We were out walking around old Montreal when we all decided we were hungry for dinner. It was a beautiful night so we looked for a nice quiet place to eat outside. We found La Baraque, checked out the menu and decided that was the right place for us. We sat outside and ordered drinks. Our server was fantastic. The kids both ordered poutine (one with cheese and bacon and the other had chicken). The hubby ordered a smoked meat sandwich. I ate bites of everyone's meals. Everything was very good. We had poutine, pizza, wings, beer, and Coke at La Baraque du Vieux St-Vincent. I thought this restaurant was A-OK. It's located in the heart of Old Montreal on Rue Saint Vincent, which was pedestrian-only during our visit. The weather was nice and the patio was the place to be. If you're into old-school European al fresco dining, La Baraque is one of several good options in Old Montreal. Poutine in the heart of Old Montreal sounds pretty authentic to me. This place is good for groups. We had a group of seven and showed up around 3:30pm on a Saturday. Old Montreal, as usual, was packed. The patio at La Baraque was no exception. However, the staff was nice and made room for us. There were two guys running the show outside and they were friendly. I think the patio was filled mostly with tourists, like us, and the staff would hand out menus on the street to passers-by, inviting them in. Service was generally fine, but I think it could've been better as these guys appeared to be spread a little thin. La Baraque sells two of the foods Montreal is known for: smoked meat and poutine. They offer two kinds of smoked meat sandwiches, a smoked meat club for $19.50 and a regular smoked meat sandwich for $17.50. They feature eight kinds of poutine, priced at $9.49 for classic poutine to $15.99 for their special version called "Poutine La Baraque." It comes with smoked meat, bacon, and grilled vegetables along with the customary fries, cheese curds, and gravy. Aside from that, they seem to sell standard pub grub like burgers, sandwiches, salads, pizza, wings, and nachos. The drink menu is extensive (full bar) and they serve espresso and espresso-based coffee drinks too. Here's what we ordered, food-wise (all prices Canadian): * Quebec poutine ($12.99) - French fries, bacon, cheese curds and gravy * Montreal poutine ($12.99) - French fries, smoked meat, cheese curds and gravy * Italian poutine ($10.99) - French fries, cheese curds, and meat sauce * Chicken wings (9 for $9.99) * Pepperoni pizza ($13.99) - 10 inches, served 11am-12am In general, I thought the food was fine. We had just finished jet boating with Saute-Moutons nearby and this hit the spot for a late lunch. The food was heavy, but we knew that before choosing to eat here. I liked the variety of poutines offered and I enjoyed all three that we ordered. The poutines were served piping hot and the portions sizes were generous. Of the poutines I tried, my favorite was the Montreal poutine. If you order the Montreal poutine, you can kill two birds with one stone and try poutine and smoked meat at the same time. It's a combination that works, actually. The fries across all the poutines were fairly standard. Thick, hot, and crispy. While the smoked meat wasn't as good as Schwartz's (the best), it was good enough and there was plenty of it. The fries were just smothered in that savory, thinly-sliced brisket. My second favorite poutine was the Quebec poutine. The bacon was chopped into bits, almost like bacon bits, but bigger. The Italian poutine was my least favorite, but still, not bad. It came topped with slices of sausage (hot dog) and a meat sauce (not gravy). The sliced sausage was par for the course. Appetizing texture and flavor. The meat sauce was thick and kind of goopy. Across all poutines, the cheese curds were served in sizable cubes or clumps and were, for the most part, tasty and satisfying. The pizza and wings, while nothing to write home about, were quickly devoured. The pizza had a decently thick crust and the wings were crispy. My can of Coke ($3), served with a plastic Boreale cup of ice, was cold and refreshing. Our patio chairs sat low relative to the height of our tables. While I wouldn't consider this a top recommendation in Old Montreal, it's certainly not a bad place to stop for a quick bite and drink. read more

Very happy I came across this place while exploring the old city. It's just off the main drag so the outdoor seating is perfect for those avoiding the crush of the crowds and looking for some (relative) peace and quiet. The poutine was very good and reasonably priced. The owner of the place was very personable and made the lunch that much more enjoyable with this witty small talk. We were there last week on our last day in Montreal. After a week of amazing food, my companion was given boxed macaroni and cheese for her entree - think Velveeta - and I was given a "Greek" salad instead of the chef salad I ordered - with bottled Italian dressing all over it. The whole thing was just disgusting. AND, when the "chef" admitted the error, I was still charged for the wrong salad I didn't eat. The server was really sweet and it wasn't her fault - but I don't recommend anyone go to this place. It's terrible. read more

I was looking for a place for a quick bite to eat during my first visit to Montréal with my boyfriend. After realizing that most restaurants close early during the winter, meaning around 8:00 PM we settled for dinner in the tourist area and since I have never tried poutine we stepped into here. It was a cold and snowy night, Montréal by my impression must close early and so we were the only customers. Despite that, our server was attentive and I had a great poutine - it looked like a small portion at first but I soon realized I could barely finish it. I had the original poutine with gravy, cheese curds, and some ham and boyfriend had the chicken poutine - the food came out hot and we were in and out of there within an hour. If I could give this place a zero, I would. The waitress is mainly to blame. Everything was delayed, warm beers were served, she spilled one beer, then, later, she spilled a cup of water. Do not be fooled by the unpretentious exterior. It is worth your time. I had a luscious vegetarian omelette here. It also came with very fresh fruit and potatoes. It was far superior to the cardboard-quality veggie omelet (and less-than-fresh fruit) that I had the day prior at a Maggie Oaks. This is the worst place in all of Montreal. Our server spilled a beer on me and then tried to serve it to my friend at the other table. I stumbled upon this spot after a long day in Montreal. We sat ourselves because no one was paying attention and it took about 20 minutes for someone to finally acknowledge us. We had to ask for menus and then when the waitress finally came over to take our order she seemed very rushed. 3 tables got sat after us and they seemed to having ok service. When we saw one of the tables that got sat after us get their food first we were a little confused. 35 minutes go by and all of the tables that got sat after us are eating their food so we tried to call over our waitress and she kept ignoring us. We get a hold of her 20 minutes later and then ask her how much longer for our food and she says, "what did you order again?" She had no idea what we ordered and never placed it into the computer. So after an hour of waiting for 3 sandwiches she finally decides to enter the order into the computer. During this whole time she never came up to us or check on our order. We got up and decided to leave and just pay for our drinks. Her excuse for this was it got busy. She never apologized either. My family and I came in here when the man outside the door persuaded us and told us it would be the best restaurant. We walked into the tiniest restaurant where people were nearly sitting on each other. My mother got the nachos and had to return them due to a piece of hair being in her food. I got the hamburger which was alright but nothing special for the price. The service was AWFUL. People were nearly forced to leave the restaurant when done their meal just because the man at the door was barging people inside. Everyone was rushed in order for new customers to come in. We finally got our bill and tipped 12% rather than 15% due to our dissatisfaction, the waitress ran over saying $2 of the tip was missing and that I needed to pay it in order to tip the chefs as well. Already furious, I gave her the $2 and ran out. I will never return here again. read more

Nice find! We found this place I. A side street in Old Montreal. We went in because we saw a sign for gluten free Poutine. We were pleasantly surprised. Good food, beer (no GF) and friendly waiter. We decided to go. Ack a few days later we were touring around again and stopped in for GF pizza and oh my deliciousness!! Again, great conversation. We were drawn in by the sign outside -- seemed to be decent prices and good-looking food. Our experience proved otherwise. The prices on the menu were higher than advertised and service was ridiculously slow. 20 minutes after my daughter and I were served we finally caught the waiter's attention to say that my husband's pizza was missing. We watched three other pizzas be served with no word. My husband finally stood up to leave money on the table and walk out and the server zipped over, promising that it was coming. He also brought the bill and offered to comp us the (overpriced) drinks -- making the pizza free. I foolishly signed the bill, he finally brought the pizza in a togo box, and we realized the 3 drinks totalled $9 (CAD) but the pizza cost $16! We left with pizza in hand (husband would rather eat on the street than stay there a second longer -- 90 minutes after we entered) and the waiter had the nerve to chase us down and ask for a tip.
