close, and they encouraged me to come by. When I got there they were all intensely standing around a small tv in the shop watching the end of the US world cup game. Despite the fact that I showed up at close and during the last 10 minutes of a world cup game, Carlos wasted no time grabbing the part he needed and fixed the cable. He charged $10 which was weirdly fortunate because the ONLY cash I had on me was $9 and change from the used battery return at Costco and some change in my cup holder. Not sure why my car has taken a liking to breaking down in VA, and I hope it never happens again, but at least I guess now I can say that I "have a car guy" in VA.

He's an awesome mechanic and will try to give you a good deal compared to other mechanic shops. A few days ago one of our cars started giving us problems and it turned out to be the alternator. We went to a nearby location to our home who wanted to charge us almost double (EXXON) than what he charged us. He's a reasonable guy to deal with and not pushy to fix more than what's needed to take your money.

I was so happy when I found Merv's. I thought they did good work and were honest. I was wrong. I brought my car to Merv's for service. I provided my own materials. My bill should have been around $30-$40. I was shocked when I looked at my bill. It was more than double what it should have been. I asked why it was so much. Merv, who was sitting in the front office began to squirm and told me it was because a wheel balance and tire rotation was performed. I immediately asked if it had actually been performed. I did not request that to be done. Rather than correct the invoice, Merv asked me if I wanted a credit. Really? You overcharge a customer and then ask if they want a credit. I was told that I had already received a discount because I provided my own materials. So, to recap, buying my own parts and not allowing a shop to overcharge me for materials is considered a discount. That's interesting....what Merv calls a discount is called fraud under Virginia state law. Buyer beware. The attempted gouge was far more expensive to Merv than he imagined. You have been warned.

The owner asked me how in love with the original engine I was. He told me it would save about half the cost of a rebuild to go with a crate motor. I asked more questions of him on the phone. We met in person later. He tried to tell me that what I wanted was too aggressive for my car. It would not be daily drivable. He could not define what he meant by that term.He was insisting that I did not know what I know about engines camshafts and my own car. Later I find out he is a computer programmer who bought the business from the man I used to know. They had my car for 7 days including a weekend. I learned nothing about what they were planning. The car sat outside. I decided to go somewhere else. They charged me $800 for basically a state inspection.

My friend recommended Wolf Autopower and I am really glad he did. Tihomir was very honest and up front with all costs. Not only did he come in $1000 less than the dealership and he also met the quoted price that he sent me prior to the maintenance. Additionally he was able to highlight that the water pump was more than likely leaking for a longer period of time because the timing belt was actually melted from the coolant. We were on borrowed time with it and this could have turned badly if we did not get this repaired promptly. Lastly, after taking to Tihomir, it's clear that he has a lot of experience with VW/ Audi (especially TDI). I highly recommend anyone with a VW or Audi to call him up for any service. P.S.: I also chose to follow his recommendation on a Unitronic Stage 1 flash, and it gave the car a noticeable difference in acceleration.
