Plenty of seating capacity here to bring a group of friends! If the numerous customers speaking Spanish choosing to dine at La Canasta out of many area Mexican restaurants - then this spot must be legit. I was quick to be seated, and received helpful suggestions. No complimentary chips and salsa served here. I decided to give the Quesabirria a try: 3 birria tacos meal served with birria consume, $10.99. I admit I'm not a pro at deciphering authentic Mexican fare as I've never traveled south of the border. However, I find their tacos very good and different from tacos I've had before. They were graciously full of shredded moist beef and dripping with juices. The cheese was melty and it was topped with fresh onion and cilantro. We were looking for authentic taqueria fare and while it's a legit taqueria, the meats had little to no flavor. You'll need the salt, lime and salsas to doctor these up. I tried the steak, chicharrones, al pastor and cabeza tacos and all lacked flavor. The tortillas are not homemade, but the tacos do come with a nice assortment of toppings like grilled onions, radish, cucumber and some cactus/nopalitos. A little disappointing. read more

A little hole in the wall with excellent grilled quesadillas. Great service. I come here often for the real Mexican flavor. Good price too. Both the green and the red sauces are great. Be careful of the red one, it's got a good spicy bite to it. read more

One of my favorite authentic spots yo Hugo for tacos. Everything is always fresh and made to order. My go to are always the carnitas, the carne asada and barbacoa. The service is pretty quick. Not at all fancy but amazing tacos. read more

Certainly authentic Mexican food--and a good selection of baked goods as well as the restaurant dishes. A little out of the way for me unless I've at Lake Mayer Park but a really nice experience overall. They're prompt and while the menu isn't as extensive as I'd ideally like (my favorite Mexican places in Ocala, Florida have got my expectations a little high on that front I guess) it was still impressive. No tamales though, not even on weekends. To address complaints by a couple other reviewers about the service, I had not qualms about it. Yes, if you speak Spanish it is a huge help here. Some of the staff have very limited English and I'd say most customers are Hispanic or speak fluent Spanish--I didn't hear English at all whilst there. But even if you don't know Spanish it's worth a go, and you'll love your food. The staff are all very friendly and try to help. Knowing Spanish did let me inquire a bit further about the specials, though . . . I guess my point is, this is very authentic Mexican food so a knowledge of such is very helpful walking inside. This place is definitely authentic. I loved the atmosphere of the place. When my friend and I first arrived, we stood and waited to be seated for a few minutes, but there only seemed to be two servers who were pretty busy. Our server was very nice. My friend ordered chicken tostadas. I ordered tacos al pastor. Our food came out very quickly. It was all super delicious. There is so much more that I want to try. Muy sabrosa!! What a little gem! This Mexican bakery and cantina is the real deal. I love their cupcakes because I don't like frosting just the cake. If you love pan dulce for your cafecito then definitely come check this bakery out. They also offer food but I came here for the sweets. There's a variety and they give you a tray to grab all of your pan dulce. Oh and There's parking in the front. read more

This Latin bakery serves tacos, and they're nearly as delicious as any of the roadside joints I've enjoyed in Texas. Those places get four stars. I'm not sure why this bakery has tacos, but I'm glad it does. We chose tacos made of beef, pork al pastor (our favorites) chicken and "skinny pork", which was not my favorite, but quite silky and tasty. They're all served on corn tortillas and were nicely seasoned, but they were even better with a squirt of lime and dabs of guacamole sauce and a slow-burn orange sauce that may be habanero. For the late afternoon snack for two, consisting of four tacos, agua fresca, a Diet Coke and three pastries, we paid just $18.70 plus tip. The service was OK, but it's a bakery where customers are asked to grab tongs and a bag and serve themselves. It's an impressive bakery with more than a dozen different breads, cheese- and custard-filled goodies. The service was friendly but understandably not like a restaurant because the tacos are a bonus. So if you go, keep your customer service expectations in line with counter-centric service eateries. P.S. My theory is that the best and most authentic world cuisine restaurants have TVs on in the dining room, often airing programs from their native lands. There was a TV! read more

Panaderia La Canasta is a great place to get authentic Mexican street tacos. Service- The service is good. There is nothing really to out standing about it but there is nothing bad that can be said about it. Food- The tacos are very very good. I had barbacoa, el pastor, and tripa tacos. The barbacoa and el pastor tacos were absolutely amazing. Perfect amount of cilantro onions and the corn tortillas were very good. The tripas were extremely over fried to the point that they were completely burnt and almost inedible Setting- It is exactly what I have come to expect from a place that serves amazing authentic Mexican tacos. They owners put way more effort into the quality of food rather then the atmosphere and I wouldn't have it any other way. This is by far the only real Mexican place in Savannah I found my new favorite place. I have not had food like this since I left Mexico 7 years ago. Yes, I am a gringo that lived all over Mexico. Everything was made to order and I could not stop eating I tried every item they had on the board. The menu is small so they can keep the food fresh. I will be back for sure. Although this place does not have much curb appeal nor does it offer an elevated dining experience that you'll find at a high end restaurant, I find the food to be some of my favorite tasting mexican food in Savannah. I had a lot of trouble finding a place that served mexican food the way I know it supposed to taste out after moving to Savannah from Los Angeles. This place definitely hits the right tones of fresh authentic mexican food at very reasonable prices and best of all, you can grab some pan dulce for the home on the way out. read more

There are a lot of tasty and authentic ethnic food options in Savannah, until I walked into the Panaderia La Canasta, I had not found any authentic Mexican food. The moment I walked in the door I knew this restaurant was the one I had been looking for. Parties were seated at three tables and the only language being spoken was Spanish. The waitress didn't speak English, so she had to go in the kitchen to get someone who did. When the food came out I wasn't disappointed. This is the only restaurant in Savannah that I have been able to find authentic carne asada. It wasn't exactly like the carne asada I am accustomed to eating in San Diego, but still excellent. Don't get me wrong good tacos, but no customer service. I don't think the waitress understood me when I asked for jalapeño. If you put jalapeño in your sandwiches I can't get a side of jalapeño? Ok. Friend with me asked for avocado that never came. When asked for a bag while two of us are already holding one, we were told no. Pretty sure the only answer they have for any question is "no". Slowest cook time ever for tacos. Authentic, but all the places in Texas, even the knock off american-ized places, were better. read more

Went in for dinner and we were the only ones in the place. We had good service and the food is truly authentic Mexican fare. My wife and I had tostadas and sopes and they were really good. The atmosphere left a little to be desired but it seems like more of a lunch place so I won't hold that against them. 4 stars is being very lenient if you want the Hispanic bakery experience you will receive it here def. The baked good were delicious however the Tortas Chelsea and I received were missing key ingredients, mayo, guac, and a absence amount of meat in the sandwich. However flavor was still excellent. This is one of my favorite places. all their food is wonderfully authentic, not the greasy stuff you see in most places. Great baked goods, great tacos, great fried whole fish, amazing soups. the only reason for only four stars is that they changed the recipe for their tamales. they are not as good as they used to be. I buy them by the dozen to keep in the freezer for a quick microwave dinner or lunch. But the last batch, they didn't have much filling. I'll give them another go, after i talk with the owner. but don't miss out on all the other goodies. read more
