I can't stand when a "Tex-mex" restaurant has a very Hispanic name. When I hear La Cocina, which translates to my kitchen, I'm envisioning home cooked meals. It should be on the sign advertised. Please don't serve a breakfast menu that's only served Saturday and Sunday. Your prices are ridiculous. 1 taco is 3.99?!? You have to be kidding me. Your service was trash for the morning shift. My father and I were waiting for someone to take our order and I ask the waitress, "Can you take our order?" She looked at me and said,"No, he's going to take it." And points at the host. So I'm confused! You can't tell me that you're being paid just to place chips and salsa on the table. You're suppose to be a working team. If he's getting drinks, you can take the order while the other waitress gets the chips. It shouldn't matter who takes the order. I really wanted to like this place after a friend recommended it. My husband and I went just before rush hour. The service was good and the food tasted okay, however, my food was cold and his margarita was watered down. I am not a margarita person yet I could still tell that it was watered down. The salsa was cold too as if it had been in the fridge. I understand some places serve it cold but I like places that serve it warm. The tortilla chips were pretty good though. read more

Our visit tonight was not good and after reading the recent reviews I'm not surprised. First we walked in and we were not greeted, we were told by a rude girl hostess just pick a seat. No smile, welcome anything. Then we sat down and I took my mask off and I said omg what is that horrible smell. It smelled worse than a nursing home I'm not going to lie. Then our waiter was very rude, our chips were disgusting and stale like they were a week old. The salsa was not good and cold. No flavor. My husband's margarita was not good all you could taste was the alcohol and there was way too much in it. No salt or limes with it. $6 for a small margarita that didn't taste good. I ordered the crispy tacos and my husband got the enchiladas. Our toddler got the chicken nuggets. When I got the tacos right away I could tell they were extremely soggy and the hard shell was soggy disgusting with grease. My husband's enchiladas were full of grease even his beans! I told the waiter, all he said was "ok". Didn't offer to make it right or offer me another dish. I'm also pregnant so I went without eating because he didn't offer to make something else I could actually eat that wasn't cold and disgusting. He took it off the bill and then charged us for my soda. After I told him about my tacos he went and got our check and set it on the table and didn't say anything but waited for me to get my card out before he walked away. He obviously wanted us out of there. No have a good night nothing. He didn't say a word as we left. Terrible costumer service and I kept a smile and was very polite to him too. Great Tex-Mex at a great price. A friend took me there a while back, and I have been back twice. The ribs are great! They put a little too much sauce on them, but you can scrape that off. They are tender and moist! The Bonita sampler platter is a great way to try a couple of appetizers, and the ribs. Thursday is enchilada day with $3.99 enchilada plates. Bargain price for good food. Is it real Mexican food? Not really. Is it really good food at a good price? Absolutely! And that is all that really matters. read more

I probably will not be going back to La Cocina. My biggest complaints: - queso was terrible, reminded me of concession stand queso. The kind from the can. - the wait staff didn't have it together, lots of confusion and long stints of not even looking over at the table to see if we needed something. I'll gladly flag you over if we need you, but you have to look at us for me to do that. - two employees were chatting away right by our table. I may not hablo Español, but sadly I do know when you are cussing in Spanish. How did they know we didn't speak Spanish? I have a real problem with people using fowl language (no matter the language) in front of my kids. - the enchiladas were very disappointing. tasted like they were made in bulk with no care to how they may taste. This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond/Rosenberg! The service is always very friendly and prompt. Your glass is never empty, your chips runneth over! The BEST carnita's ...best!! My only complaint is that you can only get them on the appetizer plate which is way too much food, but TWIST my arm to take them home with me! The restaurant is always neat and clean and the restrooms too. You can sit inside or outside on nice days and the music is never too loud or intrusive and they have great tea and queso! So my husband and I eat here ALL THE TIME! at least once a week. However, today I was here with my coworkers and had the worst, and most rude service ever. Our servers name was Phillip, (highly do not recommend this man) and every time we asked for something he stuck his hand up and pretty much told us to wait. I also heard him complaining about us to the table next to us! There was a server named stephanie there who he pretty much made her do everything for him, (I tipped her even though she didn't serve us) and she was very apologetic. Struggled between 1-3 stars here because I've been here many times and my experience varies that much between each visit. Attempting to bring take out or deliver often results in moist and mushy cold food. One time, after leaving a take out order, I had my food sitting in a box under a shelf which the staff failed to hand to me and I had to collect it myself. Before I could exit the building, hot water spilled out of the box and all over me in front of other customers. I later found out that the containing with soup had been punctured. I would have left a worse review, but the quality of service and food is actually considerably better when actually consumed on site. Stopped by here for lunch today. Place was pretty packed. I ordered off their lunch menu, 11am-3pm, which had about 20 items for about 7 bucks or less. Service was a little slow but not a huge deal. Gave us plenty of clips to snack on. I ordered the El Burrito with chicken. Good size burrito covered in cheese sauce with a side of beans and rice. I will say it didn't look too good covered in all the cheese but I inhaled the whole plate in about 7 minutes. I felt like I was on Man Vs. Food. It reminded me of delicious comfort food. Oh and they have Bud Light draft on tap for $1.00. If you ever are in the area I would say try it out, I know I will. read more

My wife and I took a date night out for dinner and a play. I saw this place on Yelp and thought we should try it out. It's not very big but the food and the service sure do make up for that. My wife got their fish Cancun(fish in a foil pouch) with vegetables and black beans. She said it was great and the taste I had confirmed that. I had their version of surf and turf, 4 grilled shrimp and a piece of beef fajita, with rice and charro beans. It was fantastic. A house margarita topped it off. Myself and my entire family use to really enjoy this restaurant however, for the past few years it has been on a steady decline. The staff has always been wonderful, however, the owner started raising prices to an absorbent amount and has made changes to the restaurant that is not customer friendly. Our latest visit was the most bizarre yet and has pretty much confirmed we will not be going back under any circumstances after years of dining at this location. Keep in mind the owner and the staff know us very well as we have dined here for years when it was a good place to dine. On our recent visit we stopped in for a small bite to eat, we ordered the nachos and thought that, and a few other small items would be enough. The restaurant just switched to Pepsi products which I hate so since we dine here so much I had an understanding with the staff that I would buy drinks for the entire family but I could bring in my coke can product and would pay for my cup of ice for my drink which they charged me for a drink, I was fine with that. The owner explained to me Pepsi cold called them one evening and offered them a new soda machine to make the switch so he did. No big deal, his decision. That said, our nachos came to the table and there were 6, yes 6 chips in the plate with refried beans and a small bit of cheese on top, no meat. I looked at a menu and saw he had gone up on his nachos and reduced the portions considerably. 6 Chips at 8.00 a plate comes put to 1.33 a chip.... it's almost laughable. I flagged down the waiter and explained we were not going to pay 8.00 for 6 chips. He apologized and took the plate away. A few seconds later the owner comes to our table and he was very aggressive to my wife and myself. He asked me in a very hostile tone "how much do you want to pay for the nachos a dollar"? I tried to keep my voice down and not escalate anything as there was a few tables occupied , I simply stated I would not pay 1.33 per chip he was asking and that the price was outrageous , the menu did not show how many chips were on the plate and we assumed it would be like most restaurants that has the chips piled and the beans and cheese on top. After I explained how we felt about the price gouging the owner was determined to make a scene. He began to go on about the quality of ingredients he uses and I said, well, it's only 6 chips refried beans and a small bit of shredded cheese and not very much of that. The owner then sits down at a table next to us and glares at us and tells the waiter to give him the nachos as he will eat them. He then proceeds to stare at us while eating the nachos making comments to us. He then gets up and tells me he will pay for my coke.... which is bizarre as I bought it in with me as he only serves Pepsi. They he says he wants to buy us all a margarita, which we decline. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse a roach scuttles under our table as the owner is standing there, he lifts our table cloth and begin stomping under our table to kill it. Once he looks under our table and confirms the roach is dead, he put his entire leg under our table to fish it out with his shoe and slides the crushed roach out the door. No apology no embarrassment, no shock, nothing, he simply goes back to insulting us about the nachos and me bringing in my own coke product. This use to nice place to have lunch or dinner but it seems the owner is losing his grip on his business. There is more competition in the area now and he feels the pressure. He has not gone up just a little on his prices they have gone up quite substantially as 5.00 to 8.00 dollars a plate higher. The bottom line as a business owner you don't treat regular customers who have been dining at your restaurant for years with hostility and you don't look for escalated confrontation with any customers, that is not acceptable. While it is sad, we will never be dining here again due to the owner's aggression and hostility, it is for the best. There are too many other restaurants nearby that still appreciate their dining customers. The staff at this restaurant is excellent and it's a shame their owner seems to be losing his grip on reality. It will be only a matter of time before they close the doors for good. They also have not kept up with cleaning of the restaurant. The air filter vents are almost black and needed to be cleaned years ago, the blinds have at least 5 years' worth of dust and have spiders and other insects such as flies in the window seal. Slowly this once great neighborhood restaurant has fallen on hard times and the owner is running off the few regular customers, he has left...how very sad. read more

Passed by this spot many times but didn't decide to stop in until recently. In short, this overlooked spot is off the main highways but it's well worth taking the time to find it. As Tex-Mex goes this is one of the best restaurants in the area because of the rich flavors... these guys don't skimp on the seasonings, which is good! I come here a lot and really enjoy the food. It's usually quiet and not terribly busy. I've tried a lot of the menu and am always happy with my meal. I especially like their refried beans since I'm disappointed with other restaurant's rf beans in town. I usually get enchiladas of some sort, but the burritos & chimichanga are yum. I have heard twice now people complaining about the margarita on the rocks, but then they trade for frozen and are happy with it, so there's that. Enjoy! read more
