A small little shop in Paris. We went in and there were only a few tables and the waiter said that we would have to finish our meal in about 1.5 hours because there were reservations later on. We sat in a table in a very cramped alleyway. The menu didn't really have that many vegetarian options on it and so I ended up going with the Taglioni Pomodoro Basilico dish and got a spritz as well. The spritz was decent, but definitely not as good as the ones I've had in Italy and was slightly more expensive too. There was more of a bitter taste then there was a sweet taste. The pasta was also decent. You could definitely taste that the pasta was homemade (and not frozen) and there was a lot of red sauce on the pasta, but there was a weird aftertaste with the pasta that came from the ricotta and burrata cheese. It's supposed to be rich, but it definitely felt uncomfortable at times. I would've rather had the pasta with just the sauce. They also give you a block of parmesan and a grater for the table which is great because you get fresh parmesan and you get to choose how much you want. Not the best pasta in the world, but if you want something homemade, definitely give this place a try. read more

From the tiny painted door way, to the tiny hall-like dining room, to the beautiful and charming Italian waitresses, to the handsome bearded chef peeking over the kitchen counter, to the warm yellow walls speckled with maps of the mother country, and to all the hearty, creamy, meaty pasta in between...I'm simply besotted with this place! Needless to say I eat here a lot. Friday night I came here for dinner. As a little warm up, my table of four ordered the burrata. We were shocked when a hunk of cheese the size of a gorilla's fist came out. What a testament to the amazing versatility of milk and cream! It had the consistency of a perfect soft-boiled egg, firm on the outside and just barely oozy on the inside. I was loathe to share it with my table so its for the best I was with my boyfriend and his parents and I felt compelled to show some civilized restraint, otherwise I wouldn't have had room for my main course! I never understand our waitress when she explains the plat du jour, but I always order it. Why? Well if you've ever heard French delivered with Italian melody, enthusiasm, and gesticulation, you know. When the waitress speaks, my mind wanders and I indulge in noble dreams of one day living and eating in Tuscany. If a mere description of a dish can make me feel that transcendent, I have no other choice but to order it. Last night's plat du jour was a pappardelle in creamy pesto with sausage. Every element of this dish bursted with flavor, as if I could taste each ingredient individually: the eggs in the pasta, the spices in the sausage, the butter and cream and parmesan in the sauce. When not savoring the food, wine, or conversation, I would watch the waitresses roll and slice the pasta in between taking orders and serving tables. Their movements are always so fluid: knead, roll, chop, whisk off to the kitchen. Something about seeing it two feet in front of me as dough and eating it 5 minutes later as a hot cooked meal is so satisfying. So much so, that I don't really see the point in doing it myself when I can go here and have someone else do it for me for my viewing and eating pleasure. read more

Alright so here's the deal. If I lived in Paris, there is absolutely no way I would write a review for this place. In fact, maybe I would write a negative review about this place just to keep it secret. But since I don't come to Paris very often, I don't mind spilling my guts: This is the best Italian you can find in Paris. Every day, the crew at L'Osteria dell'Anima cuts their own pasta. It is literally fresh every day, and you can taste it in every dish. When I arrived here the first time, I thought they actually cut the pasta as you ordered it but it wasn't the case. Didn't matter. I can name maybe my three favorite Italian places in the world, but the lasagna at any of them is at least on par to the one here -- this one might be the best ever. Thin layers of the most tender pasta with beef, pork and veal married with cheese and bechamel ... my goodness it's amazing. We also had the maltagliati with spinach and braciole. Incredible, tender pasta with a rich, creamy sauce. It was exquisite. The food was so good, we came back days later and tried their ravioli special -- smoked bufala mozzarella tucked inside delicious pasta pockets and served with sausage in a tomato sauce. All authentic, all made from scratch and all delicious. We had the tiramisu on our final visit and it was also very rich and tasty. Very moist. One of the best tiramisus we've ever had. The place is affordable and incredibly delicious, but you've got to have a reservation because they have just eight tables. It's a gem of a place and a hole in the wall. We saw several couples get turned away without reservations. And don't worry, if you only speak English they will help you with your order. They even have paper towels in the bathroom, which is rare for Paris restaurants! If you're planning to go to Paris and want an authentic Italian meal with scratch ingredients, call them up and make a reservation. You will be so glad you did. Bon appétit. read more

Friendly staff spoke English and were very helpful in explaining the menu. I had the spinach cream pasta, something I hadn't encountered at other Italian restaurants. The pasta was superb, the creamed spinach sauce was delicious and it was a wonderful meal for under 20E. The restaurant itself is quite small, indeed the entryway is easy to miss. This was for years one of my favorite gems in the Bataclan neighborhood, but I've just had the outrageous experience of having reserved for four people with a phone message two weeks in advance only to be told that "if we didn't call you back, it wasn't reserved." So if they can't reserve, doesn't the customer deserve a call back? What is the customer anyway, a mind reader? I'm afraid what were a friendly little Italian group have acquired the all-too frequent Parisian attitude of "the customer is always ... wrong." read more

So we stumbled upon this place and made a reservation. We came back at the right time and they sat us by the door. We asked to move and they insisted we sit there. Horrible customer service, we froze every time the door was open. The food was good and homemade pasta was nice but having to eat w my jacket on is not acceptable. Really delicious, hidden gem right outside of Paris. All the pasta is homemade!! We got the freshly slice prosciutto and buffalo mozzarella to start. Both outrageously fresh. For an entree I got the linguini with pesto. I make a lot of pesto at home, and this pesto was amazing! It held nicely to the pasta, and their was planty left for bread dipping! They pasta's are definitely big enough to share, which is nice if you want to try multiple things on the menu. When visiting Paris you should without a doubt visit L'Osteria! read more

This Italian meal was one of the highlights from a week stay in Paris. L'Osteria dell'anima is a tiny, charming restaurant located in the up and coming Oberkampf neighborhood. As with tiny restaurants with even tinier kitchens their menu is limited with maybe less than 20 items total. However the service and food were exceptionally good. My husband and I stopped in on Saturday night around 7:00pm without reservations and were told that they were completely booked for the entire evening. We were disappointed and walked out but decided to go back in to see if we could make a reservation for dinner on Sunday. The nice folks at dell'anima said that they were closed on Sundays and must have taken our crestfallen faces to heart because they crammed us into their last table in the very back asking us if we thought we could finish dinner in two hours when the next party (who had reservations) would be coming in. Parisians like to take their time at dinner and restaurants do not bring your check to the table until it is asked for so we told them no problem. My hubby and I shared an Italian salumi platter, lasagna, another olive oil based pasta dish and house made tiramisu for dinner. Everything was simply wonderful, fresh and authentic to how it would be made in Italy. Something to make note of is their pasta which is made fresh in house, in fact one of the wait staff was rolling out pasta at the table behind us. Would highly recommend. read more

The menu is perfect not too many choices but just enough. I recommend getting there no later than 7:30 as it fills up fast because it is small. This was my last meal during a week-long trip to Paris, and this was the BEST meal I had by far. They make fresh made pasta right in the seating area. The pasta melts in your mouth. We tried 3 pastas -- squid ink, lasagna, and seafood. All 3 were A+ pastas, and the lasagna was the best pasta dish I've ever had in my life. It definitely tops all the Italian restaurants I've been to in SF (SPQR, Quince, Delfina, Flour + Water, etc) and, yes, even Italy (though note I haven't spent much time in Italy). On all future trips to Paris this is the one restaurant I'd want to visit each time. This place is a tiny (probably seats about 25 people max), borderline hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant. We had 3 pastas, 3 drinks, and dessert for 79 Euros. Not that I care about the price of good food, but it's interesting that this was my favorite meals despite the fact that I went to much more famous and expensive places this week. L'Osteria is authentic Italian. It was superb. I did not have a reservation, but the staff were kind enough to accommodate me for lunch. I had pasta pomodoro -- which is admittedly a simple dish, but it was delicious! The tomato sauce was fresh and homemade, as was the pasta. They make their pasta in house; when you enter the restaurant, you can see the machine they use to make their pasta. They have lunch time menus, for a great value. Amazing freshly-made pasta. You can see them making it fresh to order on a big pasta-cutting contraption in the middle of the restaurant. You need to make a reservation because there are only about 10 tables and it fills up fast. The BEST meal I have had in Paris, but make sure you have a reservation. They are completely booked every single night of the week and had to turn 6 different groups of people away just while we were eating. The food is incredibly fresh (made right by the tables) and the ambience is perfect. The menu is entirely in Italian, so have Google Translate ready, or just ask one of the nice servers for their recommendation. I had the lasagne per her recommendation and it was the best Lasagne I have ever had! (Sorry, Mom!). They are good for groups, but they split our group of 8 into two tables as the place is quite cozy. went to dinner last night. The owner is amazing. She is honest and was very patient with my wife who is very picky. we had her special starter which was excellent. i then had the branzino which was great and the polenta was authentic. My wife had the homemade pasta which was fabulous. The desserts made in casa was outstanding. The restaurant was so good we are going back tomorrow. Hats off to a job well done. read more
