Haven't been here in a while. My 39 yr old son wanted to go for his birthday dinner. Was so good especially the tortilla soup, flour tortillas and chille relleno. Tasty. Recimmend

Thursday Date night! [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a parking lot and really fun decorations outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We waited outside to be seated around 6:50pm and guy said 10 minutes for a booth to be ready. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Inside is exactly how you would want La Especial Norte to be decorated.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Ordered a margarita and it was excellent. The chips and salsa were satisfying. I asked our waiter which meat he liked better the Asada or the carnitas and he said "they both taste the same". Yikes! I asked which one he liked better between the chicken or beef taco and he said chicken. The chicken was unseasoned and pretty bland so afraid of what the beef tastes like. Wife ordered the Enchilada trio, and she reported that some of them tasted stale. There are so many Mexican food spots in San Diego...would probably go to those before coming back here...unless it was to just to enjoy the ambiance with good company over drinks, chips, and salsa.

Great food and service. I would recommend this place everyday of the week and then some

Good solid spot. Gets crazy and service is a flag down for a napkin.... But maybe it's just that everyone wants to go out. Pretty main room. Big booths and hardly ever a big wait. Even parking which is rare here, but nice and free. Skinny margaritas had basically no booze. Shame, but there went the 5th star. For $11, put some tequila in can taste. Oh well. Main attraction is the array of soups and carnitas. Huge chunks of pork. Debs enchilada verde very tasty. Carnitas make it a 4.5. Try it and see. Go shots. Not skinny.

Locals know that La Especial Norte cooks up a storm in Encinitas. You really can not go wrong at this family owned restaurant that serves up hot and delicious meals at a very fair price point. From the minute I walk through the door until I roll out with leftovers in hand I feel happy and satisfied. Maybe it is the eclectic decor which consists of a cultural items, pops of vivid color and textures galore. Or it could be the giant plates of delicious comfort food? The friendly servers who treat me like a guest in their kitchen are knowlegeable and efficient. They bring chips and salsa and do not nickel and dime you for chips and salsa. The margaritas are the weakest link here. 7up with lime and some tequila is not going to float my boat. QAfter numerous attempts to make the margarita work I have decided to order it neat on my next visit. I highly recommend La Especial Norte for some down to earth Mexican food that will fill up the family and not leave you broke.

This place really hit a home run my wife and I wanted to get some soup and this was beyond our expectation. The flavor of the food here is really good. The pozole came out nice and hot and full of flavor the broth was perfect. Excellent portions the size is large for the amount of money you get and all of the stuff on the side was perfect mixture has onions and cilantro, radishes, oregano, lime, perfect amount of everything I had my fill and took the rest home to go. My wife had the chicken soup and rice if you are feeling under the weather and it's cold outside come get this. We got both soups for $23 out the door and had plenty to eat the next day, amazing service fast and friendly and [[HIGHLIGHT]]it looks like a very colorful restaurant inside. It feels like you are in Mexico really good family Vibe[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] we will Back for sure. Amazing place.

Huachinango And Mushrooms - so full of garlic, it was overwhelming.

I've been going here since '77. Great food, still not expensive. Very convenient to get to.

I ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and a house coffee. The coffee was actually pretty good! Cream and sugar were delivered separately to finish with your preference. As for the tacos, it was okay. The fish was a bit dry for my liking, cabbage could have been chopped with more finesse, and I wished they QC'd their limes a bit before putting them on the plate. Both were bone dry and I had to ask for more. Moreover, the cilantro lime rice was also a bit bland. It needed salt to lift the flavors in my opinion. There weren't even flecks of green if it was supposed to be cilantro? I tried boyfriend's veggie hash but was disappointed to find that it was almost all potatoes. Having said that, it was an extremely generous portion so he was filled up. While I didn't try it, our friend that had the chorizo hash also said it was okay so I'm guessing the ratio wasn't quite right. Anyways, ask for their chili sauce on the side, that's actually quite surprising. It had really good heat and was more like a chili crisp than a vinegary hot sauce. The plates that did score favorably at the table were the carne chilaquiles and the divorced eggs.

The parking lot has plentiful parking but was completely full as I was leaving around 12pm. There were tons of order pick-up spots and 20-minute max parking spots that help with the flow. The restaurant was impeccably clean with a growing line of lunch-goers. The workers were very efficient and the line moved quickly. I also noticed the apparent owner/manager talking to regulars and greeting customers as they walked in, which I really liked to see! I was served my order to-go in less than 10 minutes and ended up unexpectedly using the other 10 minutes after taking my first bite--after that it was hard to stop. The burrito was the perfect size (not too large and not too small). My original breakfast burrito was wrapped in a fresh hand-made tortilla filled with fluffy eggs, the perfect amount of bacon, cheese, soft fresh potatoes, topped with the avocado salsa verde which went perfectly with everything. I even ended up sipping the salsa (it was that good) between bites of the burrito. I was also blown away by the clean and fully stocked salsa bar. So many options (including non-spicy ones for those with gastric limitations too!) and they even offered radishes, carrots, and pickled onions individually wrapped with care. Everything tasted fresh and home-made. After 7 years being away from San Diego, Los Tacos delivered exactly what I had been missing. This location really blew me away and I will definitely be back to see what else it has to offer.

Having set my Apple Maps before reading the description of the restaurant, my wife and I set our course on the way back from the San Diego Zoo. I didn't want to get home too late and the parking situation for the better restaurants near the zoo didn't look promising so we decided to go further away from San Diego to find a place on the way home near the 5 freeway. Cancun may not look like much but the food is pretty freaking amazing. My surf and turf burrito filled with generous amounts of shrimp and carne asada was incredible. Adding sour cream and guacamole just put it on another level. No burritos like this near my home. My wife's shrimp plate was also a winner. Lots of shrimp. My wife's only gripe was not enough rice and beans. Even the side of corn tortillas was moist and tasty. I'm not sure if they make their own tortillas but it seemed like it. Even the french fries are incredible. Nice and crispy but not dry. I thought I'd still be hungry after just the burrito but I had no idea what a monster it is. Even after eating 3/4 of it, the remainder was still heavy. The older lady working the register is so sweet. A little hard to understand since she has a thick accent but very nice and helpful. The cook was cool too. Very happy when I stopped before leaving to tell them the food was "delicioso". Don't let the gas station scare you away. The food is jammin'! I plan on stopping by again when I attend Comic-con next year.
