Though I have eaten at a La Carreta branch many times, I haven't been to one in maybe 15 years, so when a group of friends and family decided to meet here, I was excited. This location is in a nice retail spot and the outside and inside is pretty nice and new. We had about 15 people, so you can imagine the pandemonium that the wait staff had to deal with. Despite that, they did a great job and all the food was good and came out together. My son ordered shrimp tacos without the good stuff (cilantro and onion), because you know... kids. They were loaded with shrimp which tasted good. I ordered a lunch special fried chicken chimi. It was okay, nothing special, but the sauce on it was great. The beans are great and had good flavor and texture, unlike many Mexican food chains in the Winston Salem area that sell bland, soupy beans. The rice, despite its pale color has a lot of flavor as well. The table chips seemed house made and the salsa had a kick to it, which is rare. It's hard to sum the experience up due to the chaos, but I came away with a solid reminder why La Carreta has been around so long. I'd definitely come back. read more

This is one of my regular spots. It's a great restaurant for groups or solo. They have a great selection of dishes. The staff is friendly and efficient. Today was packed so we were off to a slow start but once they took our order everything went smooth. My wife got the Camaro es en Crema(Shrimp in a cream sauce. It was amazing, with a decent portion of shrimp and vegetables in a delicate sour cream sauce that stood out. Comes with rice, tortillas and a salad. Mix the rice in for a mouthful of flavor in every bite. I got the Tilapia Veracruz. The red sauce e it came in scared me at first glance, I thought it would be spicy but it was not at all. It was a chipotle smoked flavor that gave the dish a level up. The tilapia itself was overcooked but a decent amount of pieces, it's topped off with a few shrimp and baby scallops, with zucchini and squash for added flavor. I got it with their house mashed potatoes instead of rice. It's definitely home made and lumpy, which I actually like and seasoned Latin style. Overall it was a great meal with great service. They have a small bar also in case you want to sit solo. Their cocktails are amazing especially their flavored margaritas, like the cucumber or Jalapeño, which I forgot to take a picture of. read more

Had some extra time before my hair appointment @ social lite studio and well it was cinco de mayo so why not swing in! Lunch for just me today and had a lovely time. Service was amazingly speedy as they were preparing the restaurant for the evening celebrations. The refried beans were perfection and I never pass on La Carreras politely spicy salsa. Great seating and comfortable low lighting made me want to take me out to lunch here more often. read more

The atmosphere was very nice on a Sunday evening. Our server was attentive without being overbearing. I had the tacos al pastor. They were THE BEST tacos al pastor I've had in North Carolina. The pork was cooked perfectly. The pineapple flavor came through perfectly. The tortilla didn't fall apart. I usually get steak fajitas, but this is better here. Loved it! First, I'm from Los Angeles and Mexican food is kind of our thing. We went for lunch and I wish I took a menu picture but it's huge! Kid meals are $6.50 and portions are huge. Lunch specials are about $8.25 and also quite large. They bring out free chips and salsa and it's really good. I'm honestly hard to please when it comes to salsa and this met the mark. I ordered a burrito with black beans and veggies inside and it was fabulous. The refried beans do have lard and the rice might have powdered chicken stock and butter in it, said our server. FYI to vegetarians. I personally just stuck to black beans and veggies. They have a big vegetarian section as well. For sure would return. They even have a fun candy section at the entrance to pay for some candy on your way out. Fun variety. read more

This place is a regular for us. It's been a hit or miss for us as far as service. It depends on who is working. For example today we were seated right away. It was at 20% capacity on a Sunday. We waited for 30 minutes before a waiter approached us for our drink order. We were ready to leave. They had several waiters they probably just forgot about us. Though, other times it's been the friendliest and entertaining place to gather with the family. So, just heads up... hit or miss. The food is great! This particular La Carreta is related to another I used to frequent in Asheville( I'm not sure if the other locations around are related) I was a regular at the Asheville location so, it's a pleasure to say I have an equally great experience at this location. Location: With the signage you really can't miss it. It is in Robinhood Village. Plenty of parking available even on busier evenings. Atmosphere: Very cool artwork, authentic Mexican music, casual/dressy casual. Each seating area has a neat feel to it from the bar to the booths. Customer service: We have had every waitstaff they have (I think) and each time receive good service. A couple of them know we are trying to learn Spanish and try to have light conversation and let us practice. The food: big delicious portions! Pro tip: definitely order the queso appetizer...though chorizo is always a favorite switch it up and ask for ground beef or chicken instead...it is REALLY good. If you aren't a meat fan in general the queso is addicting so give it a try. We have been enjoying the fajitas from here lately. The single portion has been enough to share with the 2 of us and it is always served sizzling with perfection. Drinks: We stick to the classic margaritas on the rocks. They have plenty of supplies for Cadillac, flavors, etc. our friends who go outside of the classic and dress them up some are always pleased. This is my go to late night Mexican place. The place is always clean, plenty of seating, and genuine waiters and waitresses. Everytime I go I can expect my food to be hot, fresh, and out in a decent amount of time. If you want some Mexican food and an atmosphere where you want to talk to your significant other without having people within earshot of your conversation, then you may want to try this place. That said l enjoyed the outside seating in a peaceful setting socially distanced with friendly staff and great big portions of delicious food. I ordered steak Fajitas for $12.99. After a short wait while l munched on free chips and spicy salsa out came 3 plates of food! Wholly molley!! A plate w refried beans, rice and guacamole salad with sour cream another plate w warm corn tortillas and the main course of steak fajitas w many different veggies! Oh man! La Carreta is great, Maria served us. She's always very friendly, we speak to her in broken Spanish, she's very encouraging though, bless our hearts. The chori-queso is one of the best I've had. It's queso dip with chorizo mixed in, it's not spicy but it has a ton of flavor. We always go for the fajita, their tacos are good too though. The service there is pretty consistent and quick, the crew are always great and I'm always offered more chips before I get to the end of the basket. Although they're a chain restaurant, they really have good food consistently. Make sure to come hungry because they have a ton of different things to try. Get there early, or get there around 8pm. It is a lot busier than it was when we first started going there and I can understand why. We normally get a margarita at the bar while we wait for a table, they're strong and really refreshing (if you were wondering) you can have a small, medium, or large, house or too shelf. If youre a beer drinker, ask for the large beer, even if only for the experience of it. read more

After all, these are the same people who think they have good BBQ around here. They are just too used to eating fried everything to appreciate a spice. This place is great. Ive been a customer here for a while at night. Don't go here during the day time. The girls cant make a decent margarita and they will forget to put ur food order in. This is the closest restaurant from where we live, and I use to love this place. The setting is newer and has a nice feel to it. However, upon repeat visits, there is always something disappointing about this place. The food takes forever to arrive, regardless of how many other customers are present. The food lacks flavor, and there are frankly too many other American-Mexican restaurants to choose from that are better, and also nearby. We stopped going here a little while back, and now we go to Clemmons for a restaurant where there is typically a wait to be seated. Lesson learned... if there is not a wait at a nice-looking restaurant in an up-and-coming location, there is probably a reason. Not really a fan of this place. I've given it three chances since it is only a stone throw from my apartment and each time there was something "meh" about it. The first time, Tori and I dined in. It took FOREVER for us to order and get our food despite the restaurant being eerily empty. I think we were there for an hour and a half when we only intended to be there 45 minutes max. The food has always just been mediocre. The first time it wasn't too bad, but nothing to write home about either. The second two times we got takeout. I came in to pick up my order and they had forgotten to make it completely. I waited (luckily not too long) for my food to be made and the host was apologetic. It was excusable even though they also gave me rice when I had ordered beans. The third time, I also got take-out, and while it was there waiting for me, the enchilada was completely chewy and almost rock hard. It tasted as if it maybe sat under a heat lamp for quite some time before being popped in the microwave. After that, I decided I'd drive the extra 3 miles to Stratford for my Mexican food cravings. read more

I really wanted to offer a good review based on service and friendliness, but the food was so bad that all I can do is offer 2 stars. My husband and I chose this location for a weekday date night. Sad to say that we were both very disappointed. When we arrived service was great. They kept our glasses full, chip basket was warm, and our server was friendly. Once our food came, however, we regretted our decision to eat there. We both ordered their rib eye, mine with beans and rice for the side and my husband with an added enchilada. The rice was tasteless and the beans were ok. The worst part was the meat. It was sliced extra thin and was completely over cooked. It was like chewing rubber! It also wasn't seasoned well, so there was no flavor (perhaps it was cooked off from being left over heat too long). My husband wanted to send it back, but I just wanted to leave instead. We went on a slow Tuesday night, so I don't understand why the food was so bad. Was our meal leftovers from the day before? Yuck. We definitely won't be returning to this location and I can't recommend it to anyone looking for a Mexican meal. read more
