I was excited to try this restaurant because of how busy it is all the time and wow I can see why it is. Once we walked in, we could tell the lunch rush was just starting! Many construction workers and other customers were taking advantage of their buffet option that the restaurant has! The buffet looked tempting but I wanted to try dishes off the menu. Next time I want to try their buffet option. My mom ordered a chicken and cheese quesadilla and I got chicken empanadas. Both of the dishes were delicious! Visiting Savannah and stayed in garden city. Found this little place off the main road. Reviews were good so we tried it. The green sauce was delicious!!!! Their hot sauce was delicious too. Their food was done quickly and seasoned well. The chips were freshly cut and fried tortillas which we love! We live 4.5 hours away in Florida and we wish we lived closer and could eat here. Excellent Mexican food. The place almost looked closed. It is definitely not fancy. I had the carnitas which was very tasty and HUGE. I took most of it with me for later. I went on a Sunday and their Menudo is pretty good and the flavor too. They offer you tortillas but they don't put hominy on the Menudo. All in all I had a really good experience here. I would suggest it over other Mexican food locals in the area. read more

Guys I know from soccer who are Mexican or Salvadoran have told me La Chalupa out in Garden City is where to get the very best, most-authentic, of Mexican food in the Savannah area. Obviously, with a restaurant so highly-recommended by people who should know, I just had to try it. The restaurant does look a little run-down on the outside and is in the parking lot of an even more run-down shopping center, in fact, the whole area really looks as if it's seen far better days. However, once inside you'll note it's very clean and the staff are very warm, welcoming, and friendly. Although I do speak Spanish the waitress addressed me in English and I just continued with English and her English was excellent: I bring this up only because I've had friends who are not speakers of Spanish in the past say they hesitate trying really authentic Mexican restaurants in the fear no one will speak English and I can assure you that won't be an issue here. The food is what we came for, though, and in no sense does it disappoint. I had the tacos and they were excellent. Served in the traditional way with cilantro, onions, and lime and two homemade salsas which were both bursting with flavor. Every aspect of these tacos was spot-on and ranks up with best I've had in places with much larger Mexican-American populations than Savannah or certainly humble little Garden City. Apparently they also do a lunch buffet Monday through Friday and I'm eager to try this: according to my waitress and friends alike it's pretty much the proverbial star of the show. read more

I came here for a late breakast a few Saturdays ago and had my worst restaurant meal in recent memory. I was excited by the reviews but totally let down. I ordered Huevos Rancheros and couldn't believe it when the young lady put down my plate. Two over-medium eggs each with about a tespoon of salsa on the yolks on top of two hard corn tortillas, a cone of rice, and beans so runny they were in a mini taco bowl. Served with a fork only. I ate the tortillas out of hand hand (very messy), drank the beans. Never got the requested glass for my beverage. I have been frequenting another local Mexican restaurant both during my off time and my lunch breaks from work, always getting the torta and/or tacos. At the time, it was THE best I'd had and would not accept anyone else around could be better. A friend at work told me to give La Chalupa a chance. Fridays are for my wife and I to spend a few hours together for lunch and shopping, so we dropped in for an early lunch. The first option presented was their lunch buffet, and although enticing, I already knew what I wanted to try. Thankfully we got there before the regular lunch crowd, as it got pretty busy by the time our food arrived. This was clearly a popular spot that I had ignored for far too long. My choice of a Torta Asada (beef sandwich) and Taco al Pastor was beyond perfection, and nearly gut busting. The al pastor was cooked just right, and their mild green sauce put it over the top. The Torta had a toasted bun, melted cheese, and a lot of flavor. Neither needed the green sauce, but I can never help myself. La Chalupa easily put themselves at the top of the list of my favorite Torta in the Savannah area. Anyone who has driven Hwy 21 on a weekly basis in the Garden City area has seen this place and probably didn't give it a second thought, like myself. This is called human error. Give them a try. They do fresh cooked, real al pastor on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and $1 al pastor tacos on Wednesdays. read more

We always give the new restaurants a chance, you never know where you'll find that diamond in the rough. I'm so sorry to have to report this experience as I dislike being negative, but I dislike spending money on food that is not worth eating. There was 3 adults in our party we ordered two basic tacos with rice and beans, large guacamole with our chips and one everything fajita plate. The one who ordered that said it was good. Butt he's like Mikey. Nuff said on that. My greatest issue is that the chips were flour tortillas with tasted okay, just not what I expected. The guacamole clearly came from a container that's like store bought, clearly not fresh. Also, not authentic, was the taco shell, it's the kind you buy from the grocery store with the flat bottom so that it stands up on its own. The ground beef fooling was not seasoned like you'd expect at every Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. The beans were on the edge of being spoiled, as in they smelled slightly sour, which then affected the entire meal. The rice was basic rice with nothing else in them, like pale or carrots or pass that you see at many Mexican restaurants. All in all a salt dismal experience. Would not go again and would not recommend. I'll stick with my usual restaurant. read more
