I only had time for one meal in Paris and I'm so glad I chose this place!! They have three little shops next to each other specializing in different things. I went to the wine bar with seafood. All the menu items with pictures is hanging on the ceiling and the wine list is just the display on the wall. I don't speak French at all so I was glad I could literally just point. The food was amazing. Soft boiled egg with cavier was unique and shockingly delish. Scallops were uber tender and the greens were very flavorful. Fish tartare was mouth watering. Octopus was very yummy and very fresh. The only thing that didn't wow us were the mussels - not very fresh. But everything else was so good it more than made up for it. For dessert they gave complimentary yummy cheese. This restaurant is a standing room only tapas bar. All the dishes that we tried and the wine where all superb! The wait staff was very nice and he spoke perfect English. He was very helpful on recommending dishes and wine. We enjoyed everything he suggested. I recommend trying the grilled foie gras, carmelized pork, fried quail legs and blood sausage macaroon to name a few. The waiter also suggested some daily specials so ask about those. read more

This was hands down, my favorite dining experience in Paris. I love the fact that this was a tapas bar, since it allowed me to try 6 different plates and 6 paired glasses of wine for about 100 euro. The bartender was very attentive and offers suggestions if you ask, and the menu is quite extensive so there's something for everybody. Our favorite was actually the cheapest item we ordered: the pear ice cream for 1 euro. If they have it, try it!!! I'd come back for the atmosphere alone. Due to the small space (standing room only, as small as a hallway) it created a super friendly vibe where you were meeting and eating with strangers, people were dancing, funk music was playing, and everyone is just having a great time. This place was absolutely delightful! Both the food, and service, was top notch. It's worth noting that there are two different sides to this restaurant, one room carrying a, "mer", or seafood based menu, and one carrying a, "land", or meat based menu. I personally went to the "mer" side of the restaurant, so my review will be specifically for that area. This is definitely a great place to hang out with friends and get a feel of the local nightlife, as the bar carried a casual yet eclectic air to it. Although, keep in mind space is pretty limited so it's probably best to go with only one or two friends. Upon entering, the bar left a lasting impression with the whimsical way it presented itself. You are greeted with the sound of warm, chattering voices, and a myriad of papers hanging from the ceiling, revealing the menu. This display wasn't just for show either, as the pictures made it extremely easy for non-french speakers to order. All of their tapas were delicious, and paired great with the wine as well. I was especially fond of a shrimp dish (of which the name escapes me) that was fried to absolute perfection, the basil inside giving it the perfect amount of brightness. I loved it. The bartender, Eric, was also extremely kind and accommodating, and provided us with great help, even though we were bumbling Americans with very limited french. Probably the best meal I ate in Paris although a fondue place we ate at was also very good. This place is cozy - you eat/ drink at standing tables down a narrow passageway. Menu items hang from cards suspended from the roof so browse through before ordering. Service is quick and the food is absolutely great. I'm a fan of Anthony Bourdain. So after I watched the episode of when he was in Paris, I quickly bookmarked them. Out of all of them, L'Avant Comptoir intrigued me the most, so we came here for a snack on our way to the Luxembourg Garden! Luckily, we came at an off time (3pm) so there was barely anyone in there. We were overwhelmed with all the choices that are hanging from the ceiling, before we even stepped foot into the restaurant I knew that I HAD TO HAVE THE FOIE MACARON!! So we ordered 1, and the BF wanted to try the blood sausage macaron. In addition to that, we ordered the seared foie gras (because when in France, foie gras everythingggg), duck hearts, and a dish that we thought was bone marrow (ended up to be pork rind). The foie macaron was EVERYTHING. The foie was creamy and delicious. The lemon macaron itself had a nice chewy texture. Combined, it was amazing. A must get! The BF absolutely loved the blood sausage macaron, and he hates macarons (*gasp* I know). I tried the teeniest bite, but I'm not a fan of blood sausage anyways so I didn't like it. The seared foie was heaven, but with seared foie it's hard to go wrong. We both enjoyed the duck hearts! Chewy, but not overly so, and great flavor! The dish that we thought was bone marrow was some kind of pork rind stuffed with soemthing..? I had a taste and it was okay, but again, not a fan of pork. The chef also gave us a freebie! The croquettes which were soooo good! We washed these all down with a glass of red recommended by the bartender. Hm came here my first night in Paris, and while there were no particular problems, I did not love any of the dishes. We ordered a ham charcuterie (sorry no idea which one), foie gras with cherries, and an artichoke dish. None of them were terrible, none were particularly good. The ham was nice but nothing you couldn't get from a grocery store. The foie gras actually made one of my friends sick (but to be fair, she typically doesn't eat red meat), and the artichoke was such a small dish that it just wasn't much for each person. The bread is good though, especially when warm, and the butter is fun (it's a huge mound on a plate that you self-serve from). Otherwise though, none of the dishes were outstanding and the space is quite small. We were early so sat at the bar, but apparently during busy time it's standing room only. I might go back and try a few different dishes if a friend wanted to, but otherwise would not recommend. read more

Kneel before Zod, all other crepes. This is a tiny to-go shop attached to Le Comptoir du Relais (literally - "the front desk") which itself is not very large. Many reviews seem to be confusing the two. Almost every crepe place in Paris has the sweet/savory basics - you have sugar, chocolate, nutella, banana, and then ham, cheese, and maybe mushrooms. This place has a wall full of toppings of all kinds. You can get steak. You can get raspberries. You can get heirloom tomatoes. You could probably get heroin if you asked nicely. I got a crepe with bananas, chocolate and sugar. It was the size of my face. It was much like a Cinnabon, in that the more you ate it, the closer you got to the incredible core. My last bite was piping hot dough bathed in chocolate (which I really drank, more so than ate). By the time I was finished, I looked like I had lost a food fight. I'm only putting up the before picture. I doubt this will ever be topped. read more

I had really high expectations for this spot--the dishes look so unique and delicious in the photos of people's reviews, but I somehow left disappointed. The only memorable one was the Foie Gras and Roasted Pepper Skewer with balsamic reduction. It was amazing in both taste and texture--I think that even people who don't like foie gras would enjoy this. I definitely recommend ordering this dish. We ordered a few other dishes, including the duck confit hot dog, which tasted pretty good but wasn't anything to rave about. We also ordered an artichoke that came with a vinaigrette sauce--the guy behind the bar saw an artichoke dish that was randomly sitting at the bar and looked uneaten, and just grabbed that one and served it to us. Who knows how long it was sitting out there and if someone else touched it. The staff was friendly, but my husband and I were turned off by how the guy behind the bar was handling food with his bare hands. Aside from handling money, he kept rubbing his nose and running his hands through his hair. In addition to the unsanitariness, we weren't that amazed by the food. It may be that we didn't order the right dishes, but it was difficult to order off of ceiling menus when the place was so crowded. My rating is somewhere between 2-3 stars, but I went down to the hygiene issue. I might be willing to give this place another try, but I'd keep an eye on whoever is making/serving the dishes. read more

We wanted to eat at Le Comptoir du Relais but the wait was ridiculous and we didn't want to waste precious time in Paris standing in line so we went to the next best thing and it was by far the best meal I had in Paris. I can't wait to see what next door has to offer. This place is so cute and so simple. There's a small counter area with a few seats and a counter along the wall. It's tiny but you don't really mind after you start gobbling up the yummy food. They have pictures for some of the menu items which helps when ordering. The two guys behind the counter were to the point but still patient even though everyone was trying to get their attention to order. Even though it was just two people, they somehow managed to whip up everyone's orders. They really knew what they were doing. It's tapas style so you get to try a lot of different things without getting full. We got the salmon croquette, bone marrow, salumi plate, foie gras and a beef panini-type thing. If you find you're not enjoying yourself at L'Avant Comptoir, you are doing something wrong with your life. Meant for an aperitif before heading to the restaurant next door, it's a tiny space with standing room only. It's also somewhat overwhelming at first since there doesn't seem to be a line and orders are just shouted over the bar in French. Don't let this intimidate you! Order a glass of wine and a few small plates (I HIGHLY suggest you go with the anchovies & saucisson), and then find a way to wiggle yourself over to the middle counter. Once you manage to get a spot there, you're not going to want to move for as long as possible because this is where you will find unlimited complimentary baguette and a communal MOUND of salted butter to slather over everything you've ordered. Several hours, several plates, several glasses of wine, loaves of baguettes, and approximately a whole stick of butter later, I rolled out of there... and the next time I'm in Paris... you can be sure I'm going to wiggle my way back in. read more

I was quite intrigued when fellow Angeleno said she'd trade Bestia for L'Avant Comptoir -- almost. I've been here three times in one week! so far, once at open, once mid afternoon, and once late at night. Very popular, crowded, festive -- standing only, no seats. The menu hangs from the ceiling and it is hard to read every item available, which only encourages you to return. The foie gras with cherries is my favorite -- every bite so luscious. The brandade morue was quite creamy and divine. I wish they'd offer a salad lyonnaise, or something similar to cut some of the richness of the other dishes. Tried the broiled scallop as well as the scallop w/thyme skewer. Blistered padron peppers are much like shishito peppers. The escargot in pastry shells was a nice touch. If I lived here, I'd be a regular, no question. Two main reasons I'm giving four instead of five stars -- comfort. It isn't very comfortable to be elbowed and poked at peak hours. There was a couple making out in front of the chalkboard menu which lists daily specials and it annoyed everyone. The people standing were like, "C'mon, get a room, we want to eat." It gets very hot and mighty uncomfortable as you try to juggle your wine glass and food. If you're small, the men "manspread," to crowd you out. One of the staff members actually encouraged me, "Don't leave because of them. If you want to have dessert, have dessert. Stand your ground." All the wine bottles are marked what a glass of wine costs, and what a bottle would costs. Unfortunately, all the wine bottles are behind refrigerator doors, and you can't read the label to even know what vintage, AOC, variety the wine is. This is a major drawback if you are not fluent in French. That's how I ended up trying the Beaujolais qui arrivee and letting the staff choose what to serve me. Red, white, rose? Strong, weak? There's got to be a better way. The off-peak hours are 3 PM-6 PM. The staff work long hours, so kudos to them. They told me they are open every day of the week, and are connected to a hotel. It's difficult knowing one of my favorite places to dine is in another country completely... I knew from the moment i walked in i would love this place. There's a stand serving delicious and affordable crepes at the front. Don't be fooled and notice the drawing of a pig adorning their entryway curtain. Push through and there's the small wine bar serving french tapas - L'Avant Comptoir! I went multiple times throughout my trip and it was always lively no matter what time of day it was. Get a coveted spot and find yourself in close quarters with fellow diners. You have to be okay with this because you'll be breaking bread with them, literally. Communal bread and BORDIER BUTTER. This butter was the first hook. I contemplated for a long time at the bar.. thinking of ways to freeze it and bring it back home. Look up and find the menu. Favorites: charcuterie of course, seared foie gras, carpaccio. It was too much fun to try different wines and order from the picture menu above. On my last visit to L'avant Comptoir i conveniently noticed work being done next door, in between Le Comptoir du Relais and L'avant Comptoir - a seafood front! This place is so cool, came here recently upon reading so many glowing Yelp reviews and was definitely not disappointed! The space is VERY small, and it's standing only so if you're looking for a nice sit-down restaurant, try its sister restaurant next door. I've read that the wait can get long at night but we arrived on a Monday around 12:30PM for lunch and the place was empty, which was awesome. The menu is hung up everywhere, there are photos so even if you don't read French, you kind of get the idea of what's what. Otherwise, just ask the bartender, super nice and will explain what's good. You can tell the bartender what kind of wine you like and he'll pour you his recommendations. The wines we had were all amazing. As for food, we got the foie gras with orange jam, beef carpaccio, duck confit hot dog, and the blood sausage macaron. Everything was delightful, I would definitely recommend trying the blood sausage macaron, it's unlike anything I've ever tasted. Despite the small tapas-sized portions, we left with full bellies. Oh my goodness. If you are in Paris, L'Avant Comptoir is a must try! Such a great selection of French tapas in a fun, lively environment. I tried the foie gras and it was cooked to perfection. The taste and texture of it reminded me of pork belly. The price was not too bad either. I also had the crepes on two occasions. One time I got the savory crepe of the day, which contained cheese, salad, artichoke, and pastrami. The other time, I had a sweet crepe filled with chocolate and banana. The crepes are absolutely HUGE and cost less than €5. I admit they are even a little overindulgent. If you can finish a whole crepe on your own, then you are an absolute beast. House Red Wine (3€): One of the best red wines I've had in Paris - expected from a wine bar! Jamon and Artichoke Cream on Waffles (5€): The artichoke cream was very good, and the addition of the waffle was a nice/smart touch. When people ask me what I recommend to eat in Paris, this little bar is always the first that comes to mind. The way this bar/restaurant is setup is tricky or clever? There's a restaurant right next door that has a similar name as this bar and also very crowded. This little bar is really easy miss due to its size. It's just a small strip of hallway that's been converted into a bar with standing area, no seating. There's no menus for food, all the delicious goodness are hung from the ceiling. It was extremely hard to see all the different food they have, that's one of the huge downside for me. But all the placards of these food have pictures on them .. Still difficult to see if they're not a couple feet from you. If you're at the end of the bar, you ain't ordering anything shown in the front.. Can't see sh*t. Anyhow.. Drinks were great but the food were even better. Baskets of bread and butter all cross the bar tables for anyone to consume. Although trying to order is somewhat like trying to get a bartender's attention in a club. You can't really go wrong with anything you order, just about everything I had were delicious. Definitely some of the best food I've had in Paris. Prices are very reasonable, especially for Paris standards. At least one of the bartender there speaks English well so you got no problem if you can't speak French. Definitely worth the visit if you are in Paris. read more

Come for the crepes and waffles, at the window before the bar. The guy might seem rude but he's actually really nice. The crepe of the day for 6€ is a crazy steal. Crepes are huge!!! My boyfriend and I can do two crepes, drinks, and a dessert for 13€ which is really cheap for Paris. The waffles are delicious and come with a ton of chocolate. A Nutella crepe comes to 2.5€ which to me is crazy in Paris and even crazier in this neighborhood. Although they only have two crepe machines and a waffle machine, they work fast!!! There is no area to really eat so everything will be takeaway and the food is packaged really well. The waffles reheat well as well. The eggs isn't cooked all the way if you ask for egg so be careful. The desserts (cookies) are really cooked well. They also have sandwiches on delicious bread. They use a ton of arugula for the crepes and sandwiches which is such a plus. The bar is standing only and they have cheap tapas and drinks. This place gets really busy so come early!! read more

L'Avant Comptoir was one of the more delightful discoveries during our recent trip to Paris. It is a teeny tiny bar with about 3 feet of clearance before you hit the wall. This place is so ridiculously good that it is jam packed. For the chance to savor amazing mouth-watering tapas you must be willing to subject yourself to becoming a part of the human sardine experiment. Sooo good: -Croquettes -Pork belly -Carpaccio -Fried Calamari I definitely plan to squeeze into this seat-less bar again. read more
