I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. The line wasn't too busy when we went, we waited about 20 minutes to be seated, which wasn't bad at all. But, we were told it can get long. Poutine is their main staple in this joint from the plain classique to many other offerings with various toppings from hot dogs to ground beef to chicken and various vegetables. La Banquise is the first poutine I tried in Montreal around 10 years ago and at that time it was the one-and-only best poutine in Montreal and remained that way for years until I recently found Romados this year (my personal favorite). This classic poutine restaurant is still the best (tied for first place), always packed (literally always, since it's open 24/7) and certainly has the most variety and creativity for poutine. You'll find tons of different options and I'm eager to try them all! If you're not feeling like Gravy-infused fries with Cheese Curds and crispy fries, there are also tons of other classic diner options; hot dogs, burgers, onion rings, BLTs, etc., but while those are solid options, they end up being the sideshows. The main attraction is definitely the poutine. My personal favorite is the slow-roasted Pulled Pork poutine. It comes with a heaping of sour cream and a sweet bbq sauce. Even after you've somehow managed to eat the whole thing, it will leave you wanting more and you might dream about it and crave it as well (I know I am right now!). I reccommend sharing it unless you are a poutine expert or haven't eaten all day. The regular size and large are similar sizes (both hulking portions) and it might be more accurate to name them "huge" and "more huge". I also love the smoked meat poutine (the one with pickles and coleslaw), but I usually default to the Pulled Pork one, as that one is the best! The service is excellent and my server was fast/attentive for being so busy. The atmosphere is loud and it is very casual--great for a large party as they have big tables. If it is packed, don't be scared away, somehow they manage to make the wait time not so bad--maybe because the food is made so fast and fresh. It almost goes without saying, but the star of the menu is poutine - so many poutines in a variety of flavor combinations. While there are a few other items on the menu, we were there for poutine - and judging by what was on the surrounding tables, so was everyone else. The selection is almost overwhelming, but I ultimately went with the La Savoyarde. In addition to the standard ingredients, this contained bacon, onion, Swiss cheese, and sour cream. The dish was good - fries were crispy, and the extras worked well with each other. I was especially impressed with the bacon as the flavor was definitely there but it didn't overpower any of the other ingredients. We arrived around 12:30, so sure enough there was a line. We ended up trying the La Bacon and La Fred Caillou (Fred Flintstone). Having only had poutine in Vancouver, I wasn't expecting the poutine to be significantly better. But it was. Fries were crispy and not too oily. With all the gravy, cheese curds and toppings, it could have too salty, but it was actually really well balanced. We shared two regular sizes, which is enough to get a good taste between 4 people. But looking back, I would have gladly ordered the large plates because it was so good. Service was good enough. As Montreal's we know that there's better Putin's out there this is a tourist trap and people like to recommend it because they're open super late and there's different varieties you can get. I'm unsure how one could finish the whole plate by themselves. And second, I'm glad I ordered one with vegetables as I could see it getting dense. I was pretty surprised by this as I had originally believed that the fries would go stale quickly as too many items would sit on top of it. I didn't care much for the cheese curds; they tasted like mozarella string cheese.
