Ten years ago, Dr. Kwong performed a miracle on my right foot & ankle! Having been told by another Dr. that I needed my ankle fused, I needed another opinion. Dr. Kwong ordered what seemed like a lot of X-Rays but am I glad that he did! He was able to show me the problems from every angle possible in my ankle! I was in a cast for three months & a knee scooter for another two months. NO load or weight was to be put on my foot! All of this was done as an out patient surgery! Fast forward ten years & I'm pain free & have full range of motion in my foot & ankle! I can walk as far as I want pain free! Dr. Kwong is a great doctor! I broke my ankle at the beginning of Summer and went to see a different doctor who told me that I HAD to have surgery otherwise I would have massive problems with my ankle. I went to Kerlan and Jobe to get a second opinion and Dr. Kwong said he didn't think I needed surgery, put me in a cast for seven weeks, and sent me to physical therapy for another six. Now I'm five months out and almost as good as new. Dr. Kwong is a bit quiet, but he is analytical and puts patient care first. On top of that, the guy that does casting here is sweet, comforting, and very helpful. Overall, it was the best experience one could have while dealing with a broken ankle. read more

This man right here. Over the last three years, Dr. Kwong has literally changed the trajectory of my life and improved the quality of it beyond measure. I had severe genetic deformities in my feet-- my left foot was really bad after a botched surgery by a doctor in my hometown-- and Dr. Kwong has diagnosed and corrected each one of them. After surgery number 6, I can finally walk NORMALLY (I do not remember a time before this year in which I had any semblance of normalcy). I don't feel my feet collapsing with each step or my knees turning inward. I can do things I was never able to do before and can go back to doing the ones that I love. Most importantly, I don't hurt. And honestly, relax, people. A good surgeon's job is to help fix his patients' physical problems, not make you feel warm and fuzzy. Dr. Kwong saved my life! I'm so grateful for the lateral ligament surgery he did for me. I had been spraining my ankle basically every other year from when I was 12 years old! I enjoy running, dancing, hiking and it became a problem when I just rolled my ankle for no reason...I could just be walking and bam! It was devastating for me and the boots just got bigger and bigger. When I found Dr. Kwong he told me my ankle ligaments had been severely stretched. I desperately needed surgery and therapy afterwards to learn how to use my ankle again. I was so nervous! But he explained he would be using artificial tape and dissolvable screws and my ankle would be like new. I knew Dr. Kwong serviced real athletes and that he was the best. I am back to doing everything I did before and I'm so grateful to my friend who recommended him. His staff is also top notch. I will suggest that you make sure you can get your insurance approval on both ends before surgery. The insurance company swore they did not get an approval for this necessary treatment and I had to leave on my original surgery day and return five days later. read more

The story the other reviewer told about Dr. Kwong is very surprising to me because I've had exactly the opposite experience. I came to Kwong (and Kerlan-Jobe) after some very bad treatment by UCLA Orthopedic. I had suspected torn ligaments and five weeks later, there was no improvement and the UCLA doc diagnosed me with a scary (and permanent) nerve condition - so I made an appointment with Dr. Kwong for a second opinion. I will grant you Kwong wasn't the friendliest guy the first time around, but he was perfectly polite. He was EXTREMELY thorough and my first exam took two-and-a-half hours. He spent 25 minutes just poking, prodding, and moving my injured foot to figure out the problem areas, then said I needed an MRI immediately because he needed to know "how many tears" there were. As for that nerve condition, Kwong instantly shook his head and said, "no way." In fact, he seemed pretty appalled by the treatment I'd gotten from UCLA, though I appreciated that he didn't bad-mouth them and just moved on to what needed to be done. From the moment I walked into Kwong's office, my ankle improved by leaps and bounds. And I found he grew more amiable with familiarity. Dr. Kwong is amazing. He is brilliant and takes a LOT of time explaining the intended procedure. He answers all questions completely. I had an extensive foot repair at White Memorial CS. It was 5 hours of anesthesia. Dr Quong sat with my very loving husband after my surgery and explained everything and reassured him as well. I'm recuperating, as my surgery was on 3/12. Dr. Kwong is my hero! Thanks to Dr. Kwong, I am fully walking only 12 weeks after a severe injury (broken heel that affected the subtalar joint). Before meeting Dr. Kwong, I had been told by another orthopedic surgeon that I would likely need high-risk surgery. Dr. Kwong thought I would be much better off avoiding surgery -- and thanks to his expert recommendation of a hard cast for 6 weeks and a total of 10 weeks off my foot, I now have full mobility. It's scary to think that another orthopedic surgeon would have quickly and unnecessarily cut into my foot. Dr. Kwong was focused on my recovery every step of the way, with weekly visits to check on my progress... during which he always entered the room smiling. It was clear that Dr. Kwong looks out for the best interest of his patients, explaining medical issues clearly and in layman's language. He is professional and passionate -- and is a breath of fresh air from the stereotypical arrogant orthopedic surgeon. This guy is a great at what he does. He can watch your mechanics walking across the room and figure out what other Drs miss and surgically repair it if needed. My daughter had both feet reconstructed by DR.Kwong after being misdiagnosed by multiple other Drs and he was spot on and she's had no further issues since the surgeries after years of problems Don't go to this office expecting to get in and out of there,you'll be there awhile but it's worth it. Dr Kwong is very focused during the exams,so don't expect warm and fuzzy. He's nice but he's there to figure out or treat your issue ,not hold your hand. read more

AWFUL EXPERIENCE!!!! DO NOT TRUST Dr Phillip Kwong !! I had an ankle injury and went to Dr Phillip Kwong and he stated that I needed surgery to fix the torn tendon. He stated that my anklebone is flat and also most of my pain is coming from my nerve and he needs to fix them. Right when he came out of the surgery room, he told me that my tendon was only off track and it was not torn. During recovery, he continued to ignore what I said about pain, refusing to order another MRI, and 5 months after surgery, I had to beg him for another MRI. Finally, he ordered the 2nd MRI and told me that I have a torn tendon. NOT only did he perform surgery on my nerve and my anklebone that didn't NEED the surgery, BUT he misdiagnosed me TOTALLY-missed the tendon issue and I am having to have surgery done AGAIN. I am 11 months post-surgery and I'm unable to walk without severe pain, exercise, stand for more than 10 minutes or wear normal shoes. Subsequent visits with other ankle orthopedics have unanimously shown that errors were made in the surgery. In addition, after 11 months, my ankle is still numb because he operated on my nerve without a nerve conduction study and my bone is sticking out. I've been walking around in flip flops for 11 months because I can't wear normal shoes and this has affected my career and left me embarrassed daily at work. I went to other doctors to see if they can help me and all of them stated that they can't fix my bone and I may not get sensation back in my ankle at all. I am currently in more pain than before the surgery and will likely need another operation to repair my tendon. Dr. Kwong's lack of knowledge and/or skills has cost me a lot of time, money and severely diminished my quality of life. I fear this is a problem I will have for life and felt the need to write this in hopes that he doesn't do this to another patient. read more

Dr. Kwong took excellent care of my broken foot years ago. In the past two years he has seen my son for repeated broken foot bones and other injuries. Last summer Dr. Kwong took extra special care of my son due to a Jone's fracture. He was cautious to preform surgery on such a young teen (13/14) and knew how rough my son is, so he had extra thick casts put on him every two weeks, insisted on him using a scooter (non weight bearing) and even got our insurance company to provide a bone stimulator. It took months to completely heal on its own...but it did! I trust any surgeon who prefers surgery to be the last resort. Dr. Kwong, his super awesome assistant Bill and Alfonso, the AMAZING cast specialist always have a smile on their faces when they see us coming (which, due to trick scootering, we do all too often). Some days it takes two hours to get to their office, but I wouldn't trust my son's body to anyone else. Thank you Kerlan-Jobe for taking all insurances and hiring the best of the best!! HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! WRONG DIAGNOSIS! I was so appalled at the dismissive way I was treated. He has no personality and no empathy! I injured my foot in a ballet class and was unable to put any weight on it for the two days before my appointment. He never asked me how I hurt my foot! He just looked at x-rays my family physician took and told me I had arthritis and needed orthotic inserts for my shoes and physical therapy. He hustled me off to another room to see the orthotics fitter, who wanted $300 up front because he won't bill insurance. I became hysterical, because I could not walk at all. The orthotic fitter went to Dr. Kwong and asked him to reconsider.the diagnosis. I was put in a moon boot, given crutches, and told to schedule an MRI downstairs. Dr. Kwong came back in and said "I hope you can get over this, because if you don't, I will have to fuse your joint!" I left and scheduled an MRI at another facility. It turns out I had STRESS FRACTURES OF THE 2ND AND 3RD METATARSALS! He should be ashamed of himself!
