Decadent and flavorful food, excellent service, with generous portions.
My wife and I wanted to experience fine Parisian dining for our anniversary dinner, though we cane close to booking omakase (what can I say, we love sushi). We tried Septime, but it was impossibly booked, and narrowed it down to this recent Joel Robuchon addition and Baieta. In the end, I decided to trust the name and go with Joel Robuchon. Looking back, I should have gone with Baieta since the 3 star Joe Robuchon in Las Vegas is close to home. Anyway, on to the experience and food!
We were 30 minutes late to our reservation due to google maps shenanigans, but the host was very much understanding and seated us immediately (I called to let them know we were late). The sommelier was so helpful in explaining the French only menu, and as I eyeballed the tasting menu, I realized that I was in over my head - there was roughly 12-14 dishes on the tasting menu! My wife and I are not big eaters, and we dont like wasting food - we would struggle to get through the halfway point here. So we got some plates from the tasting menu and some recs from the sommelier.
The first, the Amuse, was on the house: the foie gras mousse with parmesan cheese foam. It was creamy, rich (but not overly so), and sweet. Wow, what a way to start the meal!
Next, we were served the sea bream carpaccio with a citrus vinaigrette. The flavors were intense, especially the citrus vinaigrette, and the sea bream was so soft it almost melted on the tongue. Even though we ordered the smaller portion, it was a little too much for us - more than 20 pieces!
In the middle of all the sea bream goodness, we were then served the smoked wagyu charcuterie. I was really curious about this plate, because knowing how pricy wagyu is, why would you want to smoke it and serve it as charcuterie? I got my answer, as I bit into it on a toast with tomatoes. This tasted comparable to the bellota iberico ham I had a few days back in Spain, though I think the bellota iberico ham was sweeter. Definitely good, but I think I should have ordered something else, as the richness of the wagyu was getting to me: my wife ate 1/4 of it and told me to finish the rest, so my blood vessels were about to explode! I guess too much wagyu isnt a good thing...
Out came the quail with the foie gras center and creamy mashed potatoes. When I eat quail, I usually eat it fried, so eating it grilled with glace was new to me. It was amazing, tender and the glace was caramelized. The foie gras in the center added even more richness to the plate, and I looked at my wife and knew we were getting stuffed. I excuses myself to the bathroom to wash my hands, but when I saw a couch there, I took a much needed timeout and just sat there for 15 minutes!
When I came back to our counter, we were immediately served the quinoa with egg and truffles. As full as we were, this was the highlight of our meal: the sunny side up egg was laid on top of the quinoa, and when the yolk broke into the quinoa, a spoonful of it combined with the truffles was heavenly. There really is no words to describe it. We devoured this plate, and realized we had an entree left (these were all petit portions!!).
The entree was the lobster. Im not a huge lobster fan, but when I do eat it, I prefer it the Chinese/Vietnamese style, which I find much more flavorful than steamed lobster with butter. This lobster was more like the one I was used to, it was incredibly flavorful. The lobster was sauteed with garlic, basil and some other seasonings, and as it was an entree portion, it was split in half, and was served with fries and another plate of mash. We couldn't finish the lobster, and felt really bad for wasting it!
The meal ended with the most delicious and moist madeleines.
Overall, the food was excellent, though the portions were overwhelming, even for the petite dishes. For any diner who's contemplating the tasting menu for dinner, I'd highly recommend just going off course and getting 3-5 petit plates and an appetizer: that is more than enough food for 2 people. The sommelier and the host were so kind and patient with us, and the wait staff kept refilling out waters and checking on us constantly, even amidst the busy Friday dinner crowd. As for the bill, with 2 glasses of champagne, our damage came to under 400 Euros; only another 100 E and we would have had the whole tasting menu, but would have regretted it by wasting so much food (togo boxes werent allowed, which is why we tried to eat everything!). Bon apetit! read more
