I have been out here in Pittsburgh for over a year, and have been on the search for decent Mexican food. La Bodega not only had tasty food, but it felt like being back in SoCal for a brief moment. The restaurant itself is not fancy. A few tables, an open grill, a cooler with sodas in glass bottles. As anyone from Southern California will tell you, that's exactly the vibe that announces that there's good authentic food around. I saw other reviews recommending their birria, and I'm joining them. It's fantastic. I ordered the quesobirria pizza. It's pretty big, definitely for sharing or saving for leftovers. Essentially it's a giant quesadilla filled with the birria fixings: barbacoa beef, onions, cheese, and consume for dipping. It's delicious. It's not super spicy, so throw in some Cholula if you want to kick it up. Pair it with a Mexican Coke or Jarrisco, and you will roll out very very happy. read more

Taco spot located in Southside! Cute interior. Quick service. Homemade tortillas you can tell they are good quality. They have tacos served the Ameri-way and the Mexi-way. I think the main difference is the American style has guac and the Mexican style is more street tacos style. I enjoyed the chicken tacos best! read more

Stopped in for something quick while on a friends bday bar crawl. The food came out fast, and it was pretty good. The carne asada taco and chicken burrito were good. There's not a lot of seating inside. That's not a huge deal since it's easy to get in and out quickly. The staff didn't let anyone use the bathrooms, so I had to go across the street to a bar while my boyfriend waited for our food. I really enjoyed this place. It's a fairly small operation with a couple of hard-working guys behind the counter serving up some pretty good tacos. They offer several different salsas and sides, and every last one of them was exactly aligned with the flavor profile I would expect. The salsa roja and salsa verde were well balanced, and the ranchero sauce was a nice option to have. All of them were both distinct and flavorful. The tacos themselves come in both "Mexi-" and "Ameri-" styles, with the American style getting some different/extra toppings (lettuce, pico, crema, etc.). Both styles were good, depending on what you're looking for. I highly recommend loading up either with one of their salsas. As a minor tip for the vegetarian tacos, I would recommend ordering the tacos without any rice. The tacos don't really need the rice: they already have a tortilla. read more

My friend and I stopped in here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We came in and checked out the menu. The staff were happy to answer any questions we had. I ordered an agua Fresca, chips and queso, and a chorizo taco. My friend ordered an agua Fresca and some tacos. The food was flavorful and fresh. The storefront itself wasn't too busy, which I appreciated. We sat by the window so we could people watch. Worst Mexican food I have ever eaten but I guess that's because I come from Arizona and NOTHING compares to the great Mexican & Sonoran tacos and Quesadillas you can get. $24 for 1 steak taco with sparse serving of meat. 1 small steak quesadilla and and order of chips with a Mexican Coke....never paid $6.50 for a Taco in my life & the exact same thing ANYWHERE in Arizona is $3....they also use white queso cheese which is horrible on the half uncooked chips they give you. Absolutely loved this hidden gem. I was looking for something new, and this was a hit. I love the variety and plan to go back to try more menu items. Tacos al pastor are my favorite so I had to try that first. This place is on the main drag, they're friendly and the food is delicious. Parking is hit or miss but it's not a deal breaker. Wow! What a mouthwatering experience! Had a late night craving for Mexican food and this was one of the only places open near my hotel. The vibes were a little sketch, but a more hole-in-the-wall place next to many bars. I can see this as spot people would crave after a fun night out. Service was quick and fast. From time of order to food in my hands, was less than 10 minutes! The employees were so incredibly kind despite it being late. The oaxaqueño was HUMONGOUS! Definitely heavy, but so incredibly filling. We couldn't finish both halves and will be eating it tomorrow as leftovers. The carne asada was phenomenal. 2 tacos the Mexi-Way just "melted" in my mouth. The limes were generous with 2 limes when most places just give 1 small one to squeeze on all the tacos. I was incredibly impressed by this boxes ability to make me full. It was just the right amount of everything to make it perfect! The chips were stale; however, I believe it's made from this morning so I can't be too upset about it. The salsa that came with the box was a little watery, but still was great. I came early hoping to get a parking space and I did just that. It was almost 5 p.m. and no one was in the place except me and one server. I was surprised that it was just one person there, but it was a Tuesday night. I got the vegetarian burrito and only waited a very short time to get it to go. I even mentioned to the server that I couldn't seem to find a good side, they said nothing. I just ordered the small guac which came to about 4 dollars. It comes in a container that you would see a sauce in, so very small portion. It also came with a chipotle sauce in a container, which turned out to taste really good. Overall, this taqueria was a delightful surprise. The service staff were incredibly hospitable, and the menu from the get-go gave off the same vibes as a so-cal taqueria: a small, simple menu with nothing too overdressed. Make sure to try your tacos the "Mexi-way" to get an authentic experience. For some strange reason, finding a taco in Pittsburgh served on a corn tortilla with onions, cilantro, and salsa and nothing else is surprisingly hard, and we were so happy that La Bodega offered this option. The barbacoa taco was properly made -- and again, most importantly, served on a corn tortilla with the overall flavor experience highlighting the meat. Despite the churros' caramel being a bit runny, the overall experience would have us coming back whenever we're missing a taste of so-cal tacos. Honestly not that great. I've had a lot better food in the area, but La Bodega isn't necessarily bad either. It's just underwhelming in my opinion. I tried their Ranchero burrito, the churros, and the horchata (rice based sweet drink). The Ranchero burrito was very strangely acidic. I didn't think it would be this lemony/limey. It also had way too much cilantro for my liking. Inside of the burrito, there was meat, fries, beans, onions, and rice. The rice was decently cooked and relatively good, as were the beans. I was not a huge fan of the meat. It was stringy and not flavorful. The rices were okay but got a bit soggy. I couldn't tell if there was cheese in there or not (if there was, definitely not enough). The outside was a bit soggy (some sort of white sauce, probably sour cream-based), and the price for the portion was too high. Would not recommend. The churros were decent, but did not strike me as particularly good. The texture was hard and a bit stale. They had a fair bit of sugar. The inside wasn't gooey and caramely as I had hoped. They serve it with house made dulce de leche, and while I thought that would be creamy and sweet, it was watery and mostly flavorless. My favorite part of the meal was probably the horchata. This was unique and quite good. The portion was great for the price. They did add too much ice for my liking, but the flavor was definitely good. Just the right amount of cinnamon and sweetness. A good drink for someone who doesn't want to be bombarded with sugar. All in all, the place isn't necessarily bad, it's just underwhelming. The flavors for the savory food were too acidic, and the churros were very meh. Portions didn't make up for the price. Would recommend other places over La Bodega. read more

Brightly painted Mexi-American food establishment with a few high top tables. Very friendly staff. Had a couple of tacos. You choose your style of Mexi-Way or Ameri-Way for the toppings and either corn or flour tortilla. The tacos were very well filled and so tasty. I have no idea how this joint has high ratings. I order delivery so this is on the food specifically. The corn tortillas are pretty horrendous, I thought there was something wrong with it, like plastic was pressed against it and burned. The barbacoa meat, was inedible as well, and dry, the flavor was suspicious at best. The Mexican burrito was mostly just a little spice flavored but couldn't distinguish anything else. I ordered delivery from here recently as it was one of the only places open at such a late hour. (Gotta love delayed international flights!) I tried the pastor and barbacoa tacos and was impressed overall. The portion (four tacos total) was generous enough for some leftovers the next day, and the textures and flavors were spot on for street-style tacos. Get them topped with cilantro/radish/onion for the most authentic experience. Everything held up well and was nicely packed for delivery.
