But really, any time I decide to do something I always put a lot of research into it and will often make a permanent decision to utilize a service/company before meeting with them and I won't bother shopping around beyond my computer screen. This may seem foolhardy, but I have hardly been let down this way, and truthfully my lifestyle (stay-at-home mom w/two evil kids under 4 years...okay, not evil, they just don't like me) needs me to make hard decisions as soon as I can or I head down the road of procrastination...kids always come first. I do also research beyond reviews on Yelp so I have an idea of how much I expect to spend and what I can expect from the overall process, so stop judging. Anyway, Matt got back to me almost immediately after requesting an estimate and we were able to work out a meeting very easily about a week out, though I believe we could have met sooner, I needed to do it when I'd have someone to help with my kids or I can't understand what anyone is saying to me and usually forget entire conversations beyond, "Mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, mammamamamamamamamommymommymommy!" "What?" "Hello." Finally met with him and found him to be an extremely professional and friendly guy. Zero awkwardness and felt more like dealing with a cousin or brother. I'd like to point out that my youngest son (1.5yr) is not Mr. Aloha like his older brother....he hates strangers. He generally cries if new people try to hold him, sometimes just talking to him gets him going...he was totally attached to Matt. Even gave him a hug and kiss when he left. I'd like to think of babies sort of like dogs and cats, you know, they tend to have a sixth sense of who can be trusted and who's gonna poke them in the eye or take their food. Matt spent a lot of time with me discussing not only the initial problem I needed fixed (front porch was falling apart), but I explained we planned on remodeling the entire home, and building up/expanding half of it, and during the interim I need other odd jobs taken care of, so we discussed just about everything and he came up with a plan based on my overall needs. Basically while they're doing the small stuff, they will just do what's necessary for us to live normally until we can get the remodel started -- not setting me up to spend thousands on something he'll be tearing down in a year. Only reason we can't get the remodel started right now is we still need to buy the house. It's one of those "grandpa left it to four kids with various stipulations" kinda deals. There's another thing Matt knows about...he's also a realtor and was able to help me figure out how we go about getting the ball rolling on that stuff. I seriously have no clue, and our situation is slightly more complicated since we already own two other houses but have to live in this one. He doesn't push anything on me; he will let me know his opinion if it's different than mine, with an explanation why my choice might not be what he'd do, but ultimately (no arm pulling) will go with whatever I'm comfortable with. I appreciate getting a professional's opinion (I've worked with other people before and have had them just do exactly what I told them to which didn't work out very well because I don't always have a full understanding of the way things need to be done, or I've had them flat out refuse to do something unless I go with exactly what they want.) So they've just completed the first job which was tearing down our old porch (some termite damage and a brick wall that was probably being held up by ants and their homes), and rebuilding/expanding it. I was able to show Matt some pictures of what I liked and my porch looks better than I imagined. His team, Tim & Kawika are super friendly and professional as well, and they also passed the test with my kids. They're coming back today to start on putting in a window a/c, then on to bigger projects. I'd write more but apparently I've (for the first time) hit Yelp's limit. We had rain damage to an upstairs window casement after the outside caulking had deteriorated. Aaron from Handy Andy was able to clean & restore the area and get the right paint for the trim. A few days later their One Restoration team came in to do the tear-down of the damaged upper casement. They were very pleasant, on time and spent a lot of time prepping to make sure they didn't spread the dust & debris. Then Aaron came back & spent 3 days restoring the drywall, prepping, repainting (orange peel), and reinstalling the brackets for the blinds. He even offered to move our furniture back into place. Everything looks as good as new. He did an excellent job and always kept us informed as to what he was doing. We feel that the estimates were very fair. Handy Hawaii really went above and beyond for me and my little family. I brought them in to replace the doors of the house, both exterior and interior. Then we decided to tie in replacing the old carpet with the luxurious vinyl flooring(in the picture). I also asked them to paint a bedroom for me. They not only did all of that but also repaired drywall in the hallway and created a gorgeous accent wall in my livingroom. Mat and his team of professionals are very hardworking, kind and most of all dedicated to excellence in all that they do. This was a big project and I'm grateful they got it done ahead of schedule and within my budget. I would start with zero stars if I could. Matt is the consummate snake oil salesman. He talks a huge game but delivers nothing. We overpaid for his services based on his review, only to find out from his subcontractors that he goes back after the fact on past jobs to give "freebies and add-ones" in order to satisfy poor reviews and get his vaunted "perfect 5-star review". To top it off, he makes his subs pay for the add-one out of their overhead! I should have gone with my gut the first time we met, or when he surprised us with the fact that we would have to do a permit as an owner/builder since he doesn't actually have a full general contractor's license. He has to use his dad's license number, but doesn't because his own dad charges him 5% to use it. His team destroyed our yard and only cleaned up after repeated requests to fix things. My garden and irrigation system heads remain buried. Contractual requirements remain unfulfilled, despite the fact that we have paid him over half of the "max budget". I'm attaching some pictures of his fine work, including the new hole in our exterior ceiling where his employee stepped through the floor and didn't repair it. Stay far away from this guy. His subs were decent, but Matt is out of his depth as a contractor. Don't make the same mistake we did. Over budget, not in schedule, and left to hold the bag in a mess to have to hire somebody else to come fix. Please, please, heed my warnings. I contacted Handy Hawaii last month. I made an appointment with Rob to come to my apartment to give me a quote on my kitchen. We agreed on a time and date. Rob never showed up to the appointment and he never called to cancel or reschedule either. I called several times to see what happened and left messages and no call backs. My husband took time off work so he could meet Rob and even waited for him an extra 45 mins before he went back to work. Omgosh Matt is the best! We needed a few things repaired and removed in our apartment we were renting before the end of the month (9 days) as we were moving. I went to their website and asked for a quote and within 5 minutes I got a confirmation email from Matt saying he'd be in contact with me soon. About 3 minutes after receiving his email he was calling me to see what I needed and when they'd be able to come out. Fortunately Matt said Scot would be able to come out the next day. Scot came out and was able to repair and remove what I needed! Scot and Matt were wonderful to work with and payment is so easy and convenient! Contacted Home advisor via the internet for refrigerator repair. They booked a repairman thru Handy. Repairman came, identified the problem in about 15 minutes. I did advise Home advisor that I believed it was the fan motor as the freezer was fine but refrigerator wasn't working. The Handy guy was unable to acquire the fan motor as he had no business license. He was at my home for an additional 2 hours awaiting a reply from Handy as to what to do. Being a disabled Vet I am limited to what I can do around the house. So I had Handy Hawaii replace and repair my front steps, kitchen faucet, kitchen sink plumbing, garbage disposal, and install over the range microwave. These jobs were completed quicker than I expected and within budget. The attention to detail made me feel I made the right choice. Matt was in constant contact with me all the way until the work was completed. All the workers were very nice to explain things that got done and also what there professional ideas on stair rails and sink plumbing would work best. I can only comment on Handy Hawaii in terms of professionalism and quick turn around for a bid as I have no experience with their work. As an out-of-state homeowner, it isn't always easy to find someone to do home repairs or carpentry. I needed a repair or replacement of a large back deck on my home which had been weathered and water damaged over the past decade. I called Matthew who picked up the phone right away and just so happened to be in Kailua that day. I arranged for him to meet with my tenant. He was there within a couple of hours and completed a bid the following day, complete with photos, scope of work and pricing. Our front room, mud room and second bathroom badly needed work. We chose Handy Hawaii / Hawaii Design and Development to do the work, after getting a number of estimates from others. We liked that they guaranteed that the cost would not go above the estimate given. As the work progressed, we most definitely liked the crew of workers who did the majority of the work. They were hard workers, very personable, very capable, and willing to work longer hours to get a particular job finished. They put in a new ceiling and lighting, repainted all the walls, put in new flooring, installed a new toilet and sink. Please do not use him he took 35k from us and never even came close to completing the project. He (Matt or Matthew Azouz) did a very shady job of doing an initial rough in for a master bedroom and bath and his team took their tools and left and never came back! During the 3 weeks his team was at our house we only saw him 4 times and my husband was there all day long with his team. We simply wanted him to finish the job but he was too immature to even discuss the situation with us. I am in the US Army and it makes me sick that he does this to those that serve! After the upstairs neighbor's condo leaked into our living room we were in need of a contractor to do the repair to our ceiling, flooring and windows. We got a lot of estimates for the work. We decided on Handy Hawaii not because of price but because they had good reviews, wrote concise estimates, were very personable, and were very responsive to our ideas and giving us options that would get us a better finished product. We signed a contract with them and give them the initial down payment, they were at work on the day and time they promised. They kept us updated on the repairs and actually completed the repairs so we could move back in early. We had one change that they had to come back and do for us that was different from the original contract but they were happy to make the changes and find the right options for us to get what we wanted. I have recommended them to some of my neighbors and coworkers. They will be my first call if and when I have need of work done in our home. They were very polite and extremely quick to work us into their schedule which earned them their two stars. Unfortunately the work was completely unsatisfactory -- no tape for the inside corners?? It was my fault for not requiring a detailed contract prior to beginning the work, so I chose not to fight and instead just brought in someone we had worked with before to clean up afterwards. I can't comment on any skills/tasks other than drywall, but I would strongly recommend a detailed contract so everyone is clear on the expectations. read more
