I was disappointed with this place honestly the best thing here honestly were the ribs, the scorpion wings were a let down were dry, the fish taco was greasy, really bad, the carne Asada one and the fried chicken. Tried out this place when I was in Toronto earlier this year, and it did not disappoint! I got the lunch prix fixe which was a great deal. The chips themselves were not the best, but the guac was delicious, although I wish the portion was a bit bigger. I will say if there was a bit more balance in the tacos it would be better I thought the toppings on the meat kind of over took it. Been to this location in the past. John street location as well, and since I've moved to new neighborhood the location near eglinton as well. We drove out to college st location specifically since we knew it would be better, and sure enough it was. Fish and chicken are our go to. But the shrimp is excellent as well. Margaritas consistently great. More importantly staff is super polite and provide great service. They missed one taco in the order and was kind enough to provide a little package to go as an apology. Quality of food and thoughtfulness of staff did not go unnoticed and we'll be back even if it's further. Also since los colibris has closed near king and John a whole back, there's been a Mexican cuisine void in Toronto and carnita fills this gap well. read more

Music was loud theres speaker right above our table and our table was so dark unlike other tables and we were placed in front of kitchen door when light keeps interupting our talk everytime someone open and close because we are beside our table that that have uneven legs. The service was speedy and food came out very quickly. It was all very good, we did visit late at night so it felt like the food may have been prepped for a while. There also were a lot of fruit flies around the bar (a sign of the freshness of their juices and fruit) other wise extremely clean. Aside from that the eight spice tiger shrimp is awesome! Waited nearly 30 mins on the hot patio before they brought us water as they kept forgetting. We finished our nachos before our drinks arrived, I had to remind them to finally bring my margarita which tasted awful. They forgot some of our food entirely and finally we gave up and got our bill which had items we had not received. Not once did they come check on us or ask how things were. This restaurant hit the spot before a long flight back to Cali. It opened at 4pm so we made a reservation online to stay on schedule. We arrived early and were able to choose our table. The water was served in a tequila bottle. Cool touch! Highly recommend the tortilla chips with 3 dips: corn, salsa and beans. Amazing! At best this place is mediocre. I'll start with the good. All the female waitstaff was great, friendly, etc. We had a male waiter. My friend asked a simple question about pricing of the tacos (it wasn't clear if that was the price for a singular taco, it was), he got very snappy. He was very pushy about getting us to order quickly (we only been seated for a few minutes, after waiting twenty minutes to be seated despite the fact we had a reservation). He didn't ever check on our table later. Anyways, tacos are ok, not bad, not great. It's 1 taco for that price, overpriced if you asked me. But it was our first time going. I wouldn't recommend going here unless you are fine wasting a ridiculous amount of money and you don't mind being treated like a nuisance. read more

If you want to add some hip to your taco then this is the place to go! You've got a pretty edgy menu that's packed with fantastic flavour. I've had their Mexican Street Corn and Mexican Meatballs. The street corn is not worth $8 and off-putting with the cream. However, the Mexican meatballs are a winner! Definitely loved scooping up the beef with the chip they provided. Their tacos are also generally delicious. They do a mean Chicken Taco aka Pollo Frito. If you're feeling something fishy go for the Squid the Kid Taco (Tuesday) which has calamari in it. Hands down my favorite was the special Arctic Char Tostada - holy heavens! However, I wasn't a fan of the Cripsy Oxtail Taco (Friday), which seemed very bland. My most favourite part was desert. Pick up one of their many available flavors of Paletas (Popsicles). For $4 you can have a frozen version of a Nanaimo bar in your mouth - you just can't beat that! My only complaint is the setup of the place. It's cramped due to the communal seating. However, very necessary for when you need shout to your neighbour over the blaring hip hop. Totally disappointing - everything is definitely on the over-seasoned/extremely salty side. Or totally BURNT! The chips we were served were totally burnt and we were told they were the batch of the day and there was nothing they can do about it. (Check pic) The chips were followed by a totally burnt batch of corn- were not talking grill marks here, crust black corn. We were told that how it's severed (no it's not, we've been here before!). Is there no one to check what comes out of the kitchen?? To add insult to injury chewed on an avocado pit in the guacamole. Hosting and service were another issue. Went here for dinner while traveling through Toronto one weekend. First of all, great food & drinks. Not your typical Mexican restaurant, this place is definitely hipster/trendy. There are two tables of outdoor seating right as you walk into the restaurant off the street (very cute) and the rest of the seating is far back into the restaurant with booth and long share-table seats. Loved the vibe/interior. One taco ranges from $5-7USD. Food: I ordered the Cod taco as well as the fried chicken taco, both were delicious. The tacos are a little pricey BUT they are hearty, like they don't skimp on the fillings. For our appetizers we ordered the chips + 3 dips & chicken wings. Not sure what seasonings they put on their chips, but it was SO good that we ended up ordering another round! Drinks: get their sangria (my fave: Tangerine Guava Róse Sangria) omg...bomb AF! It's dangerous. Parking: street parking. We ended up parking about a block away. Traffic in the area is not very good, especially if it's at peak hours... For the tacos we got the Voltron Cod, Pollo Frito, Beef Cheek, and Moke Rojo. All of the food was great, creative, and lived up to the hype from the locals. I was first attracted to La Carnita when I was researching about unique frozen treats in Toronto and came across Frozen Bogins. The creator serves her signature paletas (frozen popsicles made from real fruits and other creamy variations) at this particular restaurant, and I was highly anticipating to try :D I came here on a late Sunday night. It was a full house, had to wait a bit and got seated at the bar. Ordered 2 margaritas and they were delicious. The Mexican street corn was very flavourful (a bit messy but you must order lol). Rice & corn frituras were spicy but I loveeeee rice balls lol. And I thought the pork confit tacos really stood out compared to the popular cod tacos. As for dessert, I had to order paletas... and then I saw churros, and I had to order that too :D! The cookies & cream paleta was very creamy and it had a whole oreo in there! The key lime pie paleta was quite tart for me, but I know a lot people would love that. The flavours change all the time... I do want to come back to try more hehe :3 Churros, on the other side, was quite chewy. I enjoyed the ones I had in Mexico early this year (they were much softer). I would definitely come back for drinks and the tapas :) Service is A+... very efficient and attentive. Last Sunday, I went out with a girlfriend to try out La Carnita's brunch. Luckily for us, it wasn't busy at all (unlike their popular dinner service) so we were seated right away. My friend had an iced Mexican mocha ($3.50) with Mexican chocolate, coffee, and cinnamon. For me, it was way too sweet and the chocolate definitely overpowered coffee. It was definitely more like an iced hot chocolate than a mocha. My agua fresca ($3.50) - mango, coconut and lime for the day's selection - fared much better. It was creamy and refreshing at the same time, and not overly sweet. Chorizo sausage taco ($4.75)- spicy maple syrup, crema, confit tomato, and cotija cheese- I loved the bold flavours of the chorizo, even though I couldn't detect much of that spicy maple syrup. This was one of my favourites at brunch. Cochinita pibil tostada ($5) - guacamole, achiote braised pork, fried egg- I love anything with a fried egg on top so this was another winner in my books. The flavours were not as bold as the chorizo taco, but still tasty. Crispy chicken torta ($6.25)- guacamole, crema, habanero honey glaze, salsa fresca, anejo cheese- The torta was more like a crispy chicken burger with a Mexican twist. I loved the habanera honey glaze, which added a fabulous sweetness to the sandwich. The overall combination of taste and texture was great. If I had to levy criticism, it would be the bun, which was a touch too dense. Roasted pork belly sope ($6.25)- roasted pork belly, poached egg, arbol lime hollandaise- This was the most brunch-like dish out of everything we ordered, but I wasn't a huge fan of the hollandaise, a sauce I normally love. It was too sour (presumably from the lime) for my liking. Churros with housemade cajeto ($5) - Can't have a satisfying brunch without some desserts! My last few churros experiences have been disappointing, so I was glad that these ones were excellent! Overall, brunch was enjoyable, but I thought that the their tacos were more successful than the more brunch-like offerings. Nevertheless, brunch here was definitely worth a visit, but I'll be returning for their tacos for dinner. read more

I like the size of this place, it's pretty big, so probably the line ups are not as long. I came on a Sunday night and there was plenty of seats inside. The service, it was OK... when the waitress asks us something... before we even finish talking... she is already walking away. When we were ordering, kept trying to up-sell us to order more. The music is WAY too loud, the people at the very back was way tooo noisy also! probably cause the music is so loud, they had to scream to each other) The outside is so dark and no sign, I wouldn't know if it was the place if I didn't see 501A on the door right beside it. parking, we were lucky to get a spot right in front of the restaurant, but if not, I wouldn't know where to park. appetizers, we had the corn and mango avocado salad, which was BOTH delicious! but a bit over priced, 2 pcs of corn for 8 bucks, yes it tastes pretty good, but I can put some dressing and chilli powder on my corn at home too! the mango avocado salad was creamy and delicious! but on the smaller side. Tacos, the chicken taco was the best of the ones we tried, there was nothing special about the cod (it was too small) and the beef cheek was horrible (little pieces of shredded beef) and the Sunday special Carmita (something like that) was like pulled pork on a bun, it was nice and big and filled, but I thought it would be a taco not a burger. Overall, the food is OK, but way overpriced (around 5 bucks for a tiny taco) Don't think I would return with so many great Mexican food in the DT area, especially since kensington market is just down the street. read more

Growing up in Toronto, I never realized how lucky I was to be surrounded by amazing taco places but after being exposed to mediocre Mexican food for a year while away at college I found myself falling in love with La Carnita. I came here with two friends on a summer afternoon and sat out on the patio. We ordered 5 tacos and tortilla chips with dip to share, my friend got the street corn for herself (which she loved) and I ordered the iced horchata for myself (which was delicious). Overall, the tacos and chips were quite flavorful and enjoyable to share between the three of us. Each taco was STUFFED with filling and sauce without the tortilla getting too soggy (which is a FEAT for most restaurants) but for $5 -$7 I was disappointed they were pretty small relative to other taco places around Toronto. The best tacos I've ever had! I don't know what else to say, but it's hands down the best tacos. The cabbage on the tacos makes everything so refreshing and the meat... Yum! I got the fish, battered chicken and beef cheek. My fave of all three is the beef cheek. They're still all good, I just prefer the beef cheek. We ended the meal with churros. Great service for a large party. Seated on the full communal table. However, they can only do split payment but not separate bills. With a $900 bill over 20 people, it's hard to figure out who owes what. The Cod Taco is still my only favourite on their menu. Nothing else really stood out to me. Their drinks are really good though - tastes fresh. My favourite is the GoldLink. I asked for another jalapeño drink and they were able to make me a Jalapeño Mojito. First things first, the ambience at this place is to die for. Beautiful peppermint lights, nice relaxing music, lovely greenery. Overall I really do love the ambience here. The customer service was exceptional. I didn't get the name of my waiter but she was patient, respectful, and she went above and beyond to get us acquainted with the menu and to make us feel welcome. The tacos were flavorful. I am not giving it a five star only because the pricing per taco is a bit pricey. It's about six dollars per taco which is a bit more on the expensive side for me. This is the kind of place to go to when you're in Little Italy and are craving a mean taco. But first, let me start with the chips and guac. The chips are fried to perfection, have an incredible crunch, and there's a hearty portion. The guac is delicious, and the pair go together really well. Onto the star of the show: the tacos. I had the Pollo Frito, Carne Asada and Crispy Cod. I've had better fish tacos elsewhere, but the pollo and carne were really delicious and flavourful. The crunch of the pollo frito matched perfectly with all of its toppings, and it's oozing juices all over the place. So good. The carne was steak done right, and was a great ending to the meal. I'll start off by saying that I firmly believe that people come here for the atmosphere. It's a great place to just hang out, enjoy the music, and the drinks ! The taco's aren't the best I've ever had...nor are they the worst tacos either. You're paying almost $6 for ONE little TINY sample sized taco. So you don't get your money's worth at all. They have quite a bit of options to choose from when it comes to tacos which is actually a pro to this place( except for when some options are sold out..). A huge con to me would be the fact that some of my tacos were cold by the time it got to me.. another huge con would be the service. Considering that there were literally 4 customers seated you would have expected them to be a lot more attentive, but that wasn't the case. Anyways the chances of me returning to eat are extremely low. La Carnita was a restaurant I went to with my friend where we splurged on an assortment of foods that did not disappoint. For the sides, mexican street corn tasted great and was very aesthetic. It was a little salty on the bottom but the topping was nice and cheesy. Avocado mango salad was nice and refreshing. Can't go wrong with churros. For the tacos, the cod was okay. I was expecting a lot because it seemed like it had the best reviews but I thought the fish was under-seasoned and plain. Other tacos I tried were pollo frito (chicken), carne asada (beef steak), and carnitas (pork). All of them were full of flavor and my favorites were the chicken and beef steak. My friends and I (6+ people) came on a Tuesday for the Tuesday special where you get 8 hardshell tacos to share. My friends ordered the other tacos and really liked the 'In Cod We Trust' taco. We also had quesadillas, corn, and churros (really delicious btw, I highly recommend). I also ordered a cocktail and was surprised at the alcohol content, despite the small portion. Overall, I found the food to be really tasty and well seasoned! I just found the portion sizes to be quite small for the prices they were charging. Our server did a great job on checking up on us and keeping up with our orders. We would occassionally just blurt out to add another item and I was impressed that they remembered it all- thank you!! Our server was also quite engaging, which made this place very welcoming and down to earth. The interior is decorated quite nicely and this place is very hipster. I would also recommend booking a table because, despite the numerous amounts of tables, quite a lot of them were reserved. There is also a bar for people who want to pop by for drinks only. The food came at a timely manner and the place was quite comfy. We were decently full but the prices really weren't worth the portion sizes we were given. This knocked back a few stars for me. Also, the bill could not be separated so figuring that out with a large group was not so favorable. We came in here while visiting Toronto for a weekend. The place looked lively and we liked the sugar skull signage outside. We sat at the bar and had a few margaritas and a set of tacos. The bartender was nice but not overly friendly or chatty.. he was however, attentive and took good care of us. The margaritas are really good here. I ordered mine with mezcal which in my opinion makes it even better. I love the smoky flavor the mezcal brings to a drink. We had a few tacos with our drinks, I forgot all of what we had but I know there was a cod one and a maybe a carnitas.. either way they were all tasty and a nice way to finish out our outing.
