Music was extremely loud, thought I was walking into a dance club instead of a restaurant; overkill. Caught laryngitis the following day from having to talk loud over the music. We did ask to sit outside and was denied because we were told we didn't make reservation, even though there were lots of empty tables. The server mistakenly served red wine and then Champagne instead of Chardonnay when asked for it. Instead of saying "we don't have Chardonnay," she should have simply informed the customer. After our meal, we stacked our plates and placed them aside to signal the server that we were finished. We endured a 30-minute wait for our bill, which was an unpleasant experience. Additionally, we desired to depart promptly due to the excessive loud music, which was getting on our nerves. Definitely not our place to go eat out; very disappointed. After searching for a Hispanic restaurant, I stumbled upon this one on Yelp. When I arrived, I noticed it wasn't what I saw in the pictures, it was a takeout, I thought I was in the wrong place. I left and decided to come back and inquire about the sit down in the pictures, to find that it was located around the corner. We walked into a nicely decorated place to sit and dine. There are no paper menus, QR code menus. The young man that served us was really nice and helpful. Stopped in this weekend for a quick bite to eat. The place is small, but it was visually appealing and seemed like it had a nice vibe. We were seated quickly and our waitress was friendly and accommodating (we had a toddler with us that she was patient and kind to). I ordered coconut rice with garlic shrimp. So this past Sunday was my first time at Santiago Beer Garden. Even though there is room for improvement I can see myself coming back. I will start with the ambiance- very cute! Loved it. Music wasn't too loud and you could actually have a conversation. Service- like other reviews it was a bit slow. Although it didn't bother me tremendously as I was not in rush, I felt the waitress could have been more attentive. Whenever we needed something we had to wave her down instead of her periodically checking us. She had also added an extra entree and soda on to our bill. When we asked her to remove it as we did not order it, she did so with no hesitation. But also no apology like "I'm so sorry my mistake, let me remove that for you.". It's almost like she knew she had added and was just seeing if we would catch it. Not saying that's the case but came across that way. Food- food was good but not amazing in my opinion. I ordered the Churrasco and shrimp. The waitress never asked me how I wanted the steak cooked. I forgot myself until I received my entree and it was cooked well done. I didn't want to wait for a new entree so I did not send it back and I just ate it. It wasn't terrible but would have preferred it cooked Medium. But the actual size of the steak was a bit small considering the entree was $46.00. So beware on portion size. I ordered the passion fruit colada and all I have to say is it's is amazing! This is pure heaven. It was delicious without being too sweet or "heavy" like regular Pina coladas. Definitely recommend. I do want to come back and give this place another try as it was a cute spot and would like to try other entrees. read more

The food was fine (yay for mediocrity!), but oh honey, we are NEVER coming back. Let me set the scene: we were a party of 11, and yes, we made a reservation like civilized people. Five of us--including my elderly, disabled parents--showed up 20 minutes early. Big mistake. Apparently, this place runs a very strict "you must suffer together" policy, so they told us we couldn't sit down until everyone arrived. Not even Grandma with her cane or Dad in his wheelchair. So we were told to scram and wait outside. In the heat. Like a pack of wild party crashers. Mind you, the restaurant was practically a ghost town. Empty tables, including our obviously untouched reserved one, just chilling. But nope--rules are rules, and compassion is clearly off the menu. Finally, when our full group showed up (on time, mind you), they seated us--yay! But then dropped the bomb: we had 90 minutes to eat. Because nothing says "relax and enjoy" like a ticking clock of stress. I'm sorry, is this a restaurant or a speed-eating competition? And the cherry on top? We asked for coffee with dessert (like any sane human would), and they said--brace yourselves--they don't serve coffee in the summer. I repeat: a Spanish restaurant that doesn't do coffee. In any season. What is this, a crime against culture?! NEVER. AGAIN. Unless they start serving espresso shots with empathy. read more

Decided to try Santiago's after reading reviews and seeing the delicious food pics! I ordered the Pernil plate with the coconut rice. The plate came out luke warm overall and the rice was kinda dry and the beans in the rice was also hard and dry. I informed the waiter that the rice was dry and asked for some beans to go with it, which helped. But the side of beans was $7 or $8 which I thought was way overpriced, especially since it was mostly bean sauce - it was very soupy. I will probably try the white rice with beans next time. The saving grace was that the plantains we ordered were delicious and also the pernil was excellent. We also ordered tres leches cake, which was pretty good. We liked the ambience, although the music was a little loud and the chairs were not the most comfortable. It has a great vibe though, and the staff is friendly. The vibes here are immaculate and I can't think of any better location these days for spontaneous day drinking. I have felt for some time that East Harlem is one of the city's most underrated food neighborhoods, with a mix of new hipster entrants and long time Dominican, Mexican and Borinquen stalwarts. We sat out in the garden and enjoyed cocktails, which all packed a punch - I had the soju caipirinha. We shared the empanadas and plantain fries, which were both excellent - the plantain fries had an almost mochi-like texture. Anyway... it meant we got the pick of the house, and service was only for us. We were a group of eight... the location is an outdoor covered garden with heaters... they turned them on for us, so it was cold too start, then eventually warmed up. The decor was really cute with a beautiful painting at the end.. the tables were slotted, which many we lost a few pieces of cutlery.. the sangria was mostly wine, which all things considered is pretty good... it only had limes in it. The monfogitoes de bistec were tostones cups with slices of beef in them... the seasoning was good... but the meat was well done... so a bit tough for me. We also got the empanadas, they were pretty standard, nothing exceptional, nothing terrible.. the chicken one was made with white meat, so it was a bit dry.. the beef one was run off the mill, and I didn't get to try the cheese. You have the option of adding mofongo to any plate... we all did... it was a chicken mofongo, and came with a delicious garlic sauce... pretty addictive if you ask me.. the ox tail was decent... it came with 4 pieces, and I got the combo with the fried chicken pieces...3 cubes of them, they were perfectly seasoned and cooked. The churasco was a bit chewy, the fries were good..I was told the calamari was good. The oreo mousse cake was terrible! It was old, the mousse was mushy in all the wrong ways.. so not get this. Went with family to the wedding of the groom's family last Sunday 9/3/23. Judging from the description on Yelp, it seemed to be just another cuchifrito joint. Honestly, I wasn't expecting too much. I have known the groom, since he's a tween. The restaurant and staff did a fantastic job; making his and his bride's occasion, very special and memorable for everyone! It was an amazing experience!!! I've been to dozens of weddings and there's always some little glitch. NOT this time; everything ran smoothly. From the photographer and officiant's excellent service to the food and beverages. Everything was plated flawlessly and with Finesse! How often do you find micro greens on the plates? The place is well appointed, and the decorations are not over the top. There seemed to have been a server for every single table; who was aware of what was going on. Refilling glasses, clearing plates doing what an excellent server is supposed to do. Everyone's food came to the tables almost simultaneously and at the proper temperature. Everyone seemed to be satisfied with their choice. After the service and happy hour, which was outside, the main room was set up as a dining room and a dance floor. The music wasn't so loud you couldn't speak to someone next to you, which is pretty nice. Both mother-in-law's seemed very happy with the wedding. Everyone else was just happy, since there was an open bar. The only drawback, unless you live in the city and can take public transportation or walk; there is NO real place to park. A cousin to the groom found an App to reserve a space in a parking lot at 340 East 117th. St. When we got there the guy in the booth seemed to be in another world. It was supposed to be as late as you wanted to leave, but then he told us they close at 10:00 PM and to make matters worse even though we had people in the car, they could speak Spanish he couldn't understand them, and he spoke Spanish! Jason's Fishing Boat was great for sharing but the ratios of the shrimp, calamari, and plantain chips were way off. There were barely any shrimp (which was my favorite) but plenty of calamari. Matthew's Way is a bit pricy considering the portion but I loved it. The oxtail was tender, well-seasoned, and savory. The fried chicken chunks were nicely battered but a little dry. I would've liked if this dish included plantains which could've nicely balanced the saltiness of the dish. The yellow rice and black beans were pretty solid. The Passionfruit Juice was actually delicious; if you're looking for a non-alcoholic drink, I highly recommend one of their mocktails/juices. Highly recommend! read more

Me and my friend made reservations to dine in on a Saturday afternoon. We predicted we would be late and had to call to try to push our reservation and they were very accommodating about it. We arrived and it was a lot smaller than it appeared online but it was still cute! They have flowers and murals on bricks surrounded the restaurant. The decor looked just like photos. The first thing me and my friend noticed was the GREAT music. They were playing a mix of RnB, Reggaeton, and Dancehall which had us hyped the whole time. It seemed to get more busy after 4pm which makes sense. Our waiter was very welcoming and pretty attentive. We got the Empanada Trio which came with a cheese, beef, and chicken empanada. I'm not too big on cheese so I tried the beef and chicken and it was delicious, especially when you dip it in the sauce. We both finished our drinks and ordered a second round of the Passion Fruit Mojito and Santiago's Punch. They also seem to only pair the drinks with soju so keep that in mind! It tasted just as good nonetheless. For our food we ordered the Stewed Chicken and white rice with red beans and Grilled Chicken with white rice and black beans. We tried each other's dish and agreed they both had so much flavor! It tasted just like my local Dominican food spot. It was obviously more expensive for the look of the place but that's expected. The other day I wanted to grab #lunch and decided to try out Santiago's bc we were in the area plus I've seen so many friends have dined here before. I will say the vibe is definitely chill around lunch time (which was perfect for a weekday afternoon). . First of all, it's a beautiful restaurant. Even in the dead of New York City winter, the dining room like a summer garden party. And the food was super tasty. We loved all of our dishes. We had the empanadas trio, chicken chicharrones, pernil and churrasco. There was a problem, however. The food came so slowly. Adding to our pain, all of our dishes--both the appetizers and the entrees--came out at the same time, a full 45 minutes after we ordered. I had the opportunity to go back to Santiago's Beer Garden and I'm happy to say this time it was five stars across the board! First our server, William, was AMAZING - my girlfriend is STILL talking about the drink he suggested she LOVED it! He kept checking on us - was very warm and friendly and really seemed to enjoy his job. If you go there hopefully you'll get the "William Experience" too lol. We started with Empanadas as an appetizer - you get a chicken, cheese and beef. They were delicious. We had the steak with onions and the surf and turf for our entrees. There was a slight glitch with my steak (I asked for medium and received well done), but it was quickly rectified. We also had a side of the maduros everything was delicious! You have to walk around the back to access the garden area which is so cute inside. The seating needs an upgrade though by the end of it my hinneh was not happy the seats were so uncomfortable and the panel tables are a recipe for spillage. It was a prefix menu due to such a large party. The appetizers were empanadas trio. Tasty but not something I'd rave about. I had the bacalalo with yellow rice and beans. My bf had the chicken chunks and coconut rice. My food was sooooo good perfectly prepared and seasoned. He enjoyed his entre as well. Drinks: lychee martini and the mule both were made with soju bc the venue only has beer wine and soju . I didn't enjoy the martini and sent it back swapped for a glass of wine.
