The food was awful. I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas, and I've never had enchiladas served with raw zucchini and carrots. On top of that, the entire meal arrived cold. It got worse. When I went to the basement washroom, I swear I saw what looked like the end of a mouse's tail sticking out from under the door. Needless to say, I completely lost my appetite. When the waiter asked how everything was, I told him honestly that it was terrible. I had only taken two bites, and there was really no response. I wouldn't have wanted a replacement anyway after that experience. I also had some fruit bites, and about 10 minutes later my stomach started gurgling. By the time I got home, I felt awful. I was shivering, felt like I was going to throw up, and had to rush to the bathroom. It honestly felt like food poisoning. Visited this spot as its close to the museum and Casa Loma. The strong reviews looked promising so I decided to book a reservation here. The place is a bit small so it can be a bit tight so I would highly recommend having reservations if you have a large group. Tacos: The soft and the crispy tacos were both delicious. A great experience here for my friend's birthday. We made a reservation, which is likely necessary given the small size of the restaurant. Parking was a challenge, but there is a Green P that is about 5-8 minutes away that isn't too bad if the weather is good. The atmosphere is quite intimate and I did find myself bumping into other people / staff when going to and from the washroom, etc. The food was pretty good - the tacos were full of flavour and I got to try a variety by sharing with the group. I think my favourite was the beef barbacoa. The prices are definitely a bit up there for a Mexican restaurant, I believe the tacos were around $7 each. The quality made it worth it, but there's definitely other places in Toronto that serve up a great taco for nearly half the price. We also tried a couple of appetizers, including the nachos, guac and ceviche. The nachos were something special - it was a bit of a nacho pizza. I didn't expect that from Playa Cabana, given everything else was very authentic. The taste was good, but it was a bit of a challenge to share! This is a nice small cozy place and can seat one big table with a few smaller ones. Once you enter you get greeted with mexican music and the vibe. I felt like I was back in Miami. The staff was very welcoming and kind. They were kind enough to put a candle on my churros for dessert for my birthday. Ordered Pescado, Al Pastor and Al Carbon. Each comes in 3 pieces for $21. We ordered the whole menu basically, starting with chips and salsa (solid) and ceviche which was perfectly balanced acidity wise and made for a great bite. Next were tacos, and in order of excellence they were: - beef: explosive flavours, crunchy taco shell for texture, chunky guac - fish: perfectly crispy and lightly fried, lot of slaw but went nicely with the lime - chicken: meat was pretty good with the crunch shell and guac once again - pastor: meat was just ok but pineapple was great touch Finally, the reason this place gets that 5th star is the churros. Delicious food in a fun, quirkly location in The Annex. I had a carnitas burrito and my wife had the flautas, and both were exquisite. The sangria was world class -- much drier and limeier than usual. While the drinks and guac appetizer came out promptly, our entrees did take longer than expected. It annoyed me how they took reservations and didn't seat any reservations outside on the patio. It was like an hour wait to get a seat outside since it was "first come first serve" I have been here two times and both times I went I got attitude from the service. I was tasked with finding a spot for a group dinner of eight and landed on Playa Cabana. It was pretty easy to make a reservation via their email system and our table was ready upon arrival. I don't know why I was expecting more of a kitschy Mexican restaurant, but that's not what we got. Instead, it was very intimate and cozy and the service was stellar... We had a great night! To start, we opted for some guac which was tasty and had a nice little kick to it. To eat, I split the elotes a la parrilla and an order of tacos al pastor with my husband. The soft tacos come in an order of three but you can add on a fourth, so we did that to share evenly. It was the perfect amount of food for us, especially since the tortilla chips kept flowing! The pork in the tacos was seasoned very well. I'm used to the meat being cubed rather than in strips, so this was different but still tasty. They really packed in the filling, so I left super full. To sip, we shared pitches of mojitos which were nice and strong... The drink menu was quite lengthy and again, perfect for our group of revelers. Surprisingly good Flautas! They came as 3 rolls made of a crunchy tortilla containing lots of shredded juicy beef (although I thought it tasted more like pork haha). All those amazing tacos and burritos and enchiladas and all... but I gotta start this review saying that my favourite one is the AL PASTOR! Delicious pork marinated in this not too spicy sauce, grilled with pineapples, on a soft shell taco with guacamole and red onions, ouffff it's amazing! (Tip/secret: Now during the lockdown it was not on their online menu, but they still have it.) Okay.. okay... now back to the review. I had tried most of their food and there is nothing that I don't like. From the appetizers I love the Elotes, which is the corn on the cob, grilled and with cheese sauce rubbed on, it's delicious! The Fried Fish Tacos and the Short Rib Tacos are the most famous, both very good, good option for those that can't handle spicy because these two are not spicy at all... plus it is big, good portions! Now with the burritos, my favourite one is the Mar Y Tierra (Surf and Turf), it's made with beef cubes and the "sea part" can be shrimp or lobster, you choose. Rolled in a big tortilla with rice and beans, topped with green and red tomato sauce and some toppings. It's huge! (Other tip for takeout, if you are ordering burritos, get it "dry", without any sauces, because it might get soggy.) And for the gran finale, the dessert, I love their two sweets. The Churro, that comes with Cajeta Sauce (it is a kind of Dulce de Leche) and some small marshmallows, sooooo good! And their cake Tres Leches (it means 3 milks), it's a vanilla sponge cake with Cajeta on top, it seems to be so simple but it is sooooo moist and tasty and sweet and delicious and... okay, sorry again! Love this place! I had a mad craving for tacos one day, so I took a detour on my way home from work and stopped in for some Mexican fare. Obviously, I'm not Mexican and I have actually never even been to Mexico, so I'm definitely not qualified to speak about the authenticity of the food here, but I most certainly can comment on the flavours and presentation of the food. My opinion is WOW... just Wow. Seriously delicious food. I had the octopus tacos, guacamole with chips and finished off with crab cakes. I also had a beer, but in hindsight I should've had a margarita instead. They looked delicious! I tried a few different hot sauces, and boy, were they good! A couple were a bit too hot for me, but I enjoyed trying them. I put a couple of drops of each one onto the guacamole as I devoured it, so I could see which one I liked best. The octopus tacos were perfection. I should've ordered double and skipped the crab cakes, as they were not as enjoyable for me. The guacamole was fantastic and I loved the house made chips. Service was exceptional. I sat at the bar on my own and everyone was extremely friendly and I felt very welcome. Oftentimes, when dining solo, I feel a bit out of place or ignored. Not the case here. It seemed that the staff really went out of their way to make me feel at ease and ensure that I had a good experience. What a difference this makes in a dining experience. Playa Cabana is about a 15 minute walk from my office and I hadn't planned on going there but the person I had an appointment with nearby wasn't available so I decided to have lunch first. Walking in, it's a very narrow, small space, almost claustraphobic. The dim lighting didn't help but it set an intimate mood for the place. This looks like a nice neighbourhood watering hole and the immediate neighbourhood is mostly residential. I ordered the Tostadas with beef and it was served on a crispy tortilla, topped with lettuce, guacamole, black beans, and a few other ingredients. The presentation was nice and the taste was even nicer! With layers of ingredients, every bite revealed a different flavour and texture and they all worked well together. Delicious! There were four different sauces on the table, with varying degrees of heat. I tried them all and they were all good. I may just have to make this walk more often. read more

The service probably could have been better which is why the 4 and not the 5. The chips are amazing, freshly made, hot and the perfect amount of salt. Came here for dinner with my friends and had a blast.The restaurant is small and has a cute outdoor seating area. The food was delicious, fresh and love the selection of hot sauces they had for me. We started off with the guac and chips. Guac was great. And we also ordered the bucket of shrimp. That was Delicious!!!!! The shrimps had so much flavor!!! I had the lobster tacos for entree. That was delicious as well. It was bursting with flavor, with a hint of spice, the cheese, tomatoes and guac on the side. Oh man! My friend had the carne asada. The steak was cooked perfectly. Okay, so I found my new favourite Latin spot. I was frequenting the other Playa Cabana on Dundas W - however they changed their menu and all went to hell in my opinion. I recently dined at Playa Cabana and was wow'd. This place really needs 5 stars because the food was AMAZING, but it gets 4 stars because the service was pretty bad. It wasn't busy at all when I walked in, maybe 2 tables were full. I kinda already knew what I wanted (who else checks the menu before hand) lol. Ordered the short rib tacos because holy hell it sounded amazing, short rib enchiladas (yes, I love short rib) grilled Mexican corn, the tres leche cake & Churros. Relax, relax, I wasn't alone. The tacos were delicious, please please don't change the menu! I have to say the Enchiladas were my favourite. The beans had so much flavour, the sauces were perfect & the combination of all the flavours with the extra sauces on the table made my life complete! The grilled corn was okay, but nothing special. Probably the best Mexican food I've ever had! And that's saying a lot because I'm not usually a big fan of Mexican food. This place is tiny but has a few floors as well a couple of balconies. It's super trendy and fun however, and the food is great and decently priced. Some items like the corn ($10) are a bit expensive in my opinion for the portion. Most of the party got the short rib tacos, these came on a crispy shell, I had the fish tacos which were in a soft shell, and you can order them singularly or in orders of 3. The tacos aren't quite a meal in my opinion, but accompanied by an order of the corn, split between two people and the guacamole and chips, I was stuffed. The tacos are great, loaded with some nice fresh ingredients. I preferred my fish tacos to the short rib ones, the batter was light and crispy and came out piping hot, only to be cooled and freshened up by some crisp veggies and a great sauce. I'm not sure what the fish was however! The short rib were also great, the shell was crisp but not like a old El Paso taco kit, still had some flexibility to it so it didn't fall apart. The meat was flavourful and tender as well. The guacamole was delicious, definitely a must have, and the corn was also great, a bit spicy and a bit cheesy. The restaurant is a great space, it looks like a house from the outside and it's ultra trendy inside, fun music and the service was great and friendly. Water glasses and drinks were filled constantly, however the glasses were quite small so they were being refilled a lot! Overall a fun place to go with friends or a date. I've been duped by yelp reviews!! We were given recommendations for this place as a great lunch spot which was super cute inside and patio area was so inviting. The stars were for the decor and the one dish! Food we ordered: Chile Rellenos- with rice and black beans- this was the star dish for sure, two large chille rellenos and delicious rice.
