This place is the definition on hidden gem. This was my first experience with El Salvadorian food and I was impressed! Seems like a family owned place. Very very good food. To be honest we just ordered a bit of everything because some things I didn't even know what they were. But nothing was bad. The tamale was soooo good. As were the pupusas. My hubby and I love this place. Customer service is great. The food is fresh and the pupusa's are amazing. We also love the El Pastor tacos as well. Being from California we have tried a lot of different food, but these have to be some of the best pupusas we've ever had. They also rank number one as the best Horchata on our list. This is a very small hole in the wall place, but it's cozy and filled with delicious food. And I like that the menu is small. There's not a lot to choose from which makes it simpler. When, what do I find but a parking lot with multiple parking spots. I arrived at my new favorite restaurant, La Choza. Looking for a treat for your tastebuds? Salvadoran food. A restaurant cleaner than the health department kitchen kind of place. Check out the photos. Spotless EVERYWHERE. I ordered the chicken soup "and a piece of chicken." $16 and worth every penny. Dude who waited on me spoke perfect English. The food? Instant taste overload. A beautiful, powerful, full of meaning scented bowl of clear broth, cucumber slices adorned, arrived and is it ever hot. Wait for it. Keep waiting. The main course arrived four minutes later. A beautiful piece of chicken with rice, salad and four flour tortillas. It has a half-of-lime, if you're so inclined. Green sauce is quite spicy, BTW. Better loosen the belt a notch. Or two. The portions are even bigger than the photos make them look. They serve you well. Leftovers never smelled so good. I found La Choza on an on list list of the best Mexican restaurants in each state. How could this be? The "best Mexican restaurant in Nebraska" and I read about it first online? Well, obviously I had to go check it out. First, this place is Authentic. Capital A. I don't believe they speak fluent English, but the menu is in English and Spanish and the folks there are absolutely wonderful and friendly and so helpful. I actually consider this a plus. The restaurant is pretty small and cozy. Maybe 8 or 10 tables. I've been three times now and never had a problem getting seated. The place is comfortable and clean. I ordered the Combo #4. Two El Salvadorian style tamales and fried plantains. (About $7.50 or $8.00) The tamales were fantastic. Great flavor and very filling. The plantains were the best I've eaten. Absolutely a must stop! for some great food! I loved the El Salvadorian influences in the food. Omaha's Best Tacos were had here!!! There was so much flavor and such great tastes with all the pieces. they were out of the Barbacoa so I must return again. The Empanada's were also Fabulous. I do not think there was any breading with them and it was all plantain. I will have to confirm Also I had a banana milk shake that was perfect! I was in South Omaha for a appointment and have been craving some Salvadoran Pupusas for a while. I looked on yelp and found La Choza and decided to get takeout. They are open for takeout, were polite and fairly priced. I order 2 of each type of pupusa (cheese, fried pork skin and mix). Also we got 3 pastor tacos and a mango smoothie to go. I was more than enough food for 2 and everything tasted good. I would recommend and will return when we are craving them again. read more

What can I say? Umm, only thing I can tell you guys is that the tacos I had here were amazing!! There are other two taquerias really nearby and these are the best. The tacos run a little small but they are so full of flavor. I ended up having two orders of tacos. Each is $6. The atmosphere it's decent, not a 5 star restaurant in appearance, but definitely worth it in the food. At the end, that's what I'm looking for; quality of food. Stop 4 on our monthly Taco Trek. The stop was labeled as "Tacos El Paligro". After a couple trips around the block, we realized the name changed to La Choza The group made it and it appeared everyone was still happy we made the Trek. Tina and I split some tacos (I had pastor and the best tripa I ever had in a taco - she went with Asada and said it was wonderful), 2 papusas (La Choza has a nice mix of Mexican and Salvadoran. I went with the chicharron and she had the mixto. Both were WONDERFUL and the chicharron was way up with there in my book), 3 empendas (HAD to order as they were leche - a little too sweet for me but the rest of the group said they enjoyed them and they were all eaten) and 2 tamales (puerco Salvadoran style - WONDERFUL in my book). The staff was very nice (though very limited English) and the prices were very reasonable for both combo platters and ala carte. read more

This little joint is close in proximity to two other favorite taco places in south Omaha,: El Ray and Taqueria, so this is a hard sell for me when I could walk a block and dine at one of those places. The decor is minimal and the staff was friendly. There are complimentary chips that arrive with your table, and they were forgettable for me-chips were ok and salsa was nothing special. Along the thoughts of salsa, the verde and red salsas that come with the table for the tacos were passable. I ordered combo#1, which was 1 pupusa and 2 taco. I opted for chicken and pastor. No cheek or tongue meat here, which is another reason I rather walk a block away to dine. The taco meat was too juicy and i dont like when the tortilla is soaked and breaks apart. The Pupusa was better, I liked the slaw and the sauce that came with it. I think the best thing I ate here was the empanada, a deep fried plantain/banana with a milk custard filling. The people are super friendly! Drive thru ordered a carne asada burrito for $9+ which is fine if it was carne asada and guacamole but NO GUACAMOLE ANTHRRE WAS MORE RICE THAN CARNE. We moved to Omaha last year and we've had a heck of a time finding good Mexican food here. Everything has been modified to appeal to the gringo masses (we're gringos): drowned in sauce that is overloaded with tons of salt and smothered in oily cheese. If you can't hang with the fact that the server doesn't speak English, this might not be the place for you. It didn't bother us at all. To say the decor is simple is an understatement. No big deal. I ordered the combo #2: 1 chicken tamal and 2 carne asada sopes. Best tamal I have ever had. It was wrapped in what I think were plantain leaves and then foil, and steamed. The masa was super moist instead if on the drier side! My bf hates tamals because of the dry masa and he said this was the first tamal that he ever liked. He ate several bites and usually won't eat even one. The sopes were a perfect balance of all the ingredients and the carne asada was excellent. The bf had whichever combo is three pork tacos with rice and beans. I don't like pork but he loved the tacos and devoured them. The beans are different; they're basically pureed but that goes perfectly with the fresh homemade rice. Nothing was over-salted! Everything was seasoned perfectly. The red and green sauce-style sauces were yummy. You know how sometimes you're starving and a new restaurant seems awesome while you're eating, but then, later, you realize that it was only 'meh'? Love this place, I moved here from Costa Rica and it's hard to find authentic hispanic food. The tacos and pupusas are to die for and the tamales are my favorite (word of warning - these aren't Mexican Tamales they are the ones found in Nicaragua / Costa Rica ect - so much better). Yes, it is a hole in the wall and it's very much a mom and pop operation. Also most of the customers are local hispanic workers - which vouches for it's authenticity. If you want to eat delicious, authentic Mexican food your best bet is to stick to these 3 simple criteria: A. That it be a small, "hole-in-the-wall" place you could easily miss if you weren't looking for it. B. There are mostly (if not only) Mexicans eating there. C. There are women cooking in the kitchen. The first place we found that met these criteria was La Pena in Des Moines but we have since moved to Council Bluffs. Fortunately, as we discovered yesterday, La Choza in South Omaha also meets all three AND they serve delicious Salvadoran food! Bonus! Note: This is Mexican food of a completely different order than what you'll find at the garish, Mexican theme park restaurants in strip malls. For one thing, nothing is smothered with cheese, and if it is, it's the crumbly queso cheese and not Monterey Jack or Cheddar. I could go on about the details of our meal (in this case lunch) and having the feeling we were more than welcome by everyone (we sat outside on the small patio) but I'll just say this; if you know what it's like to eat food so good it makes you feel all warm and happy inside (think first kiss with someone) as well as giving you a sense of privilege to be eating it with the people who invented it, enjoy making and eating it, and take pride in sharing it, then I can tell you you'll find that similar experience at La Choza. Oh, and I'll also say: 3-day marinated pork (information offered voluntarily by the cook), pineapple slices on the tacos (you haven't lived until you have this combination), homemade hot sauces (including a smooth, bright green sauce with avocado) and long, fatty strips of steaming pork belly (we saw this on someone else's plate but will be ordering it next time). To correct Yelp, this should really be classified as Mexican AND El Salvadorean food. Not much sitting space, as expected of a hole-in-the-wall. I really wanted to like this place, I've heard great things about it & heard the food was good. We went there on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Here's a list of everything that went wrong: 1. I ordered water- When I received the water, there were pieces of something, who only knows what, floating in the water. Gross. But, I was willing to overlook that if the food was good. I ordered a bottle of water instead. 2. The waitress didn't speak English... So she said. She understood it enough to take our order, which she got wrong & the cook/manager had to come out to speak to us to get it right. When the cook came over, she brought over a menu that had been sitting in soapy water, which then proceeded to drip all over me. Even grosser! 3. We ordered plantano frito as an appetizer, which didn't arrive until we were pretty much done with our meals. We had to ask for it several times, but each time the waitress would just shake her head at us & say "Sorry, I don't speak English." 4. The meals didn't come out all at the same time, they came enormously staggered. So part of our party of 7 was still waiting for their meals while others were finishing. Overall... I would not recommend this place to anyone. Horribly mismanaged, the food isn't good enough to make up for it. read more

La Choza is a favorite stop for me. I work in South Omaha so I frequent all the best taquerias in the area and come back again and again to La Choza for its blend of Salvadoran and Mexican cuisine. It's true the kitchen is small so when it's busy it can take awhile for the food to arrive but the service is always friendly and the food is fantastic and worth the wait. This is the BEST Hispanic food I have ever eaten, hands down. Everything I have ever gotten has done nothing but amaze me. Everything's perfect. The texture, taste, smell, everything! They are a bit tiny, but the taste just EXPLODES in your mouth. 4 tacos should fill you up, well for me it does and I'm kind of big. If not order more! I had the al pastor, asada and barbacoa tacos. Each of them were REALLY tasty. If you think Chipotles barbacoa is good, you'll rethink that when you have barbacoa from La Choza. I also had this thing called Pupusas. You know how pancakes look? It's like that but made with flour I think stuffed with chicharron and cheese, bean and cheese, cheese, cheese and lorroco, or you can have cheese chicharron and lorroco. All my family members never had a pupusa before, but now it's our favorite thing ever.
