However, my Dominican friends love this spot & I can certainly see why. I got the mofongo de pollo & it was quite tasty, I love the dressing (I don't know exactly what to call it) that it came with. I shared a Mixed Platter appetizer with a friend, which included tostones, sausage, beef, pork, as well as chicken. The highlights were the satisfyingly crunchy tostones, juicy sausage, and succulent pork. For my main course, I decided on the Fish Mofongo, which was absolutely delicious! The white fish was perfectly tender with plenty of well seasoned sauce, full of bold flavor. The Mofongo was of excellent quality, and had bits of pork throughout. The mashed plantain was soft, with just the right consistency. The chocolate cake was tasty with smooth, rich, sweet chocolate frosting, along with moist cake. Service was solid. Our waitress was patient and accurate with the orders. Everything came out in a timely manner. My friends and I stopped by this restaurant after getting dropped off in the Bronx and saw that they had great reviews on Google. I've never had mofongo so I was very curious to see how it was! I wasn't expecting the ambiance of the restaurant to be as fancy as it was. I was expecting a local, casual joint, but the prices and ambiance said otherwise. Seems like someplace to go to celebrate or have a night out. The service was slow but I am going to assume it's because there was an enormous party right next to us. The food also took a long time to come out, but the flavor made up for it. This was my first time trying mofongo and I loved it! We had it with ox tail stew and the stew was amazing. It was sooo flavorful and the ox literally fell off the bone. The actual mofongo (pounded plantains) also had pork pounded into it and everything blended like harmony. The mofongo on itself wasn't as great and a little bland but that's why the stew was there! I think I would've liked it less if I got a dry meat with it 9/10. If could give this place a 3.5 I would. I'm Dominican so I'm very familiar with how things should taste, and the food here was subpar. The quantity was good but just lacked flavor. We ordered a couple mofongos (dry and bland) and sancocho (aso bland.) A lot of great menu options and they give you an entire avocado if you ask for that as a side which is nice. But honestly, you're in Washington Heights, you can have dominican food every few steps, unfortunately this spot didn't live up to the hype. Also it is important to note, that they do not serve mangu past 11am which is crazy to me since they serve mofongo all day. I didn't understand why they also couldn't serve mofongo con los 3 golpes, instead they wanted to charge every single item separately and give 3 of each thing which was too much food. 3 eggs, 3 salami, 3 queso frito...why? The downstairs side is divided into two sections. One side has a bar, and the other side looks more like a place for take-out. We sat upstairs, and it was not that crowded. The menus are on iPads, and our waitress was very nice and checked on us throughout our meal. I ordered the longaniza Mofongo with a side of fried cheese, and my friend got the churrasco Mofongo. I liked the Mofongo, but it was a bit dry, which is normal, so the extra garlic sauce on the side definitely helped. I liked that the Mofongo had pieces of chicharron, but if you're not into pork, this could be an issue. My friend said his drink was too strong but maybe he's a lightweight, I had a lemonade and it was very good. I'm glad I finally tried this place. A mofongo a populate disk in DR is made up of smashed plantains along with your choice of chicken, pernil (pork), shrimp, cheese, chicharron etc and the juices which the meat/seafood was cooked in. I order the chicharron one with some avocado in the side. The mofongo was excellent with large chucks of pork. It was sweet with just the right amount of saltiness from the pork. The chicharron was also delicious. The meat was savory and the skin was fried crispy without being burned. I also order a fresh and natural Chinola Juice that was very good. I first learned about mofongo when I became obsessed with green plantains and my Dominican friend told me to try it out. Unfortunately, it was years later when I actually ate mofongo-the first time was at Marisco Centro up the block from casa del mofongo. So I ate here yesterday with my friend. It was a Tuesday and pretty crowded. Music is loud and the lights are dim, I saw families, dates and singles eating. And the Food? Talk about an extensive menu! So many mofongs to choose from as well as other Dominican items. We asked for a drink menu and the waiter said there is none and that they can make any drink. I ordered a pina colada and my friend got a long island iced tea. We ordered mofongo con chicarron and de penil to split. The mofongo itself is kinda dry but it comes with this amazing garlic sauce that you can pour all over it. The mofongo has bits of pork in it and if you cannot eat pork you must tell the waiter when you order. The pernil and chicharron was on the side of the plate-generous hunks I must say that are perfect. Chicharron was nice and crispy and pernil was nice and juicy. I was unable to finish my dish and mofongo is not a good dish to doggie bag because each time you reheat it, it dries out. I can't wait to come back and order more mofongo and try mangu! I've been to La Casa del Mofongo a few times and it's just has a typical Dominican restaurant/home feel. The music can be loud coming from the bar but if you're far enough in the back you'll be fine. The hookah smell doesn't bother me and isn't that strong. I've always ordered the Mofongo with Shrimp a few times but I do think it's a bit overpriced. I know Mofongo is a lot of work and shrimp is expensive but $27 is too much. My sister ordered the sancocho, I tried it and it lacked flavor. My mother who's Dominican makes a better Sancocho. La casa del Mofongo misses the mark but it has potential. The wait staff could be a little more attentive as well. It gets a solid 3 stars. read more
