So I made the call to Handyman Services (Ryan/Owner) and explained what I wanted, an estimate on installation of two doors. To my amazement, he said that he would be in my area in the afternoon. Sure enough he came by and took the measurements and within a couple of hours texted me the estimate. Now that's the kind of service that everyone expects, but rarely receive from any type business. I won't say how much the estimate was for, but I found it reasonable and less than I anticipated the job to be. I scheduled the next open date which was the following week. Ryan came by as scheduled and quickly framed and installed two security screen doors with some modifications. He's quick and efficient, also takes pride in the quality of his work. A few days later their One Restoration team came in to do the tear-down of the damaged upper casement. They were very pleasant, on time and spent a lot of time prepping to make sure they didn't spread the dust & debris. Then Aaron came back & spent 3 days restoring the drywall, prepping, repainting (orange peel), and reinstalling the brackets for the blinds. He even offered to move our furniture back into place. Everything looks as good as new. He did an excellent job and always kept us informed as to what he was doing. We feel that the estimates were very fair. He tore down an old closet and removed a door to give us a flat back wall for a new built-in, framed and drywalled around a lava rock wall so we could install an AC unit, and covered up a CMU wall to give it a clean, smooth look. He also helped with a few smaller fixes along the way without any fuss. He showed up on time, worked quickly, and paid close attention to the details. The work areas were kept tidy every day, and he explained what he was doing so we always knew the plan. What stood out most was how versatile and skilled he is--he handled framing, drywall, and finish work all in one go. He's easy to talk to, gives honest feedback, and genuinely wants the end result to look good. After speaking to at least 8-10+ different…read morecontractors and/or handyman (who claimed to be contractors but had no license or proof to show), let's just say that the hunt to find someone trustworthy, timely and within our budget was like finding a golden needle in a haystack! Firstly, SL Construction was reasonably priced compared to others who were looking to up charge us more than double. I'm not a contractor so I can't specifically tell if the materials were vastly different to justify the difference in price etc, but what I appreciated was SL's timeliness in getting back to us asap, their really thorough follow up via email and text, and that they were legit. I also changed the scope of what exactly I wanted to do several times (adding projects, changing materials) and they were patient and more than accommodating each time. We were also able to verify all their licenses, insurance and all the stuff a contractor should have with the DCCA. Our scope of work was a few items, including: 1) repairing a rotted wood lanai, fully waterproofing, replacing the tile, and busted wood posts, and rotted wood under tile. 2) adding custom railings to 2 outdoor lanais that needed to be fitted exactly to existing metalwork. 3) completely transforming a 90s bathroom (and I changed the scope of work a few times ) 4) tiling another bathroom so it didn't give 90s ick vibes Through the process, I was able to pick my materials and work closely with them via text, email and a shared Google excel tracker as my working document so I didn't loose my mind with all the small but important details. They were incredibly easy to work with in choosing my materials from Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot and Golden Cabinets and picked all the items up. While the crew is heavily Chinese speaking only, working with their project manager, Maggie, is a dream! I will admit that sometimes the crew didn't exactly understand me, but it was super small stuff like moving a cabinet over a few inches, re-installing a faucet so the knobs were the correct way, etc. Anything that I had an issue with was easily remedied by Maggie, whom I mostly communicated with via text. In addition, I've had several "oh s*it!!" moments come up with other things in our aging home (nothing they did, but other things I've since found) and Maggie has been so quick and helpful to send out her team or try to find solutions that aren't gonna break the bank. I really appreciate their steadfast customer service and making you feel like you aren't just a number or an invoice. Further, the team kept our house immaculate - the floor was covered each day, and nothing was left a mess or left evidence that a construction team had been there. I uploaded a few before and after photos, of two of my walls but they worked on several more walls! My CMU block walls and drywall had about 50+ holes, a bunch of which were the size of my index finger, many areas of ripped drywall paper, and numerous outlet-sized drywall cutouts that I wanted patched as if they never existed. Mike came over himself, looked at the job, and gave me a price on the spot. A few weeks later he sent John over to do the work. I was on a pretty tight schedule with an upcoming move and Mike really worked around my schedule as best as he could! John was so kind and efficient, and he took care of every single hole and cut out in under 2 hours and got the walls paint ready for me (I painted the walls the following day). I was expecting the work to cost $1,500 plus easily but Mike's did it for under $600 and the quality is on point!
