I trust Dr. Miyamoto completely. I was a patient of his for years, but due to insurance reasons I had to switch dentists and I really regret it. The La Costa office is incredibly clean, comfortable and almost always on time. The office itself looks like a spa and I come out feeling relaxed. (Ironic, I know). The biggest reason I love the office is Dr. Miyamoto's bedside manner. He is incredibly calm, gentle, thorough and is a great listener. Instead of having a nurse or clerk explain things I need, he takes the time to explain in detail what is going on with me so I understand. I have never felt that he was trying to sell me on anything. I trust him completely. I am now on medical, and unsatisfied with the dentists provided to me. I have called the office and Dr. Miyamoto has been gracious enough to offer me a second opinion with procedures other offices recommended. His office is not cheap, but you are paying for quality. When I have the means, I will be back at his office in a heart beat. read more

I've gone to the same dentist for over 2 decades and got new insurance and my dentist wasn't in network so I came here. What a mistake! I rarely have any issues with my teeth and I left this office feeling like my entire mouth is going to crumble into pieces. From cavities to "potential root canals" (conveniently receiving an oral surgeon referral to their friend in Carmel valley), teeth grinding down to nothing, bad gums, etc. You name it, apparently it was happening. I actually cried after I left not knowing what I was going to do. They were quoting tens of thousands of dollars worth of work even with insurance. I decided to go back to my usual dentist and just pay the difference for out of network. His office called La Costa Del Sur several times to try and get the X-rays they took of my mouth and they'd never answer or return his calls. They didn't return mine either when I was trying to get the X-rays. So I had to take new X-rays and my dentist could not believe what I was told. He was in shock and said they should be reported for malpractice. Nothing was wrong! A bit of time has passed since that appointment and my mouth is completely fine. read more

I really dislike leaving poor reviews but I have to share my experience here for others to be informed. I have gone out for second opinions for the long list of "issues" that Dr Phi claims need to be addressed in a multi year plan and they are untrue - gum disease, cavities, cavity replacements and more. I visited this office approximately 5 times over the year and every time, I have been stressed out, feeling terrible about my heath and in so much pain. This includes very harsh scrapping of my gums to make them swell/bleed to claim that I have gum disease to accidentally pinching and cutting my lip with a device during a procedure and scolding me for flinching after the injury. I am so glad that I stopped the visits at this office and have found a safer, more professional place to go. read more

Completely inept, that is how I would characterize this practice. I first contacted them via their website. It didn't work, no return email or phone message. I next called and spoke with someone there who sounded really rushed. They took my information and promised a call back. When I hadn't heard anything after a couple of weeks, I tried again. Still no answer during working hours but several days later I did hear from one of the dentists. I provided my email and was promised contact, but again nothing. When I visited I was given the run around about having the "wrong" insurance. Dealing with these folks was a complete wasted of my time. read more

I was expecting a good experience since the office looked nice (waterfalls, zen atmosphere). However, Dentist Tiffany Phi had terrible "bedside manners". If it has been awhile since your last dental visit she will let you and your children have it with various put downs and exclamations of "Ugh! You need braces!" All while her and her assistant look at you with facial expressions of disgust. She was rude and disrespectful to my children stating, "I thought you were epileptic because your gums were so swollen". Also, phrases like: ugh and terrible kept being said. To top it off, you will be charged for add ons that are mandatory to recieve that will not be covered under your insurance. At this point you are probably thinking that maybe this was a reaction from my bad hygiene. However, my teeth were so "overbrushed" that the gums were receding and my children and myself brush our teeth 2-3 times a day. We live in a wealthy community and I am educated, my house is clean, and I am a good mother. Therefore, this reaction from her was completely unwarranted. Needless to say, she left a bad taste in our mouth! read more

I've been going to Dr. Phi and Dr. Miyamoto for almost two years now and am very happy with the results. I've been to quite a few dentists because of frequent moving and am very pleased with the results and methods that they use. I put off a number of things I needed done to my teeth because of fear but was able to get them all resolved with Dr. Phi's encouragement. Others indicate they are put off by her chairside manner but if you want the honest assessment, she will give it to you directly. If you like being poo-pooed, this isn't the place for you. As far as insurance goes, I've had to pay out of pocket quite a few times simply because my insurance sucks. I have asked about some of the things done that insurance wouldn't cover and was told that the reason is that studies had shown the additional stuff improves the chances of not having a root canal. I'm all for less root canals after having one elsewhere. As an example, when I first started going to Dr. Phi, she said my crown over the root canal had a problem and she wanted to redo the crown. When she took the crown off, she found that my last dentist had forgotten to take out the medicine soaked bandage. I could tell she wasn't making it up since it smelled nasty and I saw it come out of my mouth. Quite gross. I'm happy she found it. If you want a quick in and out, you won't find it here. The visits are all quite detail oriented as I'd like them to be. Finally, if you're looking for a cheap dentist, go to Mexico. I wouldn't say this dentist is cheap at all, but the results are worth it. As my other dentist friends would say, "pick the teeth you want to keep and just brush those." In a similar vein, you only get what you pay for. read more

I was a patient here for around 2 years when I had previously lived in the area. Hopefully I can summarize without too many details the experiences my family and I all had here. The office you walk into looks peaceful; A zen vibe with a little water fountain, coffee machine, etc. For the amount of money (and health) Dr. Phi and Miyamoto scam you out of, it could be better. Next you go into the dental room where there's a small tv on the ceiling with headphones they ask you to wear. Pay attention to this part, as it comes back up later. Now they will give you the checkup and they'll say they found many cavities and 'problems' in your mouth. They will try to pressure you to get any previous dental work you had re-done because it's all "butchered" (including crowns.) My mother had a few crowns in her mouth that Phi claimed she needed to URGENTLY get re-done, and then tried to coerce my mom into get 6 MORE crowns (for a grand total of 10), summing up to be around $25,000 total. Out of fear, my mom had her previous crowns fixed, however she didn't let Dr. Phi touch the rest of her teeth. Thank god she didn't because years later my mom has had NO problems at all with the teeth she didn't get done, and other dentists have confirmed those teeth are perfectly fine on their own. Now, back to those TV screens and headphones... my family is not a huge fan of not being aware what's being done as our doctor is doing it, so we politely decline the TV/headphones option. Thank god we do; Dr. Phi will tell you your previous work is atrocious, then go to the patient that's sitting one thin wall away and tell them VERBATIM the same story. "Oh yes your last this your dentist that..." etc etc. It's all done to instill fear and trust into your new doctors. As other posts have mention, bedside manners are not great but in comparison to the seriously destructive force they're bringing to your mouth, I feel like bedside manners aren't as damaging. Two other family members had extensive dental work done here, with no consideration for our future health. They wanted to delete teeth in one person, implants in another, 10 crowns in the third... It's bizarre and makes you seriously question the ethics of the place. I would not recommend this place to anyone, it's in your best interest to seek dental help elsewhere. read more

I am a new patient of La Costa Del Sur Dental and thought my appointment was at 12:30pm. Angelica called me at 11:13 asking if I was on my way - apparently my appointment was at 11:00. Most dental offices wouldn't take you if you are over an hour late but La Costa Del Sur Dental was understanding and still saw me right away when I finally arrived close to 12:00pm. Dr. Phi did my cleaning and was amazing in her technique and efficiency. I had to come back the next day for a filling and once again, she was extremely efficient. She said it would take an hour and it didn't go one minute over. It was a weird and unpleasant experience! Around 12 noon 9/20/2018, I called La Costa De Sur Dental ( this office was recommended by a friend and it's close to where I live), all I need to know is that if their office is in- network of my dental insurance, the girl who answered my call asked all information which included phone number of the insurance company, ID#,group# and prime holder's DOB, then ask my DOB, I told her that I will provide my DOB if I will visit the office, and I just need to know if their office is in the net work, then she said " how can I call if you don't give me the phone number " I told her I have already given her the number, she denies it, but finally found the phone number I provided to her . Then she said that she will call the next day since it's busy today which is fine with me. At the end I asked what is her name so I can call tomorrow if I don't receive call from their office, she told me her name is"Nise"and she doesn't work in the office, just take phone calls since it is lunch break. She should have told me this from the very beginning, I would not want to give all of those information to someone who is not working in the office, this is very unprofessional! It's weird! I have a beautiful and healthy mouth after about 4 months worth of NONPainful visits and I had a ton of work done due to terrible doctors in the past that I was referred to. Finally, I read reviews about La Costa Dental Del Sur and did what I thought was best and so glad I did! Dr Phi is excellent at everything she does and she does everything...better than perfect and no pain!! If you want a perfect mouth do not listen to anyone but me who now has a perfect and healthy mouth after years of mis treatment. I spent $2,200 getting digital "x rays" (which costs the dentist nothing) and a cap which still doesn't fit right. I went through a long explanation of all the work I needed done and was made to think it was urgent. When I returned to get the cap placed he says "I noticed you may have a problem with this next tooth". I was dumbfounded that he didn't even remember me or that he had already gone over that problem in detail. Also, a filling had fallen out between the temporary cap installation and the final, so I asked him to look at it. Of course, he proposed a cap. I told him I was not able to spend more money right that moment-so he then said a filling would be OK. Then his wife/partner came in to talk about pricing and made me feel like I should be grateful that I'd only been charged the $2,200 as some other fee had been inadvertently not charged. No understanding of the spot I was in at all. Since then I've received texts telling me my yearly exam was due several times even though I've asked them to stop. read more

Watch out for this dental practice. We have insurance yet they still charged my teenage daughter for x-rays that should have been covered, as well as the duplication of the x-rays. They indicated that she had two cavities when, in fact, she didn't have any cavities as was verified by another dentist at another practice that same day. This place is great (or at least as great as going to a dentist can be!). I have had many dentists in my life and have not liked or trusted any of them since I was a child. Drs. Phi and Miyamoto have been great. Over the last three years many of my fillings from childhood gave out and I have spent a lot of time getting new fillings or crowns. They are patient, thoughtful and professional and have often suggested deferring work or "watching" a problem tooth rather than incurring unneccessary costs. When I first made my appointment I thought the service was great. I got a call and my appointment was scheduled for the following week. I should have known then that that was too easy to be a good thing. Three days before my appointment, I had a voicemail stating that they had changed my appointment time without conferring with me first. It worked for me to take that appointment, but looking back after my visit, it makes so much sense. When I was there, I was the only patient there. There was only one hygienist and she did not know how to do her job so I'm not even certain why she was working in the office yet. This is when I started to consider not coming back after this visit. It felt weird to me. After the x-rays were taken, I found out that Dr. Phi's bedside manner is as atrocious as others have stated. She made many degrading remarks and made me feel very uncomfortable to be her patient. She said things like, "open. I am going to check for cancer now" and other things so terribly direct and worded in the worst way possible. It was all very insulting and unprofessional. As she went through my xrays and looked at my teeth, she claimed that all of my previous dental work was not done correctly, she said I needed to get three crowns and had about four cavities that needed filling all whilst saying things in a manner that was so off-putting I couldn't stand it anymore. Additionally, all of my fillings were apparently leaking mercury into my teeth and needed to be replaced soon. Hmm. At this point, I sat up in the chair and told her that I have never had such a poor dental report and how it was possible that all of these things just started to happen in the past 5 months since my last exam. How was it possible that my previous dentist missed all of these major things? She then told me to look at the xrays and that she would show me the pictures. That is an absurd thing to ask of a patient. I have no xray reading training. I have no way to compare or assess what looks good and what doesn't look good or normal. She lost my trust in so many ways. She told me that other patients have been able to understand what they're looking at -- I say that's phony. Those people just nodded their heads and smiled as they pretended to know what they were looking at in their xrays! Furthermore, my dental history only fed her reasons to say and do things that were probably no necessary at all.So that's when I decided I didn't want to be there anymore so I got out of the chair and left before things go worse. What a quack. It's no wonder that there were no other patients in the office and that getting an appointment was super easy. I am eager to go to a new dentist who is ethical and kind. read more

I am a new patient so I don't have a long history with this practice, however, I had an experience today that left a bad taste in my mouth. I had an appointment today and waited in the waiting area for ten minutes before being acknowledged. I was brought back and sat in a chair, as well as being handed several magazines. I began to read and checked my phone for the time several times. Finally, I saw it was an hour past my appointment time. No one had checked on me during this time, and I had no idea why things were so delayed. I went to the desk and asked nicely to reschedule, as I had been waiting for an hour and had other commitments for the day. Then, a while later the dentist came and hurriedly did the service. Both the dentist and the front office clerk were very irritated and short with me, even though I waited politely for an hour before saying anything. Most people would have spoke up sooner. I did not even get an explanation or a half hearted sorry as to why I was sitting there for an hour. I work in customer service in the medical field and thought this was really poorly handled. Most offices would tell you upon check in if the doctor is running late and if you would like to reschedule, in fact many call you before to save you time. I felt the way this situation was handled was very bad customer service. A simple explanation in the beginning would have allowed me to reschedule and come back at a later time. Had I not spoke up, who knows how long I would have been kept waiting to be acknowledged. I also see they push the extras, i.e.. special toothpaste and mouthwash they sell, night guards etc. In fact in my hour wait I heard the dentist tell several patients they needed these things and to see a TMJ specialist. Is this really needed or are they trying to sell things? Based on today's visit, I am unsure if I will return. How patients are treated is a big reflection on the office and today's visit makes me hesitant to get further treatments here. I hope this is a rare occurrence and not a standard way of doing business. read more
