After spending a week eating street antojitos in CDMX, we went to La Bella Lulá for a quick dinner the night before our departure. They close at 7:00PM, and we got there about 6:20. The restaurant was empty except for us. We ordered quickly, and got our mains and an appetizer at the same time, in less than 5 minutes. Alarm bells in my head immediately went off and I should have listened. There is NO WAY that our dishes were freshly prepared. I ordered their version of chiles rellenos. The batter was soggy and the picadillo was just warm enough that I decided to eat rather than complain.
Huge mistake. I'm 100% certain our meals were microwaved, and that the food had been held at much lower temperatures than is advised to avoid food-borne illness, yet not refrigerated, either. Within 3 hours I was vomiting, and I had a 10AM flight to catch. There was no way I could travel the next morning. Between paying for a flight change, an extra night at the hotel, a missed day of work, and 3 times the amount of travel time it should have taken to get home (there were no Aeromexico seats available), this meal cost me about $1,000 US$.
Shame on you, La Bella Lulá! You know you were rushing us. You should never have served that food, and your kitchen staff either doesn't know, or ignored, basic safe food handling. I'd really like to be compensated for the misery and expense I endured after eating at your establishment.
