This is not a polished, Instagram-perfect restaurant and that's exactly the point. That's why I love it so much. Tucked inside La Placita de Santurce, its a small, casual, almost hidden spot that's usually packed with locals. Think plastic chairs, outdoor tables, music playing and a constant flow of people coming in for a quick bite or drink. Feels more like a neighborhood hangout than a restaurant. I've been coming here for years and this is what I've learned, take it from a local. For a quick bite, alcapurrias are a MUST -- especially beef or crab. Also the "pastelillos" are amazing-- corn beef, chorizo, morcilla... Everything freshly made to order. Now, if you want to sit down and enjoy an authentic Puerto Rican meal, here are some of my favorites: chuletas fritas, chicharrones de pollo, bistec encebollado and carne frita-- of course with a side of rice and beans or tostones for the win. Bottom line: you come here for flavor and authenticity, not comfort. Enjoy
This place is famous in the area for the BEST ALCAPURRIAS. I came to La Placita on Sunday night so it wasn't crazy busy but I was so lucky I got a table outside with the awning due to the light rain. The music from outside and the people dancing in the rain was so nostalgic. First time diner and didn't even realize I had this restaurant as one of my places to visit until the next day lol I tried multiply different alcapurrias which just blew my mind. You could choose the filling inside and they make it fresh upon ordering. Two per order which was great for me lol one to eat one to go. The beef and shrimp were delish but my absolute favorite was the bacalou alcapurria because I've never tried it before the flavor profile was everything and they're not small either. I'm so thankful they were not being cheap with their ingredients.

The alcapurria itself was flavorful, but the meat filling lacked seasoning and wasn't as tasty as I hoped. Overall, a decent experience, but I think the food could be better. But I will still recommend everyone taste is different Update: I originally gave this place 3 stars because the service was good and the atmosphere was nice, though I found the food just okay. Unfortunately, the next morning I woke up with food poisoning, and this was the last place I had eaten. I can't say with 100% certainty it came from here, but I felt it was important to update my review and share my experience.
This was my favorite place during my visit. We waited 5-10 mins for a table. The food took a while to come out but honestly I didn't care because when the food did come out I was in love. I tried two different alcapurrias jueyes (crab) and ground beef. They were huge the ones I have eaten In the states did not compare in size or flavor. The pasteles were my favorite thing ever. Flavorful and it reminded me of my grandmas pasteles. The yautia mash was perfect. The masitas dorado were delish and my husband loved his carne frita. I also had the Bayamón mule. Soooo good. This place really is a little gem in Santurce
I came to PR for the Bas Bunny concert and wanted to get away from the tourist food and into something local. This spot did not disappoint. Fresh juices and Agua de coco. Amazing alcapurrias (ours was unique with some corned beef). Great mallorcas and other traditional breakfast plates. The place isn't big so get there early before it fills up. They even have d a few outside tables. The staff is friendly and food is very reasonably priced. It's right across from el Mercado where you can stop in and get some fresh fruits to take with you and maybe even a mavi. I highly recommend!
If you want true authentic Puerto Rican cuisine that tastes like a home cooked meal- this is your place. We went there at night for dinner and didn't have to wait long for a table. We sat outside instead of inside. The service was great and the food was finger licking good. I ordered the beef stew and practically licked the plate dry!

My friend and I had been looking for alcapurrias since we landed so decided we would start our Saturday by finding some. This place is small but feels authentic. We got lucky and that we got there early enough that there was a table for us. We started with the corn beef, alcapurria. It was huge. The corn beef was perfectly flavored. It was absolutely delicious. We also had their Mallorca sandwich and it was toasted to perfection. Everything came out super hot and fresh. So glad we came across this place and I would definitely come back
Tried La Alcapurria Quema in San Juan and it definitely lived up to the hype. I had the corned beef alcapurria -- a little hot, but so flavorful and delicious. I paired it with the octopus salad, which was fresh and balanced things out nicely. The wait was long, but totally worth it for a tasty local snack. Great spot to experience Puerto Rican street food done right!
I came here late night on a weekend after a music event in Santurce. The place was pretty crowded when I went, it being in La Placita. But very soon it got quiet as the patrons slowly moved out. I had Maria for a drink. It had Don Q Liquer, passion fruit juice and Lemon. The drink was tropical and refreshing. I wanted to try some new items for me on the menu and ordered Alcapuria(fish) and Majado De Viandas(Mashed Yams and Taro Root). It ended up being a great combination because Majado was filling and Alcapuria was crispy. The staff was nice. I was able to manage with my little spanish skills. The service was relatively quick. Music wasn't too loud. My only crib is that like many of the places in Puerto Rican(especially touristy places), they don't mention the price of the mixed drinks on the menu. So, make sure you ask and get it confirmed. I felt like they charged me a different price than what they told me but it could be a miscommunication and I limited myself to just one drink that night, so, I didn't make it a scene. I ended up giving them the benefit of doubt but please make sure you ask the price before you order.

Look, were we at an alcapurria spot ordering pastelillos? Yes. Do we regret it? Absolutely not. We got one each of vegetariano, cebolla y queso, pollo, and guayaba con queso. The vegetariano was mid, but the other three? No complaints. But honestly, the food is only part of the story here. The vibe is everything. Salsa playing, high energy, warm service. We rolled in late and hungry, looking for sweet refuge from La Placita crowds, and they welcomed us like we belonged there. The music started out mixed, but at some point it shifted to Contra La Corriente front to back. We were enjoying our pastelillos, singing along to No Me Conoces, minding our own business when... el apagón. Not the whole Placita, just a couple spots including this one. The staff didn't miss a beat. Flashlights came out, mood lighting appeared, and nobody rushed us. We finished our food. We paid. We left happy. 5 stars because some experiences are bigger than the sum of their parts. This was one of them. read more

uch a gem!! We came here after the airport and needed a fritura asap! They were huge and super flavorful ! Especially with the mayo ketchup. I got una de jueyes (crab) as well as a caramelized onion empanada y que rico!! read more

Had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated since this spot is small. It was a bustling midweek early afternoon and based on my experience is due to the delicious food. Service was fast, the ambiance was simple and food was inexpensive and tasty. read more

The Maria and the Mule, drink after drink was a hit. If you're looking here, youre likely looking for a bar vibe, but if you wamt surpringly great food, this is it here. The namesake I had with beef. Pique and mayoketchu came without request and one easily complimented the other. Masterful at their craft at frituras, you can't go wrong with alcapurrias. The Carne Guisa, the potatoes, carrots, broth, unbelievable. This is being compared to one of my favorite places in NY (I won't name here, so peep reviews). Pro tip, get mofongo, leave some in the broth, leave some in the carne guisa and let it soak everything up. Flavor explosion. If you're brave, add some piqhe for unique island taste. Easily one of my new favorite places in placita! Will be back! read more
Chill spot near La Placita that we stumbled upon for dinner. We tried the Alcapurria with ground beef but didn't feel it was seasoned at all. The drink, Maria was so good. The chicharrones de pollo were also very tasty! We sat at the bar as it was crowded, and many people seated at tables that came in after us got their food before us. The food here was phenomenal, estilo casero.. aka the Puerto Rican mom you didn't know you had is cooking for you. The place is quaint but the taste is huge and on point! Great drinks and food, and good service. We had the seafood platter with fried fish, ceviche, tostones and sweet plantains. My favorites were the Alcapurria de bacalalo and the pastelillo de queso y guayaba. read more
What's there not to love! The best food in the world, amazing and friendly staff, service so fast it's unbelievable, the best music playing, being allowed to bring in drinks from other bars, this was the best time I had in Puerto Rico! Our server said he lived in Brooklyn for some part of time and had a sister or cousin that lived near me in Jersey and we shared the best stories of the tristate area, it really felt like he was a childhood friend! I will remember this restaurant for the rest of my life! I want to say this was beef with onions and a ground beef alcapurria but it could honestly be chicken, me and my boyfriend ended up eating so much food and I couldn't keep track. Everything was the bombbb and a total value for money. Thank you so much!!! I can't wait to be back! Just as a heads up, it is really busy, so we did spin the block for a bit because la placita is a move always, and then came back a half hour later around 10 pm! read more

This spot was really good! We got lunch here and everything was really great. The waitstaff were really attentive and answered our questions and even recommended the carne frita to me since my original choice wasn't available. The wait for the food wasn't long at all, we got our Alcapurrias and Pastelillos relatively quickly first, and our food came out shortly afterwards. Everything we ordered was delicious, with the flavors being on point. The green hot sauce they provided us was also really delicious! The portion sizes are also generous and I ended up taking my food to go as well as the alcapurrias and pastelillos. However, the food is best when eaten fresh! I definitely recommend this spot, I also noticed they are open fairly late and early, so it'd be a great spot to grab a snack or meal prior or after hanging out in La Placita de Santurce. read more

This is a great example that a friendly waitstaff made a huge difference to a great experience. This restaurant is small and with 2 waitstaff and the restaurant was packed; so he already told us the service and food would be slow when we first arrived. The food came out 10/15mins after we ordered, so it wasn't that slow that we expected. We ordered bbq ribs and alcapurria with cod fish. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. The vibe was great. I want to go back at night in this neighborhood. read more
Great little restaurant in La Placitas area of San Juan. We wanted empanadas and we got empanadas! The selection of the type of empanadas was amazing. And and they're not small! Me and my partner split 4 empanadas and an order of tostones. We were beyond full but ate every bit of it! We ordered the Chicken, Beef and Cheddar, Rabbit with Bola Cheese, and Corned Beef Empanadas. Corned Beef! I couldn't believe I saw that. I LOVED it! It was my favorite one. They give you a hot sauce and a ketchup and may sauce for the tostones. The tostones were beautiful and salty and delicious. They were a perfect side to my already fried meal that I thoroughly enjoyed. There is some big energy there, especially since it's in the party part of La Placitas, but it's around all the other restaurants. It's a fun vibe, the servers are great (we had Anthony and he was awesome) and it was just so damn cool. read more

Grandmother's cooking! Traditional Piña coladas were on point. We've had mofongo around the island is this was by far the best. Bring your granma, she will not be disappointed. The restaurant on Yelp we were going to go to was closed so our driver took us here and said this is where the locals eat. It's was his favorite. We agree too! read more
