We used to go here pretty regularly because it is so close to our house. The service had been very good and the food had been ok, but after tonight, it will be a while before we return (if we return!) First, it took the waiter forever to get our order. I hadn't eaten anything all day and was hungry. They had a new item on the menu that I was excited to try. , "Nicaraguan style butterflied charbroiled tender beef filet basted in chimi churri." When they brought the food out, they had everyone's order but mine. The waiter said mine would be out shortly. I didn't get my order until my family was done eating their meal. Because of the delay, the waiter said he would take care of my meal so I said ok and patiently wait for my meal. What they brought me was nothing like the menu described. Instead of a "filet basted in chim churri", I got a small, thin chewy piece of skirt steak about the size of a whataburger patty....certainly not a $15.99 plate! The menu also said that it came "served with gallo pinto, sweet & green plantains with chimi churri". Instead of gallo pinto, I got a small bowl of black beans that were not seasoned. The plantains were served plain without any seasoning or the chimi churri as described in the menu. I think they put the meat in the microwave because the ceramic plate was extremely hot. The only reason I ate any of the beef is because my stomach was growling. After a few bites, I decided it wasn't worth the calories. It was too chewy, bland and way over cooked. I'd rather have a peanut butter sandwich at home. I'm not one to usually make a big deal about my meal but I did point out to the waiter that what was served was nothing like the menu described. When the waiter finally brought us our check, he had not taken off my meal or discounted it at all as he said he would. My husband didn't say anything but I'm sure the look he gave the waiter made him decide to take action. The owner of the restaurant was there and we saw the waiter go talk to him. The waiter brought us a revised check with $6 discounted. We never asked for a discount or verbally complained but I was also disappointed that Andres didn't take the whole charge of my meal off the ticket....I waited almost 20 minutes for my plate, my family was done eating, and they didn't serve what was on the menu. I was very disappointed that the owner didn't come to the table himself to apologize, as we have been regulars for over 5 years. If the owner is not concerned about customer service, his staff won't be either. The quality of the food has gone way down, it appears they are cutting corners in quality but not cutting prices. For the same price, I could have had top quality beef with fresh ingredients at Lupe Tortilla . Next time, we'll make the drive to Sugar Land. read more

This is not Mexican food; it is not even Tex Mex. I found better Mexican in Seattle. I highly doubt anyone who works in the kitchen would eat this flavorless crap at home. I doubt there is even cumin back there. I don't understand how the cooks can make this food without laughing at the stupid people who continuously eat it. I had the La Sirena and that dish was just a joke; Cilantro was nonexistent. The salsa is sad but child friendly. The guacamole is another bland joke. The cheese enchilada was flavorless. Oooh the beans were not bad; not the refried ones (sad). I am not happy. Maybe I will go back one more time and see if I can get some real Mexican food from this place. read more

The salsa and the tortillas are made perfectly. I would come back just for the salsa. The fajitas are standard fajitas, as are the rice and beans. It would be better if the onions were sauteed until they are caramelized. They are more on the raw side than what I'd preferred. I have 2 complaints on an a specific employee at this restaurant. He works behind the bar and serves tables. His name is Carlos. First I had to get my own ice from the bar after ordering margaritas on the rocks and getting a couple of cubes of ice. Second, when a customer walks in your restaurant and specially says hi to you, say hi back. It is unacceptable not to greet your customers in a nice manner. Full disclosure, I did not actually eat the food here (yet). However, my friend I sent it to said it was awesome! The reason I am writing this review is the customer service I received and how amazing it was...I wanted to send a friend of my dinner after she had a baby and to my surprise not many restaurants/places would deliver in Richmond other than pizza and Chinese. Well I came across this restaurant and it had good reviews so I thought I would call to see if they would work with me. The owner went over and beyond! From delivering outside of his normal area for me and actually delivering it himself. I am so glad customer service has not been completely forgotten. La Cocina has been our go to place for close to two decades. Sadly, it's lately been inconsistent in service and quality, which combined with a big price jump is not a good thing. Our $12 salads today (which were $8.99 just a few months ago) featured scanty cheese and browned iceberg lettuce. Chips were stale and obviously not fresh for a 1:00 p.m. lunch. Service was lagging as well. Delivery service has been inconsistent as well, with some nights arriving right on time, but other nights arriving well over an hour late, or with missing items. read more

Over 1 year ago the quality of food was alot better but lately their food is not worth the money. For the last 3 times we ate the fajitas, the steak meat was tough and chewy. In addition, that the owner needs to take some courses on people skills and good customer service. He does not know how to talk to people and is very rude!!! And don't even get me started with their delivery services, where the take very long and the food arrives extremely cold and they mess up the order, so NO thank you!! We definitely will never eat from this restaurant ever again, and will never recommend them to anyone. There are many mexican restaurants in the area and at the beginning La Cocina was good but after more than 1 year it just lost the flavor and the quality. And again, it is never worth to talk to the owner because he is sooooo rude! The service was good and the food was alright, but as we sat in one of the tables next to the divider so we can watch the game and me and my husband got a little show too we over heard the owner being so rude to his employees for no reason its very disrespectful for us as a costumer to see how the owner treats the employees who do a awesome job. I have eaten here several times and I'm not a big fan. Its okay if you're in a bind and really don't want to cook, but the food is questionable. As in, how fresh it is, what they microwave etc. another thing I noticed is their consistency. Each time I've gone it's been different. One occasion the salsa is watery and flavorless, the next spicy, same with the queso. The shrimp dish I had was overcooked, the bacon burnt. The lettuce looked a little less than fresh. Above average Tex-Mex. I've had both breakfast and dinner here (including take out) and the food is good (especially their tortillas--you can tell they're handmade in the kitchen). The service is always excellent, with friendly wait staff and quick delivery of food. Prices are reasonable and you get a lot of food. (Fajitas for two provides enough leftovers for at least another meal or two after.) Only complaint would be I don't love their red salsa (I haven't tried the green yet), and the queso is literally just queso with no real flavor. Horrible food!! Torta was drowning in water! Someone forgot to dry the lettuce and I ended up with more of a soup.

We used to regularly go on Mondays when they had their 2x1 fajitas for $12.95. Great deal and great food but we tired of it. Also, portions got REALLY skimpy, with the guacamale being barely a tablespoonful and the Mex. rice grains being spread out so as to give the impression of a larger portion. That kinda chintziness usually suggests to me that they may be cutting corners in other parts of the meal. Too many Tex-Mex restaurants in the area for me to eat with suspicion as to what quality food I'm putting in my mouth. Their weekend breakfast is good and cheap. A neighbor friend of ours suggested we try this place when we moved here 3 yrs ago. I consider myself a tex-mex snob as I grew up in South Texas. The food is the best around the area and for the price, you can't beat it. We tend to head there about twice a month and after the first 6 months, the waitress(Maribel) does not have to ask what we want if we are ordering breakfast or are there on Wednesdays. Well, not true, she would ask if it was going to be two Wednesday tacos or three!!!! The green sauce hits the table first with the chips if my wife is there. (She loves the green sauce) And if she is not they bring the red sauce first (my favorite) With only two hands, one of the sauces has to wait for the second trip (Happy Wife, Happy Life) We are a family of four with two children so you can imagine how picky our order can get. "Cut this and add that" should be tattooed on our foreheads. She knows what to add and what to cut and NEVER gets it wrong. Yes, there are times that the service is a little slow, but if you want hustle and bustle and pay double/triple the price, go into the city. Bottom line, we feel like family when we go there and are always greeted with a smile. Here's a hint for this restaurant and maybe for life, be nice and use people's names and doors will fly open for you!!!!!! Oh and try the Chicken gravy!!!!!! read more
