I am less than 1wk postop w/ Dr Lanman. I had a 7 level disc replacement (4 cervical, 3 Lumbar) Clearly still healing but I'm already experiencing mobility and leg strength that I haven't had in years. I want to emphasize "I was on my way to LOSING THE ABILITY TO WALK ". I walked over an hour combined on Saturday after a Tuesday morning surgery. Bilateral neck and shoulder pain and weakness already 90% better. We traveled from LAX to Seattle yesterday - now 10 days out from surgery. I had wheelchairs scheduled to help me. I used the one at LAX out of force of habit. By the time we got to Seattle, I said to my wife "I'm not using that wheelchair, I want to walk". I walked for a half an hour, stopped at Starbucks to get her a coffee, our luggage was 45 minutes late. I was on my feet for well over an hour - zero pain. I had my three week postop visit with Dr. Lanman on Monday, he gave me the green light to start riding the Peloton bike. I've ridden every day for the last four days, no pain, starting to regain further leg strength. I haven't been able to walk barefoot in 20 years without significant pain. I walk everywhere barefoot now. In three weeks I've been cleared to start mountain biking again!!! I can walk up flights of stairs without having to pull myself up using the railing. We had five people over for dinner a few nights ago, I was on my feet for 2 1/2 hours cooking completely pain-free. I got to spend the entire Easter church service standing pain-free. These may sound like little things, but they're absolutely life-changing to me. I don't know how to say this anymore emphatically - if you are experiencing back and neck pain PLEASE reach out to Dr. Lanman for a consultation. He's compassionate, thoughtful, and knows as much about preserving spinal function as anyone. So much of our overall health is predicated on motion/activity. I'm 59 and I love being active, truthfully, I was dreading aging because I was in such horrible chronic pain. Now I'm looking forward to growing older, seeing my son get married and who knows maybe being a grandparent one day. I don't know if Dr. Lanman is the finest spine surgeon in the world, but in my opinion I would say there isn't anyone better! I know this is a long review, but I'm so grateful - I'll wrap up by saying the two other surgeons I spoke to wanted to fuse my cervical spine and make no repairs to my lumbar spine. I'm a person of deep faith, I was despondent at my prospects. I asked God for guidance and during that time that's when I found Dr. Lanman. My insurance paid for part of my surgery, because of the way insurance companies operate I paid for the additional portion. It was so worth it!! I told Dr. Lanman 10 out of 10 times - I would do it again. His staff is terrific too! I'm here looking for orthopedic surgeons for my girlfriend who needs her shoulder looked at, and I run across spine surgeons. That jarred my memory... Dr. Todd Lanman is my go-to for all things spine. I hadn't seen him in years, because he does amazing work of course! So this prompted me to type a well deserved review. I've had two spine surgeries with Todd. The first was my neck and it couldn't have gone better. Recovery was quick. Todd's bedside manner was on point and I appreciate his follow ups and recovery process. The second surgery was evasive involving my lower spine and tailbone and, I chose the double whammy, my neck as well. Recovery was tough and long, but under the care of Todd and several years later, not only did he stop the pain, he gave me my life back. I've had back pain since I was in my early 20's , a yr 1/2 ago I started having tailbone pain no trama ? I had an MRI & CT done that Dr. Lamman recommended to see what was going on , apparently nothing showed up on the CT or x-rays or MRI at the tailbone area? but we did discover that I needed to have a disc replacement on my lower back , something I Never knew I needed ? I guess I just learned to live with pain mostly all my adult life ? We both decided that we should remove the tailbone the same time he did the disk replacement surgery , I'm so glad we did My tailbone was broken. I'm so grateful he did both procedures at the same time , today is one month after my surgery and I feel great. I am still healing. Need to do PT take it easy for a bit lonbut I have no more pain, also he does his surgeries out of Cedar Sinai it was an outstanding hospital experience . This review is far overdue and life-saving. In 2022, I was experiencing the most excruciating pain and discomfort of my life. I had lost my grip in my left hand, felt dizzy, and had little sensation in my hand/ arm. I was unable to feel my fingers, and I was pretty much told that I was one trip and fall away from being paralyzed because of the way my discs (c4/5 and 5/6) were bulging onto my spine. At the time, I was a Kaiser patient, and all of the neurosurgeons there had advised me that I had to have a fusion surgery. It took them four months to determine this, and I was horrified, to say the least. I had gone in and out of doctor appointments unaware of any of the medical terms being used, scared, in discomfort, in pain, and terrified. I didn't feel content with the information I was given, at least not with the technology we have in medicine today. I began to do my research online, trying to find patients experiencing the same symptoms that I had been experiencing. I came across some YouTube videos of patients who had gone through the same or similar experiences that I had been experiencing and had gone through with cervical surgeries. They talked about the process, what they experienced, and how some of them wished they had known about ADR (artificial disc replacement); this took me down another rabbit hole, for which I am so grateful. I didn't know if I would qualify for any of the clinical trials because of my current condition and what I had been told from Kaiser, so I rolled the dice. I booked an appointment with his office because I needed peace of mind and a second opinion on what was going on with me and I needed to know my options. I'm so grateful that I did. I booked my appointment and went over everything with him; he saw all of my imaging, MRIs, CAT scans, and x-rays, and he told me that I did qualify to have the surgery and that I could 100% be one of his patients could participate. So, 14 days later, I was in the operating room and having the procedure that I needed to have done. 2-level cervical ADR. I'm writing this review two years later with the most gratitude a person could ever have. Not only do I have full function in my arm and hand. I have 5 years experience as a Interventional Pain Doctor treating patients with complex spine disorders and pain. I am currently 3 months post op after having a 4 level cervical artificial disc replacement with Dr Lanman. Dr Lanman saved my life! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. As a classically trained violinist with multilevel cervical disc disease, I have had horrible neck pain for over 25 years. I am a 37 year old spine doctor now, and when I saw my neck MRI for the first time, the structural issues were so bad that I knew a surgical approach was the only way I'd see relief. As a pain management doctor who has seen many examples of surgical failures, I was very apprehensive about having spine surgery. Preop, I had 4 degenerated discs from C3-7 , and significant structural malalignment of my cervical spine. Dr Lanman not only was able to replace my discs, but he was able to correct my alignment issues. As someone who reads x rays very well and has spent time working alongside spine surgeons for years, I can tell you that Dr Lanmans attention to detail and ability to solve complex structural problems with artificial discs is on a different level than anybody's work I've ever seen. Update 10/19: Since Lanman's office wants to claim that I don't exist and am making false claims I figured an update is worthwhile. Funny how they take reviews seriously and respond to them, but not phone calls and messages. Blair and Sara are the only good people there. Everyone else is dishonest, including Lanman. Lanman is past his prime and needs to retire. While at my a follow up last week in LA with Rasouli, I met a man seeking opinions for his cervical issues post recent surgery. Muhammad I believe his name was. He has the same experience I have had. Guess who his surgeon was.....Lanman. Eitherway, Dr. Rasouli helped me after Lanman wrecked me. I really don't know where to begin. so let's start at the beginning. From the moment I met Dr Lanman, I was very impressed with his knowledge, understanding of a nervous patient, me, and his wonderful bedside manner. He put me at ease immediately and I knew I was in the best hands of any doctor I know. He explained in layman terms what I was in for, and although it was quite an intensive surgery, I felt comfortable. It takes a lot for me to relax but he accomplished that with me. Dr. Lanman is the best. I am an athletic 63-year-old man that played allot of aggressive contact and combat sports in my younger years. I came to Dr. Lanman in September 2025 with severe nerve compression in my C5-C6 and C-6-C7 nerve roots due to a combination of cervical disc age and sports related degeneration and an aggressive cervical chiropractor adjustment in May 2025 that trigged nerve pain symptoms. My right arm was numb; I had searing pain emanating from my neck down my right arm...and muscle atrophy in my right arm had commenced. A nerve conduction study showed serious nerve signal impairment. I tried PT over a 4-month period and had 2 epidurals. Nothing helped. Dr. Lanman studied my images and concluded that I needed 2 artificial discs at C5-C6 and C-6-C7. His goal was to solve the nerve compression issue before the damage became perinate ... and give me back normal neck mobility. I woke up from surgery on Sept 30, and the nerve pain was gone. I had prodisc ADR at C4-C5 with Todd Lanman in 2024. At first it caused no concernable pain but I noticed it was crooked immediately after surgery. In lass than a year, I have had to recieve surgery by another surgeon to fix what Lanman did to me. At first Todd Lanman told me that the disc subsided but come to find out it was just implanted wrong and Lanman lied to me the entire time. After a huge decrease in quality of life and massive increase in pain 7 months after surgery I had the disc replaced by another surgeon. I cannot recommend Lanman as a doctor to anyone under any circumstance. Please do you self a favor and use a different surgeon that is honest. read more

12/10/24 I was fortunate to have Dr. Lanman and his team fix my cervical spine. A two level ADR. From the beginning with Blair, Arlene and Andrea, his team was super supportive, very timely with communication and made my experience seamless. I was able to zoom with Dr. Lanman twice and his demeanor, insight and confidence put myself and my wife at ease. We also met with him the day before surgery and he was just as great in person. He walked us through the procedure, what we could expect before and after and offered a supportive consultation. He wasn't arrogant, nor timid. On the day of the procedure. the check in was easy, he stopped by before the surgery, reassured me of everything and then it was go time! I was back in the hotel by 2:30 that afternoon. After one night of mild discomfort, I was off the pain meds by the next day. When we met him on Monday, he was once again, affable and gave us all the information on the procedure. He was confident the operation was a success, as am I. My neck pain is completely gone (no longer the stabbing when I turn my head) and time will help heal the ligaments / nerve stretch. I've had severe nerve / arm pain for 4 years, so I'm pretty sure it will take awhile. I can't thank Todd and his team enough for the great care they provided me. I had a two level lumbar ADR done in Germany last year but I now wish I would have used Todd. I am writing again after 2 years because I suffered for 20 years before I found Dr Lanman. Since my surgery on December 21st 2021, I had trouble walking, and almost any activity caused me pain for many days and nights. Sleep was never restful, and I was in constant pain, with tingling, numbness and constant muscle spasms!! I am now working with horses again! I volunteer for a local equine therapy program, grooming the horses and look forward to training them in ground work! My life is so much better, more comfortable and pain free! Words cannot begin to describe how grateful I am to have been referred to Dr. Lanman. I am a 31 year old male that played sports my whole life, primarily basketball and soccer, so when I had my first set of back issues when I was 21 years old it came as shock to my family. I had my first back surgery which was a microdisectomy on my L5-S1 disc at 21 and it seemingly went well, I resumed an active lifestyle for the better part of 10 years until March of 2021 when I fell awkwardly snowboarding. I was scared to figure out what had transpired in the last 10 years and the idea of a second surgery was something I really didn't want to entertain, after wasting months and further injuring myself getting bad advice from local chiropractors and other specialists, I finally got a new MRI and started interviewing well respected neurosurgeons all across LA with my dad. The MRI revealed that my bottom two discs were shot. My bottom one I had surgery on 10 years ago was collapsed and basically bone on bone, and I had a severe herniated on the L4-L5 disc above it. I was very scared about what to do going forward, and the scarier part was I could not get a consensus from the well respected surgeons I met with. Some recommended a fusion on the bottom level, some recommended not doing anything to the bottom level, and some said replace both with an artificial disc which I didn't know much about and sounded scary. I was confused, and not feeling super confident with any of the surgeons I interviewed. After about my 6th interview my dads friend who just underwent a disc replacement on his neck recommended I see Dr Lanman. Reluctantly, I did, and he made me get additional imaging which no other surgeons asked for prior to my visit. My dad and I met with Dr Lanman in early 2022 and the biggest thing that set him apart was by the time I came into my appointment, he had all of my imaging pulled up, had already reviewed it and was so thorough and confident in his assessment. I needed a two level disc replacement and that I was a perfect candidate for it based off my imaging. He had measured the angles of my pelvis and vertebrae, explained why he would use a prodisc vs other artificial discs that had a higher probability of slipping out (and one of the other surgeons recommended this one to me, scary). We both walked out of there without a doubt in our mind that he was lightyears more impressive than all the other skilled surgeons we met with and I felt hopeful for the first time in a long time. I had my surgery June 14th at Cedars and it went about as well as it could have. The first couple of weeks were rough as expected, but I was surprisingly mobile within 24 hours albeit with a back brace, but around 3-4 weeks in my pain subsided dramatically and I was virtually pain free. I saw Dr Lanman for all of my post operative appointments and he was always on time, attentive and very confident in his advice. Something about his demeanor he was so calm as he does this before, I trusted that he could fix me. At 31 years old, recently engaged and hoping to have a family in the coming years, I was living a fraction of the life I should have been with constant debilitating back pain. I had my 3 month follow up appointment today and am so grateful to say I have been pain free for months, I can do basic things like sit at my desk or drive my car, carry groceries without nagging pain. I was so scared for years I was scared and he gave me hope, a new lease on life. I wish I would have found Dr Lanman sooner. His staff is so polite, helpful and responsive. i was in tough shape I had back lumbar surgery 1 year before and instent relief eight months and then I started in pain both arms were numb. Both hands were numb. Left thigh was numb. I wasn't going to write my review until my 3 month healing time was finished, however, I decided there was information I should share with potential patients of Dr. Lanman. My name is Dimitra, I am 24 years old, and I had a spinal surgery done with Dr. Lanman on July 23, 2024. My story: back in March of 2020, I had a horse back riding accident. I had burst fractured my L4 and received an emergency surgery which consisted of a spinal fusion from my L3-L5. The four years following my initial surgery were rough. I was in constant pain. I couldn't bend over to sit properly, couldn't lay down without pain, and there were 5 different types of pain that I would feel almost daily. To avoid making this story too long, I will spare the details of the 5 different pain types. Because I was in all of this constant pain, I went to different doctors to get opinions on what might be wrong. Every single one of them returned to me saying that "This pain is just part of having this surgery and I need to deal with it". I felt like I was crazy. The amount of pain I was in was borderline unbearable. But Doctors are always right...right? So, I set out to become the most healthy and fit version of myself. I started exercising 6 times a week. My workouts consisted of weightlifting, boxing, and conditioning. My hard work paid off. I couldn't have been more physically fit. There was just one problem, my 5 types of severe pain still persisted; and I was still being told that was normal. Fast forward to march 2024. I fell and instantly knew something was wrong. I went and got x-rays to find that my bottom two screws were broken. This time around, I was able to pick my surgeon. So, I set out to find the best one. Most that I spoke to told me to do nothing. The idea of not having a surgery sounded appealing but what would this broken metal do in my back over time? And the 5 pain types? Thankfully, my research paid off and we found Dr. Lanman. I sent him my scans and prayed that he would take me as a patient. Luckily for me, he did. Our first video call was all I needed to experience to know that I was going to choose him and here's why: from the get-go, Dr Lanman was kind. But even more I knew that he looked at each one of my images intensely. How do I know this? I received a two level lumbar disc replacement from Dr. Lanman. I saw two other top neurosurgeons who specialize in disc replacement, but Dr Lanman's attention to detail was superior, and his 360 degree thinking and approach produced a plan that - so far - has set me up for a quality of life I've been in search of for over 25 years. In vetting him, the doctor who performed some of the first disc replacement surgeries in the US and a personal family friend, told me that he knew Dr. Lanman well, and there was nobody better out there. Part of the surgery includes a vascular surgeon, and when I pushed the vascular surgeon - one of the best in the country by all indications - for his honest assessment of Dr Lanman - he took the time to take me through the challenges of the procedure and why Dr Lanman is the best out there. He couldn't have been more genuine. He cited Dr Lanman's insistence on perfection - explaining some of the little details of the procedure that others may get wrong - which Dr Lanman would never allow to happen. It did not sound disingenuous when he said that Dr Lanman was the only doctor he'd let do this surgery on himself, should he need it. After a very efficient process arriving at the surgical center, with a very professional, kind, and clearly experienced staff, I went into surgery fairly quickly. Within hours, I walked and was able to go home the same day, with a recovery nurse by my side the entire time. I couldn't believe it. Of course there was some moderate post surgical pain (which they helped me handle, and which passed after a few days, but the pain of my discs pressing against nerves and radiating horrific pain through my low back and upper legs, was gone. It's brought me to tears, thinking of how much of my life revolved around tending to this pain... how much time I've lost with my family and work because I've been immobile. Within the first three weeks of the procedure, I can feel that's now in my past. Even though I feel great already, I'm about to begin physical therapy - a process I'm very much looking forward to. After consulting with three of the top spine surgeons in NYC, who all advised me that I would need a three level fusion, I panicked. At 54, I was terrified that I would lose much of my mobility. I had severe neck pain for a decade. It hit a point where I couldn't carry a bag of groceries. I had blown out three discs in my neck and I had two options, fusion or implants. At 52 I didn't like the idea that fusion would limit my range of motion for the rest of my life. I met with four doctors about getting implants. All agreed I would be a good candidate, the only question was how many? Two of the doctors recommended two replacements and one fusion, while Dr. Lanman and a second Dr. felt three implants would give me the result I wanted. It should be noted that the FDA only recommends two implants, more is considered experimental, despite the fact that more than two have been used for years in patients. I liked Dr. Lanman's manner, his history, references and the fact that he is one of the doctors that the FDA uses in their trials. We scheduled the surgery and in a couple of weeks I completed the procedure. The recovery was remarkable. I was sore for about a week, nothing that was not manageable. After the swelling went down I had ZERO pain in my neck. It was like a miracle! I had a scratchy sounding voice for about a month and that was about it. It's been two months and I still have no pain. I have suffered chronic back problems for over 30 years, and was in constant pain when standing, because of a back injury and degenerating disks pushing on nerves, as well as stenosis causing loss of nerve functions in my legs and feet. I was otherwise healthy and fit because of 4 decades of yoga practice and 50 years on a plant based diet. Other surgeons I saw only seemed to be offering me fusion options for my entire lumbar spine. Dr. Lanman offered me a better alternative which gave me hope. On Jan. 9, 2024, I had surgery performed by Dr. Lanman and his team. The surgery involved a fusion of L5-S1, an artificial disk between L4-L5, and a 3 level laminotomy at L1, L2, and L3. They had me up and walking as soon as I awoke from the anesthesia, and I continued walking more and more each of the 5 days I was in the hospital. After I checked out of the hospital I stayed at a hotel for about 5 days, each day walking more and more and eating out at restaurants with a friend each day. Then, I flew back home to Hawaii, continuing my recovery. Immediately, arriving home, I have been able to make meals, do my laundry, and continue walking longer distances. I have been able to resume my business doing computer services and repairs. I am waiting to get the OK to drive again so I don't feel so restricted. Most people would not even guess I had such major surgery and so far recovery is easier than I had imagined it might be. I am looking forward to getting the OK to do more rehab so I can build the strength in my legs and walk more. This guy. 3 spine surgeries in I decided to see 11 of the "best" spine surgeons in town. 11 surgeons and 20 opinions later. Dr Lanman was by far the best from the get go. The only one who touched my body to see how I felt and moved and seemed to really care. A straight shooter who seemed to be the only adult in the room compared to the other surgeons. Some were over aggressive in their proposal for a 4th operation and some just at a loss. Dr Lanman performed my 4th surgery an L5/ S1 fusion, discectomy and laminectomy. I came to Dr. Lanman's office on a referral from my uncle who had had spinal surgery with him a few years back. At the time I was suffering from a severe herniation of the cervical disc 5-6 and also had severe degeneration of the c4-5 disc. I spoke to several pain specialists and doctors, as well as four surgeons. It was a no brainer choosing Dr. Lanman. First of all, my consult with him was 1.5 hours long - not 15 minutes. From the moment I sat down in his office, I knew I was in good hands because unlike the other surgeons I saw who simply gave me a quick recommendation and asked if they should book me in, Dr. Lanman took the time to explain everything there is to know about the cervical spine, degeneration, herniation, options for treatment and what he recommended. I left with absolutely no questions about my condition, options available to me and even what the recovery for surgery would be like. After choosing Dr. Lanman to perform my double artificial disc replacement, I was actually lucky enough to participate in a clinical trial of a new type of hardware and was even luckier to receive the new hardware in the blind study. The surgery went perfectly, recovery was a piece of cake compared to the months of pain I was in prior to surgery! In the last year since the surgery, I have not seen Dr. Lanman just once or twice, but probably about a dozen times by now (partially because of the trial, but also because they follow up a lot more than other surgeons). Buyer Beware!! You have to be your own advocate. All I asked was to make sure hospital was in network for my spinal surgery. Arlene assured us. The day before the hospital calls and says we're out of network and the surgery will cost $50-90K, which we will be responsible for. We had to reschedule the surgery for a month later at another facility and I had to do it myself. The contract had an underlined portion: "your maximum out of pocket will be $6500." Under that they had fine print that if insurance didn't pay they would then bill us for half the full amount charged (21K). They NEVER contacted the insurance company, never explained any of this. They Never pre-authorized. Hence our insurance company rejected the whole procedure (artificial disc replacement) as experimental. The artificial disc was completely unsuccessful. It made it worse and I was in bed for six months. Dr. Lanman then referred me to a pain management specialist and wrote an Rx for 70 pain pills with 3 refills. Sorry bud, you're someone else's problem now. And your wife isn't allowed to call here anymore. He was late 45 minutes to every appointment. And once their bill collector started harassing us for the new $5000 bill we got after the $6500 we paid, she informed us that we were lucky to be working with Dr. Lanman. Thank goodness I found another surgeon who was caring, professional and not in it for the cash. His contract was completely above board, the whole surgery was pre-approved and the hospital was in contract. Dr. Khurana removed the artificial disc. I'm sure many are happy with Todd but he failed me and put me in bed and miserable for six months then charged me additional funds. Spinal problems are no fun and no joke. Please make sure you take care of all the insurance. Do NOT rely on them! read more
