Even the ginger ale my partner ordered came served like a cocktail and tasted really quite special - it was definitely not just Canada Dry in a cool Mason jar. To order food you need to walk to the back of the bar where they have a tiny fast-food restaurant just squeezed into the corner. When the egg timer they had handed me went off, I went to the counter picked up our tortilla chips with beans, cheese, etc. and a small plate of fried cauliflower "wings". Yesterday night we visited the place with a little group. I liked the way how people treat the customers. In 2 minutes we had table, we got our drinks fast. I recommend to try the small jar first, if you don't like the taste the big one can be too much. After all my favourite was the hurricane. Moved into the area which.. Well let's just say a few of my neighbours have nationalist posters in their windows. Thankfully this place was very welcoming and anglo friendly! Drinks were delicious and STRONG! Around $10 per drink if you get a small, and honestly two is MORE THAN enough. As if Bacchus was winking down upon us La Distillerie showed up at the exact moment we decided to take a break. The front of the bar opens to the street, in case you need a peak inside before settling into one of the booths or at the bar. The cocktail list features many intriguing craft cocktails. I was drawn to the mad men whiskey based cocktail. Think a more detailed version of an old fashion. We had a few drinks here and managed to actually have a conversation, as this bar was more quiet than most others in the area. The decor is dark wood, so inviting after walking for hours under the blistering sun. The booths looked small but comfortable, and probably helped keep the conversations low, you don't really need to scream if your party is within whisper distance. I can see this bar being popular with the singles that like to mingle. The lights are low, the tables small, all key ingredients for romance. The music, whether chosen by the staff or a satellite station was kick ass, lots of great local music mixed with the now popular local bands. I.e. Arcade Fire, Wolf Mother, etc. If I lived in MTL I would make this a frequent stop for after dinner drinks with coworkers. Maybe it was the constant layer of poutine in our stomachs to absorb the alcohol, but neither of us so much as stumbled on the sidewalk or slurred a word - until that night at La Distillerie. Happy Hour is 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the large jars are $3 off. Drinks are served in mason jars. I'm probably the only person who hates this trend solely because it's so trendy (I'm looking at YOU, Pinterest!), but when I saw the large jar and began to drink, that hate turned into pure lust - for more booze! I recommend the Rock A Rula (like a root beer float) and the Patriot (like a popsicle). The Mojito and Long Island were strong, and the Chupa Chupa (orange, amaretto, whiskey) goes down reaaal easy. Honestly, none of the drinks disappointed. The complimentary Goldfish crackers are cute and very welcome while chugging monstrous cocktails. The bar has a little bit of a hipster vibe going on with the decor, but it is far from pretentious. This isn't the kind of cocktail bar that will leave you stumbling over names of ingredients. Stumbling out the door? Well, maybe. I think we each got a hug from the bartender, or maybe he was the manager, but I can't remember why. I usually only go to this place for happy hour when they have specials so I can't comment on how crowded it gets at other times but usually if you arrive early enough it isn't too bad. The drinks are really good and not watered down like at a lot of places. That being said the Mason jars can be quite pricey and if you don't go at happy hour when the big ones are $3 off the cost can start to add up. The price of the regular cocktails though is in line with what you'd pay for a drink at any bar here. The mojito and the hurricane are good choices if you want a mason jar. This staff can be quite rude. I have been twice with a date and both times that nearly insisted I sit at the bar at these VERY uncomfortable chairs, eventhough tables are open. They said the tables are for groups only, but when I looked around - many of the tables just had 2 people at them. When we finally negotiated with the host to sit at a table, the stools were pretty shoddy. The drinks are nice and have a huge variety - but they are NOT strong, unless you are used to weak drinks. They seemed very average - and they were a little pricey - with most drinks at $9.50 and doubles at $18.00 The music is lame to unremarkable. Given the attitude of the staff - I will never be back. My husband and I had a wonderful time at this bar. We needed to kill some time before our dinner reservation so we figured we'd have a few drinks. I had the asian pear and it was so delicious. My husband who doesn't like sugary drinks even admitted it was pretty tasty. My husband had a lemonade type cocktail, a tequila one, and something else. My sister who lives there actually knew the spot, which happens to be La Distillerie N.2 They have a very nice cocktail list but the talented bartender also made us a couple of other drinks with ingredients we requested. We were very happy! Of course, everybody loves the Mason jars but I think the large format ones take a bit too long to drink and by the end it's so watered down by the melted ice cubes that it's not really worth it. Even though I appreciated the eclectic music selection, we went there on a Saturday and the place was super loud. My mom and I stopped in here on our recent trip to Montreal. We were there around 8pm, and the place was already fairly busy, but the staff sat us quickly. I had of course seen pictures of the cool drinks and must admit that part of the reason I wanted to go was obtain my own Instagram shot. The goldfish and board games were also a draw! If I could give this place 10 stars, I would as this was hands down the most ridiculously amazing bar experience my husband and I have ever had. We stumbled upon La Distillerie No.2 while looking for some place to get a drink after the US-Germany World Cup game. The super friendly bearded bouncer invited us in and, when we asked about snacks, told us it wouldn't be a problem to bring something in from the nearby restaurant. He added the caveat that there would be hugs if we came back after getting food. We picked up some Thai take-out nearby, both received very satisfying hugs and were promptly seated at the bar. A wonderfully energetic, goofy, ginger bartender (Jay) proceeded to give us silverware and toppings for our food and present us with delectable drinks menus. Their menu was ingeniously separated by flavor profiles and expertly executed so that every ingredient contributed to the flavor profile of the resulting beverage. Given the curiosity and enthusiasm we showed, Jay was incredibly generous in sharing tasty things with us throughout the night. We got to compare the only spiced rum distilled in Montreal to Captain (Montreal Rum was so wonderfully spicy compared to the flat vanilla flavor of Captain), took delicious mixed cocktail shots with the bartenders, got to experience chasing Polish Zubrowka vodka with caramelized apples (patiently hand-torched by one of the bartenders) and were offered the entire binder of the bar's recipes since it opened to peruse. I was so thrilled to find a place that shared my passion for creating and sharing, with such a welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable yet super fun staff. I came to La Distillerie after a good friend's recommendation. I am now certain this friend knows so little about me. My fiancée and I went on Sunday, two days after Christmas. It was packed, loud, and quite dark. There were also games: the people at the table next to us were playing Jenga. My fiancée hates crowds, but I don't care one way or another as long as the drinks are good. They are not. The menu has a great selection and even indicates the strength of the drink next to a picture and description of the cocktails. My first drink was rated a 4 (5-point scale): The Monk-y-Tonk. I love Tequila and the menu states that the drink is made with tequila. This drink also included my favorite liqueur, Chartreuse! However, the description on the page and reality were quite different: there was a TON of ice but I tasted very little tequila. The Chartreuse was non-existent. There was absolutely no way this drink could be a 4 in intensity. There was far too much ice! Because I wanted to be fair (and I had walked over a mile on the slush-covered sidewalks), I tried another drink: Pineapple Express (rating: 3). It was better, but that is not as great a compliment as one might think. There was definitely Canadian whiskey in this drink, but the drink contained the most hidden pineapple I've ever experienced. Let me be clear: I was not expecting a Piña Colada-level of pineapple, I simply wanted to have some pineapple flavor. The drink is called Pineapple Express, after all. I was disappointed. Because I respect my palate and felt I spent enough of my money, I politely asked the waitress for my check. We paid and we left, vowing not to invite said friend/recommender to our wedding. (Since we love him, we won't.) I did like the service. Even on a very busy night, we were cared for very well. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. If we liked this place, I am sure she would have made sure the drinks continued to flow. But, La Distillerie and I were not meant to be. Clearly, this is a place for a younger crowd. I would have loved this place in college, but I'm in my early 30s now and I appreciate good alcohol. If you live for sweet, fruity drinks with a touch of alcohol, the La Distillerie is your place. If you want a drink that leaves you satisfied, a drink that is made for sipping (and with each sip, you smile), go someplace else. When we find that place, we shall let you all know. Randomly chose to go here one night based off good reviews and they were all definitely right. It was very crowded when we first got there but once we found open seats at the bar we had a blast! The drinks were unique and delicious and a good price for how much and the quality you're getting. The atmosphere was great too, great music and good vibes. La Distillerie was perhaps my favorite bar in Montreal. Fantastic cocktails that spanned the liquors and the intensity. Each item listed the ingredients, how strong the drink was, and a picture - very nice for the drunk. Point and pick a great drink. Every one I had was fantastic. I opted for the whiskey-base drinks so they were strong yet super flavorful. My friend tried some of the fruitier, colorful drinks and they were definitely drinkable but had a good base that you could tell was alcohol infused. Not much space so you're bound to wait outside for 10 minutes or so, but it's well worth it. Las Distillerie is perfect for a low key, cocktail filled night on the town.
