The night before we left, I got a message that the inn is no longer available. Kate wouldn't return my calls, just sent an email. This is incredibly unprofessional, and I was left scrambling at the last minute to try and find housing for 14 people the night before our trip. I did find housing, 50 minutes away, which is the only reason I am leaving two stars instead of one. Very upset. I won't be trying to stay here again. Heed this warning if you want reliable housing.

The owner Mark was gracious and very helpful in planning our days. Clean showers, portable toilets, well kept campsites, and like minded campers were the highlights. It's important to know what to expect here though. This is a pack in/ pack out camp ground. No dumpsters or rubbishy disposal on site. Sites lack a fire ring of any sort or a picnic table. There is however a communal area with a propane grill, tables, umbrellas, and a large fire tank(?). Cooking of food can be cumbersome with several people using the grill at once. Sitting at the fire pit with strangers I bet would be nice if you happen to have outgoing neighbors. We were not fortunate in that department. All in all this is great low cost and clean option to be located in an amazing area of the country.

Just fantastic! But…read morewhat a loose, relaxed operation this is. I arrived to discover that they don't really have an office. They have a semi enclosed desk next to the manager's apartment. I bang on the door a couple times and a woman who I called half an hour ago answered in her extra short, little robe. It's freezing outside so the only reasonable place where I can fill out paperwork is in her apartment, So she invites me in. At this point I was looking around for cameras because it was starting to feel like the beginning of an goofy 80's movie. Attractive women do NOT answer their doors in slinky robes and invite ME inside!! I told the gal how strange I thought this was but it seemed pretty normal here. I put a name, an address and a phone number on a piece of paper, she doesn't even bother to ask for my ID. I pay $50 cash and she hands me the key. She shows me to my room, shows me the basement and the sauna and wishes me a good night. Says I'm welcome to look around and explore. I'm traveling alone but she put me in a room that could easily hold 5. Half the rooms have open doors. I wander up to the second floor and see that most of the doors are open up there too. The front door isn't locked, I could have walked in, found a room I liked, locked the door and called it a night. She would never have known. I'm convinced that carfulls of penniless ski bums do that all the time. Arrive at 11:00 or midnight. Tiptoe up to the second floor and crash for the night. Take a shower and get up and out early and the only person that might ever realize it would be the housekeeper. Crazy. The restrooms and showers are dorm style, down the hall. I couldn't get any wifi and there was no info about wifi in the room. Maybe they don't have it. Strangely, there also weren't any heater controls in the room but it stayed comfortably warm anyhow. The sauna works great. Don't think they serve food anymore. It was a fun, odd, loosey goosey place to stay for a business traveler.

On the plus side you can get a full diner any night for just $15 per person. I came here by motorcycle and they had a barn where I could put my bike at night which is a real plus. The downside of this spot for some motorcyclists is that the last couple of miles are on dirt roads. Jim and Nancy Rodgers are very friendly and I talked to quests who came back year after year as they couldn't find a better place then this for a quite week (or even 6 weeks for one couple) away. Other pluses are there is quite a bit to do in the area. Nice lakes nearby, about 30 minutes from St Johnsbury, and in the winter you can snowmobile right out of the yard and the VAST trail is right there.

One of the best evenings we have had in the past ten years. No question about it. Ranks with fine…read moredining big city restaurants. With the dismal and abominably warm winter New England has had in 2022-2023 ski season, we decided to go as far north as we could without crossing the border with Canada, so we lodged and had a superb weekend at Jay Peak, VT. In addition, one of my college classmates and Air Force career colleagues lives in nearby Montgomery Center, so he recommended the Black Lantern and it was one of the best recommendations ever. First of all, the history. Montgomery VT has the most covered bridges in a single town jurisdiction in the US. The area had a role to play in the War of Independence, when construction on the Bailey-Hazen Military Road to Hazen Notch began in 1777 as a way for the Continental Army to invade Quebec. Hazen's Notch Road begins a few blocks from the Black Lantern. The Inn was built in 1803 and remained as an Inn until it closed down in 2015. A group of concerned citizens bought the historic property, remodeled it, bought another building to expand the business, and reopened it in 2018. Its six rooms in the historic lodge and the four suites in the annex, allow for vacationers to stay in the historic town with close proximity to Jay Peak. But this review is for the dining. The truly fine dining offered here. We made reservations and they were honored on the spot, considering the restaurant was certainly busy. The beautiful, cozy and early American decor matched the ambiance and persona of the place. We got together with our friends and were seated in a wonderful location with privacy. The Black Lantern has joined into the farm to table movement and it shows in the amazing, fresh and abundant food available at the venue. Their beef and pork come from a local natural farm a few miles away. So does their lamb, coming from a local farmer. Their chicken is local. Their cheeses are from several Vermont producers including the ubiquitous Cabot Cheese, but also the Boucher Family Farm, the Jasper Hill Farm and the Vermont Creamery. Fresh vegetables come from nearby sources. The local and fresh sourcing of their food shows in the quality and taste of everything on the menu. And then there's their beers.... Local breweries and micros make an extensive part of their menu. Burlington's Fiddlehead, Zero Gravity and Queen City, St Alban's 14th Star beer, and Essex's First Republic. Their ciders are sourced from three locations in Vermont and even they carry wine from local producers. And their coffee is fair trade certified and roasted in town by Big Jay Roasters. The meal was impressive. We started the evening with Fried Yuca infused with truffle oil - succulent, and their Fried Brussel Sprouts that came encrusted with bacon, Gorgonzola and Parmesan cheeses. Crispy, tasty, superb. Then the salads for everyone. Fresh, crispy, beautiful. And it was time for main courses. I had their Chicken Curry stew which turned out delicious. Two of us had the lobster ravioli, made on the premises and as one of our group said, "heavy on the lobster" with not much filler. And then the steaks. About a pound and a half, perfectly seared with marbled pink inside. Truly amazing. Sadly, we had no room for dessert. With amazingly generous portions and two shared appetizers, we were stuffed. But what an evening. Service was impeccable.

Skiing at Jay's was an experience. The groomers were all…read morepretty rough, with barely any parts actually groomed. Did not enjoy any of them at all. The top half of the mountain was all just a tiny powder on top of ice . The ice gets shaved throughout the day to build up the powder that then gets slapped into something akin to moguls throughout the slopes. Talking to people on the lifts made it very clear that the focus of skiing here is on the glades and not the groomers. Unfortunately my lack of experience made it rather tough to enjoy that. It also wasn't until midday on our second day that we finally discovered some more beginner friendly glades. We ended up being able to enjoy the moons and the bushwacker path. The layout of the lodge is also strange. It feels cramped and crowded even though there werent too many people there. All the lifts feel far too slow as well. A wind cover at the least would be highly appreciated considering how long the ride up is. The misc Ramen truck is a highlight. Delicious lunch option. Truely a gift. Would recommend.

Overall, the terrain was a little more advanced but had a few short trails for beginners. Several long blue runs and a few groomed black runs in addition to many more difficult mogul black runs. Lots of glades areas if that is your cup of tea. The resort was big enough that you had plenty to explore for a few days and also if you went with a group it wasn't so huge that it was impossible to meet up or find friends if you took an accidental detour. We opted for a package and it was reasonable. We chose to stay at the golf cottages which were perfect for our group, and could get around the resort with their shuttle system. There was a movie theater, bowling alley, climbing wall, mini golf as well as general store, bars and restaurants on site. If you buy a package some of the activities might be included in your price. If you want to eat off site there are a few restaurants about 15 minutes away. It was nice that they had so many things to do because this resort is in a pretty remote area and there isn't a ton around in the near vicinity.
