Who is supportive and ready to answer your questions to their best knowledge. My initial doctor was brilliant Dt. Tang, REALLY BRILLIANT, who I had to mention, (he works with Leavey Cancer Center) but after my cancer went into remission my insurance company decided that I need to be with different oncologist (I'll never understand how this insurance bureaucrats work) The Oncology Institute in Northridge (which is across the Leavey Cancer Center by the way lol) is specializing in, yes- oncology. The office has 4 doctors, they all have impressive backgrounds. Dr. Paul La Porte, is my doctor, who is very knowledgeable and caring, although sometimes can comes across as little cocky like some doctors are lol, but overall knowledgeable and caring, in my experience. It is very crucial to have a good relationship and great level of comfort with your oncologist, and I believe with your doctors in general. I was very nervous when I had to (well more like forced to) change my oncologist. But after meeting Dr. La Porte, I felt that I can rest assure that I am still in good hands. The office is clean and nice. The staff is polite. You come in, sign in and wait. Chairs now are comfortably set up so people are not in each other's face, which is very important when you are already vulnerable and more susceptible to COVID virus, fu and cold, since you are immunocompromised. Check up rooms are clean and cozy, with nice art work hanging on the walls, which is a nice destruction, not letting you focus only on medical information, and trust me you have lots of that, comes with the condition. Also, what I like about Dr. La Porte is he is friendly, easy to talk to, does answer his texts and emails, if I have any questions or concerns. He does provide me with my test results ahead of my appointment time when applicable, so If I have questions I'll have time to prepare and ask. My own experience here is good, but the waiting time is what makes me give them 3 stars. I do not wish upon anyone to hear those words ever, and may you stay Blessed. But if you ever hear that, please do not loose hope, do not stop fighting, believe, stay strong and positive and with the help of great oncologists, their team, your friends and family, you are a winner. At 8:30 AM the office officially opened and I was already caller number 26. I made two calls over two days, both with 20-minute+ on hold times -- after which I had to hang up to return to work -- and one 45 minute hold time on the third day that ended in someone answering the phone to tell me the schedulers had gone to lunch. Call back later. He was unmoved by my outrage. A friend noticed that the institute's website had a link for setting up appointments. I followed the directions, uploaded my insurance card, downloaded the app, and was given a confirmation including a date, a time, an oncologist's name (Dr. Bala Ganesh Gopurala) and even his photograph with APPOINTMENT BOOKED! in bold capital letters. A week later, I arrived for my appointment and was told (by a very indifferent receptionist who barely looked up from her computer) that I was not in the system. No appointment. Nothing. Dr. Gopurala had been at their Riverside office for months, she said. My name, my phone number, and my request for an appointment were logged into the system from my text request only, but when I asked why no one had contacted me after a week, she shrugged her shoulders. That's not an exaggeration -- she shrugged! Finally, the fuss we raised brought a compassionate doctor to the waiting room and she agreed to see me. She got the ball rolling by calling the breast cancer surgeon and reassured me that the website, the app download, and the IT department were not up to par. Ya think? After that, everything seemed to fall into place... until the institute called a couple of weeks later to say they needed to reschedule my appointment. I asked, "What appointment?" They had sent neither an email nor a text, and had not broached the subject of a follow up appointment at that point. I agreed to the reschedule, but once again I never received one email, text, nor voicemail confirmation for it. Near the end of December, City of Hope contacted me to ask why they had not been sent a referral for the radiation treatments that the oncologist had recommended. I gave the scheduler the institute's proper name, address, and the name of the oncologist who'd taken pity on me that day. City of Hope called right back to inform me that the Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation said I was not in their system! I immediately called my primary care physician and requested another oncology referral. On January 9, 2026, OIHI called again to confirm my January 12 appointment. Fascinating! An appointment with a clinic that has twice insisted I was not in their system? I told them to delete me. I was moving on. I understand that there are a lot of people in Los Angeles. I understand that clinics are understaffed and overworked. I understand that I am NOT the only person with cancer in the San Fernando Valley community. But a modicum of professional demeanor, efficiency and competency is the least any patient deserves. The very least one can ask is for a website that has up-to-date doctors and staff on its scheduling app and an IT department that checks its website for accuracy; that assures that there's a direct connection to the scheduling department. The very least one deserves is a return call within 24 to 48 business hours. The very least one deserves is an iota of compassion from the people who schedule the appointments. After a cancer diagnosis, you are already panicked. Often terrified. One cannot help but feel that every single minute is of the essence. All this to say that if you are referred to the Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation, BEWARE. Their behavior seems to indicate that they HOPE you'll catch on that your diagnosis is not their problem. Perhaps your poor man's health insurance makes them INNOVATE ways to get you to give up and go away. Or perhaps they simply don't give a crap -- I don't know which, but enter at your own risk. Becoming a patient at their clinic is nothing short of a crapshoot. And you might end up losing your dice.

We were referred to him after more than 20 medical visits in a single month. My immunosuppressed husband had developed an aggressive squamous cell carcinoma that went from a tiny pimple to a 5 cm x 4 cm x 2 cm thick blackened, mushroom‑like mass on his right temple, extending under the skin to a large lump at his parotid gland and into the lymph nodes in his neck. After consultations at three premier medical centers, we were left with little hope. We were preparing to go home and make the best of what we thought would be his final days. At a last visit with my husband's long‑time primary care doctor--someone we trust implicitly--he told us, "Not all the best doctors are at the premier medical centers," and said he knew the best oncologist in the area. Therefore, I can speak to the actual consultation, surgery and follow-up care. All the consultations, pre-op imaging, and labs were thorough and timely. He discussed options, the actual surgery, and possible complications weeks before I entered the OR for the actual procedure. I had questions about intra-operative monitoring of PTH levels. and anything that could go "sideways." He discussed each in detail so I would be clear going in. One year later, the scar has healed perfectly, my calcium levels are back to normal and I feel good. In the interim, I've had follow-ups and labs as required. In doing my own research, I found that parathryoidectomies have the best outcomes when performed by a surgeon who has extensive experience in that particular surgical niche. I did a lot of research to find a hematologist for a second opinion and found Dr. Khagi. I had to wait 3 weeks to get in to see him. On the day of my appointment, his office called me while I was on my way... to cancel my appointment which made me extremely upset. I told the staff that I was still coming. I had given Dr. Khagi, medical records to review when I got there. Staff was very nice. When Dr. Khagi came into the room to meet me for the first time, he didn't want to get to know me or my history. He just started talking about the records I provided.. I was there to find out if his professional opinion was that I wouldn't get another DVT, PEs or both in the future and if I needed to go back on blood thinners as another doctor had wanted me to. He told me he didn't think I needed to be on blood thinners anymore and that was it. I did ask him a question and he made me feel stupid for even asking it. He disagreed with the previous doctor. He was with me for all of 10 minutes and that was it. I was extremely disappointed. After my visit the office sent me a survey about my visit and I was very honest and said just what I am saying here and the girl just wanted to make excuses for him and tried to get me to change my opinion. This made me even more upset. If you don't want people to be honest, don't send them a survey. When I went back and read Dr. Khagi's notes from my office visit, I noticed that he had written things that didn't occur in the office visit. He also said he was with me for 50 minutes which was absolutely not true. He was with me for 10.. 15 at the most. So, I wrote him and disagreed with him. I didn't expect any response but he did write me several times.. he actually spent more time responding to me in messages than he did in person. I thought he would run his own tests just to compare apples to apples with my other doctor but he said they weren't necessary but for a second opinion, I did expect he would want to be as completely thorough as possible given my dilemma. I won't be going back to Dr. Khagi. I've read all of these other nice reviews about Dr. Khagi like how he has a great bedside manner and how he took time with other patients but I just can't honestly say that given his attitude towards me in the office, the lack of time spent with me and in his responses to me in the portal.
