My wife, two sons (20 yrs, 18 yrs), and I had a lovely stay in July 2026 in the Robert Frost cottage. The view from the lakeside cottage was stunningly beautiful and includes a private dock. We were able to stay with our miniature poodle in this unit. Lots of pluses. First, the central A/C worked really well. Second, the unit was clean and had a full kitchen so we could prepare our own dinner for two nights. Third, my older son loved using the kayak for fishing and caught a perch in the lake! Also, we appreciated that the staff called us in the morning to ask if we needed limited housekeeping services. With our dog in the unit, they granted our request to remove our full trash bag (which I left outside) and drop off extra towels. The only minuses are that it's a bit pricey and the interior space of the cottage is a bit cramped. But it was fantastic to enjoy a private dock and view of the lake. Overall, we would stay here again in the future - perhaps at a lakeview cottage up the hill! read more

This was our second time staying at the Willoughvale Inn, and it didn't disappoint! The staff were very accommodating and gracious, and of course, the location at Lake Willoughby is superb! A very relaxing way to celebrate our anniversary! The view from our Lupine Room was full-on lake and mountains, the bed was extremely comfortable with luxurious linens. Visiting gorgeous Lake Willoughby in Northern Vermont, we decided to eat dinner here at Gil's Bar and Grill. This Inn is set high overlooking the Lake. The clientele is upscale and our servers reflect that. Brittany and Cindy were super and very attentive. When in Vermont you have to order something with maple syrup, it's probably a given that we would order maple bourbon chicken, with its spiced apples, cheddar cheese and maple bourbon sauce... supreme $21. The bread was home baked. The beverages were mundane, but do get the tap water. Ample parking, reservations preferred. read more

We stayed in the Robert Frost cottage. Upon our check-in, we were told the restaurant was closed (due to labor shortage) which is a bummer but not unexpected in these times. Thankfully, we planned to cook our own meals and brought our own food. Upon entry, we discovered the refrigerator had been turned down so it was completely warm. I called the front desk and the innkeeper was apologetic. She did offer me a cooler with ice, but I turned thr fridge up to the coldest setting and put our food in the freezer to at least keep it cool but that was a juggling act so as not to freeze our food. The fridge did come to appropriate temperature eventually, but not something you want to deal with at the start of a vacation. The cottage had an unpleasant odor to it and the carpet was not appropriately vacuumed, as my toddler delightedly found crushed M&Ms all over (we were not delighted). The cottage is old and sparse - and not in the quaint way. Peeling paint outside, the water pressure is dismal and the shower stall is tiny. The kitchen isn't well stocked. For instance, I could not find oven mitts or potholders, no decent frying pan or cookware, and there was no hand soap at the kitchen sink. There was a sponge cut in half (???) to wash dishes and there was also a dishwasher that was very old and directly underneath the sink, which is plain awkward. The beds and pillows were old and uncomfortable. Something was banging against the house (we think it was a tree branch) that woke us every now and then. Another odd thing was there was no welcome binder or manual. And no umbrella for the table outside. We would have loved to eat outside but the sun was beating down. We could see the cottage next to us had one on their deck. The good: the central air worked well and kept the place cool. The view is amazing. The grill on the deck is newish... must have been recently replaced because an old broken one was leaned up against the cottage. In reading other reviews, it sounds like the Willoughvale has been in decline since the new ownership and the pandemic. It's quite disheartening. We are trying to be understanding in these times, but $395 a night for this was ridiculous. Will definitely come back to Lake Willoughby, but we won't be staying at the Willoughvale. read more

We spent two nights the Gazebo room. It was very tastefully decorated and the private gazebo (with private path entrance) is a nice luxury. The bed was comfortable. We were greeted by Deb when we arrived and she was exceptionally friendly. There are many rooms to choose from here and we've stayed in two. if you're going to make the trip all the way here I urge you to spring for the Gazebo room or a lakefront cottage. If the weather is not looking great cancel or you might find yourself either going stir crazy or increasing your progeny for there is not much to do in this area outside of hiking, boating, etc.. The restaurant is just OK. I had a burger that tasted like a dry hockey puck. However the chilean sea bass was lovely, the Switchback beer on tap is awesome, and the dessert was satisfying. There are only a few tables by the window so make a reservation. Some of the rooms are dog friendly!! read more

This Inn is wonderful in every way. It is located on the shores of Lake Willoughby in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The Inn itself is very comfortable; staff is friendly and accommodating. The lake, which was formed by glaciers, has crystal clear water and is surrounded by mountains. The Inn has a restaurant with seasonal offerings. The food is amazing and prepared by an actual chef. One of the best meals ever! Highly recommended and well worth the four hour trip from Boston. read more

I had a fantastic stay Halloween weekend! My room was nice and had an amazing view. I wasn't expecting the free, (very good- no matter what the other review says...), breakfast. That was a bonus. I was also very impressed with Ryan, the young woman who checked me in, gave me a tour, explained breakfast, showed me the kayaks, told me about "Willy", gave me directions, told me of nearby sights/hikes, and seemed to do pretty much everything! She was professional and sincere, (which you just don't see much any more), and really set the tone for a great get-away. I lived in Hawaii for 11 years. I found out that she lived on Maui for a short time. I think some Aloha Spirit really rubbed off on her. (She also talked me into staying there for dinner in their dining room next time...) I will be making this a yearly get-away! Room Tip: Gotta go with "Lake-View"!! Seriously. read more

They say "You get what you pay for...". But in this case we didn't. At least not for well/well north of $400/night for an eight night stay (including per diem pet surcharge). Why? Inn had no services to speak of. Bar and restaurant were closed. Nothing in lobby either besides check-in desk manned by a rather aloof/coolish 'less than sincerely friendly' lady and some brochures. No complimentary nothing. Cottage (Twilight) was nice, tidy, fresh/clean with all the modern amenities. No complaints there. Included washer/dryer and jacuzzi bath tub, plus Wifi and Sat TV. Two bedroom cottage along with two other identical ones (one to the left and one above us). Nice deck and grill...but with NO view of beautiful Lake Willoughby! Sure, this was NOT one of their 4 lakeside cottages. We knew that. But we were hoping at least for a nice unobstructed view of the lake...from anywhere in and around the cottage. Instead, we only got small slivers of view in between the heavy/tall vegetations and trees, bushes, etc. Disappointing. They need to update their webpage pixs!! How do you say "false advertising"? Probably explains why this off-lake cottage was only one allowing pets. Bottom-line, new ownership at Willoughby along with their 'condo/cottage association' (these were all rent backs) has a lot of work to do....especially at these price points. But he/they are trying(?). Previous own cash cowed the place quite a bit it seems. BTW, as an aside...I actually got 'busted' for allowing our dog to roam around untethered on their 'common area firepit, sports and dock grassy one nice early evening (even when NOBODY else was there) by same above 'friendly' person and her young 'back-up' enforcer girl. This...with no signs posted or rules stating that dogs must be on a leash at all times. Ours, BTW, also had a 'special training collar' on and was always in control. I take time/bytes to highlight this encounter as it pretty much sums up the stay and prevailing attitude/atmosphere there now...even for guests paying over $ 4,000 for their stay. -) How bout being a bit more guest friendly? Take our advice and check out vrbo.com instead. However, if you don't need a nice Lake view and are completely autonomous, independent and self-sufficient, the Cottage and privacy could work for you. But, at $ 395 per night base rate...? read more

Stayed this past weekend in the Conley cabin for my SOs bday. What a lovely property! The cabin far exceeded our expectations and the main inn building was gracious as well. The innkeeper Roy, was fantastic. He went out of his way to make sure our car was taken care of in the crazy snowstorm that hit while we were there and he hooked us up with some snoeshoes to use in the state forest down the road. Watching the people ice fish out on the lake from our cabin window was a great way to relax after treking through the beautiful Vermont woods. Seriously: the view alone is enough to rate this cabin 5 stars. The whirlpool tub, fireplace and snazzy kitchen put it over the top. And the offseason price is extremely reasonible for what you get. In the winter the roads can be a bit treacherous and there is not much in the way of easily excessible entertainment. But if you are looking for a great place to unwind and get in some outdoor recreation, this is a sure bet. I hope to try it out in the summer as well! read more

Really enjoyed our stay in the Lupine Room, king bed, pull out queen sofa for the kids and space for our dog. Jacuzzi tub was a great rainy day pool for the kids! Very friendly staff, great breakfast, amazing tips on local honking trails and moose viewings. Used their canoes for a paddle across the lake. Very peaceful, re-energizing stay with good dinner and better breakfast. read more

Stayed here this past August in the room directly behind the bar/dining room. The room was cute and had everything my bf and I needed. The only con to this particular room, however, was that you could hear the noise from the bar at night. The free breakfast was great! They have cereals, oatmeal, bagels and english muffins, scrambled eggs, and coffee and hot chocolate with juices as well set out. Just go in, grab a plate, and help yourself. We also took advantage of the complimentary s'mores across the road by the lake. There is a shed with all the s'mores supplies and you can roast your marshmallows in the firepit. You can also take their kayaks and canoes out on the lake free of charge. We had a pleasant stay and would definitely stay again. read more

Stayed here over the winter in March 2015 because the packages were cheaper then! We got a romance package and stayed in the Governor Aiken Room. Came with champagne, chocolates, and the room had a fireplace and jacuzzi tub! Soooo nice after a long day of skiing Jay Peak in 6 degree weather! We arrived for check-in after the front desk was closed but it was very easy to get settled in on our own. Breakfast is continental and not great, but it'll do. There is a game room, living area with books, movies, and fireplace. There is a restaurant there but was closed during our stay. There were a few other guests staying there but didn't see or hear them really! Very quiet. This place is absolutely adorable and we would absolutely visit again next winter! read more

Very disappointed. Nice spot with so much potential. Unfortunately, though, there is so little effort in making guests feel welcomed and catered to. Non-operating restaurant and bar, so you would think that the hosts would do something to make up for this--like fresh perked coffee and bagels--or even a front patio that offers comfortable chairs to allow guests to view the nice lake vista. No. There's a Keurig pot in your room, and the owner has removed chairs around the tables on the patio overlooking the lake. I guess you can "perk" your Keiron brew and walk out to stand in the front yard. Of course, walking by the front desk, don't expect a ""Hellio," "Good Morning," or ""How is your stay?" Furthermore, if you have a concern or request, expect that no one cares. We have traveled extensively and have also served in many customer service capacities over the years. We know quality when we see it. Don't expect quality customer service or perks here...a bit of a sham. read more

I had never been to this area of Vermont before but I was really struck by the beauty of the area. The Inn had absolutely incredible views of lake Willoughby. The cottages are on the other side of the road but all of them looked like they still had good views of the lake. My room was very clean and everything was nicely laid out. The bed was incredibly comfortable. In the morning there was a standard continental breakfast with very friendly conversation with the owners. The only thing to be aware of is that there's not a lot of restaurants/ stores in the area so you may want to plan ahead. Especially in the winter months (which are absolutely beautiful!). read more

I went here for a romantic weekend with my boyfriend. We stayed at the Birches cottage. It's a perfect size for at least 4+ people. The kitchen had everything you needed, so you didn't need any pots, pans, etc. The bedrooms are nice and the bathroom is rather large. There's also a gas fireplace, which is warm enough to heat the whole cottage. At the main lodge, they have board games, DVD's for rental and tea and cookies from 4-5pm everyday. We didn't check out the continental breakfast because it was from 8-10am, I believe, but I'm pretty sure it was fabulous. The cottage was right on the lake. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't agreeing with us that weekend. It was like a monsoon, but I can imagine what the views would have been if it was nice out. You're able to rent kayaks and canoes free of charge. I can't wait to come back next time, but we will definitely come in the late spring/early summer so that the weather will be in agreement! read more

I enjoyed a recent stay at the Willoughvale Inn. We stayed in the main house overlooking the lake. Really nice views, even when the weather was gloomy. Our room (the Westmore) was clean and well-kept, even though it's a little plain. We were comfortable there. My only con about the room was that that the housekeeping staff failed to replenish toiletries like shampoo and soap beyond what was in the room when we arrived. I finally had to ask for more (after three full days!) and we bought our own bar of soap to make sure we had it when needed. It was a strange omission day after day. The continental breakfast was fine: scrambled eggs, toast, bagels, juice, coffee, tea, whole fruit. However, we found that unless we arrived downstairs by around 8:30 a.m., there might be little eggs left, or fruit or toast. There didn't appear to be much attention paid to replenishing the food for later-arriving guests. If there were one suggestion I'd make, it would be that. On our first morning we actually took rather less than we otherwise would have, to make sure there was at least something left for others. We had dinner at the restaurant two nights. The food was quite good, including plank-grilled salmon, and the spinach and artichoke dip. I've had better table service--our server gave me the impression he thought he was doing us a favor by waiting on our table--but overall we enjoyed our meals. The front desk staff was great. Theresa especially was really helpful and a lot of fun to chat with, even though we were flatlanders and from the Left Coast to boot. Even with the two small cons I've mentioned, they're easily correctable and I'd stay here again with pleasure. read more

We have stayed at the Inn (vs a cabin) 3 times over the last 6 years. This last experience was horrid. The new owner and employees are rude and insulting. We had our room serviced only 1 of 4 nights, plus one day linen was left in a bag hung on our door. Customer service is to say the least poor, A woman from a cabin came in to get a bandaid for her young son and the owner was condescending to her. We stayed in the Courtyard room and the old spring bed was most uncomfortable and when asked if we could switch rooms, only option was to stay upstairs due to the new owner taking the the other 2 rooms. The bed slopes to the middle (so hope if someone is sleeping with you, you like to be close), They did bring us an old memory foam topper. You no longer get anything for breakfast other than a Keurig with powdered creamer in your room and there is no area you can microwave or eat (the glassed in porch area was full of paperwork littering the table and you cannot access the dining seating). We sat on the porch one evening and felt like we were intruding on the staff person doing yardwork. If we had not paid for all the nights, we would have gone elsewhere. We felt very unwelcome there. I grew up in this area and have had several family and friends stay here. So sad to see this Inn go downhill. read more

It's a lovely inn, exceptionally clean and well kept with very pleasant staff. I would have given it 5 stars but for two things that marred my experience. I was staying in the Courtyard Room which has a back door leading to the back parking area. At precisely 7:53 am, while I was still sleeping, some creep came to that back door, managed to unlock the deadbolt I had thrown and was attempting to gain entry into the room. Thankfully he was unable to do so due to the lock on the doorknob. Perhaps he was just an inn guest who thought it was a back entrance to the building but if that is the case, I'm surprised this type of thing doesn't happen more often. There should be a sign at this back door stating something like "not an entrance" or "private room" to deter others. I discovered too late that there was also a hook and eye on the screen door which I would have also deployed if I had realized it was there. At that point, I was fully alert and awake and decided to make coffee with the complementary Keurig that is in the room. That brings me to my next problem....there were no mugs/cups to be found anywhere in the room, only the flimsy plastic water glasses. Since I was in my PJ's, having just been rudely woken up/scared, I was in no mood to call the front desk or tiptoe into the breakfast room to grab a mug, so coffee was going to have to wait a while. I'd like to return someday but perhaps not stay in that particular room again. read more

I don't even know where to start! Thank you, Skip and Cindy, for the best inn experience I've ever had! I arrived last night at a few minutes after 8:00pm. I checked in with Cindy at the front desk and she said to bring everything in and she'd show me to my room. I'm thinking, "Wow, the customer gets a lot of attention here." I got my stuff and the other innkeeper, Skip, led me to my room and asked if I needed anything. I asked if their on-site restaurant was open and unfortunately it had just closed. Turns out there are no restaurants or cafés or Dunkin Donuts or anything within over a half hour that are open past 8:00pm. (So heads up to whoever goes out here. You really are in the middle of the wilderness. Bad on me for assuming there'd be places around.) I'd also be leaving crazy early in the morning so wouldn't be able to do breakfast with them. So, right away, he was like, "What time do you have to leave? At least let me bring you breakfast here now and you can keep it in the fridge so you'll have something to eat." I'm like, "Um, OK. Thanks. But don't go out of your way." He's like, "No problem at all!" and came back with a big bowl of granola, a cup of milk, yogurt, and an orange. Then he said, "We can still make something for you now if you're hungry." I was like, "Oh, no. Don't go crazy." The chef was walking by, just about to leave from his shift, and he said, "The fryer is still warm. I can fire it up again and whip something up for you." Seriously? This whole conversation is going on in the hallway outside my room. I swear, I have this whole inn staff at my service. Without another word, the chef went back to the kitchen. Skip and Cindy offered for me to come and sit in the restaurant and eat while they worked cleaning things up for the night. I sat down and Cindy brought me a large plate of chicken, potatoes, and green beans and we enjoyed some good conversation. I ate quickly so I wouldn't keep them longer than they needed to be there. So I was completely blown away at how much everyone at this place went unrealistically above and beyond to make me feel welcome. I felt like royalty or something. Aside from all that, the place is also beautiful and clean. The room was perfect. Bathroom and shower are huge. I guess this inn has a ton more to offer, but unfortunately I wasn't able to stay long. Checked in at 8pm and left at 8am the next morning. But I can't wait to come back. Oh, and it's very affordable. Just know that everything shuts down in this little town at 8:00pm. They told me there that whenever anyone makes a reservation with them, they make sure to tell them this, but I booked through Orbitz and they said that a lot of these travel sites don't note this to their customers. The Willoughvale Inn used to be our go to spot when we visited Lake Willoughby. Unfortunately the food has taken a turn for the worse. We decided to give it another try and called around one for reservations at 6:30. We asked to be called to confirm the reservations so that we knew we had a place to eat. When we hadn't heard by 5:30 we called the restaurant back. The person who answered the phone said we're full (it's nice to be the only restaurant on the lake). We told her we had called much earlier and it would have been nice to receive a call back. "Well we're full. Sorry about that" And that was that. I don't think I will give them another try. read more

I am disappointed with the Willoughvale, but not for ordinary reasons. I received a gift certificate in 2011 for $250. My family and I went to the restaurant one evening, and we were fortunate enough to be able to get a seat. The meal was great. However, my life is very busy, and the Willoughvale is located quite far from me. After several months of not having time to return, I phoned the Green Mountain Inn (a sister inn) to inquire if I could transfer my gift certificate to that Inn. I called a couple of times with this request, and received no response or call-back. The other times I tried to return to the restaurant in Westmore, it was not open. By the time I had the time to rent a cabin, the gift certificate had expired, and I was out $185. Again, very disappointed, to say the least. read more

We stayed at the lodge in a lake view queen bed room. Beautiful little room with a great view. Has a empty frig you can use and a safe for no additional charge. There was a shower in our room, others do have bath tubs if that is what you prefer I think. The screen TV on the wall was a nice touch. Free wifi and a light breakfast is included. The game room down stairs was fun, pool table, ping pong ball and air hockey, we played all 3 and laughed the whole time. There are also DVDs you can rent for your room. They have fine dining and a bar with a large screen TV on the main floor. This was the cleanest, sweetest most beautiful little Inn we could have found for our one night stay on the way to Boston. You could tell the owners pay a lot of attention to detail. If we're out this way again I think we'll rent one of their cottages on the lake, I can only imagine the view. The willoughvale inn is a great little inn. Very quaint and homey. I arrived Saturday night (technically Sunday morning) around 3am. I had called earlier in the day to let them know I would be arriving super late and whoever I spoke to on the phone was incredibly helpful and walked me thru how to check in late. Super easy. Sunday morning my boyfriend woke up and went to jay peak to snowboard while I stayed back at the hotel and hung out because I wasn't feeling well. The complimentary breakfast was great! When my boyfriend got back we decided to explore the inn since there wasn't many people there. We found a coffee pot in the library that had hot chocolate but only 1 packet left. We decided to try to find more. We called whoever is left in charge on Sunday nights to try to ask for some more. They kind of had an attitude about it and said there was none left and hung up on us as if we were an annoyance. That was the only bad thing I have to say about my stay. The next day there was packets during breakfast, which bothered me a bit because the person working Sunday night so obviously had no interested in doing so. Overall, I would definitely stay here again, but I hope the woman working overnight isn't there again! read more
