Just around the block from our hotel, we decided to try Waiter's for dinner. The service was good. When we first entered the restaurant, there weren't any other patrons. As it got busier, it took the waiter more time to get to us. The restaurant was very casual and comfortable. The temperature was cool inside with the air conditioning. Sadly they did not have the appetizer we had hoped to try. They made it up to us with a complementary dessert. The coconut flan was delicious. We shared a skirt steak rice and fried pork Mofongo. This spot was an easy walk from the Hilton where we're staying. They sat us on the patio, which was a bit empty as it only had 2 tables and not much decor. While the waiter was nice, the service was incredibly slow in ordering our food and waiting for our food. We started with the Gouda and guava bites, which were a tad underwhelming as it was basically cubed cheese- the sauce was good though. Best meal I had in San Juan! The Paella Jibara (meat paella) was delicious and the side of beans recommended by the bartender was surprisingly flavorful. Don't just pay, check your itemized bill first! When it came time to pay, the bill seemed a little high but I gave my credit card anyone. Before I left, I ran the numbers in my head and it was high. We just got back from a week in beautiful Puerto Rico and I gotta say This had to be one of the best meals we ate while We were there. This place doesn't look like much from the outside But The food makes up for it in a big way. Started with the soup of the day. It was a vegetable soup with shredded pork and shredded chicken Which was so big in flavor It tasted like somebody's grandmother made it in the kitchen. Lots of love I can tell. The Gouda cheese fritters were made even better with the fruity guava sauce. We were told the Mofongo is some of the best on the island, it did not disappoint. This place is so good that I came here twice on a week trip. It's a fairly intimate restaurant and there seems to always be a wait especially on the weekends, but they have both indoor and outside seating. The service was good and the food is delicious! The ingredients were straightforward, but the flavors were outstanding and authentic. The fish ceviche was balanced just right and came with tostones. My favorite was the skirt steak, but the mofongo was one of the best I had while in PR. I've eaten my fair share of mofongo and honestly the Creole sauce here makes it so much better. We've been here twice in two days. The staff is always friendly and have suggestions if you don't know what you want. Juan the bartender is awesome with the drinks. I'm hesitant to write a review because people will come! I've been told on the weekends you can't get in this place, so apparently word is already out. To take simple ingredients and transform them into something delectable is pure magic. I ordered stuffed avocado with grouper in garlic sauce, cheese flan for dessert, and their version of a Hurricane. This place is not what it seems like it is at all from the outside. From the outside it looks like a diner, but inside it's a really cute, chic restaurant. Service was exceptional. The food itself was mid tier. We got the meat paella and beef empanadas. I'd say pretty standard for both dishes, nothing super standout but not bad. The service on the other hand was not great. We went around 9pm and there were a couple other guests. Our food took an hour to come out, hence the three stars. If you don't mind waiting that long, this may not bother you. We're staying at the Hilton Garden Inn Condado and this is about an 8 minute walk. It was a warm night so we opted for an inside table where the temperature was perfect for me. I saw a few tiktoks mentioning this place and we ordered the skirt steak rice and an avocado salad. Both dishes were huge to share between my husband and I. The avocado on the salad was the biggest freshest avocado we've ever had. When I tasted the rice I was blown away. The flavor of the rice was perfection and the skirt steak was tender and perfectly cooked. The plantains were a great sweet spot. It was very similar to a Filipino turon without the wrapper. Juan was a total delight he made us feel at home and ready to order the whole menu. We loved that we got to sit outside and enjoy the rain while listening to music. The food was good. I wouldn't recommend the snapper fritters extremely greasy and didnt have a lot of taste. We ordered the mussels as well they were cooked to long but the sauce was out of this world. We decided to try the special which was an avocado stuffed with seafood over mashed potatoes. Our entree was delicious but again the seafood was extremely overcooked. This is a new type of review for me, since I am going to relay both good and bad aspects of the visit which balance out to an "OK" rating from me. First let's address the premises themselves; the restaurant looks very nice from the outside and the inside. It is clean and well appointed. However the space has 3 levels and the risers are pretty steep (not recommended for someone with mobility issues). We were originally supposed to be a part of 11, and right off the bat the gentleman who greeted us at the door admonished us that the place is "small" and they don't do large tables* (*see later on). He offered the initial 4 of us a table and then to separate the others in 2 other tables. The rest of the party was still headed to the restaurant so we agreed. We 4 were seated, and our orders were taken. So good so far. When the rest of our party arrived, (which had dwindled from 7 to 5), there was confusion at the door since they had planned for a 3-person and 4-person table but apparently could not accomodate a 5-person table... until they were turned away for wearing "bathing suits" which was against their "dress code". Yes three ladies were wearing swim suits but they had covered up with wraps which is why they were late to begin with. And mind you - this is a beachfront hotel strip. Not wanting to spoil our night they went off and found another restaurant. Meanwhile, we were surprised to see a fairly LARGE table in the level adjacent to where we were seated. Hmmm.... ENOUGH about that, now on to the FOOD. I was very excited to see arroz con gandules on the menu (mamposteao style) along with alcapurrias. I ordered plantain-breaded shrimp with the mamposteao and alcapurrias for the table. The alcapurrias were a bit of a disappointment for us, as we very much enjoyed the "basic" style using yuca for the masa while the ones here were made with a more eclectic mix (I'm guessing plantain and taro based on the taste). It's a matter of preference of course, but for our table (we had enjoyed the yuca ones the previous night) it was a disappointment. We did order beef empanadas and those were finger-licking delicious. Main course is where I really strike down the rating. My shrimp was delicious, but the rice was very, very oversalted. I thought maybe it was just me but another plate at the table had rice in it, and he too found it oversalted. Worse than that... I have eaten my fair share of arroz con gandules, and this by far was the worst version that I have ever eaten. The ratio of gandules to rice was waaaay off and it was ladden with onions and cilantro that just added to the offputting potency of the salt in the rice. In fact there was a bed of mashed potatoes for the shrimp on my plate, and THAT was oversalted as well! On the good side: the other 2 people had; a hamburger with fries, and tamarind pork medallions, and those dishes were absolutely delicious. I tasted the pork and it was cooked perfectly - MOIST which is what you want in pork. I would say maybe it lacked salt, but that's probably because my palatte was salty from my rice. We also ordered flavored margaritas and they were ON POINT. Absolutely delicious. So there you are - both good and bad. Half our party was seated, half was turned away. Half of our meals were good, and half were left half-uneaten. Our drinks were all good. If you're considering this place; A) make sure you're dressed nice, and B) your plate will either be very good or very salty. read more

The food outshines them all The location is down the street from LA Concha, which is where we stayed. I was frustrated the entire time I was in pierto Rico due to the food. Our reservation was for an outside table. That was a mistake. It's small, lots of people vaping and has a nasty hotness to it from an outside vent. Was there a table inside? Given that there are only 7 tables inside it was a big ask. At first, no. But after 5 mins we were moved to inside and then we relaxed and discovered the charms in this hole in the wall the place. It's first the drinks. Big and full of the good stuff. And affordable too. And the empanadas were so good. Three big ones. We brought one back to the hotel. The highlight though was a special. A whole red snapper fried to perfection. It had so much meat on the bones I almost couldn't finish it. Almost. It came with just a simple dressed salad but that's all it needed with fish so fresh. We enjoyed the flan for dessert too. Service was great and. Friendly. A type of local place that shouldn't be looked over. Inside is simple. But air conditioned and fine.
