this was the first gelateria my lady and i went to on our honeymoon and our goal was to have gelato everyday. it came recommended by our airbnb host. i don't know if it's because it was our first gelato but i think this was the best gelato I've had in my entire time in Florence and maybe even Italy! there was a line when we got there around 9 in August but it wasn't too long of a wait. for my first gelato in Italy i got fragola and stracciatela and they were both so good! there's a river and a bridge right outside the gelateria where you can enjoy your gelato and watch the water. I asked for tips on the best flavors- and Wow! Fig & Walnut is a flavor pairing I adore but I've never had it in a frozen dessert. Divine! The we had the Orange Chocolate ribbon and my head exploded with bright balanced flavors. Take a piece of the candied orange rind on your spoon, and then scoop up a little of the chocolate ribbon running through the creamy base. OMG read more

They have a vast selection of different flavors and during my four days here in Florence, I will probably be back to try a few more. Today I had the dark chocolate and one of their specials, white chocolate with pistachio sauce. The dark chocolate was my favorite as it was ultra creamy and packed with rich flavor. The white chocolate and pistachio was good but could have been more full of pistachio flavor. The line out the door gives you time to mull over your choices before you make your purchase. read more

Gelato was fabulous. The crostata ai frutti di bosco was so delicious. It had a delightful swirl of mixed berries and some cake pieces swirled in just like berry crostata. The delizia Carraia was also great and had lots of salty pistachios to offset the creamy smooth while chocolate. A friend had the peanut butter and it was also delicious and tasted just like peanut butter. read more

Having tried way too many gelato shops during our 2 weeks in Italy (at least, according to my waistline and scale), my wife and I unanimously agreed: La Carraia was our favorite, by far! I'm not sure what makes this place stand out; the gelato just tasted a little more natural and flavorful (without being too sweet), just a little more creamy (without seemingly overwhelmingly rich), and offered a great selection of flavors. As Dr. Evil might say: "it's frickin' delicious!" As an added bonus, this shop is right next to the Arno River so you can enjoy your gelato while chilling by the river! read more

Fabulous gelato. My favorite was the chocolate orange. Went back to this store 2 days in a row while in Florence. The containers to go were ideal....beautifully packaged & presented & the gelato was still mostly frozen after 90 minutes. They will give you cones to go as well so that you can still eat the gelato in a cone later on if you desire. They were also reasonable about letting you have tastes before you buy. Staff are friendly & patient. Price is excellent. Tried other gelato in Florence, Venice, Rome & Amalfi & none compared to this. Wish I could get this flavor & the quality of gelato in San Diego. read more

First off this place makes incredible gelato. It's like mind numbingly good. It was creamy, cold, and not in liquid phase like any good gelato. It also does not contain any meat so it is a good meal for any vegetarian on their trip to Florence. I had them stracchiatella and the tiramisu flavors. They were both great tasting and the tiramisu tasted like eating real tiramisu. I only had one real disappointment. The napkins were subpar. You could use these napkins to sand down a nice piece of oak, but they were not prime for cleaning ones face or hands after a messy and syrupy endeavor. Overall the napkins did not detract from the overall flavor of the gelato, so it was great place and I will enjoy more of their creamy goodness read more

This place has forever ruined me for gelato, because nothing else compares. The pistachio was the best I've ever had - luscious and creamy with the richest pistachio flavor. They also managed to make a simple straciatella into something mind-blowing, with perfect slivers of dark chocolate that melt in your mouth instead of those frozen chunks of chocolate that get stuck in your teeth. All this plus friendly service and a killer location right next to the Arno, where you can enjoy this deliciousness on a bridge overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. If I ever make it back to Florence, this will definitely be one of my first stops. read more

First of all I would just like to say I really like the location of this place. That's a big deal for me. I like being able to take a nice walk across the bridge, have access to free wifi and enjoy my gelato while sitting on the wall and looking at the river, buildings, sunset, etc. I feel they have a reasonable selection of gelato, or ice cream, if you're going to be THAT picky :p. I've tried 6 of their flavors- My least favorite would have to be lemon. At first it's great when paired up with something like strawberry, but alone it's quite too much to really enjoy. I also went out on a limb and tried their dark chocolate which I didn't find too rich and I was happy with that :) If you're on that side of the river or simply want a destination gelato across the river, La Carraia isn't a hard decision for me. It's not the best gelato in Florence, but I will definitely go there again. read more

Hell yes, I love La Carrai. This was my close go-to gelato shop. In 2008, it was 1 Euro. I doubt that's the case anymore, but still go. The staff is lovely, the flavors are legit and authentic, and then you can hop outside and stand on the sidewalk or sit on the bridge if you're feeling particularly adventurous. Great flavors: limone, berries of the wood, hazelnut, and straciatella. The good: amazing flavors and nice people. The bad: gets crowded, but that's just a hallmark of a popular place. read more

The best gelato I've had in my whole life! A friend of mine recommended La Carraia to me before my 4 months abroad in Florence. It was the first gelato place I tried in the city, and throughout my whole time there, I never found anything better. La Carraia (I believe there are 2 locations in Florence; however, I've heard this one is superior in terms of quality and variety) is right off of the Ponte Vecchio. The store is so clean it's actually sparkling, and the number of gelato options is astounding. All the flavors here are absolutely incredible. Everything is light and fluffy, but creamy and rich at the same time. You really can't go wrong with anything! Some of my personal favorites are Cookies (the Italian version of cookies n' cream), Yogurt and Nutella (perfect balance of tangy and chocolatey) and Pistachio. The Chocolate Mousse is also one of the most magical things I've ever eaten (it's pure chocolate heaven - so rich and light)! I also had the Ricotta Cheese and Pear; if you like ricotta, I highly recommend. The pear is so refreshing and it's really unlike anything that I've ever tried! Prices are very reasonable. They really pack the gelato on, no matter what size you get, so the smallest - €1.50 - still gets you quite a bit. The larger the size, the more flavors you're able to mix (2 for the smaller sizes, 3 for slightly larger, etc.), so that's something to keep in mind. So worth the money (honestly, I'd probably pay fifteen times this for this good of gelato). This place is golden. It may very well be what I miss most about Florence. Honestly, you haven't lived if you haven't tried La Carraia. read more

We traveled all through Italy (Rome, Sicily, Tuscany, northern Italy and Venice) and this was our favorite gelato during our trip. Something about it was just better. It tastes better, it was silky and just super delicious. Please don't leave Florence without trying this place. I will dream of this gelato until my next visit. read more

One of the first gelato places I was taken to upon my arrival to Firenze. My writing professor gushed that it was her son's go-to gelato spot and I can see why. Upon entering the gelateria, one immediately notices the great care taken to create the cute atmosphere which is created through meticulous touches such as small ribbons and a light green motif. The girls behind the counter are amicable and agreeably allow for one to taste test as many flavors as desired. I decided upon the chocolate mousse and salted peanut combo- which was a perfect semblance of salty and sweet. My good friend, Bern, has sustained that this may be the best gelato place in the entirety of Florence. With speedy service, a pleasant theme, and sweet gelatistas (yes, I've done a play on words with bartista and gelato... I'm not sorry) it's definitely one of the most notable gelato places across the river. read more

Great gelato at a fair price! We came here twice in the two days we were in Florence... Just so good! AND they have salted peanut flavor for you peanut butter lovers out there. Unlike many gelato places with big lines, the employees are patient and will let you sample instead of making you feel rushed. Wow. They had some awesome flavors. I got chocolate orange, and some kind of orange cookie. They were amazing! Not to mention cheaper than venice and 100 times better. They also had different size cups and cones. Fast service. Right near a bridge. We got lucky with a beautiful sunset as we ate our gelato. I'm so impressed with this location than when I visited La Carraia 2 on Benci. They have two cases of gelato here, with your normal flavors and their own unique flavors. For 1.50 euros it's definitely a steal even having a choice of two kinds on a cone or cup! I got their yogurt crunchy and after 8 (mint and chocolate) flavors and they both were SO good and rich. Also had a small taste of their chocolate fondente and it's REALLY good. This is definitely one of the cheaper gelaterias I've encountered that offer the same great quality of gelato that I've tasted at more expensive places. Even better because it's next to the bridge and you can enjoy a beautiful view! Come early when it isn't crowded; I've passed by this place plenty of times to see it PACKED with tourists sitting outside and all over the sidewalk. I know that this place is touted as one of the best geleterias in Florence and maybe I am just really really particular but it isn't the best in my book. While better, than nearby Ponte Trinita geleteria, I think maybe this place is a tad overrated. For example, I happen to LOVE coffee-flavored gelato and when I first tried the gelato at Carraia, the gelato was super sweet (which I don't like) sticky, with a caramel sauce which I don't find at other places who make the same gelato. I tried a few other options but I just found all of them to be super sweet when personally I prefer the true flavor of the ingredients shine rather then the added sugar. That is not to say that it isn't a good geleteria, I think this may just mean that I am sensitive to overly-sweet treats and like I mentioned before , it is a very popular place among tourists and locals. Across the river in Oltarno, this gelateria delivers. A good stop before or after Palazzo Pitti. As we approached this gelateria, happy customers were enjoying their gelato in close proximity to the shop - by the bridge. Many flavors to choose from. This is a well run shop - they are quick at the point of sale - with very minimal wait time - less than five minutes - compared to other places such as Eduardo which can easily be a 20-30 minute wait minimum. Tasty gelato (e.g., strawberry, pistacchio, and hazelnut) at lower than market gelato prices compared to other solid quality gelato shops on the other other side of the river. read more

We watched this well-oiled machine of a staff for several minutes while they passed out 10-15 affogatos within 30 seconds. We sat on the curb and enjoyed ours in the glass cups they gave us. This was a highlight for us. The creamy gelato with espresso on the spoon was perfect for a hot day. I hope this business continues to thrive and I look forward to recommending it to everyone I know heading to Florence.

The store owner is so friendly and helpful at explaining things. The gelato isn't your typical gelato because it's self serve in frozen-yogurt machine so you can choose however much you want and it's all weight based. I was initially skeptical - I mean where else have you tried gelato like this? But man it is SO worth the try. The flavors are delicious while the gelato is smooth and creamy. I tried a LOT of gelato in Italy (at least once a day), and this one was one of the few that really stood out.
