If I could give SL Construction 10 stars, I would! After speaking to at least 8-10+ different contractors and/or handyman (who claimed to be contractors but had no license or proof to show), let's just say that the hunt to find someone trustworthy, timely and within our budget was like finding a golden needle in a haystack! Firstly, SL Construction was reasonably priced compared to others who were looking to up charge us more than double. I'm not a contractor so I can't specifically tell if the materials were vastly different to justify the difference in price etc, but what I appreciated was SL's timeliness in getting back to us asap, their really thorough follow up via email and text, and that they were legit. I also changed the scope of what exactly I wanted to do several times (adding projects, changing materials) and they were patient and more than accommodating each time. We were also able to verify all their licenses, insurance and all the stuff a contractor should have with the DCCA. Our scope of work was a few items, including: 1) repairing a rotted wood lanai, fully waterproofing, replacing the tile, and busted wood posts, and rotted wood under tile. 2) adding custom railings to 2 outdoor lanais that needed to be fitted exactly to existing metalwork. 3) completely transforming a 90s bathroom (and I changed the scope of work a few times ) 4) tiling another bathroom so it didn't give 90s ick vibes Through the process, I was able to pick my materials and work closely with them via text, email and a shared Google excel tracker as my working document so I didn't loose my mind with all the small but important details. They were incredibly easy to work with in choosing my materials from Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot and Golden Cabinets and picked all the items up. While the crew is heavily Chinese speaking only, working with their project manager, Maggie, is a dream! I will admit that sometimes the crew didn't exactly understand me, but it was super small stuff like moving a cabinet over a few inches, re-installing a faucet so the knobs were the correct way, etc. Anything that I had an issue with was easily remedied by Maggie, whom I mostly communicated with via text. In addition, I've had several "oh s*it!!" moments come up with other things in our aging home (nothing they did, but other things I've since found) and Maggie has been so quick and helpful to send out her team or try to find solutions that aren't gonna break the bank. I really appreciate their steadfast customer service and making you feel like you aren't just a number or an invoice. Further, the team kept our house immaculate - the floor was covered each day, and nothing was left a mess or left evidence that a construction team had been there. We needed to fix the spalling concrete in our garage, replace our garage roof, and move the HECO line from our garage. We did not know where to start or how much it would cost. We decided to start with electrical. I found SL by putting in a Yelp project for electrical work, and scoring because they were a general contractor and could address ALL of our needs!!! Over the past 4 months, we worked with SL to get what we wanted done, and we also added some new work because they gave us an excellent offer, managed all the work for us, and delivered excellent results. The leader, their laborers, their carpenter, their partners, and Maggie are so wonderful to work with. While waiting for permits to upgrade our meter and move our electrical line, they worked on the trench and poured concrete (hand mixing 120 bags of concrete!!!), replaced our garage roof, replaced our garage doors, removed an aluminum roof attached to the main house, and built a new roof and extended the roof line. They coordinated with HECO to upgrade our electrical service, moved our box, upgraded our electrical service, rewired our upgraded interior box, and just finished with new gutters now that the electrical line was no longer hopping from the garage to the house. They understood that I wanted things neat, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. We will now start saving for future projects, but we will look no further and will call SL as soon as we are ready to start on a new project. We are beyond lucky that we found them. They were very patient and understanding. The electricians had a long wait on that day. HECO were very busy with other power outages and testing at their company on that day. And also they were short handed. I think they waited at the house for 6 hours for HECO. They were able to do and complete the job in 30 minutes once HECO arrived. read more

A nightmare leak turned into a beautiful fix. I had to reroute all my cold and hot water lines. Basically, abandon the underground lines that were leaking and route pipes in the entire house. As that work was happening I wanted to redo the showers, since the walls would be open anyways. Turns out SL are a licensed residential general contractor, electrician, and can bring in licensed plumbers. They coordinated everything and provided a reasonable price to do it. It was a no-brainer. They were clean, quick (but not too quick) and did a good job. I have some knowledge in construction and watched the steps, especially for waterproofing the shower: All steps to my knowledge were followed. Apply waterproofing, curing times, grout lines, and slant the tile shelf to shed water. They tested the tub by filling it with water, checking seals, and leveling off the tub. They were identifying wood rot, improper grounding, and improper wiring of the water heater I was replacing. He was able to explain why the shower fixture I bought was not good. Replacing it in the future would be difficult. He got a fixture that fit the style I wanted and could be serviced. They also were providing more hose bibs than I originally had. They quoted the work, but leave the majority of the materials for me to pay for separately. I told them to buy and pick up since I didn't have a truck. They provided the contracts and were very open about payments and had payment plans if needed. They speak Mandarin and English, and some of the workers speak varying degrees of good to broken English. But any issues that arose, I was able to text and get them fixed. Primary communication was text message and sending photos. No push back or complaining, they just did it. They laid paper so that the floor stays clean. They cleaned up everyday and was able to phase the work so that my family could live in the house with running water and a shower. Construction is always a hassle, but this was the best outcome I could have hoped for. read more

How To Fail In Business Normally I don't write reviews on Yelp (or anywhere else in fact) but my interaction with this building company (SL Construction) was so amazing that I decided to share my experience with their potential customers. The project I entertained was the construction of a vinyl patio enclosure. I have done two vinyl enclosures previously, one a sunroom and the other a screened in porch. I know all the details of those previous constructions because I was deeply involved in the planning and personally witnessed both constructions. They both consisted of aluminum framing and vinyl paneling. I set up my initial consultation with SL for a Friday at 11 AM. On Wednesday they communicated to me "See you tomorrow". I immediately replied "Tomorrow is Thursday". No big deal. They simply got the days mixed up. We made a new appointment for Saturday at 12 noon. Okay, Saturday rolls around. About 10 AM I checked in with them to confirm the appointment and that I wanted a vinyl enclosure. They replied yes they worked with vinyl but once again said "See you tomorrow". I replied that I was actually now waiting for them. They apologized and asked me if the appointment could be delayed until later in the day. Before I could reply they messaged they were on their way. Okay, good. Maggie and Song arrived around 12:30. Maggie was obviously the project manager side of the company. She had the appointment book in hand and made all the arrangements. She was friendly and interactive but fast speaking and we had a minor language barrier. She and Song were Chinese. Song, the builder, was straight-faced, rigid, gave no indication he spoke English and looked like he needed to be elsewhere. Maggie translated all of our interactions. I took them into the yard to show them the project. We quickly went through all the details, measurements and proposed general layout. I had put photos together of my previous vinyl projects and showed them to Song and Maggie. Song (through translation) immediately said the photos showed wood was used in their construction. I said "No, there was no wood. It was aluminum framing and vinyl panels." Okay, we quickly wrapped up the short consultation. We had not really established any real professional relationship based on a common goal. They had asked very few questions. I told them I would send my email address for their proposal. They hurried to their car. As promised, I sent my email address and, to cover my bases, asked them for references for previous vinyl constructions. Later in the day they sent their assessment to me. It was an AI generated reply which obviously went well beyond their English language abilities. Here is a quote: "From the image, the upper window portion does appear to use typical white vinyl slider windows. However, the lower solid wall section (the green area) shows characteristics of conventional wall construction: * The smooth surface is more consistent with stucco or T1-11/siding" They then proposed a "hybrid" construction for me of vinyl and wood. So, they had not believed me that my previous constructions were aluminum framing and vinyl panels only. In addition they did not mention or send any references. They may do good work as other reviews have indicated but I'm not interested. There will be no second consultation. read more

Water was leaking into my bathroom from outside roof and bubbled the drywall, part of the ceiling and wall. Onsite visit located the leak. The job was two-fold: repair the leak on the roof flashing and then repair the drywall. The leak problem was resolved. No further leaks and just in time as we had some heavy rains recently. The drywall repair was done. Bathroom looks like new. They also did some extras not included in the contract. 5 year warranty on work done. Also took pictures for me to address additional roof problems and solutions. Cost was a little more than I expected, but this was holiday season and they completed the work well within the time frame of the contract. Mr Song and Maggie were very accomodating. Listened and addressed my concerns. Workers arrived early, worked through the day. Quality work. Boss here everyday to review and check work. Very satisfied with the work.
