I live in Washington State and was searching for a specific costume for my son: A deluxe commander fox in youth large. One that was made a few years ago. I could not find it anywhere. Then I found it on crazy for costumes website but was unsure if it was a scam site or not. It seemed to be too good to be true since I could not find the costume anywhere else. Also the price was very fair so I was even more skeptical. So I looked up the business address on their website and saw it was a legit business. La Casa De Los Trucos must be Miami's oldest mom & pop costume shop, it's been around 46 years. My grandfather used to bring me here when I was little sometimes just to walk around inside and look at the costumes since we lived nearby. Lots of memories here but non the less this is the best place to find a costume. As soon as you step in you can't help to notice that the walls are covered in costumes. Costumes everywhere, literally! What ever you want to be for Halloween or to dress up, they have. They have costumes, mask, accessories, make-up, cheap and quality items. It's very tight to walk inside, the isles are narrow since it's a small store with so much inside. If you can't find the costume you're looking for on the walls, then walk over to the back of the store where there are two computers available to search for your costume. Once found, the staff will bring it over to you. Despite the overflow of costumes, they are very organized and staff is very helpful. My favorite section of the store is the prank/gag gift area. Located a few feet to the right upon entry, you can't miss it because usually they have the same employee, an older man that's been there for an eternity behind the counter. He is there to make you laugh and give you a few heart attacks while he's at it. Ha ha, he is the master of pranks. He sells almost any prank gift you can think of: Bad candy/gum, squirting ink, poop, fake bugs/rodents, zapping cigarette boxes, exploding gum, whoopee cushions... you get the point. On this past visit I just bought a small rat that moves (taking it to work to scare a few people, hehe!). He lets you try them out but since you don't know what's a prank or not, he will prank you and make you jump a few times! Love it! Don't be shy, interact with him, you won't forget it! Every time I have someone from out of town, I make sure I take them here for a few giggles, they always leave amazed. Prices are fair in comparison to Party City or other costume stores. They have a very small parking lot so street metered parking is suggested in the surrounding area. Pro Tip: DO NOT come during Halloween, it gets packed to the point where the line to go in wraps around the block and since mentioned earlier, inside is small an narrow they only let a couple people in at a time. A lady was helping me many of the costumes I wanted they didn't have in my size when I asked if they had a size larger she didn't even bother to ask just told me no. I tried on 2 outfits after requesting 6 and she tells me after the next thee inquiries ( you can only ask for three at a time and try on one at a time ) that she can no longer help me with any other costumes...... who does that !? She tried to make it seem like it was store policy but I'm next to people who told me they'd been there for over an hour trying on and trying to find something. There's NO A/C it's like a gas chamber in there the stalls to try things on has NO privacy people walk past and stand in front and peek in the sides ! A girl opened my curtain twice with her backpack I had to stick my head out twice and ask her not to stand in front of the makeshift stall. In need of a pirate costume for Yelp Spring Break, I headed to La Casa De Los Trucos after a Little Havana expert pointed it out as a great spot for costumes. I went early on a Tuesday so the place was practically empty. Someone immediately asked if they could help and led me to a computer where I could browse all the costumes they have, pick a few of my favorites and within minutes, she brought them out from the back and I was in the dressing room trying them on. I liked not feeling pressured or rushed to make a decision. Granted, she only would speak Spanish to me but we're in Little Havana so I pulled out my best español with hopes that all would end well... And it did! During Halloween, I hear that this place is a mad house and the line can span up to three blocks down Calle Ocho. That being said, I'd suggest figuring out what you want to be a couple months out and coming here to beat the crowds for a pleasant shopping experience. They even have a comprehensive website where you can freely scope out all their costumes to make your trip that much easier. In short, don't come expecting to browse around as it's not that kind of place. Overall, it's the only costume shop I've really visited in Miami (at least that's open yearlong) and will most likely count on it for all my random costume needs in the future! read more

PARTY CITY CAN'T COMPARE I went today during my lunch break to grab some last-minute costume accessories for a party I'm headed to tonight. 1) Their selection is HUGE. 2) Employees are knowledgable kind and helpful. The cashier even made some recommendations and swapped out my selections for products he honestly thought would look better! 3) Party City CANNOT compare to their selection. They have everything! I really don't understand the great reviews for this place. It's basically a tiny version of Party City that's open year round. Wow, what an accomplishment! This place deserves 5 stars everyone! The customer service was really subpar. I couldn't even look at half the stuff because there were so many boxes piled up in an already cramped store. We asked if we could go behind the counter to actually see like 1/3rd of the stuff that wasn't visible, and were told no. I ended up buying a wig which I wasn't allowed to try on - and after buying it and realizing it was really crappy, I also noticed it had two long strands of someone else's hair on it too so that whole "no trying on wigs" rule is bullshit. I ended up going to ABC Costume in Wynwood and had a way better experience where the staff actually gave a shit about us, provided us with lots of options and helpful ideas, and most importantly let us try stuff on! Edit: in response to the owner's reply - your staff did NOT put the wig on a mannequin to show me what it would look like, they provided the absolutely bare minimum in customer service and basically told me "this is what we have". The wig that was sold to me had a long brown strands of hair in it (it was a white-hair wig), so clearly someone either tried it on before me, or someone bought it and returned it. While I'm sure as the owner of the business YOU care about these things, your employees did not share the same sentiment. Therefore, I dispute your dispute. read more

Dear La Casa de los Trucos, "Memmmorryyyy, all alone in the moonlight..." Ah, La Casa de los Trucos... So many memories of shopping for costumes and accessories that I don't know what to do with! You've been around for such a long time, that you are an icon and a staple on Calle Ocho. As a child, I would look forward to coming here with my family; my older brother always making it a point to put on a really creepy mask to scare the crap out of me with! What are big brothers for?! Your store is packed, literally, like a sardine, from top to bottom, every inch of wall space covered in some sort of costume or accessory. There are even items hanging from the ceiling, and don't get me started on the display cabinets and counters. If there is something that one is searching for, which seems elusive, chances are they will find it HERE. Your costume assortment and prices range from reasonable to OMG, but for the most part, what one gets here is of good & lasting quality. There is such a variety, that it often makes it hard to choose, and I often spend HOURS here, against my own will. But that's ok, it's a day well spent. I enjoy trying on the wigs and hats, being silly with my friends, and enjoying the fantasy of dressing up. Note to shoppers: you can only try on 3 costumes per visit (meaning per day), so make sure you choose wisely, or you will have to make repeated return trips. Also, some costumes are kept in the warehouse next door, so it may take some time to receive what you want to try on - BE PATIENT. I guess I can understand why you have the above policy (to have better control, loss protection, etc), but it is truly a pain, especially since I live so far, and visiting your store is often an unexpected treat. It makes it quite difficult to have such a limited allowance of costume try-ons with such a HUGE selection of costumes... Maybe you can make it 5 instead of 3??? I hope. La Casa De Los Trucos Costume Shop has been around longer than I have! Located in the heart of Little Havana, this place might not look like much from the outside but don't judge a book by it's cover. This little shop has all of your costume needs from the smallest detail like jewelry to over the top masks. As soon as you walk in you're overwhelmed with the amount of costumes, masks, wigs, toys and accessories throughout the shop. I personally think some items are overpriced and are better off buying elsewhere. For the most part though, they have some costumes you can't find anywhere else. They also have great accessories for pranks which are great for April Fool's Day. Although the place is small, they found a way to fit 2 fitting rooms in there. They're normally open till 6 PM, but extend their hours during the Halloween season. Parking can be difficult, they have a small parking lot with few spaces in the front and additional parking in the back. The staff is very friendly and mostly speak Spanish only, so be prepared to speak Spanglish and/or act out what you want. read more

This place is tiny, cramped and over flowing with costumes. I was concerned that it was going to take forever to find my outfit, which was a Pirate costume I needed for the Yelp Pirate Takeover on the Liberty Belle (great event by the way) To my surprise Trucos is actually pretty well organized. The young associate took me to a computer screen and told me to scan through the images for a pirates costume that I liked and she would bring it out for me to try on. Pretty simple huh? It was because 15 minutes later I was out the door with my costume and accessories and spent less than 40 bucks for costume, vest, eyepatch and sword. BOOM! La Casa De Los Trucos is a landmark in Miami. It's at the corner of "creativity" and "La Saguesera" .. that's where you will find anything for your costumes in the heart of Miami's Latin community. Yes, the parking sucks but that's how it is in that neck of the woods. God-forbid that any Miamian would have to WALK for more than a block. People, there's plenty of parking curbside. No big deal. Inside, it looks like Party City exploded in a crammed space. Yes it's tight and not much room to get around. But somehow, that's part of its charm. Oh yea, and you'll find most anything you need for your costumes and gadgets to do pranks and play tricks on people. It's worth going there if only for the experience. And in the process you may actually run into a celebrity like I did while I was there. And it was the real thing, not a look-a-like costume. Whether you need a costume mid december or a disguise for a date, CDT has got you covered. This place has been around for as long as i can remember, yet i had never been here until yesterday. I decided that i needed a fake mustache and a fedora that was 3 sizes too small - for whatever reason, this place came to mind almost instantly. When you walk in, at first you think it's an absolute cluster-fückenburg (town in Germany, which is known for being a mess). As you look around you realize that there is a method to the madness. I ask the lady at the front for a mustache, she points me at some youngster in the back who shows me their impressive psuedo stache collection. I then ask for a stupid looking fedora and she points me to to hat specialist... they have employees for different zones. It would help if you spoke spanish (if the location and name don't give that away). Everyone was helpful and the visit took maybe 10 minutes including mustache instructions. They had a good variety and the prices seemed fair. I can imagine that this place is a madhouse during Halloween though. The one downside of the visit was the extremely limited parking (total of 6 spaces out front) - be prepared to drive around for a meter just in case. NO RETURNS! read more

I guess they have to pay for all those TV commercials during the fall somehow... yeah, it's pricey compared to the alternatives around town. As an example, I bought a simple cowboy hat here for $12 since it seemed like a reasonable price for the quality. Later that same evening on a trip to Halloween USA (Midtown Miami) I saw the exact same hat for $6. I'm sure the prices vary depending on what you are looking for in particular but this is just my experience. If you are looking for something unique (or sheer variety) this is probably the best place in Miami for it. They have absolutely everything for Halloween. Don't do what I did though... go BEFORE October 15 to be safe. When I was there at 6 PM on Oct 27 it was a mad house. Seriously, they had a standing line out the front door due to capacity limits. Once inside it was kind of tough to figure out what was going on with all the customers standing around. The employees seem to blend into the crowd when it's that packed and it was hard to find someone to ask for help. Although, once I found an employee that wasn't helping someone else he was very helpful. Overall, you can't dispute the selection and unique shopping experience they have here and this earns them a few stars. Unfortunately, it is overpriced compared to what else is around town and therefore I can't justify more than 3 stars for this reason. read more

In my 24 years in Miami I finally went to this very talked about store. It has year round costumes and they carry various magic trick sets and lots of "regular items" that are actually practical jokes. For example, they had fake cigarettes,stink bombs, terrifying fake teeth and many more. I really like to recognize the service I received while I was there. On Halloween you'd think they would stay open passed 8pm, but nope they decided to close at 7:50. I arrived 7:55 an old rude man upfront locked the door and did not let anyone come in. You'd think the owner would like to make money since this is the only time of the year where they sell costumes, but I guess they don't care. This store is as Cuban as I am and I have been shopping at it since I got here from my country in 1980, btw I just had one of my daughters Quinces and some of the costume items I used were from there, it was incredible!
