Been coming here for years now and I love some authentic Puerto Rican food! One of my favorite dishes I always get is the chicken mofongo this is always on point! If you like mofongo this is the place for you! I also tried the fried pork chunks this last time I visited but this dish missed the mark for me. The pork was super tough and although it had good flavor I would probably not get this dish again as it's a hit or miss some days the pork is amazing and some days it's chewy and hard. I l love the different flavor Flan here and my top is the Flan de Queso it's so creamy and the perfect ending to my meal everytime! We had another large party to celebrate family being in town visiting the 98 year old patriarch. Our server was amazing and had fun with grandpa. She got our large order perfect despite it being ordered partially in Spanish partiality in English, partially in really bad Spanish, and partially being ordered by menu item number. She was great! We have been frequenting this establishment for over 10 years without a complaint until today. I ordered Carnitas of pork with a salad, a child's shrimp dinner and another order of Carnitas with mofongo for my husband. The restaurant was busy but they had plenty of waitresses to cover the floor. We placed our order with an Asian lady that not only did not have command of the English language, she also couldn't speak Spanish which 99% of the customers who frequent there speak. We waited over 45 minutes for our food with no explanation why the wait. My pork was so overcooked that the meat was a dark burnt brown and it was dry like cardboard. When we told the waitress she looked at the plate and said "you ate half we will charge you half or we can make you some to replace". Honestly I consumed 2 pieces hoping for it to get better and it didn't. I have never heard of such a response in my life and if I didn't have my 93 year old mother with me I would have made an epic scene, Mother's Day saved this lady! By the way when the bill arrived for $82 for food that was not consumed, and no deductions, we were so annoyed, that we paid and didn't leave a gratuity; something I have never done in my whole life! I've been here several times and each time the food is outstanding. We had the steak mofongo & shrimp mofongo with empanadas. I haven't tried anything other than the mofongo, but I would say that's their specialty. The portions are huge and enough for two meals. The service is a little inconsistent though. I have a number of Puerto Rican friends and every so often I ask them for good restaurants. One that's popped up more than a few times has been La Caison on North Armenia Avenue. They mentioned that this would be the place they'd take their serious dates, grandparents or bosses to because the food is expertly prepared and the ambience is one that emphasizes tradition. There is also a dress code so don't expect to be seated if you're wearing a tee shirt and have bare feet. I decided to go around 3 PM, too late for the lunch crowd and too early for the dinner patrons. Perfect timing. The seating arrangements follow true to the six feet of separation and the waitperson was wearing a mouth and nose covering. Although the interior is a bit small it is colorful. To your left as you enter, for example, there is a framed prominent family crest flanked by two original paintings, each depicting a Puerto Rican woman preparing food to cook. I included these in an attached picture because they give a true representation of the cooking - all down home and professional. I ordered one of their specials - a porgo frito or fried red snapper. It normally comes with sides of pink beans and rice but I requested platano fritos (ripe plantains) and a salad instead. The fish was tenderly done with each forkful smoothly separating the filet into bite-sized pieces. The experience was, to the best of my imagination, like getting the inside of my head and mouth massaged to the point where I could easily imagine myself sliding out of my seat. It was warm but not hot and very pleasantly digestible. The platanos, although not fried in butter, were moist and warm. I had no problem eating them and, in fact, had to convince myself to slow down. Their salad is a basic one with leaf lettuce, tomato slices, a few thin onion rings and some sliced green olives which you can drizzle over with their house peach-based salad dressing (no strong sugary flavor). I got a bottle of Prosecco to accompany my meal although they carry a good variety of wine and beer. read more

The seafood Mofongo came with half of the lobster tail, shrimp, salty fish, muscle. I was impress of my Mofongo serve with a bit wine base seafood broth. When you bite the olive they have cook with it, the wine juice came out and it is tasty and left wine fragrant in the mouth. This normally different than the Wikipedia description to prepare it. The broth base mix with the fried green plantain neutralize the salty of the broth. The two materials balance each other is the beauty of cooking. Good chef skill. The churrasco is ok. It can be better. Churrasco is Argentina food. Most of the time the Cuban restaurant prepare this dish better than anyone in Miami. You have choice with rice and bean or salad and sweet plantain. The service is good and friendly. However, the close out and bring the check is slow. This restaurant customer tender to speak louder due the natural of the Spanish customer. Food is good portion. I don't really want to give any star I was here for 3 hours because they just have one server. The server was great and so friendly, my review is not because of her. My bad review is because I order churrasco and they brought me something else which I eat because I was too hungry. My family had the same issue with their food and they also eat what the server brought because if not we all need to wait longer. When the check came they charge us a lot more because they said we order steak in salsa and not churrasco. The person in charge blame the server and said that she will need to pay for that, which it was not her fault because she wrote churrasco and I took a picture of the order that she placed. We won't let her to pay for something that it wasn't her fault. The chef, cooker, or who was in the kitchen made a huge mistake and they don't even made an arrangement. We ask for the manager or person in charge, but the Chinese lady said that the manager was absent. We finally ended paying more than $300 for food that we won't order. Specially the mofongo with 3 shrimps and 4 small pieces of churrasco in salsa, but they said that that it wasn't churrasco (no sense) which cost $34 and we didn't order that. I just want to let you know that this place is in a new administration and this administration don't know how to manage a restaurant. Because of this disrespectful and abusive situation the restaurant loose the guest that were in the entrance waiting for their table. They saw the abusive situation against customers and against the server. I want to apologize and give thanks to the server who I believe is from Uruguay or Argentina because of her accent, she was so nice and I wish her the best... My Yelp friend Sam has been trying his best to educate all of us about the deliciousness which is Mofongo, and I've been sampling the dish at many different Puerto Rican restaurants around the Tampa Bay area. In case you're not familiar, Mofongo is the gold standard of Puerto Rican comfort food, and very likely their national dish. Mofongo is a fried plantain-based dish, typically made with fried green plantains mashed together in a pilón (which is a wooden mortar and pestle), with broth, garlic, olive oil, and pork cracklings or bits of bacon. It is usually filled with vegetables, chicken, crab, shrimp, or beef and is often served with fried meat and chicken broth soup. During yesterday's marketing research trip along Armenia Avenue, Rich D and I agreed to add La Casona to our mix of restaurants because they offer all kinds of delicious Puerto Rican goodies, but truthfully we were both so stuffed that I decided to come back to La Casona for lunch today. La Casona is located along Armenia just a few blocks north of Hillsborough Avenue. The building looks bright and cheery, and it has it's own private lot which was filled with cars. Inside you'll see a number of 4-top tables and a large bar area. As with many other Latin restaurants, the weekend crowds are made up of tables of families coming together for their mid-day meals. The signage around the restaurant advertises La Casona as "El Pabellon del Mofongo" or the place for Mofongo, and that is why I went there today. The menu offers a delicious mix of appetizers, salads, asopao (or The big honkin' one-pot wonder bowl of soup), fish, seafood, meats, rice dishes, and the mofongos. I ordered Mofongo Relleno de Cangrejo which was stuffed with crab meat and a sautéed mixture of a creole sauce of tomatoes, garlic, onions, peppers, and white wine, and then covered with more lump crab meat. The stewed sauce was poured over the mofongo, and it provided an amazing dipping sauce. It was spectacular! To that I added a small side of Yuca Al Mojo which was chunks of melting rich boiled cassava smothered in tangy garlic sauce. What a delicious meal, and I am very excited to go back to La Casona next month for our Latin food crawl along Armenia. read more

Went to the La Casona restaurant for Mother's Day dinner. It turned out to be a big mistake, which is unfortunate since I have eaten here many times without any issues. Our waitress couldn't speak English nor Spanish, and she was terrible. My wife and ordered the cubed fried pork, the pork was over cooked, which made the meat dry and hard. I was starving so I fought through it, but my wife tried but after 2 or 3 pieces couldn't. We called the waitress over and told her the meat was overcooked. She then said my wife had eaten half and that she wasn't going to give us a full refund but would take half off. I told her she hadn't eaten half it was a couple of pieces. The waitress insisted so not to cause a scene and totally ruin our diner, we agreed half would be fine just remove the plate. We had my mother in-law with us and didn't want to upset her either, so we finished with desert. When the bill came she didn't remove anything from my wife's diner. Instead of getting upset and going through an uncomfortable confrontation we payed the bill. During diner the waitress forgot items to bring and didn't stop to refill our tea and water, another waitress saw our frustration and had to refill our glasses and she was so uncooperative with how she handled us was very frustrating. Casona is a small, modest restaurant located in a working class neighborhood in Tampa. They serve traditional Puerto Rican food. The atmosphere is quaint, tastefully decorated with scenes of Puerto Rico throughout. It's clean, organized and friendly. They keep up their standards. While every time I have gone they've been completely booked or close to it, you won't find screaming hordes of people. You won't find tank tops, cut off shorts, etc. I appreciate that in a restaurant. Is it fine dining? No, but it's nice to go somewhere that standards are maintained and required. There are plenty of food trucks for great food if you want to eat out in cutoffs and tank tops. The service is always pleasant, after a few visits they treat you like family. Sometimes it's a bit slow, but never to the point of being aggravating. But what makes Casona good is the quality of its cooking. Consistently good, flavorful food. You know you will get a great meal when you come here. It's a place where you take your parents and family when they come to town to visit because you know they won't be disappointed. The mofongo is a stand out here. The pernil is always moist and delicious. The rice is always fluffy and flavorful. The seafood dishes are nicely cooked using fresh ingredients. Their frituras (fritters) are always fresh and cooked to order. Have a hangover, try one of their excellent soups or sancocho (Puerto Rican stew). You'll feel better in no time! I finally found a truly authentic Puerto Rican restaurant in the bay area. The food was very close to the dishes my grandmother used to make. I felt like I was back in Old San Juan. I started with an order of camarones de la Casona. The sauce and shrimp was super yummy. It was served with toasted bread which was perfect for dipping. I also had the asopao con mariscos which was totally amazing!! It's described as a soup, but don't let that fool you. It is loaded with cod, shell fish, shrimp, scallops, and lobster. The lobster tail totally blew me away. It was so tender and had absorbed the wonderful flavor of the asopao. It's more of a rice stew than a soup. I could barely eat it all. In fact, I took some of it home with me and shared it the next day with my mother. She loved it too. My mother had the arroz con pollo and sweet plantains. It was full of white meat chicken which is great if you like white meat. My mother prefers dark meat. She'll ask for it next time. She also thought that the rice was too salty even though she liked the flavor of the rice. Other than that, she enjoyed it along with the side dishes. We will definitely go back again. I'll bring my Nuyorican family here the next time they're in town. There is no doubt they will like it just as much as I do. read more

The food was delicious. I ordered the Pollo Relleno a La Casona. I literally got made fun of by everyone at the table because I was scraping every last bit of sauce I could get off my plate. So good. We also had a group of about 15 people. Our waitress was new and spoke little English and we only had 1 person who is fluent in Spanish. And yet the service was pretty amazing. She worked really hard and made sure we were all happy. The owner also checked in on us from time to time and things were great. The waitress asked for my ID and I thought it was to verify that the credit card I was using belonged to me...NOT!!!
