YES. Yes, yes, yes. This is the kind of place I want to be taken to when visiting another town. Friends who live outside Pittsburgh brought me and we spent several hours at this indoor-outdoor craft brewery. I tend towards lighter beers, and they had several great options for me (don't worry, there are plenty of darker beers and higher-alcohol-percentage brews; I just didn't order them). There are three or four bars, along with a stage and places for food trucks. The bars are all linked, so you can open a tab at one and it'll be available at the others as well. Super friendly service. I was there on a Saturday afternoon and the place was well-staffed with very cool employees. The atmosphere is nice, too, and I appreciated the poster on one wall explaining the meaning of "Grist House". You can bring dogs too! Some very nice dogs were present on this particular Saturday. Next time I'm coming through this way, I will definitely be stopping by again. * Note: it's a brewery, of course, but they do offer some wines and their own cocktail concoctions. read more

I don't have any breweries down on my list in the "to try" section for the Pittsburgh area. But sometimes these unresearched discoveries are pleasant ones when trying out the craft beer scene for a place and city where I haven't examined much of. Grist House is one of these breweries where it was one I haven't looked into at all prior to having one of their beers but the beer experience proved to be a positive one. The beer that I had was the Gristly Bear Brown. As hinted in the name this is a Brown Ale. I do like getting this type of beer from time to time and this particular one was a tasty and refreshing one. Flavor features to enjoy with this beer is maltiness, roastiness and a presence of coffee. The beer is smooth and has a dark color to it like what you'd expect from any Brown Ale. A nice start with the brewery and if I get the opportunity to try more of their beers in the future then I most certainly will! read more

A truly great brewery and a very special ambiance in Millvale! I've been a few times now and the energy is always good across the board. The space is cool, with varied seating and indoor-outdoor access, and I love that it's tucked away a bit so that the back patio feels private and separate from the bustling streets. The folks serving beer are always friendly and helpful, and I also love that they garner some awesome food trucks on a regular basis. And - very importantly - the beer is extremely delicious! I stopped by Grist House around 2pm for PizzaFest on Sunday. While it was crowded and tough to find an open seat, it wasn't overly crowded. The line to get a beer at the bar wasn't too long. While Grist House doesn't serve food, they usually have a food truck which was barbecue this time - I didn't try it because I was eating the pizza from PizzaFest. It's a pretty big space and lots of people bring their cute dogs which makes it fun! My summer beer of choice is a sour and they only had one sour on the list but it was delicious!! read more

When it comes to breweries, Grist House hits every one of my most important criteria...really good beer, aesthetically pleasing outdoor area, and availability of good food. Their outdoor seating area is really nicely done with a couple of fire pits. They had probably 16 beers to choose from, and a couple of different choices of several styles...maybe four or five sours, two or three hazy IPAs, etc. While they don't make their own food, their calendar of events makes it seem like there's always a food truck available. So while the neighborhood of Millvale isn't exactly a garden spot, the care that Grist House has taken in providing a solid beer lineup with an inviting patio area to enjoy the brews, I'll likely try to talk Mama into making the hour-long trip again. The Grist House experience has definitely been upgraded. The new building is great. There is so much more space and I love the nice big bar. It's beautiful inside. The deck outside is great as well with lots of seating and space. Somehow even with more space it does seem to get pretty crowded, especially on the weekends but it's definitely better with more space. I like that they now have all of the merchandise (shirts, hats, etc) and the cans in the corner so you can look at everything. Just grab what you would like and take it up to the bar to pay. You can also still order online to simply come in and pick up your order which is nice, especially if you don't want to miss a release. They seem to generally have a pretty good selection on tap though I wish they had a dark beer on more often but that's my personal taste. They definitely have variety though where everyone should be able to find something they like. This is definitely one of my favorite breweries in Pittsburgh. It's a nice place to go hang out with a group and they typically have food trucks (plus Iron Born right around the corner). Most often we stop by when I see the announcement of a good release, especially when they do a barrel aged stout. read more

Loved Gristhouse prior to football season bc it loves my dog! However, the place is even more since game day started for PSU games. It's always a good time and they have indoor and outdoor space with decent tvs to catch you favorite team. They don't serve food but typically have one or two food trucks and you can bring in outside food from any local eatery! Typically, the staff is a great time; although this past week I waited 30 minutes to order even though three bartenders looked and walked right by me (typically they say one minute or something to acknowledge you but not this week). I love the cozy atmosphere at Grist House! The fire pits were heated all around the outdoor area, and the Christmas decorations were up. Overall, the ambiance outside I think is a lot nicer than inside, but it was too cold for me to be out there this weekend (even with the fire pits). They prioritize having a lot of big tables, so it's a great spot to go with a group. While they don't serve food, they usually have a food truck on the premises & you can bring food in from other local restaurants as well. Grist House always has a wide variety of draft beer options, and they rotate quite frequently. Their cocktails are good too (they are currently featuring a pumpkin espresso martini - yum!). I've always been a fan of Grist House brewing. They have some good barrel aged stouts when they put them out. Also the IPA's are pretty solid. They seem to have a ton of sours as well which people love. I like them, but they don't like me (sours that is). Great outdoor space. I however at times get annoyed with some of the enormous dogs people bring. I have no issue with dogs, let me say that, but people sometimes bring massive dogs and are clueless to the fact that they are blocking doorways and things. It's also a Penn State brewery which is cool. They have firefest every year and that is a great time. Food trucks daily. Parking sucks, all street parking. read more

Is this the best brewery in Pittsburgh? That's up for discussion. I simply love this place. The last couple of times I have tried to go here they were closed on the days I was in town so the next time I visited I made sure to head over and check it out. I was pleasantly surprised at how busy they were on the night we went. I was smiling as I approached. They were having a clothes drive to benefit a local charity or charities which was very nice so there were several food trucks there and they also had a DJ. Everyone was smiling and happy and having a great time. Whoop Whoop!!! I also saw a lot of cute dogs too which is a plus. The setup of this brewery is top notch. Loved it! I had a great time! Their beer is amazing, the location is one of the best and most of the staff were great with the exception of one girl who was working the beer truck who from what some of my friends said is always a total b*tch, that sucks for business, but oh well. We noted that it was extremely loud which was mostly due to dogs barking/fighting. I was slightly surprised there wasn't a higher level of strictness from the staff about the dogs on site. Grist House is the place to be in the summer! I last visited in the winter when the main building was under renovation. Now, the deck, patio, and both indoor spaces are open. There is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy. My only complaint with Grist is their beer selection is very IPA heavy. However, they usually have 1-2 on the lighter side (pilsner, wheat, etc) plus a cider and cocktails. The menu is posted on an electronic board but it would be helpful to have paper menus with the beer descriptions. Luckily, the bartender was very knowledgeable and helped describe the wheat as ginger and lemongrass and I was sold. The wheat was crisp and flavorful. The patio is dog friendly which can be a pro/con. They also usually have a good truck. read more

Grist House is hands down one of my favorite breweries! I have been a frequent customer for years and love that there is now a second location I can go to for some of my favorite beers. Years ago, I remember the first Grist House location opening in Millvale and loving it. I was SO HAPPY when I learned there would be a closer location to where I live opening up! Ever since the Collier location opened I have been visiting for beer pick-ups frequently. Some of our favorite beers include the shaman series beers, any of the dessert sours especially the Velvet Vortex, and many of their IPAs. Battle Snake and Space Cactus might be two of the best, in my opinion. Recently we tried the Pineapple Upside Down dessert sour and it tasted just like Pineapple Upside Down cake! Truly a great summer beer to sip on. I look forward to seeing what Grist House comes out with in the future and many more good beers! read more

Went to Grist House for a teacher appreciation event. I was a little hesitant with the incoming snowstorm, but thought I'd go early and leave early. They opened at 12 and I arrived at 12:15-already a great crowd! They have an outdoor space to order from a beer truck and there are fire pits with tons of seating. Then there's the kind of indoor/outdoor patio. They had plastic hanging down to keep wind from getting in and then there is the indoor space with tables and barstools. When you come in, they conveniently have an order here sign for everyone to place orders. Although they do not serve food, they have a food truck(s) regularly. Today was Pittsburgh Tortas. Then, even more conveniently, the bartender provided us a scan code that had the local food places that would deliver. I loved that they were supporting the other small businesses of Millvale. Most importantly, if you are going to a brewery you wanna know, Yes! The beer was great! I don't think I tasted one I didn't like in my flight of beers and the staff was super friendly. read more

This is our favorite brewery in Pittsburgh. We have been to a lot and this has the best beer. The lineup changes a lot but you can always find something that you will like no matter what type of craft beer you are into. One of our favorites is the Hazedelic and that one does stay on tap often. Even if the beer that you were looking for isn't available you can still find a beer that you will start to love right away. I'm not exaggerating either. Finding parking in Millville isn't the easiest but it not too hard if you drive around. There is a parking lot across from the brewery that we do find parking most of the time but if we don't we can find street parking which isn't that far away. They are building a new faculty in their lot that hopefully will be ready in time for the winter. This place is great but when gets cold out we don't stop by as often. They have the fire pits for outside but it can still be a little too cold for us inside . Hopefully this new building will provide better warmth for the colder months. It can get busy here on the weekends and College football games so if you can visit on the weeknights when they are open that is a good time to come. Even though as a disabled retired veteran I use a power wheelchair, I don't consider myself handicapped. I'm more like handi capable. I'm that guy that would bave played wheelchair basketball or wheelchair skiied if I was younger. I appreciate a minimum of fuss, but I do like the people and places that take a little effort in making things easier for people like me. This place is perfect and is very easy to negotiate. It is large and open, with indoor and outside spaces filled with picnic tables and tall window bar stools at a rail. It is easy to find a spot where you can feel comfortable. My visit was on a cold, blustery fall day, and I appreciated that there were pellet heaters spaced out over the outside areas. The inside area is large, but there is a large deck and a patio area below. I found a good spot on the deck and enjoyed a couple of visits from friendly dogs. There are a few things I really enjoy; dog friendly, nice people and attentive staff. This place is the whole package. I was greeted by a bartender, John, upon arriving and he was helpful and very courteous. Beyond that, he seems well versed with answers to any question you might have. He gave me an extensive beer menu and explained that you get 5 pours of about 5 ounces each. I've been a beer drinker for many years and sampled many flights, from the Rocky Mountains to local craft breweries. Only one beer was excluded from the tasting menu, a heavy Russian porter that I probably wouldn't have chosen anyway. John made some suggestions and I chose 3 and left the other 2 choices to him. The beer sampler is served in small snifters and held on a small palate. John wrote the name of each beer on the palate in grease pen so that I not only knew the names, but I could make comparisons. He followed me to my choice of tables and set my samples within easy reach. He was also quick to accomodate my request for a copy of the menu so that I had more information about each selection. The effect was festive, even if the place was mostly empty. There was a private party below on and in a patio area. There were 2 other tables occupied on the deck where I was sitting, and both had dogs and seemed to really be enjoying themselves. There were a good mix of older and younger people and they interacted even though it was clear that they did not know each other beforehand. The place seems to bring out personal social contact, and I don't recall seeing a single person diving headfirst into their phones. This place seems to encourage face to face personal connections, something severely lacking in the world today. The beers were good and interesting. I chose a random sampling of different types to get more of a well rounded idea of the brews offered. I liked them all in different ways. The Autumn Sugar is a sour dessert brew, and it is very sour. The description is a little misleading, since with the inclusion of vanilla and cinnamon, you could expect a certain sweet note, but the sour flavor is the most prominent. The Double Vice is a coffee infused dark porter and lives up to the title. It is a dark beer, heavy, and does have a dark chocolate type of finish. In my opinion, this is more the dessert type of beer, since I believe it would match perfectly with a rich chocolate cake. The Galactic Ghost has some fruity notes to it, but I found it to be almost a Pittsburgh type of beer. Not in the Iron City kind of way, but more like the old Duke that was kind of fresh and clean in the pilsner style. I didn't get as much of the orange peel or melon description that is included in the menu, but I thought it was good. The Clean Line Citro was probably my 2nd favorite. It is described as including Centennial and Waimea, which gave me no idea what to expect. In both cases, these are special hops added to certain beers that give them a distinct flavor, one from Washington state and one from New Zealand. My favorite was the Krisp. It is listed as almond and cracker flavor and was recommended by John as a palate cleanser. It did work for that between other sips, but it stood on it's own. I liked this one the best because it was light and refreshing and just seemed to pair perfectly with the day. Everything included; the space layout, the staff well versed and helpful and the guests a nice mix of friendly people make this place a winner along every line. I didn't notice it at first, but on my way out I saw that there was a food truck right at the curb. It looked and smelled good and I'd like to try it the next time around. Other reviews mention that you also could bring in outside food. I wasn't sure about the location, since it is on a residential narrow cobblestone street, but it works. If you're a beer drinker, or just appreciate a great venue, you should check it out. read more

Had the pleasure of visiting Grist over the weekend and I love the new space that Grist House constructed, such great open space and bar! Once you walk in, to the left you have the apparel and to-go cans section. There are plenty of tables right near the door and the bar has plenty of seating. The taproom menu is on large monitors and lists the current beer and cocktail selections. The space is mostly indoors with two openings to get that fresh air flowing through the place. Plenty of TV's as well to watch your college or NFL games. Service was excellent - they were professional, fast, and friendly. Want to include this information too - the men's bathroom was looking fresh and clean. Also for those dad's you can bring your baby and change them in the men's bathroom - thanks to Grist for installing a changing table! There were two food trucks rotating at Grist when I was there, just need to check the website to see what food trucks are showing up. This was only our second time at grist house, but it was the first time we came when the weather was warm. I love how many beers are on tap. There are multiple IPAs, sours, etc. so there are always multiple beers we are excited to try. They have a ton of outdoor seating and a couple tables inside. They are currently building another indoor portion, but it's not open yet. They have two separate bars which is nice. If you open a tab it works at both bars, so if the line is long at one you can just order at the other. It seems like there is always a food truck outside as well.
