Stumbled upon this since it was near my hotel. To my surprise, the dishes were flavorful and interesting. The reviews all raved about the oxtail stew and garlic prawn, so that's exactly what I ordered. Oxtail was tender and delicious. The garlic prawn was bursting with flavor, but it was NOT prawn. It was mini shrimps (assuming it's frozen), which was quite disappointing. Shouldn't advertise "prawn" if it's small shrimps - I much rather they have 6-8 large prawns instead of a bunch of small shrimps. So would've given the place a 5 star, but the shrimp was misleading. When in Madrid, do like the Madrileños and Medrileñas do. Except that my stomach said lunchtime is at 1 pm. It was hard to find an open restaurant, especially when I was craving Rabo de Toro / oxtail stew! I ended up walking about 20 minutes to La Fragua de Vulcano which was open until 2 pm when it closes for siesta. The restaurant has a bar with main dining area and a smaller room. My server was pretty attentive as I was the only one seated in the smaller room for most of the time. The room is like a traditional Spanish tavern, with dark wood paneled walls, Spanish paintings and bullfighting posters. Scary gothic gargoyle cornices abound near the wooden beams. The Rabo de Toro was hearty and delicious with an amazing thick sauce. Oxtails were fall-off-the-bone tender. It was an epically huge, tasty portion, along with an equally huge pile of French fries. Along with a cup of soup, I was stuffed, but in a good gluttonous way. I'd definitely come back again for the Rabo! read more

My favorite tapas bar in Madrid. I always make a point to visit for at least a tortilla and a beer. Tortilla is great, huge ( a meal in itself) and only 6 euros. A portion of paella, the appetizer of potato salad, tuna and peas ( usually on the house) and I am sated for the day and usually a little buzzed but very happy. The boquerrones, calamari and abondigas are excellent too. Can't go wrong with the tapas. Service is great. If alone I sit at the bar and if with my wife or more I try to get a small table in the front. The staff hustles but is very friendly and gracious. The ambiance is old world tapas bar. It's a very old building, lots of wood and very Spanish, just off Plaza Santa Ana and next to the flamenco bar. The back room is where most tables are located but I've never sat back there except to know it's usually packed. You will love it, hopefully as much as I do. read more

La Fragua de Volcano is a taberna amongst a sea of taberna's in Madrid. It is located.right next to Tablao 1911 that has Flamenco shows. It has a very ornate exterior with pictures and art fired onto ceramic tiles. Inside is a typical eatery that is cozy and has big open windows so the restaurant is in open communication to the streets. I had the Gran Cocido de Madrileno. Having never eaten this traditional local dish, the way I describe it from an American perspective is deconstructed stew. The vegetables and meats are cooked separately and each cooked optimally. Then they are served with a side of rich broth. You combine the meats, vegetables and broth at the table. The flavor is mild with most coming from the natural flavors of the ingredients. It is a very hardy meal and I really enjoyed it. Depending on your appetite, one order could be shared by two people. My wife ordered the tomato salad and Ham Croquettes. The tomato salad was basically 4 or 5 full tomatoes quartered and covered in oregano. Olive oil and vinegar are served on the side. Plenty for 2 people. The croquettes were deep fried cheese, ham and mashed potatoes. Very delicious and also a large serving. We arrived at 7 pm and there was no crowd so our service was quick, which we liked in our American eating style. There are soooo many restaurants in Madrid that it is hard to say if you should go out of your way to make this place a destination; however, we definitely enjoyed our meals so it wouldn't be a bad choice if you are nearby. read more

Atmosphere is great, but I would rather have a place that is a dump with amazing food. Traditional olives in Spain are flavorful in a paprika sauce. What they served was clearly strained from yesterday's martinis. The squid was flavorless. The roasted vegetables were meh. The Iberico croquettes were mushy and among the worst I have tasted. Of all the tapas place in Madrid, this rank among the worst. Spent 70Euros and left starving. read more

Excellent service. The sir was so kind and helpful while we were ordering. 4 stars due to the fact that the place lacked cleanliness. The floors were full of crumpled napkins and it was not really that busy to just be able to broom it up. Also the he fact that it does not have any vegan options other than pan con tomate. I had to order lentejas "sin carne" since they cannot make it fresh ofcourse. It still contained pieces of meat, and as a vegan, I can say there are many many places that offer vegan options now a days, and unfortunately this is not one of them. I resulted to eating that since my family decided to eat there and that was the closest food I could get. The sangria was great, however, they are a little heavy on the salt with each food and vinegar. I would recommend telling them to not add so much salt as the pan tumaca, lentils, and my moms seafood platter was all very salty and too much vinegar. Visiting from USA. Oxtail was good- soaking French fries in the gravy - yummy. Reasonably priced. Had the Bruins/Penguins game on TV.

Went here for early dinner/tapas snacks and was very pleasantly surprised. Had the large prawns and garlic shrimp- both great but the prawns were the star. The tapas of the day was an egg tortilla kind of thing that was great and complimentary. We had €2 glasses of wine and a complimentary after meal drink that was sweet/syrupy. The service was very prompt, efficient, friendly and engaging. I had some allergen questions and they had a legend they gave me. The prices were super reasonable especially for the area, service was 10/10 and the food was authentic without a hefty price tag. read more

This little pub is amazing. It has indoor/outdoor seating. We had 2 pitchers of sangria they were delicious. We also ordered 2 paellas, I oxtail, 1 veal meatball, an order of calamari, I empanada, and a basket of bread. This shared for a party of 4 and the bill was $72.50. We discovered this place entirely by accident as we were walking past Plaza de Santa Ana in the evening, and were immediately drawn into the restaurant by a huge bowl of paella sitting on the bar that looked piping hot and delicious. Servers were scooping copious amounts of the paella onto plates and serving them to diners, and they were moving fast. Having taken our seats, we wasted little time in ordering a serving of the paella (seafood and chicken) as well as the garlic shrimps. The paella was very tasty and didn't disappoint, but the highlight to me were the garlic shrimps which were served bubbling hot from the kitchen and was the perfect compliment to our alcoholic beverages. We were so enamored with the paella and shrimps that we returned the next day for the exact same order and it was as perfect as the day before. This place is by no means the fanciest or cheapest restaurant around but the friendly servers and unpretentious but delicious food made it an all round fantastic experience. read more

A friend of a friend wanted seafood and since I remembered this restaurant from a trip to Madrid last year, we checked it out. He had his own seafood platter with mussels and clams and prawns and some other stuff I didn't recognize. I shared one and we had something similar but somewhat different as this one had fish on it too, unlike the other. One plate was called Parrillada Mixa and the other Parrillada Marisco. Both were pretty damn good. I'm not a seafood fanatic but enjoyed this one. The prices I found to be reasonable too - 22 Euro a plate and a glass of beer 2 Euros. The restaurant is located right off Plaza Santa Ana so you can go and say hello to Federico Garcia Lorca (at least his statue) before or after dinner. read more

This was without a doubt the worst tasting food I had during my entire time in Spain. The service was very friendly and we had a prime seat in the window but I would equate this to being the Spanish version of the American chain of Chillis. The Paella was mushy and flavorless (and I LOVE paella) while the tomato salad was massive and lacked any sort of inspired preparation. Exactly what you want it to be. Very casual, fast and delicious tapas (the fried anchovies were perfect), and vermouth on tap. The food was great! When we arrived we recieved an apatiser wich was cold potatoes with ail i oli. (It was also really tasty) We ate paella as mail course for only 6,5 euro's and the paella was wonderfull. The service was also really great and our waiter was super friendly.
