I went to Crazy for Costumes to rent an outfit, but before I could even step inside, I was accosted by a tiny gatekeeper of an elderly woman stationed like a bouncer at the door. She grilled me, my wife, and my daughter as if we were trying to enter a secret society. I told her I was just looking for some costume makeup, maybe some wigs and a bit of spirit gum, hoping for quality supplies. But when I said I wanted to browse, she shot back with all the warmth of a DMV clerk, "We only rent costumes." Her attitude was so off-putting that we turned around and left before the interrogation could continue. As we drove past the store afterward, we saw her turning away more would-be customers, apparently gatekeeping is her full-time gig. read more

I ordered a costume with them on October 23rd, paid for priority shipping and as of Halloween I still have not received it! I have tried emailing the warehouse, nobody responds. I also never received a confirmation email with a tracking number so I have had to manually check on their website the status and there have been no updates since the day I ordered my costume. I'm glad others seem to think Crazy about Costumes is such a great place, but when we stopped in and wanted to browse for ideas the lady at the front desk was just unpleasant and had no suggestions. When we said that we wanted to browse she basically said that's not what we do. I was so disappointed. I'll spend our $300 somewhere else. I can't say enough about Costumes Etc. I met the owner, Keith and he was so personable and friendly, I actually felt bad that I did not rent a costume that day! I am going to a Roaring 20s party and wanted to get some ideas on what to wear. The location is filled from top to bottom with costumes and accessories but Keith and his soon to be wife Karen, know exactly where everything is. Again, they're extremely helpful without being overbearing. I got some ideas for my boyfriend and I but wanted to search a little more so I did not committ to anything but I did ask to see their boas. I do not want to have a cheap or thin looking boa with my costume. She showed me the regular feathers but pointed out they can stick you. She also showed me the ostrich feather boa and I knew that was the one! Ostrich feather boas are expensive to buy and I don't think I will need to use/wear it again unless I pursue a career in exotic dancing ;-) so I'll definitely be going back to rent my accessories! read more

Costume World has a bigger inventory but doesn't provide the quality and one on one attention that Keith and Karen give in this husband and wife owned shop. They really do care and their prices are unbeatable. One thing that really makes this place deserve five stars is that they will go out of their way to make sure you are a satisfied customer. I had an actor who did not fit into the costume I rented and they instantly allowed me to come in and exchange the full costume and with a smile. All they cared about was that I was happy. As Miami's Annual POP Ball was drawing near, I needed a wig to go with my themed costume. This year POP 6 was all about the Power Of Patriotism - a very white powdered wig type of deal. I went shopping around for a wig and found a beautiful and absolutely scandalously fabulous Marie Antoinette wig at a small shop in Downtown Miami. The problem with said wig was the price tag - $80. I was a week away from my ballroom appearance and was a little nervous at the lack of finding a wig elsewhere, so I put my deposit down on the wig in Downtown Miami. A week later, on a trip to pick up a visitor and guest for POP 6 at FLL, I decided to poke around the downtown Ft. Lauderdale area. I stumbled across this wonderfully quaint costume shop called Costumes Etc. As soon as I walked in I felt the spirit of theater while gazing at the costumes racks full of costumes, props, wigs, masks, and so much more! Needless to say I was in heaven. I'm a Dancer who was raised in a theater world so you can imagine my jubilation. I found the perfect wig which Kenny, the proprietor, rented to me for 20 dollars! This wig was so much more scandalous and era specific than the Marie Antoinette one I had put a deposit on the week prior. He said he would rent it to me if I would call the other store and asked to get my deposit back. I was floored by the courtesy this merchant showed me. We got to talking and I pretty much decided that his job was a happy man's job, he heartedly agreed. My wig was a hit at the ball and I saved a couple of bucks, which is always a good thing. Next time you need a costume that makes a statement go visit Costumes Etc., you will not be disappointed. read more
