Coconut and Salted Caramel
Brett N.

Why 5 stars? Because my only complaint is that it was too hard to choose what to order. --- --- --- My default in an ice cream/gelato shop is to debate between about 8 different flavors, sample a few and make my decision. Unfortunately, you are limited to one sample here. And I totally get it. They don't want people spending 10 minutes eating for free. But I would have liked to meet in the middle and try 2-3 before choosing. Fortunately, I chose well. I ended up going with salted caramel and coconut and was very happy with my decision. It's hard to say if this was the *best* gelato we had our on trip, because I genuinely will be writing a 5-star review for all of them, but there is nothing I could complain about with this one (or any of them!) 5-stars for La Carraia and all of the gelato in Europe!

If you think all gelato is the same, it is not. This gelato is THE BEST gelato I've ever had. The white chocolate pistachio is so rich and amazing (and I don't even like white chocolate). We also tried the mixed berry, dark chocolate, and Nutella. All were so tasty. The staff were very kind and made our experience even better. Definitely add this to your list if you haven't been!! Even if there's a line out the door, it's worth the wait.

Gelato places are a dime a dozen in this town but La Carraia is worth going out of your way to get your dessert treat. Great choices, great service and yes, great gelato. The young lady who served us spoke great English (or at least enough to understand flavors and sizes) and was friendly. I chose a small cup and split it with my two favorite flavors - pistachio and hazelnut. It was a great portion and the gelato was smooth, creamy and absolutely delicious. I can absolutely appreciate that the pistachio was flavored with actual nuts and not colored with green food coloring. There is a small seating area in the front otherwise you're just around the corner from the Santa Croce https://www.yelp.com/biz/piazza-santa-croce-firenze?hrid=F-vwabltV5509JwXrlJTwQ steps where you can sit. Gelato is so good here! Fresh and creamy. You can tell they use quality ingredients. I got pistachio and another flavor.

I visited a friend who had been living in Florence almost a year and she took me here as her favorite gelato spot in the city. With that kind of hype, it would be hard for a place to live up to its reputation, but it did! After all the gelato I had in Italy - and I had a lot - this was my favorite. The creaminess and strength of flavor were stellar. Prices compared favorably to other places, even independent of quality. It's likely because this place isn't right in the middle of tourist central. They have multiple sizes and a generous sample policy, even if you (like me) are both indecisive and bad at speaking Italian. Even though they were busy on a late weekend night, our service was prompt and friendly. I ended up with a fruity cheesecake and hazelnut chocolate - a fabulous combo. They had a few less traditional flavors, but the classics of gelato are the best here.

Been here every night in Florence. Must get their gelato!! The white chocolate pistachio is a fan favourite (I like anything pistachio) but all flavors are a must-try. Very cute shop with small seating outdoors but you gotta grab a cup and walk around Firenze with it after dinner. Small is 2 euros and large is 3 euros. Prices have remained this way since a few years ago!

Frutti de bosco e yogurt & nutella : 1.5 euro

I finally tried this place after being recommended by a friend of mines. I haven't been to the original location, but this shop is small and there is outdoor seating right outside the shop. Their flavors are pretty simple for the most part; nothing too unique that stood out to me like I've seen at other gelaterias, and the smallest cup you can get is 1.5 euros. I got their yogurt with nutella & frutti di bosce (mixed berry) flavors and they complimented each other quite well! Good quality gelato. The man who helped me at the counter was really nice and sweet. You're only limited to one tasting here, so choose wisely!

MUST GO! Whether you're passing through or live nearby, you must go to Gelateria La Carraia for your gelato needs. I recently spent 4 months studying abroad in Firenze and lived walking distance from this gelato shop. My roommates and I would always go here for gelato after dinner, nearly every night. When my brother visited, I brought him here and he agreed with myself and my roommates that this is the best gelato he's ever had. My brother, my roommates and I have all traveled throughout different locations in Italy, and we can verify that this gelato is by far the best we've tried throughout all of Italy. Aside from the amazing gelato, the people working there are extremely kind and genuine. I had the opportunity to work with the gelateria for a local piece I was writing for one of my courses at the university. I luckily got to know Roberto, one of the owners of the gelateria. Roberto and Marco are the two brothers that own the gelaterias, located in separate areas of Florence. Not only will this shop give you the best gelato, but they will give you the best experience as well. Roberto and the gelateria employees make the place feel welcoming, warm and inviting. If you're looking for inexpensive, delicious gelato while in Florence, then Gelateria La Carraia is the place to go! There's no other place that compares to it and I guarantee you'll regret spending your euros elsewhere. *PS : The lampo di cioccolata and rocher is my all time favorite combination and I highly recommend trying it!

Delicious!

It's hard to find truly great gelato, especially in a city famous for tourist rip-offs, but this place is delicious! Fresh, high quality ingredients equal truly gourmet gelato. The chocolate is very strong (not the best for kids I wouldn't think) and the coconut will knock your socks off. This is truly a gelato place for true foodies and chefs; you can "taste" the quality of your ice cream here. There's a very small outdoor seating area which provides a welcome place to rest your feet after a long day of sightseeing. This location is bit off the beaten tourist path so lines aren't as bad. There's usually only one employee on duty. Stop here, you won't regret it!

Mmmm gelato!

Literally my favorite gelato place I went to. Can not recommend enough, especially the biscotti flavor if you're a chocolate lover.

If the espresso bar side is closed, you can go to the gelato side and they have the pistachio and orignal there as well. The full menu is only available at the espresso bar. I ordered the hazelnut and it was delicious. I still dream of this affogato. Smooth, rich, perfect mix of sweetness and bitterness. I do think this is worth a stop if you are in Florence.

I heard about Vivoli from a couple of tourists whom I was standing in line with at one of…read moreFlorence's historical sites. I later saw a video about the same spot on Instagram. The seed was planted, so I made it a point to check out Vivoli when I was in the Saint Croce neighborhood. There appeared to be 3 queues at Vivoli: one for the cafe/bistro, one for the gelateria, and one specifically for affogato. I think it was possible to get the affogato from the first queue, but I stood in the affogato only line just to make sure. The queue moved pretty quickly. I probably waited around 15-20 minutes to place my order, which I did on a self-serve automated kiosk. I gave my ticket/receipt to a barista after paying, and then she started working on my drink right away. The process of making the affogato was very fast, and it was fun to watch. I noticed that unlike a regular affogato back in the USA, which is typically one big gelato scoop, Vivoli fills half a cappucino sized cup with gelato and then adds scoops around the edges to form a square shape. I got pistachio, so the gelato gets dipped into chopped pistachio bits. (The pistachio bits did add a nice texture.) Lastly, fresh espresso was poured in. Vivoli had a counter that could fit about 3-4 standing persons. Other than that, there's no where to sit inside the affogato storefront. Mostly everyone else tried to find a spot outside to enjoy their affogato. Although I did enjoy my affogato, I didn't find it particularly different than one I've tried back at home. It was just the prettiest.

To be transparent, one of the things that drew me to La Strega was the name, I wanted to see what was so witchy about this gelato - and of course the positive reviews helped. The gelateria itself was lovely - soft music playing with intricate decor and a good amount of space. There were a few chairs and stools in case you wanted to sit and enjoy, though they were a little awkwardly placed. There were several flavors of gelato as expected - instead of being on display they were in tubs covered in lids. I heard that's the "proper" way to store gelato as it remains fresher, though the jury is still out for me on that one. Anyway, I got the smallest cup size where I was able to choose two flavors - so I went with the cream and the chestnut. The gelato was really good - creamy with great flavor. Service was great, and overall this was a solid gelateria - La Strega is definitely worth stopping into when in Firenze.
